Spring rolls with tofu
Julie S.

I hadn't been to this spot in many years, but our usual pho place was closed, and we were in the mood for pho. Com Tam Thanh looked like it hadn't been updated since the last time I visited; the decor is definitely nothing fancy. The service is efficient but no frills. But the food is still good. They have a really large menu for a Vietnamese place; usually, these places specialize in one or two dishes. They offer broken rice plates, pho, porridge dishes, stir-fry dishes, and also noodle salads. I ordered the chicken pho with added vegetables (broccoli, carrots, and cabbage). I usually find the chicken pho broth to be a little less rich than beef, but it was what I was in the mood for. My companion loved his beef porridge. Everything is fresh and fast here.

I used to go to Com Tam Thanh often then went a long stretch without going and was crazing some wonton soup so decided to get some take out. The prices have risen significantly from the last time I was here. 3 soups came out to $60. One thing is for the prices to go up another is for them to go up and the quality not follow suit. The soup is fine but nothing out of this world. They do give you a good potion but overall not really worth the expenditure.

I only came here because of its close proximity to where I live but I will be returning here for sure. My friend and I ordered pho which was good but my favorite part was the option to swap the rice noodles out for cooked vegetables for $3. My pho had a ton of fresh veggies making the soup still hearty and very satisfying without missing the noodles at all. It is a very casual, authentic place. Not noisy, not very busy. Service was good on a moderately busy Saturday evening.

Vegetarian Pho

I was craving Vietnamese food, and after a quick search, I found this place. I'm so glad I did! From the moment you walk in, you can feel its authenticity (don't let the outside fool you). It looks small, but it's actually quite spacious, bright, and clean. The menu offers a variety of options, including enough vegetarian choices in my opinion. The prices are reasonable, especially in this economy, and the portions are pretty generous. The food: well-seasoned, balanced, and with the right texture. If you're in the area, give it a try!

We stopped by on a foggy morning after seeing the place fairly busy. My husband ordered the beef noodle soup with a pork chop on the side. The portion was generous with a good broth and bean sprouts on the side, it tasted good overall. The person at the front came across as a bit rude and the service could have been better. The ambience was just okay and it's on the pricier side for what you get!

Pho Tai

Been to the Newark location and this restaurant has a large parking lot and huge inside. It was a tad warm, but service was prompt. Huge menu but I love my pho tai, so ordered that whereas my friend had bun with their grilled pork as our server said their grilled meats are well known. Pho came out with a huge side of my raw onions in vinegar. Overall, it was pretty good. Some steak slices were chewy but some were perfectly tender. It's a standard bowl of pho but on the pricier side for at $16.95 a bowl.

Many times I've passed by without further thought, which is a great tragedy cause it turns out their fare is pretty solid and definitely competitive with other Vietnamese spots in the area. Super casual eatery though, so decor is quite simple and service was curt (albeit quite efficient, after you get their attention). Pretty good variety of smoothies and drinks as well, but I was there for a quick lunch and they certainly delivered. As a plus they do have a small parking lot to make it even easier to drop by. Their Brisket Pho (4.5/5) was quite tender and broth was pretty on point, plenty of fragrant veggies to toss in. Broth temp wasn't quite the hottest, but flavor was good and my brother was left quite satisfied. 23 Cam Tam Bi Cha Ga Nuong (5/5) - was a nice combination rice plate with their Chicken. Deliciously tender and well seasoned for a grill option item. The rest of the platter tasted rather home-style with a pretty light seasoning but good on texture and freshness. The side broth given was perfectly piping hot to pair with. Definitely would grab this one again without hesitation.

Rare beef pho

Came for lunch on a Friday and the restaurant was packed! Clearly, this is a local lunch hot spot! Although it was busy, we were sat fairly quick & ordered shortly after we sat down. I had the rare beef pho which was HUGE. The broth was flavorful and full of noodles and beef. On the side they provided a huge pile of basil , cilantro, lemon, jalapeño, and bean sprouts to add as you wish. This family owned business provides friendly, quick service and delicious homemade comfort meals.

One of our favorite local pho spot that also offers Vietnamese & Chinese entrees. Serving size large enough for two meals. Great place for take out where meals enjoyed at home taste as freshly served dine-in. Time the call in order to enjoy it as fresh as possible because only takes 15-20 min to prep. Seafood pho is Dad's favorite because of the satisfying portion of fish, shrimp & calamari. Careful as the shrimp is usually cleaned thoroughly, but this time the intestine stuck to shrimp. An extra rinse would be fine. Hubby always enjoys the lean raw beef pho. When ordering to go, ask for meat to be pre-cooked and will put in broth. The veggie tofu stir fry was flavorful which included a side of rice.

Broken rice

Tried this restaurant because it was local to where I was at. Decided to get broken rice plate with grilled pork. Both the pork skin and pork chop was delicious! It was soft but you could taste the grilled flavor. My least favorite was the broth and the egg meatloaf. It tasted okay, but not the best. Overall, 7.5/10 meal!

