When I raised the issue, I was told it wasn't clear which side was the inside versus the outside. However, the dress has clear indicators--including the tag, buttons, and front design details--that distinguish the inside from the outside. The incorrect stitching left visible needle holes in the fragile fabric and left the alteration work, which should have been concealed on the inside of the dress, visible on the outside when the dress is worn. I explained that I was not comfortable having the alteration undone because the dress is very old and the fabric is fragile. I was concerned that removing the stitches could cause additional damage. The owner would only refund the alteration fee if she was allowed to undo the work. Since I did not want to risk further damage to my dress, I declined. I was disappointed that a refund for an incorrectly performed alteration was conditioned on allowing additional work to be done to such a delicate garment. Mistakes can happen, but I was disappointed with how this situation was handled. I would encourage anyone bringing in vintage or heirloom items to use caution.

I saw some colleagues at an event, that looked like they were born to be put inside those suits... and that's because they were. The ones I bought were fine, but definitely had some oddities with the fit. Enter: Tran Tailor. To my surprise, there were not an ample number of alterations places in the area, or at least, many of them appeared to be more for wedding/prom dresses. But Tran's website said they did suits, so I made the trek over here. They took my measurements, and asked if I could come back in about a month. I didn't need the suits for a while, so the wait was longer than I expected, but it didn't bother me. When I went to pick them up, one of the suits felt pretty good, while the other one was too tight. They were the same exact suit, just a different color, but they adjusted them differently, I get it -- humans are doing these changes, not robots. Still, it wasn't the most convenient, as I had to come back a 2nd time. They 2nd time, the suit still wasn't as good as the other one, but good enough, Overall, they got the job done. It wasn't cheap, it took a while, and it's definitely not the ideal fit like something custom, but I'm in better shape than I was before I initially came.

Being new to the area and very petite, I was in need of a local tailor. Decided to give Fancy Pants Tailor a shot since their website said they specialized in formalwear. Right up my alley of needs. Michelle was prompt in responding to my query on their website and setting up an appointment, and I can't tell you how convenient it is for them to come to me instead of my having to hunt through The Woodlands for a shop (inevitably hidden behind trees, being The Woodlands). Michelle and her mom arrived promptly for the appointment, bringing along everything necessary to get me measured and fitted in the dress I needed altered. They were very friendly and professional and also extremely helpful in making sure I was wearing the underthings/heels I wanted with the dress so it would fit perfectly. They also explained exactly what needed to be taken up (hemmed, obviously, as I am five foot short) and taken in (the bust/shoulders). They also gave me options for how I wanted the top taken in: a quick fix that would be cheaper or a more precise fit (involving recutting the armholes and realigning the entire top and back) which would cost more. I picked the more expensive option because I wanted to alter the dress to fit from now onward, and not just for a one-time wear. I felt the prices were reasonable for their work -- and when I got the dress delivered back (another perk!), the worksmanship was great -- and the timeline reasonable. To be fair, I wasn't in a rush. The dress took about 9 days total, but anything with more delicate fabric or more work to be done may take longer. Of course, simpler things may also take less time. They will give you a timeline at the appointment and I'm sure you can discuss with them if your needs are different. Great work, very friendly, and very convenient. We only needed Kim to shorten the dress because it was too long. Too late to return the dress so my vision was completely ruined. They didn't put in a boning in my tummy area and they claimed they did. My friend who knows sewing was with me and she had them completely take the dress apart in the tummy and guess what? There was no boning. They refunded me $80/90. When I told them it's not holding my tummy in how a corset would, they told me that's just your tummy. I'm a 170 lbs size 12 person. I'm not skinny but mind you a corset is supposed to snatch my waist. My friend was appalled by the way their faces changed when i asked to put the dress on after alteration was completed before he boning issue was discovered.
