The food here is really good and the service is decent... but just a heads up, double-check your bill. There were three of us: 3 drinks, one $13 plate, a $12 torta, and a $4 gordita. Somehow our total came out to $55. We paid $60 and were given only $5 back. When we asked for a breakdown, the employee tried to say the total was $45, even though he had just charged us $55. After we pointed it out, he gave us the rest of our change but didn't apologize and walked away. I feel like I know a thing or two about hole in the wall types of places. I like them, I like to find them, I then become the duchess of them. I like a good deal and hidden gems almost as much as I like sushi. This place is making it difficult for me though. After finally eating here though, I can't say that I had the same experience as other reviewers. We actually tried to come here a couple of months back and there wasn't an employee in sight. We stood around near a counter trying to figure out if it was a seat yourself place or an order at the counter place or what. After four minutes, no one emerged, despite the front door ringing the bell and we were getting unfriendly stares from the patrons... weird. Now, this place is on my route home and I didn't notice them for years because the sign was really run down and it looked abandoned. Then the sign got spruced up and I wanted to try them out, as I am a fan of Mexican. However, I noticed after this event that they were closed for nearly two weeks. Since then I've noticed they will be periodically closed in the middle of the day when I am passing by. They have strange hours, but Wednesdays are the only days they close early and they do not seem to stick to their operating hours. I finally made it in today and the gentleman at the counter wasn't really interested in my business and was pretty cold and unhelpful. He told me that I order at the counter and then proceeded to stare at me wordlessly. That was unnerving so I took the menu to a table to determine what I wanted. Five minutes later, I was still looking through their varied menu when the only friendly person in the building stopped by. I placed my to go order with her and paid at the counter. About 10 minutes later I had my food and was home in about five minutes. When I opened up the order, Carne Tampequena $10.19, I didn't even say anything before my husband piped in that it looked like slop. Now this man is someone I refer to as a garbage disposal who will eat anything, he is not picky at all about food... but he had a point. My steak was thrown into my beans and the enchiladas didn't look very good. He then mentioned it smelled bad and looked like a frozen dinner. Now that sounded harsh for anyone, I was pretty surprised, but I couldn't really disagree. I ate two bites of each item and it just tasted awful. It all had the texture, taste and smell of something that had been reheated, even the rice wasn't good and the beans were watery. The meat was tough and had a terrible taste. The beef enchilada had a similar texture, but was completely bland. It all ended up in the trash, money wasted. When it comes to bad food, I usually try to chalk it up to a bad day, but reheated food is not a good sign. The inability to stick to their operating hours and the lack of customer service by everyone, except the one woman who was nice today, is not acceptable. I can't give this place a higher rating, too many things were disappointing. There are many places in town that have really good to outstanding food. You can take your pick of Mexican, Tex-Mex or taquerias- there are so many that are tasty and affordable. I am disappointed in this experience and suggest they step up their game to keep up with the competition. read more

La Mexicana has been around since 1998, so it's safe to say they know how to make some good Mexican food. I've seen many of my Yelp friends make stops here quite frequently. It made me finally make my way over there. I was glad I did. They have everything. Tacos, burritos, tortas, tostadas, enchiladas, menudo, pozole, nachos and too much more to name on here. I was in for something small and ended up with a milanesa torta with jalapenos. Fresh bread, lettuce, tomato, avocado, onions, jalapeno, mayo and a pounded thin piece of breaded beef. Creamy and very filling. The homemade salsa also hit the spot. Not too hot but it had a kick to it. Add a tall horchata to it and damn, I was a happy, happy guy. As other reviews have said, the place isn't much to look at, and even inside that holds true. A half painted mural lines the back wall that never got finished and all sorts of random knick knacks and pictures all over. But you come for some good food, good, inexpensive food. Do stop by. One of the more authentic Mexican eatery in Denton. I was lucky enough to have one of my friend from Mexico took me here couple of time, and showed me what were authentic and good in his opinion. I would highly recommend Torta or Tacos. My favorite are Torta de Lengua (Beef Tongue Sandwich) or Taco de Lengua. They are cheap, generous in portion, and tasted great as always. Another dish I frequently order, especially during the winter time, is the Sudado de Pescado (Fish Stew). Mind you, it does have whole fish with bone in the stew, so please order with your own discretion. To be honest, I won't be too excited to order Tex-Mex dishes here, they are decent of course. But if I want good Tex-Mex I will go