LOVE this place, only wish it was a bit closer to home!!! Where was this concept when I was going through my awkward "I want to drink, but I also want to hang out with friends, actually ENJOY their company, NOT have to navigate the "bar scene," and genuinely have a FUN time" phase?!? ZILLIONS of games, an industrial, yet cozy atmosphere, TONS of eclectic brews on tap, food options nearby, young/old/middle of the road crowd, and a friendly, knowledgeable bartender all made for a GREAT first impression on our recent Sunday late afternoon visit a few weeks ago. Plenty of well-spaced tables both inside and out, plus seats at the bar and a few chairs/sofas. Our friends live right down the road from this place, and come in all the time to hang out, play games, and try local and interesting new brews. D20 is good for gamers. If anyone you know likes board games. They have free ones to play with. It has an okay beer list with many from local breweries. The cocktails are as good as anywhere, and make games even more fun. Atmosphere seems like it brings in the not so usual crowd. It's a bar for geeks. There's a difference between them and nerds, but both would be welcome. If you like any board games, there's a good chance they have it. There's also many books and comics, so a lot of reading material. It's pretty much a bar for geeks. It's a niche bar, so there won't be drunken hillbillies. This hole-in-the-wall bar is a complete GEM. I loved all the decorations that I could nerd out to (Harry Potter, Totoro,etc.) and the atmosphere was so relaxed and friendly. Dogs are also allowed, which made this place even better on my list. There was a good variety of drinks on deck; I chose to get the "Bend the Knee" beer (shoutout to GOT fans ) and the prices for the sizes weren't bad. A 20oz was around $9 I believe, and a 12oz was $6. THE VARIETY OF BOARD GAMES HERE WAS AMAZING. I felt like a kid in a candy store when I was trying to figure out what game to play. They also have a whole shelf of books to choose from if anyone felt like reading. What a fun nerdy bar! A gaggle of my girl-pals and I stopped in after our GNO (Girls night out) dinner for a drink and a few games. None of us had been here before, but we were looking for a chill place to grab an adult beverage and to not have to scream across the "ambient" noise to have a conversation. D20 was perfect! There is a wide host of craft beers, select wines, and cocktails. The bartenders were patient with my pickiness and offered some great recommendations and a few small samples before I landed on a stout that met my tasters needs. The place was pretty busy and we found 1 open table in the back. There is a large wall of bookcases loaded with board and card games. Among some of my favorites were: Candyland, Apples to Apples, Code Names, The 5 Second Rule, and The Worst Case Scenario board game. There were so many more and I saw hosts of people playing games and having, what appear to be, a great time! There isn't a kitchen, but I noted pizza deliveries and a little Chinese place next door if you get hungry. Marc's grocery is also next door so you can stock up on some snacks before you come to park it, drink, and play. D20 is a nice and unique addition to the bar scene. D20 isn't the sort of place I'd probably visit on my own, so my review of this establishment will be unrefined on the details of the games. I apologize in advance. D20 is a bit of a curiosity, though. My boyfriend discovered it and I'd never heard of a gaming bar. So, we put together a couple of people and went on an adventure. The establishment is huge. At the front left is a vast wall of books. Over top of the bookcases looms the Thought Police, telling you that you might have had a bit too much to think. Lots of Lovecraft, King, Gaiman, manga, even some Tom Clancy mixed in. Opposite the books stands the wall of games. Just a ridiculous number of games. My friends and boyfriend were listing all the games they had played and wanted to play. It got a little dreamy in there. I was pleased to see Guess Who? I learned it's one of their most popular games. I guess I'm not alone. The woman who was working was really friendly and I should remember her name but I don't. I think I was overwhelmed by all the names of the alcohol I was surrounded by. The list of beers represented on the wall was stunning. If you can't pick, the drinks are numbered and they offer you a die to roll to help you select. The best were the mixed drinks. Sonic Screwdriver. Space Cowboy. The Lovecraft. Sadly, it was too early in the day and I had too much to do later to try anything. Those cocktails look incredible. My boyfriend and I had cream sodas which were nice. One person in our party had a King Cake soda