    Welcome!

Such a cozy restaurant in my favorite part of town! The food is appetizing and coffee served hot. The service is a little slow but it makes sense since most of the customers are there to sit and talk and are in no rush at all.

Stopped by for a quick lunch. I ordered the chunky chicken salad salad. The poppy seed dressing went really well with the salad.

I am updating my review from 2017. A lot has happened since then. The pandemic hit and took its toll on the restaurant and staff. Kai Yee Chin, (co-owner of Common Grounds with his wife, Gaye), - passed from this life on November 13, 2023 after a very long illness. His family's decision to continue to serve at Common Grounds, in accord with his wishes, is a celebration of Kai's life and life's work, with his wife and family. Changes have been made in scheduling to accommodate post Covid realties, but there is a new joy there now that Kai is at peace. Please come if you've not been here in awhile or have never been to Common Grounds. Note the new hours and try the new specials on Wednesday night which include BBQ smoked brisket, ribs and/or sausage with macaroni, potatoes salad or smothered cabbage sides. All other menu items and specials are still available. Be sure to look at the Christmas decorations included with this review. The joy in moving forward is contagious.

This establishment has been here quite a while in Gretna and from the look of the clientele, they really like this corner restaurant. I ordered a whole lot after running the Crescent City Classic, food was brought up as fast as they could. I noticed that they did not have a lot of waitress on staff when it was super busy, but I am not one to complain. Food was fine, did what it was supposed to do. I will say the coffee was great, hope it was French Truck Coffee. Sooo good.

I'm giving Common Grounds a 4-star overall review, since I come here really often and enjoy it. But if I Was only rating this particular visit it would be 3-stars instead. I usually come for lunch on Fridays or Breakfast/lunch on Saturdays. It can be crowded at times, but Sunday's it seems to be so packed that it affects the meal. Usually, the eggs, seafood, sandwiches- are all great. Today I got a cup of gumbo and eggs Benedict. The gumbo was delicious as always. The eggs in the Benedict were quite overlooked- so much so that the yolks were like hard boiled eggs. We waited over 40'minutes for the food, so I def didn't want to send it back. And the poor waitresses looked super stressed just rushing all around. I know I'll be back because I like this place, but I prob wing go on Sunday's anymore!

Once again we find ourselves walking in Old Gretna, soaking up the sunshine. "Let's sit for a minute." Common Ground to the rescue! Iced coffee, hot coffee, sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts... And the sweetest employees, man. The Common Ground staff has always (like always, as in "I've been a patron for nearly twenty years") made us feel like family.

The breakfast is ALWAYS homemade and hot. The common breakfast is the way to go. Two large eggs, grits, hash browns, toast and choice of meat. All the ladies that work there are awesome beautiful wonderful people. We try to make it every Saturday morning.

The drink was $7.14 which isn't too bad, but the taste is great. It's very refreshing and not heavy at all. I came on a Sunday morning and the inside was a little busy, so I decided to sit outside. They have maybe 4 tables outside with music playing so it was quite nice. One more thing -- i really like the cup lid. Sometimes you'll go to a place and the lid makes it really hard to get an even stir/shake but with their lid it's so easy as you just plug the top with a finger and shake. Small detail but it's something I appreciated. The matcha coconut water is a must try!

