However, the dress has clear indicators--including the tag, buttons, and front design details--that distinguish the inside from the outside. The incorrect stitching left visible needle holes in the fragile fabric and left the alteration work, which should have been concealed on the inside of the dress, visible on the outside when the dress is worn. I explained that I was not comfortable having the alteration undone because the dress is very old and the fabric is fragile. I was concerned that removing the stitches could cause additional damage. The owner would only refund the alteration fee if she was allowed to undo the work. Since I did not want to risk further damage to my dress, I declined. I was disappointed that a refund for an incorrectly performed alteration was conditioned on allowing additional work to be done to such a delicate garment. Mistakes can happen, but I was disappointed with how this situation was handled. I would encourage anyone bringing in vintage or heirloom items to use caution.