to an authentic Tex-Mex place. Ok - maybe 3.5 stars? Maybe I should explain (or maybe this will say it all): I'm from San Diego. A place where you can't sneeze without hitting a taco stand or a good mexican eatery. The land of Los Cuatro Milpas, El Comal and El Agave (if you're ever in San Diego, check those places out). So, in terms of my "life of eating border-style mexican food" (tacos, enchiladas, etc - the stuff most people think comprise the whole of the mexican culinary universe, when all they've really seen is just the solar system) - this place is average. But, for "Mexican Food in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex" - this is more of a 4-5 star. Their menudo is definitely 5 star. Their horchata - eh, 2 star (but at least they give you a lot of it). The staff are friendly and attentive, the food is good. Be sure you ask for the salsa verde. The salsa they serve with the totopos seems to be tweaked for the, um, er... how to say this...gaba, er... no, that's not good, er...let's just say it tasted more like ketchup than salsa. Going to La Mexicana is not an aesthetic experience. You don't go here for the ambiance or decor. The restaurant is not exactly an eyesore, but it isn't pretty. The food here is good, not great. The chips has a smoky flavor that may not be for everyone. The salsa is good, but if you're looking for a chunkier kind, you may not enjoyed this watered down variety. My girlfriend got the nachos and she was a little underwhelmed by the amount of cheese that was melted on. The meat itself (chicken) was tasty and the beans were as well. It lacked any other extras that you may expect when ordering nachos (lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, etc.) I got a combo plate with a beef enchilada, sour cream chicken enchilada, and a beef taco. I enjoyed my plate a lot, which is why I gave this place three stars. The prices are low, the service is slow. It's a worthy visit and I'm sure I'll go back sometime soon. read more

I think people get very excited for this place because it is real authentic Mexican food, and it's cheap. The only problem is that authentic places almost always use really poor quality ingredients. The vegetables are usually ok, but the meat and cheese they use are noticeably bad. Granted you can get items at La Mexicana that you can't get at a lot of Tex-Mex restaurants (Menudo etc.), but the overall quality of the food is far worse at La Mexicana than most other Mexican restaurants. I fell into a trap with this place, the same trap so many enterprising local students do. La Mexicana has two very tasty price performers that are very distracting. One is the breakfast menu, the other is the taco menu. They have about ten breakfast plates - huevos rancheros, huevos a la mexincana, more - my favorite is chorizo con papas. Nothing soaks up delicious chorizo better than a potato. Or if you are feeling more like lunch, load up on the $1.50 tacos - al pastor, barbacoa, lengua+++. BUT - if you've been going to La Mexincana for years and never veered off these two paths, DON'T FORGET THE REST OF THE MENU. The Guiso is not to be missed - delicious meat soaking in a spicy sauce and best with flour tortillas. And for heaven's sake, try the Costillas de Puerco. Pork Ribs and potato in a spicy green tomatillo sauce - really, the combination of flavors in this dish is amazing! I've had the grilled tilapia served 'al mojo de ajo' [grilled with garlic] and it comes out covered in garlic and a nice flavor from the grill. The caldo de pollo [chicken broth/soup] is a spectacle - giant hunks of chicken with a corn cob, giant carrot, potato, onion....delicious! And if you haven't tried their Pozole [this is a soup with hominy and meat] - this is a perfect cure to the rainy cold days of winter...when we have those. If you have never been here, it is definitely not anywhere you need to dress up for, it is very casual. Staff has always been super polite and I go their so often, they are pretty friendly & anticipate things we like to get which I find to be very thoughtful. I would not normally review or rank a casual establishment like this as high as four stars, but it is so reliable and I felt like the reviews were so mixed I needed to speak up. Best Mexican food in Denton without a doubt. I came here with a buddy of mine and his dad and am now crazy about it. Do not come here expecting your normal Tex-Mex. This is authentic Mexican cuisine. The tacos are incredible and amazingly cheap. Again this is traditional Mexican cuisine, meaning you get your choice of a flour or corn tortilla, your choice of 6 or 7 different styles of beef, chicken, or pork, with toppings of onions, cilantro, and lime juice. No cheddar cheese, iceberg lettuce, or sickly tomatoes here. The Horchata is fantastic on a hot day and tastes like Christmas would taste. Very highly recommended! read more

