I recently went to Colonnade with a friend and my mom. We ordered salmon and what was supposed to be a medium-cooked steak, all while knowing they do fried chicken best, but not expecting what we got. The salmon came out not cooked fully, sushi looking, and the steak came out cooked as if it was a hamburger and looked almost cartoonish. The service was subpar as our waitress rarely checked on us for refills and took several requests before something like a side of ranch was able to happen. Additionally on the topic of sides, our waitress brought us the wrong side dishes and never realized nor asked if everything looked good. The reason we went was because of Guy Fieri from diners, drive ins, and dives visited, but we were severely disappointed and underwhelmed. If you're looking for a great place to bring your grandmother on Sunday after church, this is the spot. But if you like well-cooked, flavorful food, look elsewhere. I got the "famous" fried chicken. It was a bit on the dry side, which isn't too much of an issue. But I had to douse it in hot sauce to taste anything but grease. The breading and meat itself was virtually unseasoned. My wife got the chicken-fried steak, and if it weren't for the texture, I wouldn't be able to tell apart from the fried chicken. The mac n cheese was coagulated and bland. The only good thing we got was the stewed corn, but even that needed salt and pepper. For $17 fried chicken and $16 chicken fried steak, this meal fell well below expectations. Mark was still hungry after our four hours of chilling at Vino Venue. He had the ribeye steak with two side salads and loved it all. I had the vegetarian meal. As usual it's just mediocre. Canned green beans, canned pickled beets, sweet potato soufflé and steamed Brussels sprouts. I order this all the time since I'm primarily vegetarian. The Brussels are bland, the sweet potatoes were delicious. I wish they could put more thought and seasoning into their vegetarian options. Service remains top notch. Daniel waited on us tonight and service was awesome as always. This place is a crowd pleaser for many but just is not great for those of us that are primarily vegetarian. Came back for dinner last night because Mark wanted prime rib. He loved the prime rib and his collards. His wedge with blue cheese dressing was not as good as previous visits. It was missing the bacon bits and other toppings. Service from our waitress was friendly but rushed. We wanted to get her attention for the missing toppings but she was too busy. I ordered the flounder special served on top of polenta. It had a delicious red pepper romesco sauce around it. It's an Atlanta institution in the very best way - on the level of Balthazar in NYC or Commander's Palace in New Orleans. The southern food is always good -- but it's the service, the overall atmosphere, the heavy pour, and the people watching/admiring is what it's all about. The bar is a fantastic place to wait for your table. Love, love seeing wait times there again. And complaints about the service? Gimme a big ole break...they are slammed and doing the best they can just like everyone in town with this labor shortage. Having been a Colonnade "regular" since 1988, it is kind of sad to see what it has become. I feel like we are watching a loved one on hospice care- not knowing the date that it will end but all the while, knowing that it must be coming. Even allowing for Covid related hardships, she's just not what she used to be. I love and thank all the staff and crew that have welcomed so many of us for so many years- Love and thank them to the point that I will not stop going and giving what support I can but, the overall experience and the menu is not living up to the precedent set by her own past. For all the years that I have lived in Atlanta, Colonnade was always a reliable "go to" friend both for locals and for friends and family from out of town. You are letting us down... you're letting yourself down. Change is constant... but is it always good? I can only hope that a renewed interest will come, that someone can find some passion for preserving AND REVIVING this Atlanta landmark. Came by for dinner and really loved the fried chicken. We had the Southern fried chicken, fried shrimp, and prime rib. The fried chicken was the best - juicy, flavorful, and lightly breaded. The fried shrimp was ok but not something I would get again. The prime rib was huge and also just not my thing. Each dish comes with two sides and they have a lot of variety. We tried the fried okra, macaroni and cheese, onion rings, rutabagas, sweet potato souffle, corn, collards, wedge of lettuce salad, and house salad. Loved the corn - it is fresh corn that is shaved and creamed. The fried okra and salads were also good. I didn't care for the collards, sweet potato souffle, mac and cheese, or the rutabagas (weird taste). Great spot for traditional Southern food. The environment is a bit old and dated and likely caters to an older crowd. However, I