Went to Knotty Pine this morning for breakfast and was excited to try it again after many years. The service was amazing. Our waitress was super sweet and very attentive, making sure to refill coffee promptly and checking that everything was OK. The coffee was great and they had a sugar dispenser rather than the sugar packets which is always something I appreciate. The food was just OK. The gravy was good, but I wasn't a fan of the ridiculously large sausage patty, and my pancake was so rubbery on one side that I couldn't even cut through it with my fork. I've never had that issue with a pancake in my life. Very off-putting. Doubt I'll return. read more

Copes is back to 5 stars with their great comfort food. The chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken and ribeyes are made like they were on my first visit. Biscuits and gravy and hash-browns are cooked perfectly! I always loved the employees and servers, they are quality! I ordered 2 biscuits and gravy for the table as an appetiser and our server was kind enough to split on 2 plates. The biscuits were fluffy and very tasty. My buddy ordered a cheese burger and fries, I know it was good because he pounded it in a few minutes and looked stuffed. My chicken fried steak was crispy on the outside and the meat was tender. The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars you ask? I had to salt just about everything on the plate. I'm not sure if that's a bad thing, but I had to add a lot of salt to the gravy, fries, eggs, and hash browns. Some people like it that way, but I think the cooks should add a little bit of salt to remove the bland. Omgoodness this place is a literally slice of heaven. The food was so good. It is so small on the outside, I passed right by it. Once I realized where I was going, I noticed that I missed it because it had the parking lot FULL of work trucks. Their menu was extensive and modestly priced. We ordered a variety of breakfast & lunch items and everyone enjoyed their meals. The portions are generous. A group of friends and I were spending the weekend in Bakersfield and decided to meet up for breakfast at the Knotty Pine. Immediately upon arrival we loved the carved wooden bear and eagle on the roof--as well as the kind of "log cabin" decor inside. We told them we'd have 6 people but only 4 of us were already there, but they were able to seat us right away once they pushed two tables together. Two of our friends were running late, but our server happily put in their food order as soon as they were able to send it to us by text message! All the portions were huge. Really impressive. I ordered the ham steak, which was an old school-style slab of ham with the bone still in--and it took up my entire plate! On a separate plate I got eggs (scrambled with cheese) and breakfast potatoes and for my "toast" side, I got a pancake (which was crispy on top and soft and gooey in the middle and bottom, really good). Everybody loved their food and especially raved about the biscuits (which I myself didn't get to try). Our server rolled with the punches despite the restaurant being pretty busy on a Sunday morning, and she split our bill into 3 separate checks with no complaints. Homey, friendly, lots of character. The food is great no complains there which is why I gave them 2 stars instead of 1. I have been here numerous times and the girls that have seated my family the past 3-4 have been awful. In my last encounter they told us you can sit over there didn't even point or walk us to the table, which is fine but the attitude on her was uncalled for. They always seem annoyed and turn their back to you while ordering your drinks. Not only that they don't write down the drinks and don't bring all the drinks ordered. If they cannot remember they should write it down. We have been sat sitting for up to 30 mins with no menus and when the server finally comes after another 30 we still need menus. A simple 2 sec check in between tables would be okay even if wait was the same. Even the chain breakfast stops have better service. Honestly, from the 1st time here to now it is a complete 180, seems employees need some manner courses and some customer service lessons. Will not be coming back. read more

We were looking for a good basic breakfast. Yelp brought us to Cope's Knotty Pine Cafe. We were greeted as soon as we stepped in. Our party of two was seated in a room that wasn't being used at the time but we soon had company. I've never been a fan of being seated where no one else is because sometimes the host and the staff don't communicate and no one knows that you're there. Not the case here. Everyone that we spoke to was friendly and looked happy to be at work. We were a couple of opposites today. She choose the waffle with blueberries. The blueberries were mixed into the batter before the waffle was cooked. Other than being a little light in color and therefore not super crispy, it was good. Douse it with syrup and smear on the butter and we have a winner. Food score - 3. Mine was a bit more challenging. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy, Eggs - over easy, Biscuit and Gravy as my bread choice and Hash Browns, Lonnies Style which adds Bacon, Onions and Cheese for just $2 more. I'm afraid the steak was way too large and tough, the breading fried hard; the gravy was simply too thick and needed to be blended down so that it didn't coagulate which made it less than appealing to the eye. The hash browns were very good and the eggs were perfect. I was too tired from fighting with the steak to even play with the biscuit.