I'm surprised I never reviewed La Mex; it's a regular stop in my rotation and always my first thought for authentic Mexican or street tacos (in a dining room environment). My staples here are Guido de Res or Carne Asada, though the Chile Relleno never disappoints. For taco fans (real tacos, I mean, not Taco Bell + mystery meat), their carnitas are genuinely crispy outside and tender within. They do Tex-Mex well, but I take that second-hand because I can't bring myself to order nachos in a place like this. Beer is cold, the migas are spicy and delicious. Our fellow foodie friend who lives in Denton is a regular here, and suggested it for lunch as we were passing through. It was my 2nd trip here. The first time was with a larger crowd 4.5 years ago, and I remember liking it, but I don't recall specifically what I had. This time I had the Carne Asada, and it was delicious! I ordered corn tortillas on the side, and made two "tacos" with the meat, beans, and sour cream. The rest of it I ate all separate and it was very flavorful. I appreciated that most the fat was trimmed from the steak. The salsa was fantastic! It had the right combo of garlic, onion, tomatoes, lime, and other seasonings that I liked. The tortillas are not homemade, but even still, the food tasted like authentic Mexican. I was told the street tacos were great, and I almost got them, but changed my mind at the last minute. That's what I'll be getting next time, as I'm sure I'll be back again when we visit our friend in the future. I don't usually like Mexican food but when I'm craving, I've got to have something amazing. I usually go to El Guapos or El Matador but they were lacking in authenticity. A friend of mine told my boyfriend and I to give this place a try. I mean, the decor isn't great. It's kind of got that Dairy Queen, small-time charm. It's a fairly small restaurant with an even smaller staff. I did enjoy how friendly everyone was. They started us out with chips and salsa quickly! I was excited that they were on point about that since I was terribly hungry. But the salsa lacked heat and ingredients. I have definitely had better. My boyfriend and I ordered the chicken and beef fajitas. They were amazing! It didn't taste like they seasoned the meat and just grilled it right away. It tasted like it was marinated for hours. I had the carne asada tacos today. Honestly, they were pretty bland, and a bit greasy even for tacos. The onions and cilantro were fresh, however. The hot sauces served with the tacos are good. The chips and salsa were sub-par. However, the service was very good, and finding a real Mexican place open after 3pm in Denton seems to be bordering on impossible. Not what it used to be. So sad. 10 years ago that place had homemade tortillas, beans like soup in a cup, awesome fresh guacamole, amazing, you could smell it walking in the door. Now, it's disgusting and I have been sick all day from it. It's not clean, I had the hue boa rancheros with the pace picante sauce, yet had a totally different salsa for my chips, that tasted homemade but old. The eggs were running and the potatoes were rock hard grease. The chorizo and eggs, were over cooked and I think rotten chorizo. It was so bad. This place has so many wonderful memories for me. If you are looking for very tasty and authentic mexican food for a low price, this is the place for you. The portion of the plates are very generous and you have plenty of choices. I had fajitas, which were served with rice, salad, beans, pico de gallo, and onions; the meat was very good seasoned and it all was fresh and delicious. It also has great service, all of the staff are very friendly and polite. Everything arrived promptly and hot. The only reason I did not give it a rating of 5 stars is because the place is small and plain. However it is clean and calm, and as others have remarked you do not go there for the site, but because it is a great choice for people on a low budget who want to eat real mexican food. This place serves all kinds of Mexican food and they do everything well. My favorite is their breakfast dishes. I would give the food and service 5 stars, but its hard to give 5 stars to a typical casual taqueria...nothing fancy or special about the decor or ambiance. You may have to work a little bit with your server to make sure they get your order correct (unless you speak Spanish), but they do their best to get it correct. La Mexicana seems to get a lot of yelp points for being both cheap and authentic. (If it wasn't cheap, people would say that it wasn't authentic!) I headed down after reading the reviews but left somewhat underwhelmed. I had a small bowl of tripe, a carne asada burrito and a bottle of Negro Modelo (served without a glass). I also ate a ton of chips and salsa while we were waiting to get organized. Neither the burrito nor the menudo struck me as being especially good. This is some LEGIT Mexican food, and this is definitely what you call a hole in the wall. Me and my co-worker decided to venture out from Lewisville since we were so sick of "restaurant row". They serve you a basket of chips and salsa when you sit down, and the salsa and the chips were so good, I couldn't stop eating them! The salsa just had enough spice to it. For dinner, I had a combination plate of 1 crispy taco, 1 sour cream chicken enchilada, 1 beef enchilada, beans and rice. Can we say LARGE portion? The white sour cream sauce on the chicken enchilada was so yummy! The beef enchilada had ground beef that was cooked in a sauce and had pieces of potatoes and carrots inside. This was definitely one of the best enchiladas I've ever had in my life. It was not JUST a tortilla and chicken or beef filling with red or green sauce. It had lots of flavor cooked into the meat itself! The best part is, my meal was around $7! wow! I wanted to keep eating, but the portion was so large, I had to have my co-worker confiscate my fork from me haha So, would I come back here? DEFINITELY!!! read more