thought the food was great and would definitely take visitors here over Mary Mac's. I have been a Colonnade customer for more than 30+ years when I lived in Atlanta. We didn't go terribly often but over those years we went several times a year primarily because of the consistency in the quality of the food and dependable and mostly pleasant service. The last time we came to the Colonnade was July of 2022 and the service and food was exactly as we remembered it. However, tonight everything seemed a bit off. It started when we sat at our table and before saying "hello" or "welcome to The Colonnade" or "my name is ...., and I am your server tonight." The first statement was "And how will you be paying for this?" Wow. No first act---jump right to the end of the play! Well, that was the introduction to the remainder of the experience: instead of the bread basket with a selection of bread for all the guests at the table to share, we each received a biscuit and small cornbread muffin. Hmmmm well okay, less waste I guess. Then the server started taking the order: when the first patron didn't respond quickly enough for her liking, she immediately suggested "Well maybe someone else can go next." When I asked for grilled catfish instead of fried, she said, "Catfish only comes fried. But clearly in the menu was the statement"All fish comes fried, grilled, or steamed." Oh well. The fried catfish had very little flavor, the batter was mushy and not crunchy, and there was only tartar sauce on the plate. I was nearly finished with my meal before the server returned to our table to offer assistance. No sense to ask for cocktail sauce now! Another guest at our table had fried shrimp dinner. There were many nice sized shrimp and they were good. However he asked for the signature Marian salad. The Thousand Island dressing was luke warm and void of taste, and the salad itself was not usual: tonight's salad had lettuce in big pieces and the cucumber was not chopped but sliced and separate from the salad instead of mixed in. He also ordered corn bread dressing as a side, and it was cold and not up to The Colonnade standards. Overall the experience was disappointing without even a glimpse of the memory of the excellence that was once The Colonnade. We will have to be more discerning when considering The Colonnade again. So we visited this place after being in the area for the day, and while the food wasn't anything to brag about, the service was definitely worth a mention. We ordered a couple apps which were ok and the fish and chips, which I guess they consider, 'chef's features.' If you say so. But in actually, our server, Alexis, was the highlight of our visit. Coming in I actually wasn't aware of the hype or fame of this restaurant, and I'm glad I didn't have much expectations to begin with. The food overall was good but nothing to rave about. But I would definitely recommend the stewed corn and sweet potato soufflé, which are my favorites of the meal. However, the star of this entire meal was actually the service. A restaurant's service makes or breaks a dining experience, and here at Colonnade's I was lucky enough to be waited by Eric, a charming and wonderful waiter that really made our dinner exceptional. He kept refilling our bread basket, gave us his personal recommendations on how to best eat the fried chicken, dished out multiple bottles and tiny plates of condiments to pair with our entree sides and let us take a selfie with him. You can even find a pie combo named after him on the dessert menu - "Eric's signature sampler" (which unfortunately we didn't get because we were too stuffed), because he just loves giving out recommendations to customers. Decided to try this restaurant out due to reviews on best places to eat in Atlanta. My husband wanted fried chicken for his birthday dinner. Unfortunately, the service was terrible. The fried chicken was good, but our server did not make us feel welcome at all. We ordered sweet tea and questioned whether our tea we received was sweet or not. She reassured us that it was sweet tea in a gaslighting manner. It was definitely unsweet. The whole experience was unfortunate. It took 25 minutes for her to take our order, 15 minutes later she told us that they did not have two of the items we ordered and then was confused on what the kitchen had available. This place is a staple of Atlanta. It's celebrating it's 90th anniversary this year. I had to check this place out due to it being always so busy. We came in on a Sunday night during the playoffs so it was quite busy. I recommend trying to get sat in the main dining area as the other room seems not as welcoming. Just the impression we all felt when we sat down. Also note that they will not seat incomplete parties. When you arrive if there's a wait there is a bar w/ TVs you can relax in which is separate from the restaurant area. We started off w/ fried livers. If you've never had liver, I'd recommend trying them fried. It doesn't