Today we were craving Vietnamese food, this was more of the complete Vietnamese restaurants around the area. AMBIANCE: Parking: Plaza parking. Not a big plaza but a not too busy place as it seems to have a good flow. Seating: Inside seating good for groups small and large. It can fit maybe about 50 people. Vibes: A semi-suburban area of San Jose. It gets pretty busy with the school or the hospital near by. A few minutes down and you are in the more touristy/busy area of Valley Fair/Santa Row mall. The restaurant itself is relatively simple. Pretty bright, decor here and there to represent Vietnamese culture and pictures of some of their foods. There are a few tvs on if you want to watch the news or catch a sports game. Great for gatherings and if you want then you can be productive. FOOD: Banh Mi - BBQ Pork (Recommend) Delicious but a bit pricey. A good portion of meat, fresh bread and veggies. There's a small shop across the block that sells banh mi for half the price (limited choices and runs out quick) CUSTOMER SERVICE: Simple and cordial. A very hustle and bustle energy. TL; DR OVERALL: 3.5 Stars. Good selections, good food, and a steady ambiance. I am surprised with the cost of the Banh Mi but the Bay Area is expensive. I wouldn't mind coming back here. #Represent-ASIAN TIPS: * Well rounded shop for food and drinks! * Com Tam means broken rice.

Stopped by to get some pho but got other things too. The ambiance and service were nice and the food came out pretty fast. Everything tasted awesome! It's good to have a com place that's not in east sj. The pho was also really good and flavorful. The spring rolls were delicious with the peanut sauce.

Since I work a full day, this is my go to spot when I want pho. I have ordered other dishes here such as their rice plates, bun thit nuong and nem nuong cuon. Most people I have seen usually order the pho. If you are eating in, a server will seat you. You have to go up to the counter to pay your bill. Food comes out super fast, as well as service. They also sell smoothies and milk teas along with other traditional Vietnamese drinks. I would advise not getting the boba here. The smoothies are really delicious though. The restaurant itself is wide and open with plenty of space in between tables. There is also a separate room to the right of the main entrance. I think I have only eaten on that side once. There are two separate parking lots on both side of the restaurant which are tiny so be aware of that.

Anyone try the pad Thai?

I have never tried pad thai at a vietnamese restaurant and I have also never tried Pho at a thai restaurant, but good luck. Hope it works out for you.

Why are you guys cash only? Is this a permanent thing?

Despite it being in a big lot, parking still took a while to find. Thankfully, we had thankfully just beat the lunch rush and not had to wait longer than 10 minutes for a table. My friend and I shared a Northern spread (Bun Cha Ha Noi) and a Southern style Goat Curry (Banh Mi Cari De). Service was definitely on the slower side that day, but thankfully we were proactive at getting the orders in. The Bun Cha Ha Noi was delicious - pretty much a DIY spring roll - all the fun, all the mess, with none of the clean up other than licking the plates clean. The pork belly was delicious; I was surprised how much I liked it, since I'm not a fan of pork. I devoured numerous rolls, and we also had some extra vermicelli to finish off the rest of the protein. This single meal was definitely more than enough for two! The Banh Mi Cari De (goat curry) was unfortunately quite the opposite. The goat was cooked very well - tough, gamy, and difficult to eat. There were probably six pieces in total, our first was tender, our second had bone, a little harder to chew, and the last was best compared to rubber. The curry was a bit watery, which made the banh mi soggy when dipped in. This was probably an adventurous try, but not a dish I'd ever consider ordering again.

It's a grilled tumeric fish dish that packs a ton of flavor, and you add noodles and herbs to make a delish spring roll (or in my case a fat burrito). It comes out on a sizzling plate so you have to let it cook a bit to render the onions and dill to get that perfect texture. The sauce might be a bit fishy to some, but it's what ties the bite together! It's def an acquired taste, but if you are open to trying new things, please come try this speciality dish. Tip: on Wednesdays, this dish is only $28, whereas the OG price is around $36. The fried rice here was surprisingly super flavorful! You can taste the separate grains (which is when you know the cook on the rice is good) and the salt levels were top tier. If you can't find parking in that plaza, there's more parking across the road where the Target is. After spending about ten minutes on the written wait-list, our names were called. It's definitely a little easier communicating with much of the staff if you speak Vietnamese, and I find that waiting right outside the restaurant is best because they default to calling your name from the door once it's your turn. The interior is crammed with tables; the atmosphere feels busy and warm. There is a single room women's bathroom and men's bathroom in the back as well. The decor leans toward being classic more than trendy, which I liked. The menu is pretty big, offering a variety of items ranging from mainstream Vietnamese options to ones I don't encounter as often. I recommend eating family-style for many of these dishes, including the Bún Chả Cá Lã Vọng, which I enjoyed with my partner. The prices are pretty average, and their portions are generous. That said, they are cash or Zelle only. There is an ATM that you can use if you forget to bring cash, but this is still something to keep in mind. Overall, I can definitely see myself coming back. I wish I had the stomach capacity to try more of their dishes at once, and I 100% recommend that anyone give this place a shot.
