Definitely a local place where you find a lot of regulars around. The service was good, as expected for a restaurant in Old Gretna and a good place to go during your lunch hour or on a Sunday afternoon. The food was decent, not amazing or something to rave over but for the price you're paying, you can't ask for too much more. We went on a Sunday during the lunch time rush and it was pretty busy so our food took a little while to come out. I got the Common Slam breakfast and while the scrambled eggs weren't that great, the mini pancakes and grits (with butter) were delicious. I am updating my review from 2017. A lot has happened since then. The pandemic hit and took its toll on the restaurant and staff. Kai Yee Chin, (co-owner of Common Grounds with his wife, Gaye), - passed from this life on November 13, 2023 after a very long illness. His family's decision to continue to serve at Common Grounds, in accord with his wishes, is a celebration of Kai's life and life's work, with his wife and family. Changes have been made in scheduling to accommodate post Covid realties, but there is a new joy there now that Kai is at peace. Please come if you've not been here in awhile or have never been to Common Grounds. Note the new hours and try the new specials on Wednesday night which include BBQ smoked brisket, ribs and/or sausage with macaroni, potatoes salad or smothered cabbage sides. All other menu items and specials are still available. Be sure to look at the Christmas decorations included with this review. The joy in moving forward is contagious. read more

This establishment has been here quite a while in Gretna and from the look of the clientele, they really like this corner restaurant. I ordered a whole lot after running the Crescent City Classic, food was brought up as fast as they could. I noticed that they did not have a lot of waitress on staff when it was super busy, but I am not one to complain. Food was fine, did what it was supposed to do. I will say the coffee was great, hope it was French Truck Coffee. Sooo good. read more

I'm giving Common Grounds a 4-star overall review, since I come here really often and enjoy it. But if I Was only rating this particular visit it would be 3-stars instead. I usually come for lunch on Fridays or Breakfast/lunch on Saturdays. It can be crowded at times, but Sunday's it seems to be so packed that it affects the meal. Usually, the eggs, seafood, sandwiches- are all great. Today I got a cup of gumbo and eggs Benedict. The gumbo was delicious as always. The eggs in the Benedict were quite overlooked- so much so that the yolks were like hard boiled eggs. We waited over 40'minutes for the food, so I def didn't want to send it back. And the poor waitresses looked super stressed just rushing all around. I know I'll be back because I like this place, but I prob wing go on Sunday's anymore! read more

Cute, cafe-like restaurant in a cute neighborhood with delicious simple food. I ordered the crabcake benedict which was savory and filling. I'd definitely order it again. Great place for breakfast. Service was very friendly and quick. Blueberry pancakes and eggs Benedict were both great. Highly recommended.

The good thing is my cafe au latte was good. Bad part is she over charged me and even after I pointed it out didn't change the price. Unacceptable to me. A large cafe au latte is $3.50 I had $4 cash on me and she charged me $3.95 before tax. Dishonesty like this is why I double checked the menu and took the receipt before leaving. I suggest you check your receipts before paying also. Receipt clearly shows she put in the price manually and charged what ever she wanted. Bad business. Common Grounds is a good, casual restaurant in Old Gretna. Old Gretna is one of my favorite areas on the westbank. Besides the cool architecture, there are many cool restaurants and businesses. Common Grounds is one of those places. With the perfect location on the corner of Huey P. Long Avenue, there is a nice patio where old men sit, smoke, talk and watch the cars drive by. Some of these guys are very interesting. On my most recent trip I was stopped by one on my way in, and we ended up talking for a half hour. The restaurant is mainly one large room. It can get very crowded during the lunch rush, so I recommend coming at an off time. We came around 1:00 p.m. and had no problem being seated. Service was very friendly. While I am not a regular, the waitress treated me as if I were her best customer. Our table had a cheeseburger poor boy, a steak and a seafood platter. All of the food was reasonably priced and quite tasty. I really like Common Ground. After reading the reviews, I need to come visit for breakfast, but regardless of when I come, I will definitely come back. read more

Waitress took FOREVER to get us our drinks, then FOREVER to take our order, then FOREVER to bring our food, then FOREVER to bring us the check. We spent over 2 hours here. And it wasn't anything major. 3 of us got the crab cake Benedict. Delicious. Very filling. My other friend got the regular eggs Benedict and my boyfriend got the bayou omelet. Everything was good. Side pancakes are huge. Coffee is strong. Only thing upsetting about food was the hash browns. Soggy and too greasy. We won't be coming back. But really good food. read more

Coffee was sad and not even hot. Not a fancy coffee, but the basic black kind. Pancakes rubbery. Crab cakes overcooked & dry. More cake than crab, which is always a disappointment . Solid (this is my adjective of the month, I guess) diner type spot. I did not have the coffee since I don't drink the stuff but the iced tea was good and the breakfasts were all really tasty. Will never go back, the service was like something from the "PAST". Which consisted of being ignored by the cashier as she talked to a coworker that was on my side of the counter for over 3 mins. about nothing, even with me making constant eye contact and I was the only Customer. There was no greeting or smile that was not going to happen. Placed coffee order and it tasted worst then something from a gas station. Even with the paying of the bill she took my card placed it and the receipt on the counter with pen for me to sign and waked away from me like I was invisible, and stood at the other end of the long counter till I left, still not saying a word to me. Cute place, nice table service, and seriously the worst breakfast I've ever eaten. How? Why? A biscuit that tasted like a mouthful of gooey lard, strange curls of greasy bacon fat, scrambled egg part over cooked, part raw, undercooked, wet potato mush. This place is about a 3 minute walk from my house. I love that they have outdoor seating and you can even bring your dog when you eat outside! The restraunt has really high ceilings and as a result feels open and airy. It is also right next to the train tracks which is kind of cool because you can watch the trains pass from inside. I was told that years ago the train conductor used to stop the train here very briefly to get off to use the bathroom and grab a sandwich that was ready and waiting for him from Common Ground. Speaking of their sandwiches.... they are incredibly good! They have the option of doing a whole sandwich or a combo where you get 1/2 sandwich with a cup of soup. They have a ton of great choices that come with fries (which can be upgraded to sweet potato fried for a small fee). Last time I went with a colleague I ordered the Fazzi's BBQ sandwich that came with fries. The sandwich was grilled chicken breast topped with BBQ sauce, bacon, jack cheese, on a delicious bun. My colleague got a combo, 1/2 of a chunky chicken salad sandwich with a cup of gumbo which she really enjoyed. The staff are extremely friendly and take excellent care of everyone. The reason I'm giving this place two stars and not one is because our waitress was lovely and the iced coffee I had was pretty good. We will most likely never come back. I met a friend for breakfast on the West Bank and she suggested here. It's a large, informal but nicely setup place that looks like a large coffee shop. The waitress was super nice. My friend said they are known for simple and basic food, so we ordered breakfast plates. Hers had hash browns, eggs of choice, meat of choice(bacon), toast while mine had pancakes. All were good but the pancakes were my favorite. My friend said they do have homemade cake which is a bit above the ordinary fare (not complaining as sometimes simple is best). We ordered a piece of cake and it was very good. A great breakfast place with room for a crowd. read more
