Wow! I love this place! I am a regular visitor to Pittsburgh as my son is a student at Pitt. My husband and I visited this shop on Sunday for the first time and I was blown away. Hands down best coffee I have ever had in Pittsburgh and there are some really good others. Ordered a decaf cappuccino and it was sublime. My husband ordered the breakfast burrito and I had the breakfast sandwich. They were both tasty, but I must admit I have not stopped thinking about that cup of coffee. I was craving some lavender spiced latte and found this spot on Yelp . Must say their interior decor is very cozy and calm . The latte was smooth and had some of the lavender spice but I think it definitely need a little bit more lavender flavor to it . It was well blended in it with the vanilla flavor . There are so many coffee shops in downtown Squirrel Hill that you might get confused. But don't! Commonplace is the ABSOLUTE BEST! Their coffee is like nothing you've ever tried. You can taste the layers of flavors... like a fine wine. The company roasts it's own beans--sourced from areas all over the world--in East Liberty with a process that removes many of the impurities most other companies just overlook. The result is stellar. As for atmosphere, the shop has a great vibe. The staff are friendly and proud of their product, always willing to help you find your perfect coffee match. The shop itself is clean and has an inviting atmosphere, and they even take Square as a payment service (on your iPhone) which is extremely convenient. Commonplace brings something different to the coffeehouse that I haven't seen elsewhere - cold brewed coffee. For me, that alone was worth checking out. Although I don't have iced coffee often, this was smoother than anything I've had before, with very little bitterness. My wife ordered her usual - a soy latte - which wasn't the best, but decent enough. The soy milk here (they use Silk) is a bit overpowering, but if you like creamy drinks it will likely please you. read more

Cutest little "hipster" coffee shop in Pittsburgh. After our disappointment with Te Che we came here to satisfy the boyfies coffee addiction. He ordered an Americano and I ordered the Chai Latte. Both were good, but mine was a little better :P High quality coffee + great staff. Only downside is that they charge $1 for almond milk... I feel like it's free everywhere in California.. Lovely place on Squirrel Hill. Took my parents here for a quick breakfast to go. I absolutely adored the Lavendar Vanilla Chai/Latte, it had the most subtle scent but it gave it such a delightful taste. Best gourmet coffee I had. The one star off was because a) portions are a teensy bit small and b) for the portions, its a tad expensive. But the latte was so good, it was worth it. Commonplace serves my favorite coffee in Pittsburgh. They have a great and changing rotation of coffees and teas and it's clear they care deeply about the business AND art of coffee-brewing. They really take their time with the brewing process, run a very clean shop, and are super-informed about all of their menu options. They'll warn you that the larger cappuccino size has four (four!) shots of espresso, but holy Jesus, it's worth it. The baristas are always polite, but it's not a super-friendly vibe. I am over the moon that the Commonplace has found a home in Pittsburgh!! As an IUP grad student I was lucky enough to have the "original" Commonplace right next door to my office buidling. I grew to love and appreciate their dedication to good coffee (and I am the nothing clost to being a coffee snob) and I have missed them since leaving Indiana in 2006. They have a great open space in Squirrel Hill and their staff are still as friendly as I remember. They have something for everyone: chocolate milk for the kids, tea for the non-coffee drinkers, coffee brewed by the cup, lattes, esspresso and freshly baked treats (get their early, they go fast) from a local bakery. Since we're a family of carpetbaggers who have transplanted themselves from the Bay Area to Pittsburgh....id like to say that even if we are only two months new...this place has been a go-to since the moving truck pulled up... It wasn't our first time here, we've been to commonplace before, last summer, when we were scouting out the area and planning our take over but that's a mute point, really... Anywho, they make really good coffee, even of the decaf kind. The staff are friendly, even pleasant I'd say... I do wish they enforced a bring your own mug discount...and I also wish I could cover up the "under surveillance" sign on the front door with anything, a picture of a kitten or a honey badger... It's understandable to have cameras, sure but something about that sign is off putting for a place where you are by culture, encouraged to hang and get cozy. Me, I try to pretend the sign says something else since ignoring it didn't work...I pretend it says, soothing things not things that make me think that Georgie Orwell really was on to something and that it's only s matter of time before big brother comes for me and my family or worry that a crew of gun people will storm the doors and shoot the place up because I mean why else do U have to make it a point to announce and make known that you are indeed being watched?? Commonplace Coffee had been on my "bookmarked" list for a long time, and I finally came here with my husband within the last six months. He was in desperate need of some coffee, so we found an in-high-demand parallel parking spot right out front on a Sunday afternoon. The shop was bustling, and I quickly grabbed the last available table as soon as we ordered. More smaller two seater tables could actually help out Commonplace as I noticed the majority of four person tables were taken up by individuals using a laptop or reading a book. I ordered a latte, and enjoyed the simplicity, quality, and perfection of the beverage, which was on par with beverages that I have tried in NYC coffee shops such as Intelligentsia and Blue Bottle. read more