taste like chicken, but you do get some good flavoring. I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken (What We're Famous For, Your Choice Of Breast, Wing, Thigh and Leg, Or Two Breasts & Two Wings, Or Two Thighs & Two Legs) that comes w/ your choice of 2 sides which they allow a salad as a side. The fried chicken wasn't anything to write home about nor was the mashed potatoes. My friend ordered the Herb Roasted Chicken (Half Chicken With Your Choice Of Mushroom Gravy Or Barbeque Sauce) which was the winner between the two chicken dinners. The staff is very nice & helpful. I visited the Cheshire Bridge Rd Colonnade location for the first time January 2024. I ordered the fried chicken, green beans and mashed potatoes with gravy. In my opinion, the green beans tasted as if they were poured straight out of the can and warmed. No seasoning at all. The mashed potatoes were somewhat bland even with the gravy. I was really hoping that the fried chicken lived up to the hype based on some of the reviews. I was disappointed. The chicken wasn't dripping with vegetable oil like some restaurants fried chicken but it was bland to say the least. Understandably, food prices have escalated since the Covid pandemic but I felt the quality of food did not amount to the prices they are charging. I have no complaints regarding the service. Everyone during my visit was friendly and attentive. Overall, I would say this restaurant is mediocre. The food isn't awful but it's nothing to rave about. Would I recommend it to friends and family? No. I feel there are better southern comfort restaurants in the Atlanta area that offer more bang for the buck. read more

As usual a great dinner! I had the pork chops, you get two so I get one fried to eat there and one grilled that I take home for the next day. I always get the side salad. It comes with sliced pickled beets that are sweet tasting. One of the best blue cheese dressings around. They have a great wedge salad too. I spent the entire flight from New York to Atlanta this morning with a man's hefty right thigh against my own. To be clear, this man was a stranger. And I did not appreciate his denim covered flesh pressed against me. On my right, I was repeatedly jostled by a man who wore a fanny pack and whose aroma was rather unpleasant (Aren't you glad you showered? Don't you wish everyone did?) By the time I reached Hartsfield-Jackson, I was sorely in need of personal space and some fried chicken to soothe my frazzled nerves. Ahoy, Kathleen M to the rescue! After fetching me outside door S-5 she swiftly transported me to the Colonnade Restaurant where I quickly forgot my frightful flight and chose to concentrate instead on my creamy macaroni and cheese and my hearty portion of chicken fried chicken (could there be anything better?) "Okay. WHO WANTS FRIED CHICKEN?" -- Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001) I've lived in Atlanta for most of the last 35 years and I just recently went to the Colonnade for the first time. Hard to believe, but true. Everyone I know has raved about this place for as long as I can remember. And It's AOK. Traditional Southern food, but sorry, Mary Mac's is still my Gold standard. My friends and I came in during early bird hours to take advantage of the special menu. Me - I wanted fried chicken or pork chops and the price was not a draw for me. I wanted what I wanted and was going to order it. The service was weird - we had made a reservation and were asked to follow the host (which we did) and then we were yelled at as she was not ready for us. Okay, maybe scolded was the better term. We went back to the front and waited. When we were asked to follow her again, we asked if she was sure. Yes, ok... We were shown to the back part of the restaurant and were seated at a larger table, but still small for the 9 of us. We looked over the menu and everyone wanted the early bird deal, so ordering was pretty easy. Since I wanted actual friend chicken (not the boneless with gravy that comes on the early bird menu), I opted for the regular dining room menu. For my sides, I got mashed potatoes and gravy and squash casserole. Personally, I was going to get a regular dessert, but our server kept me on the EB menu and only offered a brownie or ice cream. This was pretty annoying. Ultimately, he saved me money and I should be thankful for that. But also, this was easier for him managing a group of people as well. My unsweet tea was mostly refilled and only refilled by sweet tea by mistake once. So for that I am mostly grateful. The chicken was good - slightly on the dry side, but the skin was good and flavorful. The corn muffins and rolls were to die for and definitely better than Mary Mac's and worth coming back for. The sides were also tasty - that squash casserole was just like my Granny's. The brownie was a throw away - could have been store bought. I have heard about this restaurant for years and because no one could decide on dinner, this restaurant