This place is delicious! My boyfriend and I tried it for take out and we are now hooked. I ordered the spinach ravioli, which was pretty good. He got the Chicken Parm which was AMAZING. Now it's the only thing that either of us will order! The chicken is cooked perfectly... not too dry. The sauce and pasta are delicious too. We have also ordered the garlic bread, which is so-so. It is a little expensive but enough food for dinner and then lunch the next day. I definitely recommend Comella's! read more

Best reason to go to Comella's? The Mess! The mess is like an unfinished lasagna. Pasta mixed with sauce cheese, and your choice of meats, chicken, sausage etc. It's tossed and baked. When you are feeling like some heavy duty pasta with a twist, Comella's Mess combos satisfy. The size of the entrees are large. Prices are really good for the amount and quality of the dishes. Comella's isn't a large place so if you are looking to dine in, you may have to wait for a table, but take out is the way to go here. They do sell beer and wine for those opting to ea in. read more

Soooo good. A great change from a typical take-out/eat-in establishment. The portions are huge. I tend to always get the stuffed shells because they're so great. Called in for delivery and wanted to pay with card. Employee hangs up before I can give card number. Call back and try to pay with card, employee tells me he doesn't have authority to take credit card orders over the phone. Say fine and offer to pay cash. 1 hour later no food so I call in where the same employee says ya it's been sitting here for 30 minutes but I dont know where our delivery driver is. Tells me I should just come to the store and pick it up. He should of called the delivery driver or me instead of letting it sit for 30 minutes. Make sure you have somebody trained at the job working the front counter! It's not a job that requires much but poor kid had no idea what he was doing. read more

Ok so since my son is older now, I have to admit it's better! Since he can now eat off the menu we practically go there once a week to get our fix! As I mentioned earlier, the food is to die for!! The $6.99 cheese pizza has my husband foaming at the mouth just thinking about it along with my picky son! I LOVE the Alfredo with butter garlic sauce with all my heart! The meatballs? Eggplant lasagna well basically everything is awesome! There's a waitress there (Melissa) who is always so helpful and kind, and her big smiling dimples make you feel so welcomed. However, we ordered 3 pizzas recently and when we brought them home we realized they weren't entirely cooked and there a few more bubbles in the bread than desired - I called back and told them the situation and they were so unbelievably understanding and great about the whole thing! Horrible experience! Won't come back. We ordered 2 large pizzas (one was cheese, one garlic) tonight at 6:20pm by phone. Today is Monday night, not a weekend. The girl at Comella's said "you're order will be ready for pickup at 6:45." We drove down and got there right at 6:45, went in, paid and was told 10 more minutes. Fine. Totally understandable, it was the height of the dinner rush. We sat and waited from 6:45 until 7:05, still no pizza. Again, our original order for only 2 pizzas was placed at 6:20pm. Meanwhile at least 8 people came in and picked up orders and ordered at the counter & had their orders filled while we continued to wait. At 7:10 I walked back to the counter and asked "how much longer for our order?". I was very RUDELY told, "they burnt your pizza and you can either take 2 cheese or sit down and wait 10 more minutes!" I explained we've already been waiting almost an hour, that our order was placed at 6:20. I was again to "WAIT 10 MORE MINUTES OR TAKE 2 CHEESE!" I found this very hard to digest since about 20 pizzas walked out the door in the time we were sitting and waiting. If the pizza we ordered at 6:20 was burnt so bad that it couldn't be sold, our pizza should've been recooked before the 20 ordered after us. We ended up settling for 2 cheese even though we paid for extra, took them and left since our 3 kids were waiting an hour for pizza in a school night. Mistakes happen but the girl working the counter was so rude I will never give them my business again. You get what you pay for. If you want to put up with this crap to get a $5 pizza go for it. Or go somewhere else, pay a few dollars more, get your order in a reasonable amount of time and hold the side of bad attitude and poor service!! read more

