I'm visiting my sister for my birthday today, cinco de mayo, I wanted shrimp and grits so I just found the closest place that had them. My sister had never heard of this place but I noticed they have excellent reviews so I wanted to give them a chance. This place is like in a little strip mall, not too difficult to find. I went inside and ordered the shrimp and grits to go. The price was good just $17 and it comes with a salad. I waited about 7 minutes and my food was ready. I didn't open it till I got home and just looking at it I knew it was going to be good. The sauce looked great. I tasted it and golly g it was sooo good, the best shrimp and grits I've ever had. By the way the grits have corn in it. It was amazing, my sister tasted it and agreed it was the best we've ever tasted. I want to taste more food from there but I'm going back to Texas. Real comfort food. Whenever I eat out, I ask what is made in - house so I can order the best possible meal. Gus' meatloaf - I grew up eating meatloaf and I was in the mood for "homey-mommy" food. It was very good, like good homemade meatloaf. Two thick slices. I eat my meatloaf with ketchup, so I made a little ketchup pool on the side of my plate and dipped meatloaf bites as I ate. I also love meatloaf sandwiches and I bet this meatloaf, served cold, would be good on sliced sandwich bread. Sides- Mac n cheese- tasty, creamy béchamel-based, mildly cheesy sauce. Sauce was poured over the pasta. The pasta was penne not macaroni. Sauce was good, but I would have preferred a sharper cheese for some tang. Also, the mac n cheese was served lukewarm, not hot like it should be. Red beans -n-rice- tasty, well- cooked beans, smokey , meaty pork chunks, nicely seasoned. They even left Bay leaves in the beans. Love that. Cornbread- moist, sweet, fluffy, nice texture. Very good. NY style Cheesecake- i love cheesecake but i was not a fan of theirs. Its texture was grainy, not creamy/smooth. It lacked flavor and tang. Crust was bland. Overall, it lacked brightness. It was served with chocolate sauce that tasted like Hershey's syrup from a bottle. Definitely would not order that dessert again. Arrived for an early dinner at 5p. I was greeted when I walked in, staff is friendly, staff is knowledgeable about the menu and how things are prepared. Service was prompt and staff checked in regularly after serving. Business was steady with lots of takeout orders, and regulars dining in. This place needs a good scrub down on the interiorpp. It's looking neglected. Also the floors in the restaurant and bathrooms are very dirty and really need a good scrub. I give it four out of five stars because of the dirty floors and grainy cheesecake. I decided on this little spot for lunch after finding it here on Yelp. I called my order in a head speaking to someone who was super polite and helpful on the phone. I was told it'd be about 15 minutes and it took me about that long to get there so when I arrived, my order was indeed ready. They accept Apple Pay which is always a plus for me. The inside was tidy. The bathroom was clean and stocked. Okay, now...the food. Lol I ordered the crispy chicken Alfredo, it isn't shown on the menu but is definitely an option. My food was hot and fresh. I'm an extra saucy pasta person so it could've used a tad more sauce for me and a little more salt but these are both personal preferences. Found this place through the reviews in Yelp so I stopped in when I was on the West Bank. This simple little family owned place was an amazing bargain in this horrible economy. I got the catfish dinner which was one of the specials, and gumbo. Wow!! I'm both a gumbo and iced tea snob and theirs was some of the best I've had since pre-plandemic. Never had shrimp entouffee but I certainly enjoyed every flavorful bite. Fried chicken with gravy was flavorful and tasty. Paired with fried okra and corn grits. Both sides were solid as well although I feel like the fried okra could use a bit more seasoning and could do without the corn kernels in the grits. I've been trying to cut back on eating out, but still supporting local businesses during these times. I ordered food for delivery tonight and it fits the name, home cooking! When the food got to me, it was still hot and they worked to get the order ready quickly. We tried the amazing ravioli, captains meatloaf, and sandys Cajun pasta. For sides we had corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, broccoli, and red beans and rice. The amazing ravioli came with 4 and a side of red sauce and they were good! It has portobello mushrooms, chicken, and ricotta cheese. They were fried crispy and I loved the red sauce! I had the pasta and it had sausage, shrimp, mushrooms in a cream sauce. I love pasta and this didn't disappoint! I do like my pasta a tad more spicy, but that's an easy fix for me and not everyone can handle spice so that's understandable. The pasta was cooked nicely and not too soft or undercooked. The meatloaf came with gravy on the side and it was good, except the edges were hard and a bit over cooked. The middle though, was moist and not under seasoned like some I've had before. The corn and mashed potatoes were the usual you'd expect and it's hard to mess up fairly easy side dishes. The red beans and rice were okay, wish it had a bit more flavor and the broccoli was a tad too soft for me.
