It pains me to write this review. I have been a faithful Luke's lover for several years, and my husband I have made it our regular haunt for steak in the Fresno area, but our last experience left a bitter taste in our mouths and we're not going back- which actually saddens me.
First off, small changes have taken effect lately at Cool Hand Luke's, but I could have looked past that. They have traded out their classic butter pats for some whipped garlic spread, which is sub par. Portions have also changed slightly, but again I could live with that because we love their rolls, salads, and usually their meat.
We dined with friends after church a few weeks ago. The service was absolutely lousy, and the restaurant was not crowded (to say the least), so it wasn't a case of being understaffed and overly crowded. Our friends ordered one of the meal platters that comes with 2 meats, etc., and the serving was TINY compared to the normal amount of food. We are all regulars, so we were well aware of how large the average portions are. Our waitress rarely stopped by, our drinks were hardly ever refilled, and even when our friends complained about the portion (since they had ordered the same thing a mere 2 weeks before), they did nothing to compensate or explain.
Still, I would have gone back after all of this, except for the end of our experience at lunch. We got our bill, and I paid cash, including tip. I am always a 20%+ girl, and I will only leave less under truly terrible circumstances. My husband was NOT amused by the service, and insisted I leave less than normal. So, I still left a tip although it wasn't our normal fare. So, we left our cash, our friends paid their bill and left an equally small tip because of the same complaints, and we went on our way. We stopped at the restroom, were milling about in the lobby chatting, cooing over their baby, and were still hanging out in the lobby when our waitress came up to me. She insisted I had shorted her $5. The funny thing was, she didn't want to hand me the folder, and when she did, there were bills in there but it wasn't the same bill folder we had put our money in. She basically accused me of not paying the whole bill, which I found comical, since we were obviously in no rush to leave. I am meticulous with my money, and knew exactly how much cash we had when we sat down at Luke's for lunch, as I had JUST counted it before we sat so I knew exactly what we could afford in cash. She ran off and didn't even wait to talk to me or for me to give her the extra cash. I grudgingly put five more dollars in, against my husband's suggestion that we take it up with the manager, and we left. The best part was, when I sat down in the car and recounted our cash, I was exactly $5 short. Coincidence? I. Think. Not. Pretty sure our friend the lousy waitress wanted a bigger tip, and that was the way she decided to take matters into her own hands. So, while I love Luke's, I'm not exactly a fan of being over charged and taken advantage of. No worries though, because Outback, Cattlemen's and Tahoe Joe's have proven absolutely fabulous :) read more