DEADBEAT PASTA. We dropped $140 at Comella's and got back about $60 worth of cheap pasta. Service was terrible (rude woman manager). $50 on a bucket of Linguine with 1 pint of White Clam Sauce (essentially FLAVORED WATER + A FEW CLAMS). That works out to 4-5 TABLESPOONS OF LIQUID PER PERSON and a huge box of plainly boiled pasta. (32 tablespoons in a pint, and one bucket serves 6-8 people). What a rip off! We could have boiled the same linguine at home, dumped in several cans of clams and olive oil, have better tasting dinner and save ~$40. Service was a joke. We called Comella's back afterwards, thinking maybe they forgot to give us another pint of "sauce". The nasty woman manager who talked to us had an attitude and was completely indifferent to our inquiry. We didn't expect to be snuffed, then we escalated it into a complaint. She REFUSED to give us a refund (offered a $6 credit for something else), but left us hanging with a boatload of deadbeat pasta. Thanks for ruining our Friday-after-Thanksgiving party! And $20 for an iceberg lettuce and tomato salad that we could have put together for $6 in 3 seconds at the Star Market next door. My extended family was regular customers and had great experiences at three other Comella's ... until now. Sorry Comella. You are not taking our money again. We have young kids, busy careers, good manners, and do take-out 3 to 5 nights per week. There are plenty of other options around Newton, with better food and better service. And we are sorry to see you go. It's ironic that for the same $140, we ate like kings elsewhere just the day before. Fresh whole fish plus 8 entrees (many are seafood) at Joyful Garden for 6 adults and 4 kids. We might come back for the tasty Chicken Parm, provided that the biatch isn't biting our heads off. I work in JP and come here for lunch quite often, mainly for the pizza. They make a really good pizza, and like a lot of people have already said, you can't beat a large cheese for $5 (most toppings are an extra $2 or $3 each). I have also tried a few of the "messes". They're tasty, but not something I'd drive out of my way for, and not nearly the value for the dollar as the pizza.. Can't stress it enough - the pizza is the reason to come to Comella's. One editorial comment - I see a few reviewers here bashing Comella's and comparing it unfavorably to restaurants in the North End and other fancy Italian joints (the type of places where you pay $15 for an appetizer and $25-30 for an entree). Well seriously, what do expect? This is just a neighborhood pizza joint that sells good cheap eats - not a fancy place you'd take your wife for dinner. I recently decided to order from the comellas for dinner. I ordered a cheese pizza, buffalo wings, and a steak and cheese pizza. The buffalo wings and cheese pizza were very good. However, the steak and cheese pizza was disgusting. Very few burnt pieces of steak and random slaps of American cheese on it. They had the audacity to charge $14.99 for this "speciality pizza". I was very disappointed in this pizza. I'm not sure if I'll be going back to comellas with the prices for such a poorly presented product. read more

I read rave reviews about "The Mess," and I live in the neighborhood, so I was hoping this would become my new go-to restaurant for fabulous take-out pasta. The tomato sauce in our "Mess" was very nice indeed. I'd guess there are some people in that kitchen who know how to cook great food. I was expecting to wait at least five minutes for our order, and thought it a bad omen when we got it almost immediately. The pasta -- which might very well have been fabulous homemade pasta at some point -- was overcooked to the point of mush just short of baby-food texture. The sausage in the sauce was from sausage links that I would say are Costco-quality. The skin (synthetic, I think) was on, the width of slices and partial slices was wildly erratic, and more often than not a link wasn't sliced through, so if one got any sausage at all in a bite, it was likely to be at least 1/4 of a link at once. I left thinking that Comella's *might* make good pasta that would be worth buying uncooked, assuming they make their own. Comella's tomato sauce tastes homemade -- light years beyond supermarket jar sauce, and just about as good as my homemade sauce (which I say with a bit of a blush, as I pride myself on my home cooking). But I'm too busy a lot of days to cook my homemade sauce. If Comella's gave me the chance to: a) buy add-ons for pasta deli-style (e.g., I'd pay for a little container of FRESH herbs to sprinkle in at the right time with sauce, and I'd also pay for lovely cheeses, crumbled sausage, and the like); b) buy pasta that tastes truly homemade (the pasta I had might have been homemade, but I couldn't tell, given how overcooked it was); and c) buy tubs of basic sauce (tomato, non-disgusting alfredo, etc.) ... ... then they'd have a very cool concept that would work ideally for take-out and catering alike, and I could easily get hooked. Oh, and "garlic toast" should show some evidence of toasting and/or garlic. Ours was, I'd swear, just warmed, buttered, sections of a long loaf of bread. I honestly hated to give a negative review of this place, given the evidence I thought I saw of serious, lovely, rustic Italian-American home cooking. But if you're coming for "The Mess," expect an honest-to-goodness, mushy mess. As things are now, I'd say the best way to go for Comella's would be to buy a tub of sauce and use it with any box of dried pasta from the supermarket and the other ingredients of your choice. If I get any indication that Comella's has stepped up their standards, I will eagerly try their food again, and will be happy to recommend it if appropriate. Delicious! The lasagna and any of the messes are fantastic. Always use the right ratio of sauce to cheese. The people that work here are very polite and helpful. A man who I assume to be one of the owners comes in from time to time and I've also seen him at the Needham location, he always wants to make sure people are enjoying their food. I called and got hung up on three times in a row while trying to order. the customer service and atmosphere was not a very friendly one. they dont have paper plates eithier. Try the mess! Its delicious. After moving to West Roxbury I was pretty tired and didn't want to cook dinner, but we were starved! Comella's to the rescue. We walked in on a quiet Tuesday night and ordered 2 pasta dishes. Both were equally delicious and the service was great. My husband took his time figuring out what he wanted and he was never rushed or ignored. Even I was starting to get impatient, but the server was super cool the whole time. I just wanted to eat! LOL Anyway, our food came out with relative quickness and I was pretty impressed with the results. Great food and service at a great price. So glad Comella's is nearby! read more

