Yellow Rose is CASH ONLY! They don't make diners like this anymore. Beautiful, old school breakfast spot with an incredibly friendly staff and cheap, delicious food. I got the steak skillet, which initially felt a bit small for me but actually was incredibly filling. With some salt, pepper and the homemade hot sauce, it was perfect. My friend and I shared some banana pancakes, which were also delicious. The toast came with some kind of fig jam which I do not try but my friend did and demanded I mention how good it was. So, the fig jam is good. A delicious glimpse into America's past, places like Yellow Rose are a dying breed and deserve to be supported. read more

Such a small town homey feel and friendly diner! Place is pretty small and they were busy but we were able to snag two seats at the counter. Everyone seemed to know each other, and our waitress made us feel like we were part of the family. Listening to the banter between locals and staff was pretty entertaining during our meal. Food was good, you can tell it was fresh. Only thing that caught us off guard was the CASH ONLY sign on the wall halfway through our meal. We will be sure to be better prepared next time! read more

We went in around 10 on President's Day and got the last two tables to push together for our group of 4. I've been here a few times and would love to revisit. It's a homey, friendly place with great food and excellent service.

We take each other out to restaurant of their choice for birthdays, usually someplace fancy, celebratory, that we wouldn't normally go to. So she was surprised when I said Yellow Rose on Elston. See, I'm 73, not complaining but could be in better health, so I'm doing things always meant to do. in the late 1970's and 80's I worked down the street. Always attracted to it but i was still in stumble out of bed and get to work last minute years, and the guys, from top to bottom, drank lunch at the Irish bar down the street. They are a breakfast - lunch place. So this many years later I wanted to check out the corned beef hash they've been known for in recent years. It has a parking lot, looks like as many spots as tables! Everyone from staff to patrons were very friendly and helped with doors for my lady and walker. When people came in needing a larger table and walker then got in the way, the busboy moved it and later brought it back to her before we had a chance to ask. The menu looks great, I'd try most of it if we lived closer. Prices are about normal but quality or size is better on most dishes from what I saw. We just don't eat a lot anymore but their combos, omelets, and stuff all looked so tempting and well worth the money. But she was full on the biscuits and gravy. We are big fans of biscuits and gravy from a lot of travel in the south. It's not bad for Chicago, no doubt nice homemade biscuits. I had to try the corned beef hash, A side and one egg over easy on top, a large OJ and coffee and I was full. I cooked breakfast in New Orleans in my youth, The egg was perfect which wont impress most people but over easy... And a side of corned beef was plenty for me. And yes, this is not your run of the mill corned beef hash. Not some kind of mush with potato squares that you get even in most restaurants. Plenty of lean corned beef chopped and shredded and looking more like a pulled pork ind of thing but with perfectly soft but firm potatoes clearly cut fresh, a few specks of red bell pepper and onion and a whole lot of natural flavor. But remember they only take cash, Definitely recommended for a working persons hearty breakfast or lunch for the neighborhood, a great friendly place for retirees too. Just really good truly home cooked diner food at a fair price. read more

A classic diner, with great food at a very reasonable price. It's a smaller place so there is just one waitress per day. They are all wonderful. There are a whole lot of regulars that show up nearly everyday, including me. They have a meal advertised on a board outside the restaurant, 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, hash browns, and toast and coffee. "The sidewalk" with tax included for$10. They have homemade corned beef sandwich's that are lean and stacked high. Corned beef hash, homemade, that is awesome. It's a smaller place with 4 booths and three tables plus two counters. It's classic old school diner and the people that work there are likely to become your friend or at least remember your name. I give it 2 thumbs up. read more

This is home! Whenever I come back to Chicago to visit I have a list of friends I have to visit, a couple restaurants I might go to and ALWAYS Yellow Rose. At this point in my life I have given corned beef a chance at many places, I'm done, theres no point. The only place to eat corned beef and hash is here. We just got home from today's brunch at Yellow Rose Cafe and they made our day! This is our absolute favorite place to have Saturday brunch. The owner puts his heart and soul into the food and you can tell. He pays attention to detail, flavor & quality. And the prices are ridiculously low!Every single thing we've had here is FRESH, FROM SCRATCH & DELICIOUS! My outstanding chicken melt with bacon, cheese, avocado, lettuce and tomato on sourdough was today's special and came with fries, drink & tomato basil soup (Heirloom tomatoes are from his garden) for a super great price and my boyfriend's corned beef hash was everything and more than what Chicago's Best portrayed on TV. Lori is a great server and had us laughing. They're doing an excellent job providing customers with delicious food & service during COVID crisis by practically safety & social distancing guidelines. They're wearing masks and gloves, enforcing customers to wear their masks when inside the cafe and when engaging with staff outdoors, l hand sanitizer is provided, they have a thick plastic shield up where you pay and have tables outside in the shade as well as tables socially distanced on the inside. This is a small, Mom and Pop, truck stop type diner that has a high recurring customer base. I read the reviews on Yelp and decided to try it though I think my wife may have brought us something home from here before. It was originally recommended by a lady at another restaurant nearby. The dining area is small but there was seemingly enough seating for everyone and there wasn't a line to wait for seating either. I actually got my food to go. There is plenty of parking - either in the parking lot behind the building or on the street (Elston). The place seems family owned and seems to be ran like a well-oiled machine. The staff is friendly, accommodating and patient. The woman who was serving me gave me a menu and allowed me to look it over until she could tell I had made a decision all while she juggled multiple dishes and plates in each arm. Prices are VERY reasonable and the helpings are a little larger than average. I got the 3,3,3 which was 3 eggs, 3 sausage links, your choice of 3 pancakes or hashbrowns (I got hashbrowns) with a side of wheat toast. My wife got the ham off the bone, eggs, pancakes and hash browns. That was only $18 and some change. They put plenty of napkins, utensils, and condiments in the bag. The food was tasty! Good, old fashioned breakfast food. I've had better breakfast (that certainly isn't a negative thing against them since I've eaten almost everywhere) but this definitely is a diner I'd come back to. The wait time was a little longer than usual for this kind of diner. I waited about 20 minutes for just 2 to go trays. They could use some extra staffing - especially on the weekends. It wasn't terribly long but longer than usual. All in all, a solid diner with great customer service and tasty, old fashioned breakfast food. Tip: This place is CASH ONLY. Which by the way, I really hate. I know places like this want to keep that classic feel of just handing them raw money but it's an inconvenience these days.
