Pho 85 has all the ingredients of a successful pho house. The restaurant is small, clean, cute and refreshingly well air-conditioned. That may not sound important until you're sitting in front of a giant bowl of piping hot pho on a warm day. Speaking of the pho, the broth is well balanced, flavorful and served nice and hot, exactly as it should be. No waiting for it to cool down and no wondering where the flavor went. I also appreciate that the menu doesn't try to be everything to everyone. It's focused and thoughtful, with the key dishes you'd expect including bò kho. My husband is a big fan of their bánh mì, which gives me an excuse to steal a few bites every visit. Another bonus is the location. It's conveniently right off Highway 85 with plenty of parking, which is practically a luxury in the Bay Area. Good pho, good sandwiches, easy parking and a comfortable dining room. With the high ratings on Yelp and Google, I came in expecting this to be one of the best bowls of pho in the area. It also looks fairly new, so I was excited to give it a shot. I'll start with the positives because there are definitely some. The fresh noodles are fantastic. Easily some of the best I've had in San Jose. They have a great texture and hold up beautifully in the broth. The portions of meat are also generous, and the beef itself is high quality and flavorful. If you're someone who judges pho by the noodles and amount of protein, you'll probably leave happy. That said, the broth is the heart of pho, and this is where it lost me. First, it wasn't served piping hot. I could sip it straight from the spoon without blowing on it. For me, pho broth should arrive almost boiling, continuing to cook the thin slices of beef and staying hot throughout the meal. Flavor wise, it was also far from traditional. The broth was heavily seasoned with dark, roasted spices. I picked up strong notes of star anise, clove, and nutmeg, and the overall profile felt more intense than balanced. Instead of being light, clean, and refreshing, it came across as dark, meaty, and over spiced. It just didn't have the delicate depth I look for in a Vietnamese pho broth. I burped up cinnamon/spice the next day. Not good The oxtail wasn't as tender as I expected, and the beef meatballs had an oddly floury texture and flavor that overpowered the meat. I also would have liked more onions and was surprised there wasn't any culantro. Small detail, but I also missed having extras like fermented garlic or fresh chilis available at the table to customize the bowl. Even the decor felt a little disconnected from the food. It wasn't bad, just not the vibe I expected when walking into a pho restaurant. Overall, I can see why people like this place, especially for the fresh noodles and generous portions of quality beef. But for someone who believes the broth makes or breaks a bowl of pho, this one didn't hit the mark. One visit and it's already up there on my list. Ordered #3 pho tai (rare steak pho) and a side of beef balls with regular noodles. There's an option to get fresh noodles. Good broth - tasted clean and wasn't bland, salty or that oily. For the vegetable plate, they automatically cook the bean sprouts. It was 8:15pm and it's about 15 minutes away, so we were hesitant to go since they close at 9pm. Called to check and they said not a problem at all. A few others came in after us and got seated, and we saw others get turned away (because it was already past closing time). We didn't feel rushed at all - good customer service! 2nd time here with my 9 yr old son and he absolutely loves pho. We get a large and share a bowl with him, he eats everything up. His regular will be a ube smoothie with boba everytime he visits. Aside from keeping the former Mochinut walls, Pho85 minimal renovations have the store looking clean, refreshed, and brightened. They got some nice sturdy menu boards. I've eaten here a few times during their series of promotions and will say, it is pretty decent in flavor, but it is also pretty salty. A little skimpy on the bean sprouts when you have to share it with multiple parties. Im guessing you can always ask for more. Haven't had anything but pho. Came here around 7:55 pm on a Friday with my girlfriend! PARKING: this restaurant is in a plaza so there was plenty of parking. PLACE: used to be where mochinut was so it is pretty small and there are a few booth tables and it isn't hugely spacious so it could get crowded quick if it is busy. Special grilled shrimp, grilled pork, and egg roll - portions weren't huge as I expected but since a lot of meat came into the bowl I understand and also since it is for one person as well. Been wanting to try this place out since good authentic Asian restaurants aren't as prevalent in this area. We came in around 5pm and it wasn't too busy. Very clean and modern vibes inside. We ordered a #4 and #14. Both came with a good amount of noodles and meat. The meat quality really stood out to us - they were good cuts and very tasty! We had lunch here today forth first time. Pho 85 is located in the corner of Cottle and Beswick Dr. next door to China Delight. They took over the Mochinut spot that closed in January 2026. We walked in and went straight to their front counter. We were shown to a table and given menus. We hadn't been there for 3 minutes and we were asked for our order. My goodness lol , we just sat down and have never been here before. We told the young