was chosen. I will never go here again to eat. I enjoyed nothing. The restaurant is huge. There is a good size lounge area where the bar is located to wait for your table. It was nice and plush. Once seated, we placed our order quickly because everyone was hungry. Our food was received quickly. I order chicken livers and a shrimp plate. The chicken livers looked delicious when they arrived to the table but as they say, "Looks can be deceiving." These livers were so bland and I tried hot sauce and the dressing on the side to revive them, but they would not come back to life. My shrimp plate was just as bland. The potato salad side was the only decent thing out of my whole meal. The prices were average. My experience was very surprising because I had only heard great things about the Colonnade and the place was packed. I caved, I totally caved. And in the process I discovered my tolerance for healthy eating is about three weeks. It's the New Year and promises were made -- exercise more, eat healthier, more veggies, blah, blah, blah. But, if I saw one more organic baby green or carrot or skinless grilled chicken breast, I was going postal. What's a fella to do? Head to the Colonnade, of course, for something fried! And so I did. The place was jumping at 2pm on a Saturday as I waded through the usual Shady Rest nursing home crowd. It didn't take long to choose my artery clogging poison -- chicken fried steak. My mystery meat came thickly battered and deep fried with a bowl of pepper gravy. And like most portions at the Colonnade, it was huge, like the size of my face. My only regret? Running out of gravy before I could cover a yeast roll in it. But, it's okay. Balance has been restored and all is right with the world. Yeah, the Colonnade rocks. read more

To get a real feel for Atlanta, one must experience this venerable classic southern restaurant. Be prepared for fried as much of the menu follows that old southern cooking style, however there are enough other items (the pot roast comes to mind) for those who prefer their food without a layer of oily goodness. When asking about the veggies (there's a mess of them), ensure what you're interested in is fresh and you're good to go - my preference is the collards but that's just me. I ate there most recently a couple of nights ago - the special was the fish and chips. While the portion initially looked small (3 pieces of fish and a whole potato quartered lengthwise), I still left extremely sated and very full. It may have been the strawberry shortcake though - this is the best I've ever had, bar none. I think it's the heavy slab of Greenwood vanilla bean ice cream under the fresh-baked cake, or maybe the whip cream? It's hard to pin down, but fat-to-sweet ratio is spot-on. The restaurant is a bit hard to find - it's on Cheshire Bridge nestled between one of those nude model "clubs" on the left and across the street from some huge bar with oil derrick looking things. Kudos to the proprietor for the new sign (it used to be this hard-to-see white sign with the name in block letters) - the new sign is beautiful, with a good balance of contrasting neon and letters more appropriate to the style of the place - it could have been 1.5 to 2x bigger though as it has to compete with all the other signs along that strip. The new neon on the building itself (by the entrance) is also quite striking. For ambiance, the restaurant is nothing special - the paintings of hunting scenes on the walls only add to the southern feel of the restaurant. Although this may not be every one's cuppa - it's certainly not the tired brass-and-fern formula of most tasteless chain restaurants. They offer a sort of "happy hour" slot during the week where some of the menu items are offered with a small dessert at a fixed price - a real bargain for those of you so minded. You'll have to call as I haven't been able to make it during those times (5 to 7 maybe?). The restaurant is cash only but they do have a convenient ATM in the foyer - just be prepared. read more

Want to step back in time to dine at a place that hasn't been updated in 30 years (check), eat above average cafeteria-like food (check), and stand in a line to pay for your bill at an old ass register after getting money from the ATM because they only accept cash (check). I had high hopes for this place because I heard great things about it and it's often compared to Mary Mac's. But this place definitely fails in comparison to MM. We tried the fried chicken, grilled fish, rice with chicken gravy, collards, and sweet potatoes. While the portions were extremely generous, the food severely lacked seasoning and flavor. On the bright side, the waitress was really good and aimed to please. In terms of eating here again, I've fulfilled my curiosity and will not be back! read more

