Ambiance for studying is good, with even a little greenery and a fireplace. I visited Compass coffee today on 5/14/23 around 2pm with my husband and multiple of his coworkers. All were wearing law enforcement memorial shirts for a coworker killed in the line of duty being honored during National Police Week. Walking in we really enjoyed the environment and menu selection, but our experience quickly took a turn for the worst. As my husband and his coworkers ordered their drinks the woman working the register (in a plaid shirt ) stared at their memorial shirts, identified them as police officers, and immediately became hostile, curt, and avoided eye contact. She denied his form of payment (total was $14.19 and he handed her $15 cash) impolitely noting she "couldn't make change" - still not making eye contact. No apology. No remedy offered. Just stood there, staring at her register, expecting him to pull out a credit card and swipe without any verbal cue. Abruptly following their exchange she turned around and mumbled something to her coworker (short curly brown hair) making our drinks, who in turn stared them up and down and scoffed as she grabbed the cups. As each of us picked up our drinks we said "thank you." No eye contact or response from the barista, even though she was quite friendly to the rest of her customers during our short visit. We left, walked down the road, and dumped our coffees in the trash. After hopping on their website to see how to make a more formal, private complaint to the company outside of Yelp I noticed this coffee company was founded by two Marines. This is pretty ironic considering the staff that represent them daily obviously do not have any respect for the men and women who serve our country and put their lives on the line daily. We were in dire need of a quick pick me up after a very emotional week here in DC, and this encounter just brought our spirits down even further. We could've chosen to re-enter the establishment, speak to a manager, and make a fuss about it in front of their customers. But this wasn't about the $14.19 we just wasted. This wasn't about the personal disrespect we felt as a group. This complaint needed to go online to inform any future police officers or supporters looking for a quick cup of coffee in Georgetown. Heed our warning: skip Compass coffee and head to another place nearby. Compass coffee founders, managers and staff: we do not want to silence your opinions. Everyone has different beliefs. Some appreciate cops and the job they do, and some do not. We understand that. But you're in the business of serving coffee- a customer service industry job. You signed up to serve all walks of life, not just the ones you agree with. Leave your attitude at the door and serve all your customers with equal respect. We aren't asking you to do a tap dance for us, but a civil exchange would suffice. To the two girls who served us, you know exactly who you are: if you do not have the human decency to behave in a civil manner I'd suggest you find new employment where you don't interact with anyone. (Tip: that wouldn't be law enforcement since these guys help & protect EVERYONE they're called to serve- even if it were you two cold and disrespectful young women.) read more

Located under the vintage Georgetown sign on Wisconsin Ave, this Compass Coffee seems bigger than most of the other DC locations. The space is open and airy with lots of tables and outlets. Depending on how loud it'll get in here, this can be a great place to get some work done with a cup of joe. Speaking of coffee, you will not go wrong with the nitro cold brew. My favorite coffee shop in Georgetown. The cortado and oat milk latte are great as well as their seasonal drinks (I'm a big fan of the gingerbread latte, peppermint mocha, and maple latte). I'm originally from New England so I lovvve iced coffee, and their cold brew is the most delicious I've had in recent memory. And, the space is gorgeous, very easy to study in, and the prices are comparable to a lot of nearby places. A new favorite! My daughter is a budding coffee connaisseuse and she said this was the best cold brew ever. My cappuccino was robust with the perfect crema - and a lovely fern design that added an artistic touch. Friendly staff and a cool physical location. We were there yesterday and there was no inside seating permitted during this phase of the pandemic, but they have a large space with lots of comfortable seating. I came here in desperate need of coffee after traveling here from Houston. I got the nitro cold brew with oat milk and loved it. The coffee was so smooth and creamy. The oat milk was something different, but pretty good. I think I'll stick to my soymilk or almond milk though. The service was spectacular and the place was so cute. They have a lot of area to sit. Wonderful location and great coffee and baked goods. I got a coconut macaron and an iced latte for $7, very reasonably priced. The macaron was delicious and the latte was also tasty. The environment was great for studying, there was a wide variety of seating options, and many people were there working. There was background music, but it was not distracting at all.