A great low key, fair priced, super service eats. I went there for the first time Monday at 7 right before the rush. I think this was the fastest served meal I had ever had, and that includes Subway, McD's, and microwaving something from my fridge. I had the Mess (highly recommended) with lasagna. The sauce was a little sweet but not to the point of being called ketchup. The pasta was cooked perfecto, al dente the way I love it. And I think they use 7 types of cheese in their layers. For solid, home-style Italian food, Comella's is a great choice. Nothing fancy, just good honest Italian comfort food. There is one menu item to stay away from though: the garlic bread. After several visits to Comella's I was very disappointed to find a rusted nail in my eggplant parm! I could have broken a tooth or been seriously injured!! Everything here is really good. You absolutely get what you pay for. The sauce is a little sweet for my taste but some people really enjoy that. I havent had a bad meal from Comellas, the mess plates (grandpas mess) are legit. The pizza is damn good. Seriously i didnt expect a 5 dollar pizza to be that good. I only tried their pizza eaten inside. The topping of sliced buffalo mozzarella and sauce was ok....but the crust tasted like it came pre-made and frozen..like a cracker almost......not fresh. Last week me && my bf decided to try this place called Comella's. We've never had their food before and just wanted to try a new spot to get quick food from. We ordered the steak and cheese pizza and wings. Let me just tell you. I've never had a worst pizza than this. To the point where I couldn't even finish the slice I had just bit into. This pizza tasted HORRIBLE! && even worse, the presentation was HORRIBLE! They literally threw square cheese all over the pizza. The wings tasted like I bought them from stop && shop and didn't let them cook all the way in the oven. Worst food I've ever had. Waste of money for food I didn't even eat. My bf did not like it either, we tried to give it to his brother who had tasted the food and put it back down on his plate as well. A whole meal went to the trash. I have tasted pizza I have not liked but was still edible. This definitely was not one of them. I've told my co-workers this story and what they stated was that I should have ordered the pasta mess. If the pasta mess does taste good, then they should stick to just selling that. How each Comella's location deviates based on service and quality of food is astonishing. West Roxbury should learn a thing or two from Chestnut Hill in the Customer Service department. A few weeks back, my friends and I placed a relatively large order for several items--3 of them were personal pizzas. Somehow we ended up with 2 personal cheese pizzas (as ordered) and a personal pepperoni pizza when we had ordered a personal buffalo chicken pizza. The receipt read, personal buffalo chicken pizza, and the order when read back to me, included a buffalo chicken pizza. The restaurant did not offer any kind of solution and just said whoops... I requested a credit back to my credit card but the girl I spoke with (Nicole) insisted that she could not edit the transaction and I would only receive an in-store credit. Reluctantly I agreed (because we order from there a semi-decent amount). Fast forward to this past Sunday (12/17) when we placed another order. I called the store to place the order, and was kept on hold for a good 10 minutes. While I understand that Sundays, especially during football season, are busy, 10 minutes to order take out is excessive. I placed my order online through their app after that (I was ordering with a group of people) and all seemed fine. I went to pick up the food about a half hour after I ordered and was curtly told by Nicole that my food would not be ready until 7:30 ( I walked in at 7) because I had ordered my food online. I received my pickup time confirmation email at 9:30pm. I also asked her to apply the credit she told me I had several weeks prior. She didn't even remember offering me the credit and didn't want to apply it. She curtly again informed me that since I placed the order online there was absolutely nothing she could do for me either way. I left after this conversation and returned at 7:30pm to pick up my food. Despite coming back when I was told to, the food was cold. I have called twice trying to speak with a manager and was simply told they weren't available. Had the staff not been so rude I don't think it would've been such a big deal that the food was cold Sunday night. It's just frustrating to spend a decent amount of money on pizza and etc. and to get crappy service on top of bad food. read more

Words cannot express how much I love this place. I've only tried a few dishes, but my 'regular' has become their rendition of chicken, broccoli, and ziti. The broccoli is cooked perfectly (huge, crisp, and vibrant green) and the serving size is more than enough to fill you up. Although I've yet to try it (mainly because I'm not the biggest fan of sweet potato), I've taken multiple people here who have tried the sweet potato ravioli dish and swear it's out of this world. The service is also great, and the people behind the counter are always very sweet. It is a bit on the pricier side, but I'd rather pay an extra few bucks for something awesome on occasion than constantly stick with same ol' same ol'. read more
