Our food was incredible and they even gave me a small complimentary soup so I wasn't eating alone while my wife ate her salad. This will probably be the longest review I ever write. When a restaurant reopens, with new decor and new menu, why is it that reviewers sometimes hold them to the mark the closed restaurant met? Don't people know that that high mark is available to anyone with the courage and skill to reach it? We have loved Corner Kitchen for so many years, and when it closed we were bereft. So where else would we go for our Valentine anniversary than back to Corner Kitchen? Does it look the same? No. Does it feel the same? No. Did the food taste the same? No. We knew we were coming to a different embodiment of a Corner Kitchen. Just as Jack And Natalie's CK was unique, so is this CK. When you come here, and DO come here, remember all this. No one can repeat exactly Jack and Natalie accomplished, just as no one will be able to copy Chef Gavin's style and vision. Now--to our dinner. We had a great meal, beginning with friendly and helpful service from Rebecca. We each had an refreshing adult beverage; one of us had wine and I had a cocktail. Let me begin by saying that each course reflected the expected flavors but with a subtle and gentle newness of flavor that was surprising and delicious. Recognizable? Yes. Run of the mill? No. How clever. Being from Dayton, we had to try the pierogi appetizer. Again, recognizable but inventive. I have to admit I make my own, so this was truly an adventure in flavor and texture, but so good. We had the Seafood Linguine, which was overflowing with clams, red snapper and five jumbo, perfectly cooked shrimp. The seafood was definitely the main feature of the plate. The pasta was flavorful and not overpowering in portion. We also had the Braised Short Rib, and it was just as succulent as you would expect it to be. The red wine sauce/reduction was on point, and the potatoes of course just enhanced the mouth feel of this umami-rich meal. Three desserts were offered. We shared the Crème Brûlée and took home the Hummingbird Cake. Both were delicious, but do not miss that Hummingbird Cake. If I had to find something to complain about, it would stem from my personal distaste for televisions in a restaurant. The sound was off, but still....I prefer to see and feel the ambiance without a screen, especially one blocking such a beautiful bar and backdrop. From the GRIST pasta and focaccia, amazing salads, unbelievable macaroni and cheese to the inventive entrees, Corner Kitchen is one of our favorite places to dine in Dayton. We were beyond thrilled to see the butterscotch pudding back on the menu -- so much so that I insisted on having my own (I usually share with my husband but would likely stab him with my fork if we tried to share this pudding). Hey I just want to see this place was very good! I mean my food was excellent I ordered swordfish sweet potatoes and green beans and baby listen that meal was fire! My friend had mussels and fries and from the looks of it she enjoyed her meal as well. The cocktails were on point also. I made a reservation on Opentable and they were ready to seat us immediately, but my date arrived late (typical). The waitress was super nice, she reminded me of Elizabeth Moss. She would have won an academy award for this performance. We ordered an appetizer, beet salad, and we received watercress soup complimentary. Both were tasty and delicious. Next was mussels, macaroni and cheese, and a squash/zucchini dish. The mussels were subpar. The broth was not satisfying and not flavorful, but the fries and bread were good. Ordered a dry aged steak that was more of a beef jerky. I was told that that is how a dry aged steak comes. This is not the first I've had a dry aged steak and it has never been dry. Have even ordered from a butchered and prepared myself and it turned out amazing. Dry aged steak is how it is aged, not how it is cooked. Should never make it into beef jerky unless it is prepared or cured wrong. Server was very rude when I brought it up, tried to gaslight me into thinking I ordered it wrong. Super disappointing. This is an awesome place to enjoy a nice meal. The dinners all have a different flair to them and the service is always great. I had the side salad to start with. My wife didn't order a starter, so they brought her out a small (china) cup of the soup of the day so she wouldn't feel left out! Such a nice touch! I had the salmon, prepared medium as the chef recommended and she had the macaroni and cheese. They were both great. She had such a large serving she brought home over half of it. We shared the tart of the moment (strawberry and mango). The topping was so amazing they could've just left out the fruit. We love this place and need to go back more often. read more

We were lucky to get a couple of open seats on the patio (it is first come, first serve). The waiter and waitress were both prompt, polite, and helpful. I had the duck carbonara. I was hesitant because it contained pork belly and I wasn't sure how that would balance with a traditional pasta; however, it was different and delicious. The cream-based sauce, which included mushrooms and peas, paired nicely with the duck meat. My date had the macaroni and cheese. I wish she would have added a protein, because I'm sure it would have been better with some chicken. Despite this ordering flaw, it was creamy and satisfactory. Corner Kitchen is, without a doubt, my favorite restaurant in Dayton. We try to make time to have the tasting menu at least once per season, and it's always luxurious and surprising. I ate there tonight, and had the Autumn Almanac cocktail, which was a perfect hit of pure, concentrated fall. They were out of the squash agnolotti, so the server suggested the acorn squash, which she said was one of the best dishes