We chose Ontrack after reading great reviews as to their navigation of the (sometimes harrowing) Oakland Hills. What I encountered was end-to-end excellence, from customer service to their excellent moving team. I knew our move would be a large one, so I booked a 26' truck and five-person crew. As the day of the move approached, I had lots of last-minute worries and questions and Sam, in Customer Service, answered every one and generally calmed my nerves, assuring me my move team would assist if we needed last-minute help. On the day of the move, the team arrived right on time. The foreman, Guillermo, assessed our situation and calmly confirmed my suspicious that we'd need two trucks (this my error, not OnTrack's). Before I could panic, he had contacted his team and we arranged that ours be a two day move. Guillermo's team wrapped our furniture and had the truck loaded swiftly. At the new house, we had a few of our family help direct traffic. I'd labelled every box with a color-coded room label and the team got everything to the proper room. On day two, Sammy -- part of the original crew -- acted as lead and we repeated the process. Here, a number of items still needed a bit of packing and his team had everything done in record time and -- bless them - marked the boxes for the proper room destinations without prompting. As I now unpack, I'm finding everything in excellent condition and couldn't be more grateful. We'd heard stories about moving nightmares and wanted to share a happy ending. Guillermo and Sammy were AMAZING and their crews were very hard working. Tips: my sister had a table of bottled waters, bags of chips, and other snacks ready for the team when we arrived at the new house. The team appeared grateful for the sustenance. Some bumpiness showed up at the move-in: - They'd packed a number of liquid cleaners in a box without labeling which direction was up: it arrived upside down and was the bottom box of a pile. It took some moving and excavating to figure out why something in it was leaking - Despite labeling many of the boxes I'd packed, and having papers strewn around the new place diagramming what went where, and a friend guiding them, many boxes ended up and a couple smaller pieces of furniture ended up in the wrong locations - My solid wood desk arrived with extra damage in the form of extra scratches and a chunk of wood being lost from near one of its four feet. If I were to do it again, I would try to have all the packing done the night before the move. I suspect these errors were a result of exhaustion; splitting the work between two days might have prevented these issues read more

I rarely leave reviews, but when a company goes over the top, I do it! I called several moving companies, and they all went to long phone trees and I thought to myself, "if anything goes wrong I do not want to wait on hold this long," and then I called Ontrack and very quickly someone answered. She was helpful and got us setup for a walk-thru. I even called back a second time the next day to ask a question and it was the same lady (and same great customer service). When they came for the walk thru they were professional, making notes, and asked pertinent questions to help make the move go smooth. They saw us packing and offered to send packers if we didn't finish the day before our move, which I appreciated. On the day of the move, they texted on their way, they arrived right on time with 3 full trucks and a team of 8 movers. The team foreman Leo was superb! He took the entire team with us on the tour of what was going and what was staying and took the time to make sure the whole team understood. And then they started loading the trucks. They were extremely fast, in 4 hours they had loaded all 3 trucks completely. When we got to our destination, they unloaded them in even less time. All items coming in they wanted to ensure went to the correct rooms. They had good attitudes and seemed eager to make sure everything was where it belonged. They reassembled furniture and double checked locations of beds etc. Their priority was to make sure everything was where it needed to be. I liked that the crew was given breaks throughout the day (btw very short but enough for them to hydrate and snack), and it was clear (think: pleases and thank yous and smiling) that the foreman respected his crew and that they respected him. They all genuinely seemed to be enjoying their jobs. They were sure to cleanup and packaging material as they went. After the move was done the foreman did a full walk thru to make sure we were happy with everything. We had one box that accidentally didn't make it off the truck (since it looked like garbage bags, our fault) and we didn't realize it until after the crew had left. And this is how you know how amazing this company is... I called the after hours number, their rep Leo (a different Leo) called me back and insured me he would personally double check the trucks in the morning when the cleanup crew arrived), he then found the missing item and offered to deliver it back to us. We are so grateful for the care this company takes in moving families! We will definitely be using on track for our next move! read more

Understaffed and designed to overcharge. The guys were nice, that's the only reason this isn't a one star. I had a very small move including: 52" flat screen 42" flat screen Standard 5 drawer dresser, approx 6ft 5 seater sofa (breaks down into 2 sections) Coffee Table Desk (very light) Standard rolling office chair California King sleep number bed 6 hours. Both buildings with elevators, both less than 15 feet walking from elevator to truck/truck to elevator. 6 hours. They allocated 2 men for the job, which based on the inventory I could find a way to understand. But this was almost the equivalent of a fully furnished 2 bedroom home. 6 hours and not providing any form of concession is absurd. And nice gentlemen, but this wasn't exactly white glove service. Half of the items they didn't even ask where I wanted them placed or oriented. And they tracked over my brand new rug multiple times no booties even though I was adamant about that before the move began. Used a slow, manual hand wrench to try and take a flat screen TV mount off. Maybe power tools would have been better/faster? Didn't have a door stopper... maybe a moving company has a few of those handy for jobs? 6 hours. Would not recommend, wish I could do this over. 6 hours. read more