It's been a while since I visited the Colonnade (or as my friends call it, the Colon-aid.) We had a party to attend in the area, so we decided to dine 50s-style. Alas, it seems that even the immutable can change. The menu has shrunk. Oh, it's still plenty big, but they've removed some dishes and that includes my beloved lamb shank. Ivan had a little lamb, but now it's gone to that great kitchen in the sky. Sniff. But they've replaced it with kangaroo. Crikey! So no lamb, but 'roo as well as pork loin. Given enough time, they might put the entire roster of WInnie the Pooh on the menu. "Waiter, I'll have the Rabbit Fricassee and the lady will have an order of Braised Depressed Blue Donkey in a port reduction." Nice. I didn't order the 'roo when I was there. I opted for the "knuckle sandwich," a twist on an old fashioned lobstah roll. Instead of a potato hot dog bun, lobster claw meat is put on a foccaio bread, covered in herbed mayo and grilled tomatoes and scallions. Good recipe, but the execution could have been better since the taste of lobster meat was completely hidden by the other ingredients. Apparently, Guy "Off the Hook" Fieri loved the thing since it's listed on the menu as "As seen on the Food Network." For the love of Tony Bourdain, that freakin' Guy, uh, guy has been EVERYWHERE which frightens me beyond belief. But unlike that doofus, I wasn't as impressed with the sandwich as I'd hoped. But for $15 including a side, it was still worth the try. Still, some things haven't changed too much at the Colonnade. Still the home of the "Grays and the Gays". They still are cash only. Came here around 6pm with a party of 7. Wow, this place is senior citizen central, where all the cool old people hang out (lol). They don't seat anyone until everyone in their party shows up. The man at the front was very welcoming and friendly. This place started to get packed when we got there, perhaps because of their happy hour special that was $13 for endless rolls and corn bread, an entree, salad or 2 sides, drink, and a dessert. What. A. Steal. Before being seated, we were sitting at the waiting area and looked over the menu, along with the specials for the day. The happy hour menu included many different options including southern fried chicken (popular) and southern fried pork chops (delicious!). I ordered the southern fried pork chops with mashed potatoes/gravy and sweet potato fries (yeah, potato overload). I wouldn't get the mashed potatoes again, but I would definitely get the sweet potato fries again because they were so fresh and crispy. A lot of people recommended the sweet potato souffle, which I heard was one of the best sides. I was surprised to see that they had canned peaches with cheese and pears with cottage cheese as a side. They had a lot more sides that I was not familiar with. Learned a few new things while looking at the menu. :) I was so stuffed, and I had leftovers for a whole new meal (which I took to-go). But of course desserts were next. We had a choice between homemade brownie with whip cream on top, vanilla or peppermint ice cream. I went with the brownie and it was alright. WOW! The food here is great! My partner and I came here on a complete whim this past Saturday afternoon. This was our first time here and we didn't really know what to expect, because of the varied reviews. The restaurant had a decent crowd and we waited less than 5 minutes to be seated at a table by the pleasant hostess. Our waitress, Sarah, was great and you can tell she really enjoys her job. She was funny, made great suggestions on the menu, and kept our glasses of sweet tea (or "Southern wine," as she called it) filled. What we ordered: ENTREE 1- FAMOUS Southern Fried Chicken (2 breasts, 2 wings) Sweet potatoes Macaroni and cheese Celery dressing ENTREE 2- Fried Chicken Livers October Beans Sweet Potatoes The meal was accompanied with a bread basket, which consisted of white and wheat rolls, and cornbread muffins. The food was great and the portions were HUGE. The fried chicken was literally the best I ever had in Atlanta. We love all the regular dishes(turkey din, awesome fried chicken, prime rib, seafood) and their Specials are always amazing- schnitzel so thin and light, chicken parm, so wonderful. I came here for some fried chicken shortly after I arrived in Atlanta. My friend and I split their four piece fried chicken plate with sides of collard greens and mac and cheese. The chicken was pretty tasty! They nailed the salt/seasoning, and I found myself wishing for more batter. The collards were nothing notable, and neither was the mac and cheese. They were generic, verging on lackluster. The biggest disappointment was the coconut cream pie. The crust was soggy and the filling was just okay. We didn't bother finishing it. I honestly wouldn't come back if I were in town...I'd check out South City Kitchen (which had a ridiculous wait for a Saturday lunch, so we never got to try it). read more

