I can't necessarily consider myself an expert on Indian food, but it is a cuisine both my wife and I love, and I daresay we have been to every single Indian restaurant in Austin at least once. It's hard to go too far wrong with Indian joints. Most all of them can serve up acceptable facsimiles of the more common dishes. Until this week, we've had a couple of other fav. Indian joints we frequent. We've driven past this relatively new place (open a bit over a year, according to the owner (manager?)), but, as others have stated, it is plagued with one of the worst possible locations for a restaurant, and so has been overlooked on our dining list. For those readers trying to pinpoint the location, it's on the westbound Hwy 290 access road, just west of Westgate blvd, and adjacent to the Holiday Inn. That all changed this week when I finally arranged to meet a buddy there for a pre-music-night-on-the-town fest. Oh man, the first bite I took of the Samosas we ordered had me sold. Without doubt these Samosas are hands down the best ever. We then followed that up with some standards.. chicken masala, a wonderful lamb kabob, and Onion Naan. We asked for spicy, and my god that masala came out muy fuerte.. those of you with pansy palates will want to opt for the 'regular' spice level, but for both of us this extra jolt was a nice refreshing, and unusual touch to the meal. And that Naan... omigod.. to die for. I might very well consider my next meal to be just a big plate of Naan and some basmati rice. As an added bonus we found the prices to be somewhat less than our other favorite houses (all now to become second-favorite). With appetizers and more food than the two of us big horses could put down, the total bill was $32 (granted, we passed on beer for the meal). Well, I was so enthralled that I went back again, on my own, on the following Saturday to check out the buffet. Of course food at a buffet line is never quite as good as prepared-to-order dishes, but I still found all the same staple dishes to be well above average, and will now be a regular. As a final touch, the owner came around to each table of diners while I was there to check on our experience, and carried on a nice conversation with me showing genuine interest. It's these little touches that make a great eating experience. I know that here in McDonaldLand, there have been reviewers who complained about having to wait a few minutes to get served. These are probably the same folks who would go to France and then complain that the server didn't speak English, and couldn't produce a bottle of ketchup for their "moules avec pomme frites"! C'mon folks... this IS foreign cuisine, at a location owned and staffed by genuine Indians, observing Indian-style dining and serving customs, some of whom obviously don't count English as their primary language. Does everything have to be instant gratification in this town? Shouldn't something be said in favor of the opportunity to just relax, savor and experience foreign cuisine, culture, and customs, right here at the epicenter of meat-and-potato land? Thank you, Royal India, for your contribution to variety in our eating habits! May you thrive for many years so I can make many repeat visits! read more

I was so excited returning to Royal India after my first experience there because the Saag Paneer was mind-blowingly awesome. Rich, creamy, buttery even. To die for. I would salivate thinking about it. My recent experience, however, was awful. After looking forward to eating here all day and having to go through stressful obstacles to make it happen, I finally took a bite of my saag paneer ... and it was unbelievably spicy. I always order mild. If this was mild, spicy would melt your silverware. I kindly told the frowning host that my dish was much spicier than the last time I had ordered it. He immediately whisked it back to the kitchen. A short time later, a frowning server brought me another dish. The bowl was only a third full of food as opposed to the full dish I had started out with and had only taken a few spoon fulls out of, which I then did not touch because it was too spicy for me. Like, so spicy I couldn't even taste the food. Well, I'm home now writing this review because I'm starving and upset. I finished the snack-size serving they returned to me and had to choke it down with water because it was still spicy. Makes me wonder if they just took my dish back there, scooped out the majority of it and returned it to me. I aslo wonder if they have a different cook for different days. My first experience was at lunch on a weekday. I do not like to be confrontational in any way, and since the people are very distant, I did not feel comfortable saying anything to them. There are other places in Austin that are also amazing AND consistent in quality of food with much friendlier environments. Not sure if I'll test my luck again with this place. read more

I've probably been here at least 20 times, and the lunch buffet has always been amazing! I've tried a few Indian buffets or restaurants here in Austin, and though I love the food it's usually pretty greasy and slim pickings on the lunch buffets. Royal India has such delicious, flavorful food and such a great variety that every time I come here I am pleasantly surprised with the new additions and my standard favorite dishes that never disappoint. The service is also excellent, and the atmosphere is somewhat fine dining, which is different for most buffet style restaurants. For a very affordable price you get your pick of about 20 different hot dishes and a generous salad bar. I'm crazy about the saag paneer, chicken tikki masala, beef meatballs and an array of delicious dishes that I can't always pronounce but are always amazing. read more

Yup, a food truck off E. 6th in downtown Austin TX pumping out the Indian food of my dreams. Confession Session: I have never personally visited said food truck or been to this location. But every single visit to ATX includes me ordering Madras Dhaba delivery to my hotel. Turn around time has always been rather quick and accurate. So what are my go-to orders? They are their delish and slightly spicy two piece samosa, their paratha, and saag paneer. This place has odd hours, apparently closed on Wed, and I typically will order on Thurs nights. I have found that their menu offerings can vary depending on when you're ordering. On a Tues they didn't have Saag Panner on the menu so I opted for Panner Tiki Masala, still delish but not as good as that Saag Panner. Also their rice is S O good! I've recently found myself also ordering their Panner Tikka Tacos and yes...those have now become an absolute staple that I feel inclined to include in every order. Don't you judge me. I have also had their Veg Biriyani and was satisfied with that as well. TBH I have legit never been disappointed with anything I have had from Madras Dhaba. The flavors, the portions, the price. They all come together and create what I have previously described as my fav Indian joint. Will I end up visiting in person, I would hazard a guess and say yes, some day I will actually eat at the food truck. But until then, you can find me ordering delivery from them and having way too much food that is way too good to be as cheap as it is at my hotel. That's it. That's the review.