Ontrack showed up on time and ready to work but just a few hours in I was informed that my items wouldn't fit and they needed another truck, increasing my costs by 30% - $2,000. At that point what could I do? I also saw them opening my dressers to throw items into a box. I was told by the estimator that clothing or blankets could stay in furniture but even a small cabinet with kids bathing suits was dumped into a box along with the drawer liners. All drawers from a dresser with socks, folded kids pants and shirts all tossed in a mess in a box. No wonder they needed another truck after making another 50 boxes. They unloaded with all the boxes stacked 5 high in the garage and Christmas decorations, the first boxes they loaded but the last to come off the truck, stacked in my new living room. They assembled beds but left TVs still boxed. It was a long day. I moved 3 hours away and think it may have been too much, too big, too far for them. For a small move, a studio or 1 bedroom, maybe. Tired of movers who under bid, creat more partially full boxes, tell you they'll hang clothes and set up TVs but don't, then charge so much more. read more

We were moving the contents of a storage unit from one city to another. The contents had been arranged meticulously to allow easy access to more frequently used items, and to "bury" long-term storage items. Nelso and his crew of three arrived promptly on the morning of the move. They had the 10'x15' unit emptied within 90 minutes, and then they were off on the almost 4-hour drive to the new unit with just Nelso and one crew member. The hard part was going to be putting everything back in what would be a usable arrangement. I realized when they started unloading in 100°F heat that I wouldn't be able to direct them in sufficient detail in the time allotted. So I worked beside them to arrange things in the unit. They stayed, offering to help and after the truck was completely unloaded. They continued to pitch-in as I organized and rearranged items. But they had already finished the job we agreed to, and so I concluded our business. Everything arrived and without any apparent damage. Ontrack Moving made what could've been a stressful day completely smooth and worry-free. I was behind on packing and had so much left to do last minute, but the team of Tony, Cesar, Jonathan, and Andres absolutely saved the day. They arrived right on time and immediately got to work. Within minutes, they were unloading and organizing everything. They packed up my entire garage and all the random items with ease. We had a three-floor walk-up, multiple TVs, an L-shaped couch, a queen bed, and tons of bins and furniture, and they handled it all like pros. Everything was disassembled and reassembled perfectly. The team was hardworking, professional, and incredibly courteous the entire time. I usually don't do reviews but, let's start at the beginning, it's a long one but I want to make sure I give the business its due. I required moving services on short notice so I decided to go through Yelp's project feature. Ontrack Moving & Storage was the first the reach out so I decided to give them a call. Carmina was very helpful and accommodating to my request (the time between the initial contact and move was literally three days) and was able to schedule me for the time and date I wanted. Come the day of the move Johnathon and Andres were there at the first location right on the scheduled time. They packed and moved everything to the new location in about 4.5 hours. Now the new location was challenging due to it being down a narrow driveway and up a narrow flight of stairs, but they both remained very courteous and polite throughout and handled the whole process professionally. The end price was quite a bit higher than the initial quote but I did use their packing materials and boxes and compared to the time and effort doing it myself (not to mention finding people to help) it was a small price to pay. Hopefully I won't have to move for a long while but if I do, I would gladly use Ontrack again. read more

Good: Very good customer service and booking/confirmation process. Bad: 1. They charge for use of tape and the temporary use of boxes. This seems ticky-tacky and from my experience, others don't charge for this. For example, the movers put a small plastic patio table into a box for the 15-min drive. I was charged $7 for use of that box, and then they kept the box. 2. They aren't particularly efficient. My apartment needed to be accessed via elevator, and they movers took many trips up and down carrying smaller items. Other movers I've worked with in the past have large cardboard-sided crates on wheels that they use to move many smaller items in one elevator trip. We could've easily completed the move in less time. Overall Ontrack still got the job done but didn't wow, I've had better experiences with other moving companies in the area. read more

It was absolutely amazing how quickly and also carefully they packed up all our belongings. The second day they again arrived promptly and quickly moved us from our rental into our forever home. They were so thorough, thoughtful, communicative. They worked to make sure every piece of furniture was where we wanted it, cleaned up the waste. And one of the biggest services they offer is to haul away and recycle furniture you no longer want, we paid to have them do this with a few pieces. It's a flat fee for a certain amount of weight.