I really don't know if I can describe how good the food was last night. I actually had a dream last night that I was floating in a cloud of their delicious yeast rolls. Seriously! To start, the menu is pretty diverse with all kinds of entrees and a ton of veggies. The dessert menu looked divine, but I was too full from chicken and rolls to even think about dessert. Maybe next time...but that's what I always say. I ordered fried chicken which comes with 4 pieces (all white or dark meat or mixed), stewed corn and pole beans. On the real, that fried chicken almost made me cry tears of joy. I was just so dang happy with every bite I took. I just wanted it to last forever. The pole beans were flavored very nicely and the corn was fresh and tasty. It just didn't seem like enough though. My other dining guests ordered a variety of things including calf liver, pork chops and fried shrimp along with rutabagas, turnip greens, and black-eyed peas. The table was super quiet which meant it must have all been good. The pork chops seemed to be a huge hit as everyone sampled a piece and shook their heads in delight. Service was friendly and attentive. Overall, another good dining experience at The Colonnade. Can't wait to go back. read more

The food is great and so southern with wide array of choices for everyone. We have 4 generations that have been coming to this restaurant for years. Fried chicken and pork chops are AMAZING! Husband comes for chicken livers -like his dad. Our kids are adults and love the vegetable assortment too. Prime rib and catfish are incredible. They take advantage of seasonal vegetables too. Full bar and wine are also really a nice touch. Atlanta's 2nd oldest restaurant Jasmine is our favorite server-smart and so great at everything ! I've been going here for nearly 50 years at least a few times a year at minimum. It is very consistent in quality which isn't necessarily the absolute best food or most inspired or unique recipes, but it's always good. The servers and staff stay for years and decades. We do notice some differences post-pandemic, but nothing too drastic. Their cocktails are reasonably priced and strong. Some things like the macaroni and cheese are just standard frozen Stouffer's style and not really that good. I don't recommend it unless you really like frozen type. That being said I don't think much else is frozen like that. They do an excellent trout. Excellent fried shrimp. Rutabaga. Marion Salad. Most of the vegetable sides are good albeit rather basic and bland in preparation. At Colonnade you're not going to get anything innovative or trendy or heavily seasoned. But that's ok. It's an experience to dine there as most of the clientele has been going for 40-80 years. What they lack in recipe innovation and menu updates they make up for in genuine reliable consistency and overall great quality with most everything they serve. The fries were oddly not good the last time we went. It was an obvious deviation from the decades worth of fries we've consumed there. read more

Truly an atlanta institution amd rightly so. Waiting in the bar the drinks were generously poured This time our table had fried chicken and the liver with onions. Dinner rolls, as always, were soft and warm allowing the butter to melt. The chicken was crispy and moist and the liver and onions were cooked to perfection. Service is always top-tier and parking is never a hassle and I highly recommend this for a casual evening of having fun and eating great food. read more

I wasn't impressed! A combination of people overhyping and the food was not spectacular or good, it was just ok. I had the chicken fried chicken my sauce was bland and my okra was not fried all the way.my wife had the fried chicken. I tasted and it was not worth the price. We never fail to be amazed by the Colonnade. Same old good good, same old good crowd, same old good service, same refusal to accept credit cards. We love it! It's truly one of the Atlanta classics, a more than half-century-old landmark that keeps chugging. Honestly, it's better and more reliable than Mary Macs or any other meat-and-two/three type place we know of around the city. And could everyone please dispense with the cracks about the age of the customers? Yes, they tend toward the over-60 set, but they're friendly and don't deserve some of the childish put-downs you can read here. Favorites? Yeah, the fried chicken is mighty good. So are most of the sides; they know how to do mashed potatoes and green beans. And not sure there's anywhere else around where you can still order tomato aspic salad (one of my mother's favorites). The servings are generous, the desserts are sweet, and so is the ice tea. What you shouldn't skip -- unless you're a teetoatler -- is the bar. It's not only a place to wait while you're waiting for a table, but they make up some pretty powerful drinks. We had a Bloody Mary the other day that was loaded with vodka, a better drink than you'll find at a lot of pricey bars around town. Sundays are especially busy, long lines almost a certainty unless you arrive when they open. Whenever you get there, however, we think you're in for a really good treat. read more
