Gave notice of move out date online but didn't call the onsite manager (Graham), which apparently is what you need to do in order to get an adjustment on your bill. I was billed the full month's fee on 16th and move out date was the 19th. No accommodation or adjustment given. Annoyed and disappointed. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth about the company. read more

When I selected Extra Space Storage, I believed their ads that the facility was safe and secure. WRONG! I had two interior storage units at the San Ramon location. Last year, one of the units was broken into, along with two other units on that asile. At the time, i was led to believe that this was a unique occurrence. As it did not appear that anything had been removed, I did not think much of it. However, this past March, my other unit was broken into, but the thieves put on their own lock. When the lock was cut off and the door opened, I found 3/4 of the contents had been removed - over $50,000 worth of valuables. I accidently discovered that three other units had also been burglarized. When I asked about interior cameras, I was informed that it was not typical for self-storage facilities to have interior cameras! Also, in reading the fine print of the contract, the company is not responsible for anything, and the maximum of insurance is $2,000! People tailgate into the facility and then can get into the building without a code or key! IT IS NOT SAFE OR SECURE!!! Further, you end up by paying a lot of money as you wait for your unit to be burglarized!! GO SOMEWHERE TRULY SAFE AND SECURE!!! read more

Graeme is one of the nicest people I've met. We were planning on storing a few items there, but realized too late the unit for us was too small. We called, literally as we were leaving our previous unit, U-haul full, and he said he'd meet up with us when we got there. He helped us talk about what sized unit we would need, and even took us on a little tour of the facility to find the right sized one for us. The facility itself is very clean, quiet and safe, as Graeme even put a security tag on our lock for us when I purchased my lock for the unit there! He made our move super easy and cost-effective. I have had a storage unit here for 3 years. In that time, the price increased 50%. Recently, the manager notified me that my lock (which I purchased from Extra Space) was unlocked and that I should come inspect my unit. The unit was burglarized. The perpetrators broke my lock and left it on the door. I learned that there have been several other thefts at the facility and this seems to happen frequently within the industry. While the facilities look clean and tidy, there are no internal cameras to document visitors once they enter the front gates. I cannot say that this situation is unique to Extra Space San Ramon but want to provide a caveat for all storage customers to beware. read more

This place use to be very good, last several times I rent unit from them, they treat you very well and their service was great. Few days ago I made a reservation online for first floor 5x10 unit and made an appointment to come today. I showed up today and the lady said that they have sold my reserved unit to someone else and she no longer has the unit I reserved for available. My only option was upgrade to bigger unit for 100 dollars more per month or go to 3rd floor for same price of 130. My only question was why did you rent it out when you made a reservation for it. Her respond our reservation are first comes first. If your policy is first com first why people have to make a reservation. I called their corporate number and the man said it is what it is, when I asked to talk to their manager to discount the bigger size which is Available he hanged up the phone. When I called back they screened my call and took them 20 minutes to answer and when they answered the lady said I will have my manager call you back in 15 minutes. 15 minutes has passed and I still don't have any call. Since they went under new management and new system their service went down. Sadly I don't recommend them to any friend and family and don't waist your time on making reservation since it's not a true factor and It's not going to get honored. Use other companies for your storage needs and save your self time. Don't use them. read more