I recently went to The Commonplace Coffee House and had a very unpleasant experience with the current manager where he abused his power. I have been getting my coffee there for years spending 80 dollars and more each time I go. I asked they not slice open the colored label so I could use it to keep it closed. I was given an argument by the new manager about why it couldn't be done when I've never had an issue with over the years I've purchased coffee. I stated I don't want to argue and to please grind the coffee course. He started to continue to argue with me and when he was done grinding the coffee he stated, "you are not welcome here again" I am shocked by his comment and threat. Then I got a call on my business cell that I believe was him. I'm appalled by his behavior and am asking he learn and be trained to treat customers with respect. I never want to hurt someone with being fired. I love the coffee here but the manager needs to learn to not abuse his title. read more

Let me start by commending the staff; I tried out Commonplace Coffee at 10 AM on a Saturday - prime time for coffee shops. The staff (two younger ladies) was extremely friendly and professional, despite the high volume of the shop and the looonnngg line of people wanting coffee. They even took time to be friendly with the little kiddos in line, and all at the same time were prompt, quick, and correct with orders. I even noticed them knowing regulars orders - very impressive! They also somehow managed to keep the shop incredibly clean. This is a nice coffee shop for families - and just that. I arrived hoping for a nice atmosphere to sit and read and enjoy a latte, but it seemed Commonplace was more suited for families of the area. A few screaming kids made it a bit noisy, especially since it is fairly relatively small in there. It was a bit cramped, with me having to tip toe around customers and say "excuse me" several times when trying to get to and from my seat. Finally, I was lucky to find a table easily, but I did notice few people walk in and immediately walk out due to either the long line or the unavailability of seats. All in all, nice shop, GREAT staff, just small and noisy. Not a reading nook but a good place for families! read more

Lavender vanilla latte - haven't seen it anywhere else and it was just as good as I imagined. If you're looking for the pretty latte art in a mug, make sure you indicate you're getting the coffee "for here" - I did see signs saying "no to go", but my friend ended up with a paper cup and was sad she didn't get a real mug. We overstayed our welcome though - apparently in the winter they close at 9pm, not 9:30 per google or 10:00 per yelp. A nice alternative to the Starbucks 2 blocks down. read more

Well we certainly have a plethora of coffeehouses here in Squirrel Hill and I'm' surprised I haven't reviewed this one yet. Commonplace took over from the old Arefa's Espresso a few years ago. The place seems inviting enough, though not as comfortable as the nearby 61C. But they really are trying to build a community atmosphere here. .I tried the Building New Hope Nicaraguan El Porveir and found it to be a really smooth blend. read more

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite coffee shops in Pittsburgh. Comfortable and friendly place to spend an afternoon. I haven't met a latte here I didn't like, and as Adam K. wrote adding a flavor to your drink is a great idea. Also, their mochas are definitely worth a try: rich, and just sweet enough. Drinks are moderately priced as compared to what you might pay elsewhere. As Alexis B. wrote, you might not get as large a portion for your money as you'd like, but the quality makes it well worth a weekly trip in my book. That being said, my mug is almost always filled to the brim -- appreciated, but getting back to your seat without spilling requires a bit of finagling, especially with a line of customers to navigate around. It's a shame to mess up the latte art, too! On that note, a word about the staff: very friendly and always ready to clarify your questions or to make a suggestion. I remember one experience in particular, when a barista spilled a bit of my mocha as he was making it. Considering that we had been talking while he was working and that the mug was essentially full, I didn't mind all that much, but after I'd sat down he brought be a complimentary refill. I'd call that pretty decent customer service. This place has almost always been pretty full when I've been there, and I wouldn't say its for cramped space or a lack of seats either. On the other hand one of the small niceties that first attracted me to commonplace was the fact that the name isn't just that -- customers are subtly encouraged to get acquainted with one another. To the far left side of the bar next to the "share a table, I dare you" sign are a couple placards ("table share is go", for example) that add a nice touch. I like having my own island in a public space as much as the next person, but for me the placards are an opening to conversations with some fellow patrons. read more

Neat little joint. We always stop for a bag of beans when we're in Squirrel Hill. Btw, you get a free small coffee when you get a bag, which is super cool. The place has a feel of an "authentic" coffee shop, if that's even a thing. Its usual pretty quiet in the place, so getting study or reading done while there would be easy. There's no annoying, in-your-face art plastered all over the walls, and everything is pretty chill. Almost bordering on too chill - LOL! I like the cool chalk diagram behind the counter. I can't tell you exactly what it is, but its definitely coffee related. This is a place you can come to learn all things coffee. Although we've only ever asked the barista/o about the beans we've bought, it seems like they'd probably be knowledgeable about coffee, how to brew it, etc. Although we've never had a chance to hang here, I would definitely do so if I lived in the neighborhood.