Dough Nguyener's Bakery -- 4…read more Dough Nguyener's really introduced me and my son to the flavors of ube and pandan... and I still can't believe I went my whole life without them. Like where have I been?! We are forever grateful for that alone. As someone who already loves Vietnamese culture through food here in New Orleans, this place just hits. Vietnamese coffee is a staple for me--not even for energy, but for the flavor. If you know, you know... that bold, strong, chicory-meets-condensed-milk moment. It's rich, it's cultural, it's intentional. And when you start adding things like pandan cold foam? Simple, but it speaks volumes about the influence and beauty of the Vietnamese community here. I respect it, deeply. Now let's talk about that Croffle... a croissant-waffle situation. I went with the Chantilly and berries because... you already know, I'm gonna choose what feels like home every time. The cream was smooth, the fruit was fresh, everything worked. My only thing--personally--it was a little heavy on the almonds for me. Still good, just my preference. We also had The American--eggs, bacon, French ham, hand-cut fries, garlic aioli, and a baguette. I shared it with my son and made my own little sandwich moment with it. Used the aioli as a base, layered the eggs, bacon, and ham... and I feel like that's exactly what it was meant for. Solid, simple, and filling. I've tried a few other things too like the bánh mì and donuts. The bánh mì was good, donuts were okay... not my go-to for that. But that frozen cocktail? Listen... it was TOO good. Took it to a festival with me and between that drink and that sun, I slept the whole festival away lol. Overall, I'll definitely be back. I still want to try more from the kitchen--especially that chicken everybody keeps talking about. This is a great spot for early weekend brunch, late evening studying, or weekday coffee runs. Not too small, not too big. Beautiful lighting. A really good addition to Gretna.

The Vintage - New Orleans, LA…read more The Vintage on Magazine Street was our very first food stop in New Orleans, and it turned out to be a great way for my wife and me to start our trip. From the moment we walked in, I really liked the atmosphere. The place has a cool, relaxed New Orleans vibe with a little bit of an upscale café feel without being overly fancy. It's the kind of spot where you can come in, sit down, enjoy some good food and drinks, and just take your time. Of course, we couldn't come to New Orleans and not start things off with beignets! We decided to go with the Fancy Beignet Flight, which gave us a chance to try several different flavors. We got the raspberry, s'mores, and Chantilly. They came out looking almost too good to eat, covered in powdered sugar with all the different fillings and toppings. Almost... because we definitely ate them! They were warm, sweet, messy in the best possible way, and a fun introduction to our New Orleans food adventure. For my meal, I ordered the Italian Panini with the truffle Parmesan fries. The sandwich was packed with meat, cheese, and flavor. Looking at that cross-section, they definitely weren't being stingy with the fillings! The bread was toasted nicely, and everything worked well together. The truffle fries were another highlight. They had plenty of seasoning and Parmesan and paired perfectly with the sandwich. I also grabbed a small iced mocha, which went really well with the food and especially the beignets. One thing I really enjoyed about The Vintage was the atmosphere. The interior has a lot of character, from the marble tables and vintage-style flooring to the bar and pastry display. It feels like a place that belongs on Magazine Street. It was comfortable enough that we didn't feel rushed and could just enjoy being in New Orleans together. The service was good during our visit, and everything came together for a really enjoyable first meal in the city. Our bill came to around $48 after tax and tip for the two of us, and considering we had a sandwich, upgraded fries, drinks, and the beignet flight, I thought it was a good experience for the money. Most importantly, this place gave my wife and me a great start to our New Orleans trip. When your first stop includes a loaded Italian panini, truffle Parmesan fries, iced coffee, and a whole flight of beignets, you know the trip is starting off right! Definitely a place I would visit again. Great food, great atmosphere, and a great first taste of New Orleans. 5 stars from us!

Still a New Orleans Gem - Visitor since 2018!…read more I'm updating my review as of April 2026 because it's important for visitors to know that The Vintage has absolutely "still got it." My last review was in 2020, and I'm happy to report that the quality and atmosphere remain top notch. Whether you are looking for a morning pick up or an evening wind-down, this spot covers all the bases. Their beignets and coffee are a classic must have, and I can personally vouch for their Americano. It is consistently well made and delicious. They also have a great selection of beer and cocktails if you're looking for something a bit stronger. What really sets this place apart, though, is the hospitality. We have always had great interactions with the staff, but a special shout out goes to Jimmy, whom we met this past week. He was incredibly kind and hospitable, truly making us feel right at home. Jimmy if you are reading this, THANK YOU!! If you want a spot that feels authentic, welcoming, and consistently excellent, put The Vintage at the top of your list!