lady we needed more time. The inside looks exactly the same as Mochinut except for replacing the Mochinut sign, with a Pho 85 sign above the angel wings painting on the wall. They also painted over all the pained doughnuts except for one. They packed as many tables as they could in there, because the space is small, but it works. They did great filling that space. We were finally ready to order. The waitress came and we ordered the shrimp spring rolls for our appetizer without bean sprouts. My hubby ordered #36 the pork and grilled shrimp rice plate and I ordered the #31 the grilled pork, grilled shrimp and egg rolls with no bean sprouts in the salad. Our waitress had a look on her face like she was upset and didn't want to be there. When I reminded her, kindly, about no bean sprouts in any of our food, she just stared me down with a look of disgust. She also didn't write our order down. I had a feeling that things were going to go wrong because of that and I was right, unfortunately. Our shrimp spring rolls arrived first. They came out within 7 minutes. I noticed that there were no bean sprouts, yay! However, one of the shrimps in the roll had three dark black spots on it. And they were not small spots either. There was no way I was going to consume this and I was surprised that they served this to us like that. I got the attention of our waitress and her superior came by as well to look at it and apologized and said they would remake it. It took 10 minutes for the remade shrimp spring rolls to come out. And guess what? They filled it with bean sprouts. So here we go again. I had to tell their manager that I told our waitress that I can't have bean sprouts and that we can't eat this. She looked pretty pissed off but took it back to have it remade again. Finally after waiting 15 minutes. They brought out the new shrimp spring rolls and they were made right. They did, however, forget to put the crushed peanuts on our dipping sauce.....oh well. The shrimp spring rolls were just okay. They were very plain with just rice noodles and lettuce with shrimp halves. No cilantro, carrots or anything else. The peanut dipping sauce was good. We added some sriracha to it and that made it better. Our main dishes took over 30 minutes to arrive and both orderes were wrong. They gave my husband a pork and rice plate with no shrimp and with 2 egg rolls he didn't order. Then my order arrived and all I got was pork, 1 egg roll chopped up and plain lettuce with bean sprouts lol . I mean really? At this point the whole thing was just laughable. This is why it's critical to write a person's order down! We had to explain to them what the was wrong and that took awhile. Instead of leaving leaving my husband's plate and bring out some shrimp on the side for him, they took his whole plate away. What a waste. He could have at least started eating the pork and rice. I guess since he didn't order the egg rolls they didn't want him to eat them. They were already on the same plate. At least let him eat them since you messed up his order. I had to show them a picture of what I ordered and explain to them I only didn't want beans sprouts. I did want the pickled carrots, daikon radish and cucumbers on it. I wanted it just like the picture but with no bean sprouts. Finally our food came out correct but all the pork and shrimp were ice cold and overcooked to the point of having trouble chewing it. I have never experienced anything like this before. I have to say it was very frustrating and disappointing to say the least. There was one employee who apologized and was very sincere about it. She was very sweet and didn't charge us for the shrimp spring rolls, which was kind of her. I just can't justify coming back here. I think there needs some improvement with customer service. I also think they need a better system with taking down orders that will avoid repeated mistakes and wasted food because of those mistakes. And please don't serve cold food to your customers. Overall, a very bad lack of communication and understanding of what we ordered. Numerous mistakes with our food, because of not properly communicating to the kitchen. And the quality of the food was just not there. Dried up grilled pork and shrimp that is served cold is not acceptable. The white rice was also dried up and old. I hope they can learn from these mistakes and improve their business. read more

I walked in and was greeted and handed a menu. I decided on the spring roll appetizers and the special - $12 for a bowl of brisket/flank pho. Where all bowls of pho are close to $20 a bowl nowadays, this is a steal. The spring rolls came out first. I think they had an option for pork or shrimp - I opted for shrimp. There were 4 half rolls, all with lettuce sticking out of them. I only had one, dipped in the peanut hoisin sauce. And then my pho arrived. It was a pretty big bowl, steaming and hot. Plenty of pieces of meat. Broth was flavorful - very star anise forward. Not too oily either. It was a solid bowl. I would have this again - but I like the dac biet version with all the things. Also I liked that one of the waiters brought me over a to-go container for my spring rolls before I even had to ask. I was only able to have a half of one, along with my pho and I was pretty stuffed. We ordered the grilled pork spring rolls (A7) Kids meal (19) with filet mignon(rare) filet mignon rare pho (4) and mango smoothie (B18) with crystal boba.