which is really very cinnamon and sweet. Another person had wine. She seemed pleased. We played Mysterium. Badly. And a marble game. I believe we were there around five or six hours and no one got fussy with us or gave us the eye. Which I realize that's what this establishment is supposed to be. But still. It's cool that it really worked out that way. One of the most interesting, random things about the place is the ceiling. When I commented on it, I was told it is essentially 13 ply toilet paper and would be soft to the touch. I'm guessing it's for acoustics. At one point it hit me, there was no music. I don't know if it's to be heard easily or if we were just there at an off time and the music wasn't up yet. I will definitely return to try some drinks. And play connect four or something simple and not as tricky to learn as Mysterium. read more

Went here with a couples Meetup at 5:00 pm on a Saturday. The 10 of us were the only people there. When we left around 7:00 pm, the place was almost full...get there early if you want to snag a table! There are hundreds of board games to choose from & our group grabbed 4 different ones. There are also 1000 piece puzzles if you're daring enough to try that. I don't drink so I can't judge the alcohol but there is fresh brewed root beer and that's a winner in my book. We had 2 large bottles of water on our table which tasted good, probably filtered, and that was nice. They serve the water in beautiful glass bottles - classy! There is no food served here but you are welcome to bring your own. I noticed others bringing fast food/pizza or even having it delivered. Eating while drinking is a must! I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out here & definitely want to return. read more

This place is NEAT! One wall is full of board games, the other full of books. The pop culture decor is great, and the establishment is very clean. I arrived during trivia night and it was a blast (and challenging)! I was beyond impressed with the friendliness of the staff. You can tell they pay attention to and respect their regulars; they even wished a regular happy birthday via announcement. They were very welcoming to newcomers likr myself. Pricing is reasonable. I really wish i could give 4.5 stars.... the .5 missing only being because they dont serve food. I understand not wanting to be a bar and grill but.... I'm sure there is /something/ that could be provided... luckily there is a chinese establishment next door, and you can always have food delivered. This review isn't based on a full experience, so I will definitely have to return. But I will give you the heads up that this place gets pretty busy on a Friday/Saturday night. You won't find an empty seat in the place. So either come prepared to wait or arrive early! And this is saying something considering the size of the place. It's about the size of any chain, sit-down restaurant and feels quite open. The wall of games is on your left as you enter and there are plenty to choose from. My only complaint is that it's only drinks and very light snacks. For me, I would love for them to develop a fun little menu. I'm not going to lie, I didn't know what to expect. This place ended up being super chill with a nice selection of craft beers. I was pleasantly surprised to see they had a large assortment of nonalcoholic sodas as well. They had a huge wall full of board and card games. I even saw a bookshelf with some books. When I went, I got some Warped Wing Root Beer on draft (because I love their root beer) and a group of us played Sushi Go! I would recommend bringing food in! They let you eat at their tables since they don't provide any food. There's a Chinese Takeout place right next door. We got food from Kroger and made sandwiches and chips! The mainstreaming of "geek culture" has had its casualties, but for the most part, its been pretty awesome improvement for those of us who were geek before it was cool. Ten years ago, a "casual gamer hangout with a drink menu" could really only have meant "Gary's basement and a mini-fridge full of Mountain Dew". Oh, how far we've come. Despite the "bar" name and boozy inventory, the atmosphere at D20: A Bar With Characters is more akin to a coffeeshop than a pub, with a large couch, comfy chairs, and a bookshelf full of manga, comics, and SF/F books. The lack of espresso machine was actually a bit of a surprise on my first visit...it would have been a good fit. The bar has a bunch of craft and specialty brews both on tap and in bottles, including a couple of craft ciders and a surprising variety of meads. Yes, meads...this is a geek hangout after all. They also have a bunch of clever pop culture-themed cocktails with names like "Combustible Lemon", "Sonic