IF YOU ARE THINKING OF USING THEM PLEASE READ THIS.
Sorry this is so long, but I have moved 8 times over a 20 year period and this was the worst experience I have ever had. So many things were done incorrectly, I'll list them:
1. They didn't bring enough blankets to adequately cover the furniture, as a result they chipped off a 1/2 piece of wood from one of my living room chairs, as well as seriously scratched the dining room table and a antique blanket chest. I guess the fact that they had insufficient blankets also explains why they put an antique table into a large box with no wrapping.
2. They did not bring the proper packing materials for the TV and stereo, even though I had told the estimator I wanted them to pack them and he replied they would bring the material required.
3. They didn't bring any packing material so they tore up the boxes I'd paid for at Home Depot, and used them.
4. I had explicitly asked that they pack an antique mirror and framed fan. As I was driving away to meet them at the new location, I saw one of the movers get into the passenger seat of the van with the mirror completely uncovered. He just carried it on his lap. They completely forgot about the antique fan - it was still on the wall when I returned the next day to clean up.
5. They also left some items in the garage, which I had pointed out to them when they first arrived. Some items were very large so I couldn't move them in my car.
6. Even though I showed them all the places outside the house that needed to be packed - the garage, yard, storage shed and under the house, they said they were ready to leave without even touching the items in the yard and under the house.
When they arrived at the new location, the mistakes continued.
7. I had marked all the boxes with abbreviations of the rooms where they should be unloaded. I also walked them through the house and pointed out which boxes went into which rooms. They continually unloaded boxes into the wrong rooms. It seems they just dumped boxes anywhere How else to explain that those marked for my bedroom landed in the living room, those marked for my sons bedroom landed in my room, kitchen boxes were left in the living room and several of those marked Garage landed in my bedroom, the living room and a third bedroom.
8. Even though I'd told them which beds went into which rooms, they couldn't figure out which bedframes went with which beds. Most movers mark the bedframes with the bedroom they came from. The guy was seriously stymied. I finally had to explain that since there were 2 queens and 1 double, he could put the frames together and the odd one out would be the double, and the other two would be the queens.
9. They unloaded 2 cabinets into the house, but left the shelves in the garage. Shelves weren't wrapped and weren't marked with which piece they went with. Any time I've moved any furniture taken apart is put back together by the movers.
10. I had metal shelving units for the garage, and again they didn't mark the shelves so when they put the shelves in, the top shelf of one of the units didn't fit correctly and was slanted. I couldn't have them put anything on the shelf, until it was fixed. But they left without fixing it.
11. They managed to break one of the metal handles (not break the handle off, but actually break the metal ) on an heirloom desk built by hand. They just put the pieces in a drawer and did not tell me about it.
12. This move was from Oakland to Burlingame and even though there were 4 guys, they took at around 9 hours. When I moved from SF to Oakland 2 years prior, there were 3 guys and they finished in 6 hours and nothing was damaged.
When I spoke to the manager, his explanation for why it went so badly, was that they had overbooked that day, and they didn't have enough experienced movers. My response was, if they know they don't have the resources to do a job properly, don't do it.
Although, I did negotiate a reduced rate for all the hassle, they did not pay to have the furniture repaired, because I didn't buy the extra insurance. When the estimator came out and we went over the contract, he did not even mention it. Even if he had, I may not have taken it, after all how much can go wrong on a 35 mile move? read more
