The place is that old school vibe from where I grew up in West Texas! Soon as I we pulled up I knew it was gonna be good. The service was so good, they greet you when you walk in. You can seat yourself which we love. We got jalapeño poppers, which were so good. They are fried and stuffed with shredded cheese which I think is cheddar and the jalapeños are pickled which threw me off first but they were so delicious. My wife got grilled chicken smothered in a cheese sauce that was so good. Her beans and rice were on point. I got the menudo and it was delicious so good not spicy but just right and the menudo was cooked perfect not over done and a wonderful texture. I can't give 5 stars for everything on the menu, but my experience today at lunch was great. I know there are several comments about the service not being good and people being rude, but the waitress I just had was very nice and told me her favorites on the lunch menu. I listened to her and got the #25 which is Enchiladas Verde (mine was with chicken). The verde sauce is special. The white cheese they use is also great. I like the rice a lot as well. I'm not the biggest fan of their salsa or refried beans, but I still ate some of it. Price came out to less than $10 before tip. I'll be back for this dish for sure! read more

Shame on me for not giving this place the update it deserves much sooner! If you love to support local and enjoy the charm of a little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant, this is a place you must check out! We've been coming here for over a year and since we often choose this place over others, they've clearly earned the fifth star! Now, I don't want to act like I'm an authority, let's just say I eat... a lot! I consider tacos one of my favorite food groups. My husband and I often compromise between sushi and pizza and meet at Tex-Mex. Now this isn't a taqueria, and it's not straight Tex-Mex, but it is yummy, affordable and has it's own vibe. I want to avoid confusion, they *do* have a lot of Tex-Mex on the menu, mostly the lunch specials and combos, but they also have plenty of authentic dishes and this place is legit! So, we were lured in by the Tex-Mex and stayed for everything else! Now I did call this a hole in the wall, and that's what it is, but that's also a compliment. It's the type of place that's right up our alley- we're a laid back couple and prefer a casual, cozy and genuine environment. So what do you need to know, to make the most out of a visit here? This place can be easy to miss, so keep an eye out for the small, red standalone building next to the donut shop and across the street from Smokehouse. Parking is sparse, so utilize the side lots more so than the front of the restaurant. I promise there is more seating than parking, so don't fret if you see a lot of cars! There are about 17 tables and booths altogether. You get refills on iced tea, but not anything else. They have cans of soda and bottles of Jarritos and occasionally horchata. I say go for the tea, their sweet tea is excellent, they always have it on hand and you can have all you want! I still want to try their horchata though. Get ready to get full before your food even comes! Every dine in customer gets chips, salsa and bean soup! I remember thinking that was strange on my first visit, but it's fantastic! It's very savory and filling for a small complimentary item. Sometimes I try to poach my husband's, but he usually won't share. :( The chips always seem fresh and the salsa is thick and chunky with a lot of cilantro and onions mixed in. You'll get some heat, but it's not very spicy, so you can handle it. On that note, some of the entrees give you options for some spicy sauces. They have a ton of great deals that make it easy to get a cheap meal. Tuesdays through Friday's they have lunch specials that start at $5.95 (total steal), they even have a separate weekend specials menu and their combos are huge portions for $7-9! The portions are big, bigger than I need. I usually spend about $7.95 on an order and get two meals out of it. The real deal here are the Specialty dishes, which are usually around $12 and are super delicious! I've had plenty of tacos, enchiladas, tostadas, etc. here, but the specialty dishes are on the next level of tasty! My latest favorite is their carne guisada; which is so damn comforting and savory and rich and why haven't I ordered this every single time I've come in here??? They don't make their tortillas in house, but they do get them fresh from a little tortilla shop in another town, which explains why I always find them so good. I really like the flour tortillas here. Frankly, I've enjoyed all my experiences here. This is one of those places that makes it easy to support local- good food and easy on the wallet. If you're looking for an old-school Tex-Mex joint that offers up cheesy gooey goodness, this is the place. I was in town to pick up my son from UNT and was jonesing for some Tex-Mex. Between reviews on Yelp and Urban Spoon, Mi Ranchito ended up being the spot. Atmosphere This place is a true dive. A clean and comfortable dive, but a dive nonetheless. (And I like that.) The exterior of the building isn't much. In fact, without the small sign you might have to look twice or three times to know Mi Ranchito is there. The interior is clean, with mismatched accoutrements on the walls -- everything from