Screwdriver", and "Space Cowboy". Their non-alcoholic options are a bit thin (surprising, in an all-ages establishment), but they do have some craft sodas and the bartenders can make many of their pop culture cocktails without the booze. This is great for me because I took the "Non-Drinker" trait at first level and gorramit I swore I was gonna make it through this without any gamer jokes I'm so sorry. The board game selection is both massive and diverse, ranging from massive weekend-killers like Twilight Imperium to quick party games like Cards Against Humanity and Killer Bunnies. They even have a few Monopoly boxes for people who, frankly, probably don't get a lot of value out of board game bars. True to their name, they have a large library of D&D rule books available to borrow...in third, fourth, AND fifth edition. if you want to debate the relative merits of those editions (and why wouldn't you?), then you can bet you'll find a willing partner at D20. Every trip to the bar or shelves seems to result in a delightfully spirited conversation with a stranger about new game acquisitions, or favorite beers, or what to expect from the next Marvel crossover event. Its like a little slice of Gen Con, without the huge crowds or soul-crushing expense. D20 doesn't serve food, but they are carry-in friendly and the tables are big enough to handle a proper dinner AND a fully-unpacked euro-game. Several area restaurants will happily deliver to your table, so you don't have to quit playing/drinking to refuel. From the Welcome to Night Vale posters, in the bathroom, to the friendly and cheerful staff, to the weekly card-playing events, D20 just NAILS that perfect balance between Neo-Geek accessibility and old-school familiarity. This has quickly become one of my favorite places to hang out with friends in the Dayton area. I love how quiet it is. You can tell they worked very hard to get the right atmosphere. The game selection is just mind blowing- there are always things on the shelf I've never heard of, and just about every favorite is available. Always a good beer selection as well, and I'm pleased they offer several size glasses for nights I want to try lots of new things. The only negative thing I can think of about D20 is my cellular service is pretty much non existent inside, but that's not their fault. What a wonderful place to hang out! Full bar for us, stuff for the kids. It's totally family friendly but it's also a place for adult groups who want a great place to play games and drink a beer. They don't serve food, but encourage patrons to bring their own. There's a little library of delivery menus with the books, and China Garden has good food next door. Run over and order and they'll bring it to you. Seriously, if you have been wanting to try out some games but didn't want to drop money for something you might play once or twice, come here. They have a wall of all different types of games! If you have a game at home but not enough room to play it, come here. Great sturdy tables and comfy chairs. A friend invited me here the other night, and I'll tell you, I had no idea what to expect. When I heard "d20" I was uncertain. I'm not a Dungeons and Dragons type of person, and all that goes along with that stereotype. I've never even seen anyone play it, until tonight. Spending 4 hours playing Scrabble and that Cyanide and Happiness came made me realize two things about the surroundings: All the people in this bar are incredibly nice and accommodating. The workers, the regulars, the people like me coming in to check it out for the first time... Everyone was incredibly chill. It was truly the perfect environment to hang out with your friends, relax, play some amazing games, and drink (of course)!! I have a new appreciation for the type of people that this place attracts. Sure, I witnessed​ some... well, behavior and such that was strange to me... But I could honestly say that I bet anyone in this bar is approachable and friendly. I think that's what matters most. Beyond that all, this place has a brilliant drink list and seems to have a friendly relationship with the Chinese restaurant next door. I wish there were more places as welcoming and friendly as this bar. It's certainly a place to recommend to your friends as a hang out spot. read more

I love this place. If you want to do gaming--RPGs or board games--this is a great spot. But it's also a very decent beer spot with a great tap list, extremely generous pours, good prices, and very friendly staff. Nice area out front for either smokers or just sitting outside. No outside drinks allowed (even water or soda) but they have artisanal sodas on tap if you don't drink, and outside food is allowed. Special events some nights of the week.
