We had a Memorial Luncheon at Colletti's. The food was just terrific. We had minestrone soup, chicken lemone, Italian sausage with peppers and onions (they added pasta at our request - no charge - very nice), roasted potatoes and vegetables. Dessert was tira misu and Italian cookies
This was the first memorial/funeral luncheon we had planned, I had spoken with several different people at Colletti's in the time leading up to the lunch. I told them several times that I just had no idea how many people might show up, I asked them how to handle this. I was assured several times that they do these kinds of luncheons all the time and they "will accommodate". I did speak to the owner over the phone as well, he asked if I would have more than 100 people I said no. He said then there would be no problem. I felt nervous, but reassured because they told me they do this all the time and can accommodate. The only number that I ever discussed with them was when I was asked if it would be more than 100 people.
I called the day before the luncheon, just to try to finalize plans. They did ask me to have the funeral director call them and give them an estimate. I explained that we did not have a funeral director, this was just a memorial service, no funeral home involved. They said I could call from the church with an estimate. I tried to guess, but I had no idea who was coming and who wasn't. I had been told as long as it was under 100, they could accommodate. I did not make the call, because I felt sure it would be under 100.
We got to Collettis and they had a room set up for us for 40 people. One of the servers was very rude, and said very loudly several times (using finger quotations) "we were told 40 people". I am not sure who told them that, but it wasn't me. It was very chaotic for a while, people standing in the hall, wondering what to do, where to sit and I couldn't find anyone to speak to. Eventually we ended up being split into two rooms, which was not ideal, but we are a pretty flexible group and we went along with it fine. It was just upsetting that initially some of staff came across as quite rude, this was a memorial luncheon, emotions are high and a little kindness would go a long way. I am sure the serving staff was upset and frustrated, but reacting rudely doesn't help matters on either end. In the end the server who was very loud and rude, calmed down and was pleasant.
I do have to say something about the hostess though. The guests who were put into a different room had no soup spoons, I searched for one of our servers and I could not find any of them. I looked around for a staff member to ask for help, I saw the hostess at her stand. She was on her phone texting, but she stopped when I approached. I asked her if she could help me, the guests in one of the rooms had no soup spoons. She told me to get my server. I replied that I had looked, but could not find them. She then said that she would have to go look now, and she was not supposed to leave her post. Wow.
At the end of the lunch, we went to the office to settle up. The owner immediately started talking about the wrong counts given to them, how "shocked" he was to see all the people in the hallway and how "lucky" I was that he had enough crew. No "hello" no "nice to meet you". I tried to speak, but I was told "we aren't going to be pointing fingers", he showed me his book which showed our luncheon to have between 50 to 65 people. He also said they can always add another 20 to 25 people to the numbers, that is how they prepare for funeral/memorial luncheons. Well, I wanted to ask him - that if the booking said 50 to 65 people - why was the room set up for 40? If they were prepared for 50 to 65 people as THEY wrote on our booking than we should have had a room big enough to accommodate our numbers as we ended up with a total of 93, so 65 plus an extra 25 - (as he said that they are always ready to add 20 to 25) we would be in the ball park. However, when I tried to speak, the owner would just talk over me. In the end, he finally said "sorry for your loss".
Thank you Collettis for the delicious buffet, our guests really enjoyed the food, and thank you to the hard working staff that figured it all out and tried their best to get everyone taken care of. read more