handcrafted bowls to Tecate posters. The chairs: Vinyl. Service We were taken care of from the moment we walked in the door until the time we left. Everyone was friendly and our orders came out within a reasonable time. So many people offered us service, I wasn't sure whom to tip. Food The real reason we came (as should you). ~ Mi Ranchito serves a cup of delicious seasoned pinto beans with the chips and salsa (I'm assuming they do this all the time). Don't hold back. They're simple but worth the real estate in your stomach. The chips were ... meh. They didn't taste like house-made chips, but they weren't bad. Just not fantastic. The house salsa on the other hand is some of the best I've had in years. It's classic Texas-style smooth, with onion and a touch of cilantro. Not too spicy, but neither is it ultra-mild. Excellent stuff! (Take note other Tex-Mex restaurants: The folks at Mi Ranchito know better than to add cumin to the salsa!) As with any other Tex-Mex joint, my first visit always includes a plate of tamales. They were on special Tuesday night ($5.95 I think), which made it all that much better. I ordered it with double rice (no beans) and a bean and cheese chalupa on the side. All were delicious. I'm not sure who makes their tamales, but the masa/meat ratio is perfect and they are served firm, compared to mushy tamales in so many other restaurants. The chili 'gravy' is very nicely spiced. The rice is anything but an afterthought. Instead of loading it down with frozen peas and carrots, like so many other places, they actually work to provide nice firm and lightly seasoned rice. It was divine. And, as you can see in the photo, Mi Ranchito wasn't stingy with the cheese. The chalupa was good. Really not much different than any other place, but an excellent way to eat more of the house salsa. Bottom Line If you are a chain Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurant eater, chances are you go for the neon, pretty drinks and 20-somethings who say "My name is XXX and I'll be taking care of you tonight." The fact that everything on your plate comes from Con Agra (via Sysco) is a non-factor. -- You shouldn't bother eating here. If you like food. And you also happen to be among those Texas 40-somethings (or older) whose families left church on Sundays for the nearest mom & pop Mexican joint, this is your place in Denton. Cute little restaurant right off of 377 in Denton. Small building with bright colors, and multiple flashing lights at night that you can't miss. Colorful and interesting decorations inside, with booths and tables and chairs to sit at. The chips and salsa are pretty good. They also give some bean soup when you arrive. I didn't have any, as it has meat in it, but others said it was delicious. The rice and beans are vegetarian, and they have guacamole tostadas. Lots of different plates to choose from! Their happy hour beer prices are great! My Modelo was only $2. There are some little desserts at the register for sale if you need a sweet treat after your meal. The employees were kind and helpful, and were even dancing around the restaurant at some times because they're just so happy. Food came out very quickly and was hot. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, you should definitely give this place a try. Although on the smaller side, going into this restaurant you can tell it's very clean and taken care of. The bathroom is close to the front door, and unfortunately a bit too close to where our table was located. We experienced some strange odors that lingered, but thankfully the great bean soup and enchiladas kept our mouths full. On the outside looking in you'll notice a bright orange building with festive lights flashing, very easy to find. Right next door to the DONUT shop. The friendly hostess/waitress seated us immediately and gave us menus. Nice selection here. They brought out some decent chips and fresh tasting salsa to start, as well as some delicious bean soup to hold us over until our enchiladas arrived. I went with the cheese enchiladas, and Ariel had the enchiladas combo. She absolutely loved it, polishing off every last bite of enchilada sauce. I usually come before the dinner hour. When I come there is only one or two tables so the only noise is the servers. The servers are talking to each other while changing shifts but they are all friendly and attentive to the customers. I bring my studies and stay a bit longer than just to eat and leave. They never show that they mind, and continue to check on me. I leave as the dinner crowd shows up so they can have the table. The food is good and you get a small bowl of charro beans when you sit, along with the chips and salsa. My husband loves the beans and ask for a bigger bowl, they don't seem to mind and bring him one. The beans do have good flavor and I wouldn't mind having the recipe. I have not ordered anything I did not like, and I like to try different things. We bring our out of town guest here and we have never been disappointed. Atmosphere reminds me of old Mexico. Bright colors and decorations. The benches are old style, not good for long term studying but good for short term. They have table and chairs but when I come by myself I like the booths. They give the appearance of more private. They have alcohol but I have not tried any so no details on that topic. You must try this place at least once. read more