So let me start by saying I was a customer for a year and was very happy with the facility and staff until an incident that happened yesterday that I think they should be held accountable for and potential renters should be aware of. I need a space again to store a vehicle and contacted them the other day. The woman (forgot her name) who works there spoke to me on the phone. She was very helpful and said she would hold the spot for a day for me until I could get there the following day to take care of paperwork. We discussed me coming by in the AM. Next morning rolls around and I get a call from a gentleman who I think is named Graham. He asks if I still want it and when I will be by. I tell him yes absolutely and will be in next 2-3 hours as I need to head that way anyways. He says great see you then. Fast forward 2 hours. I show up and he tells me he rented the space. I ask what happened we had an agreement and he starts to argue w me that I had to have rented it yesterday. Im like wait a minute...we just confirmed over phone and, BTW, the agreement was I would rent it today. While I know there is no guarantee on holds, your word is your word and trying to play it off like it's a misunderstanding is just unscrupulous. I'm pretty furious as anyone would be. We've been storing our belongings here for about 8 years after downsizing from a home to an apartment. The facility is always clean and management has been responsive to our needs. Today we called for another unit to temporarily store some furniture until a relative who wants the items can pick them up. Beware doing business with this company. Four years ago, my rent started off at $193 per month. Since they have never seen a rate increase they did not like, they just raised it again up to $331 per month. Whatever rate they promise you, you can be sure that you will not be paying that rate for long. Check out how they have jacked up my rates over time: July 2012 = $193 December 2012 = $211 September 2013 = $241 June 2014 = $268 March 2015 = $286 December 2015 = $305 September 2016 = will be $331 Tell me what else in your life has rate increases like that? We canceled my rental after only 6 months because of several problems. First, we noticed a brown liquid leaking from the ceiling of our unit only our belongings. We reported it and it was never repaired nor does it seem that they even looked at it. Next, we asked several times about moving to a smaller, cheaper unit and each time were told that either nothing was available or, when one became available, the price would be the same as what we were playing. Lastly, we were only given 30 days notice notice of a rental increase of nearly 20%! What's even more annoying about that is the notice was given via postal mail so, we barely had 2 weeks notice once we received the letter. When we canceled our rental, there were zero questions about our experience nor any effort to keep us as customers. We have nothing good to say about Extra Space Storage and do not recommend them to anyone. read more

So I came to store a few items and completed the application online. I have two different drivers license from different states. I somehow completed the application incorrectly which I assume caused red flags. Ive rented at extra space in the past, so there's nothing bringing in my drivers license wouldn't clear up. I found out upon arrival I couldn't get in. I called in the next day to ask what was going on Graham explained I needed to bring my identification in so I did. There was a lady there to gave me a hassle about my phone number being incorrect and mixing up a few things, however she had my identification. She started treating me as though I was doing something illegal. I ignored it because there were a few discrepancies. It was 5:50pm as I was setting up my account to have access by 6pm. I explained to the lady that I understand there were discrepancies so I would start the process over completely. I told her I would wait until I received my refund and try renting again. This was 06/08. On 06/08 my card was charged the balance instead of the funds from the pending transaction released back onto my card. Today 06/10 I say forget it I've been driving with this stuff In my car for days let's go ahead and pay again Grahm tell me he doesn't trust renting to me and recommend I go elsewhere. Lol. WTF! You don't know me. Crazy. Instead of being a problem solver he treated me like a criminal saying he's worried about the safety of the facility. I'm a mother of two kids wtf do I look like being a threat to a storage facility. I just want these items out of my car. I won't bother renting here however he can be obnoxious and rude. I rented with extra space storage for eight months when the incident occurred that caused me to drop my rating of this facility to a single star, if I could give zero stars I would. When I went initially to tour the facility and see the available units I had my 12 lb terrier mix, Angus, by my side. On leash and well socialized, as I always have him with me when I'm out and about. He is an old hand at these types of things. I made this point clear to the manager, that my dog was always by my side, and they told me it was fine for me to have Angus with me as long as he is kept on leash. It is a spacious facility and I thought this sounded fair, so I signed a rental agreement for one of the small, indoor units that myself, the manager, and Angus had toured earlier. Fast forward almost eight months later. I visit my unit, I would say, on average once a week. Sometimes more often and sometimes less. Well, I was approached by the manager and told that I cannot have my dog and that I must lock "the animal" in the car. I was immediately offended. I asked if he did not remember me coming, with Angus, to tour the facility before I rented. That I visit my unit fairly regularly over the course of eight months and have had Angus with me every time. He replied that there must have been a misunderstanding. His tone was very condescending and rude to me this whole time as well. Locking Angus in the car in the middle of July was not going to happen, and was completely wrong on so many levels for him to even suggest I do so. I believe that California law states that someone can legally break a window to free a dog locked in a vehicle, and yet this man from the storage facility suggests that is what I do? Needless to say I canceled my unit on the spot and loaded my car up. I will not be doing business with them again. I suppose the spacious facilities might be worth the single star. :/ read more

I've been using this location for the past 2 1/2 years. I find the facility to be well kept & pleasant in appearance. The storage unit itself is good & I feel my belongings are safe & secure. Staff have always been courteous, helpful & well mannered. The one issue I have is not about the facility itself but the company itself, and there continual increases in rates. As noted with other reviews this becomes increasingly annoying as it seems to happen with regularity. read more