she'd had there. I was honestly skeptical: since when is the gluten free, vegan choice that's the consolation prize for agnolotti a best dish? But the wild rice and dates and pistachios were a perfect complement to the squash, and the tangy, slightly spicy sauce brought it all together. A true home run. And I don't know if this is an upside or a downside, but it was filling enough that I couldn't make room for dessert. Speaking of dessert: this is the only place in Dayton worth eating dessert. I've had a lot of weird flavor combinations that miss the mark in Dayton, but everything in Corner Kitchen desserts is perfectly balanced. The chocolate desserts are usually incredibly rich, and the fruit desserts tend towards the lighter end, so go with a friend and order one of each! (Seriously, I think we try to get over there for just dessert at least once a month.) The ambiance is a little loud for my tastes, and the burger and fries are wholly ordinary, but the rest of the cuisine and the really friendly, helpful servers who work as a team (and are endlessly refilling your water) more than make up for the flaws. All time greatest hits: The scallops. Holy cow. I swear I hated scallops before I met these. They are light and buttery and flavorful but delicate and just...when they're not on the menu I wait for them to come back. Absolutely tied for best scallops in the state of Ohio with my Sicilian mother-in-law's Christmas Eve scallops. Best dessert: raspberry mousse. I know it's only a late spring/early summer thing, but it's so creamy and flavorful with just the right amount of fresh raspberries. I've been known to literally lick the dish. In public. read more

I was in town for work and heard Corner Kitchen was a good spot for dinner so decided to give it a try. Walking in, the ambience was very welcoming and cozy. After brief confusion with the hostess regarding my party that had already arrived, I sat down with a friend for dinner. I got the Tacos as a starter and the burger. I subbed out the regular fries that come with the burger for glorious poutine. The tacos were on point. While eating them, I couldn't help tasting a bit of Skyline chili similarities. I told our server, Cathy with a C, about this revelation, and she said there was cinnamon in the recipe. Fantastic. The burger was great, poutine rocked. The whole meal was extremely good and the service via Cathy with a C was excellent. This restaurant never fails to impress. My wife and and I have been there three times and each time we find something new to try that makes us want to come back again. We seem to get Laura as our waitress every time we go....if you have the chance to ask for her specifically, I'd recommend you do! She's the the best!! Never rushed. Try the mussels, pork chop (when they have it), and the meatloaf. Great choices for cocktails, wine and local brews...you can't go wrong. I've heard rave reviews about this place from some very trusted foodies and finally got the opportunity to try it. Corner Kitchen did not disappoint! We - my group of 3 - arrived at a prime dinner time and even though there were clearly open tables, the hostess told us there would be about a 10 minute wait before they would seat us so as not to overwhelm the kitchen. That aside, I used that time to scope out the atmosphere. Very cozy and inviting with a top-notch fully stocked bar. Tables were pretty close together and it was easy to feel like you were in someone else's conversation or backing up to them with your chair. But the food is what I came for and that is what gets 5 stars. I chose the entrée sized portion of the pan seared scallops (I think it's listed as a small version under the small plate section of the menu). FANTASTIC! Scallops were fresh and perfectly cooked with a delicate texture and flavor. They were served alongside mashed sweet potatoes (so creamy and sinfully good!) and what tasted like a lemon pickled cabbage. The picture doesn't do it justice. A made from scratch, high quality meal that I enjoyed every bite of! They also had some great vegan options that satisfied one of my dinner dates. My husband and I were traveling through Dayton and found this place. It is such a hidden gem in a fun and exciting neighborhood. The place was packed for a Tuesday night. I called to make reservations from the road and it wasn't a problem. The restaurant has a warm and inviting feel. The cocktails were so insanely good and $8! My husband had the What's your Sign. It was so well balanced with a perfect hint of rosemary. I had the Miami drink. The balance of cardamom was so perfect and not overly sweet or floral at all The food was just as amazing! I started with the beet salad. The earthiness of the beets paired perfectly with the salty goat cheese and the balsamic vinegar to give it a bite. We both had the sausage and sauerkraut. The sausages were well smoked and the sauerkraut gave a good hint of acid. The mustards were so good! Even the honey mustard had a hint of spice. To top it all off, my husband had the strawberry shortcake. The biscuits were so flaky and buttery. The strawberries gave that hint of sweetness. Service was amazing! Sure, there were things I would change if I could. like I would give complimentary bread and butter instead of charging $2 for it. I would have more of a drought selection. I've been to Corner Kitchen twice now under the new management - I'm just not impressed. The filet I got the first time was well cooked but the sides were just 'ok', I was there about 2 months ago and honestly, it took me a long time of staring at the menu to remember what I had last time - it was that un-memorable. This time, I got the salmon entree. The salmon itself was cooked perfectly; it had a nice and crispy sear on the top, well seasoned and the pickled mustard seed was perfect. But the 'spicy honey' that was drizzled around the plate was not spicy at all. Just tasted like clover honey - not even good honey. And yet again, the side/accompaniment, which was a bed of 'parsnip creamy risotto' it was sitting on was almost inedible - no, it was inedible; I took one bite and couldn't eat the rest. And I'm a 'clean your plate girl' even when I'm not pregnant so the fact that I couldn't finish it, says a lot. The risotto was not hot, or even warm, it was almost room temp/cool, grossly under seasoned and almost sweet with hard, unwilted raw, huge leaves of mustard greens mixed in it. First - who puts parsnips in anything but a root veggie stew?? They have less flavor than a potato. Second, the raw greens mixed in was a terrible idea. It completely threw off the texture of the whole dish. Risotto should be a creamy, punchy, flavorful dish that should remind you of 'the old country' and if you're gonna add a veggie to it, add some crunchy broccoli, a nice carrot, some onion, a grilled tomato even - if you wanna do a leafy green, go for some wilted spinach. But not raw mustard greens that taste worse than kale. And for the love of all that is holy, add some salt to it! The whole vibe of the new Corner Kitchen feels like some unironic hippie is trying to make it cool by adding things like parsnips and mustard greens to random dishes and putting an overwhelming number of 'eclectic' pictures on the walls but overall it feels like someone trying to make an old Red Lobster more trendy. Your focus should be on making the whole dish actually taste amazing and work together. Other Tips to the new management: Get matching silverware (preferably higher quality than the off brand Walmart that is currently there). Buy some quality tableware that doesn't look like it comes from the scratch and dent section of IKEA. The meat there is great, I have no complaints there - I've heard the braised short ribs are amazing and my filet and salmon were awesome. Love that you put the dry age oven right in the front - maybe do something with that - capitalize on it; make that your 'thing' instead of just a random collection of stuff that looks like people were just getting rid of stuff at a college dorm yard sale. Just overall: BE BOLDER. Paint everything black and white or some other 'theme', put in some cool lights, bring someone in that has an eye for that kind of stuff if you need to, but the way it stands right now, the place feels slightly weird and a little sad and just lacks that 'je ne sais quoi' that keeps customers coming back. My sister and I visited here on a Saturday night and were ready for a food filled night. I was really looking forward to trying out some of their small dishes. I started off the evening with an Island Mojito and it was delicious, by far my favorite item of the night. We ordered 3 small plates for our dinner to share: the avocado and roasted tomato toasts, the beets & goat cheese, and the nachos. The avocado & roasted tomato toasts were good, but the avocados weren't able to shine with the roasted tomatoes overpowering them. Overall, a good bruschetta, but not what we expected. The beets and goat cheese were decent, but the goat cheese seemed to have zero flavor to offer the dish. The mixed greens and beets were good, but needed the goat cheese to lend some creaminess to the dish. Lastly, we had the nachos, which were the favorite. The tortilla chips seemed to be made in house and were quite sturdy. It included beans, cheese, guac, and pico de gallo. This was a large order, and we weren't able to finish all of it! We concluded the night with a brownie hot fudge sundae, which was solid. Warm brownie, cold vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, with nuts and a cherry. Overall, the service outshined the food, even though we had to wait about 15 - 20 minutes to even request our check. There was an oil or grease burn in the kitchen, which is open, so we left smelling like burnt oil. Womp womp. read more

Went here for a birthday dinner. The attitude was pretentious. Waitstaff mediocre. Food underwhelming. Alcohol overpriced. Came with a young group not very dressed up. They sat us outside because "they were booked with reservations" even though there were at least 10 open tables inside. Took them 15 minutes and 4 people to turn the outdoor heaters on. Waiter then came out with a long list of specials that he rambled on about. We ordered and it took a long time to get the courses out. A female in my group ordered the mussels. While serving her the waiter TIPPED THE PLATE AND SPILLED THE JUICES DOWN HER LEGS. He brought a napkin then said "is there anything else you need medically or food wise?" The meal was not comped and the manager did not come out to apologize. Not even a free drink or dessert. Even ignoring that GLARING mishap the food here was just okay. Half chicken was not browned and was under seasoned. Asparagus unremarkable. Potatoes were the best part, but bordered on oily. Too bad the ostentatious crowd that hangs out here is willing to pay for atmosphere and don't have the palate to discern quality. In a different city with more competition for trendy dining this place would be closed already. Save your time and money and go to Dublin Pub across the street for better food and service. read more

My friend & I sat at the bar & we were quickly greeted and given drink menus. They have quite a selection of crafted cocktails as well as several local craft beers on draft. I decided on a Moscow mule, and we ordered an appetizer of their avocado bruschetta. The bruschetta was fantastic! For dinner, I tried the chorizo tacos with a side of fries. My friend had the salmon small plate. Both of our dinners were great. My tacos had lots of flavor without being overwhelmingly spicy. The fries are excellent as well, they are thick but still crispy.
