I'm sad to leave a one star review because the burger was actually quite good. Unfortunately everything else about the experience was miserable. Our waitress on Wednesday night (Debbie?) was rude while taking orders despite being us polite and respectful, hard to find when we needed refills, napkins, and the bill, and then slow to get back to us even though there was only a few people besides us. A hidden gem. Tiered seating. Open concept. Service was impeccable. Food was amazing. We shared a cup the shrimp bisque. Big mistake. We should have gotten a bowl each. I think they put crack in it. Just kidding. There is something in it that was amazing. Can't pin point the special ingredient but I confiscated his cup when he was half way through. I then ordered the rib special and my BF had the beef stroganoff. The ribs were super tender and the sauce was delicious. The sides complimented the main meal. My BF said it was probably the best beef stroganoff he had ever had. Then we got the chocolate cake. I was mad that I forgot to take pictures of the rest. We were craving wings and saw that Highway House opened at 10. We arrived to a fairly empty restaurant but given the time we didn't think anything of it. We were greeted and handed breakfast menus. I asked if that was the only menu available and the server asked the cook if we could do lunch. They said yes and we were given the lunch menus or more so the lunch menu was thrown on our table. That being said, the wings are excellent. Crispy and decently sauced. We ordered the honey siracha and buffalo wings. We also ordered the corned beef egg rolls. They had a sweetness to them that we didn't love. It's a cool set up that you could tell is an old house. Our server was rude to another coworker by spouting off commands and when she was confused the server goes, "you need to wake up." The other woman didn't even do anything to warrant that. Coworker rudeness is really unnecessary so that depleted one star, another star was taken for the sweetness of an egg roll. I do want to come back for the wings again. This wasn't a horrible experience by any means but some little upgrades can go a long way. read more

We walked in to find the manager/owner (Lisa) behind the bar berating the bartender in front of customers. I've been here before and have seen her frequently snap or yell at her staff in public. Very unprofessional. We sat at the bar, asked a few questions and was treated with the same rudeness. She barked her answers at us and was so difficult that we walked out without ordering. It was around 7pm on a Thursday night and the place was empty, maybe she's why. Very nice patio, it was a perfect night to eat outside. We were a little early for dinner 5 ish, so it wasn't very busy. I had a burger as usual, and I must say it was excellent! Definitely top 5 on my list of great burgers maybe top 3. (I had the pecan burger) The service was also great, I didn't get the waitresses name, but she was on it, great job by a professional. They have a nice outside patio area. When we were there it was the perfect day to sit outside. Parking around the place (on the same side and across the street; on the surrounding neighborhood streets) appears to all be free, and is pretty plentiful given the area of town. We visited pre-pandemic. We had to wait to get menus. As in, after sitting there about 5 minutes, I was about to go in to request menus when he came out with water and menus. He seemed to be the only one there so I guess that's understandable, and he was attentive otherwise, so no harm no foul. The food was ok. I had the taco salad. It was served on a plate, of course, with the taco bowl on top of it... and the plate, under the taco bowl, had a lot of water under it. The bottom of the bowl was very soggy as a result, of course. Kind of unfortunate. I wouldn't totally object to giving it another try, particularly if I started visiting the Chicago School of Woodworking for open shop. read more

I've lived by here for years and finally had the chance to come in to try it. It's not fancy or anything but it also has a patio, the bar also has older feel to it. I just ended up getting a burger and a couple beers, all very good. I always have good service from the friendly neighborhood bartender that I've ran into at 2 other bars. Seems like some servers cook and bartend. Service is all over the place.. Just a complete mess for what they're charging. Started out ordering an appetizer. Our server asked us if we need plates for our appetizer. He was very hesitant to bring us some. I asked him to please bring appetizer plates. Two of the plates were dirty and not washed from a previous customer. Getting ketchup and salt was like a mission. They won't bring a bottle back of ketchup to the table. It's a complete joke. Waiting for drinks was terrible. Our server was stuck bartending and I waited about 15 minutes for another drink. Food was just ok. For what they are charging I expected a lot more. (Didn't notice till a day later) No beer or wine menu but the server will tell you what they offer. Great service ! Bruschetta with goat cheese and olives was very tasty. I recommend to try. We got one of the house burgers and although it was good, barely any burger when cut in half. Ratios were off, mostly bread no meat. Here is another jewel in the northwest side of Chicago. Let me start by saying that they took us in on a Sunday after a 17U championship baseball game, 30 minutes before closing and fed the entire team and parents, and did it with a smile. Our waitress did it all by herself smiling while dishing out half a dozen pizzas , and at least a half a dozen other dishes not to mention countless beers. We sat in the outdoor patio, which we thought would help them as they could clean the restaurant while we ate outdoors. Not ideal to a single waitress as it was the furthest area from the kitchen! But she was a real trooper and made us all feel at home and comfortable. The food was great and all the players and parents were more than happy with their choices. Parents received the right amount of 'hydration' as well. I ordered the Highway Hangover Burger and it was delicious! The Highway House Burger, grilled Ribeye and Pot Roast sandwich were also big hits with the group. Will definitely add to the rotation! Just moved to the area and drove by this place and had been meaning to go so was excited when I was able to stop in on my day off for lunch and a couple of beers. The patio from my drive by and subsequent visit is awesome. Unfortunately that's about the best thing about this place. It's very dirty inside and not like a "dive bar" Dirty just not clean and really in need of some repairs and maintenance. The top of the draft box was covered in dust as were most of the glasses I could see behind the bar. When looking around you just get the feel the place isn't cleaned regularly. I'm not really sure what is going on with the menu, seems confused with no real identity. Feels like someone grabbed random menu item dishes out of a hat. I ordered the SW egg rolls as nothing else seemed worth ordering. Much like a Chinese restaurant they came out in less than 5 minutes haphazardly thrown on a small plate, liquid coming out of them as though they had been heated in a microwave....very hot.....very mushy and the sauce served with them was room temperature and somehow made it even less appetizing......totally lacked flavor. As for the beer selection, not much of one. Out of the 5 or 6 beers they had 2 were Octoberfest like beers and, 2 wheat ales (not that warm yet) just NO selection, not an IPA, no pale ales, no hazy IPA.....bottle and can selection not worth comments here...I drank my two beers reluctantly ate my egg rolls and was on my way. I so wanted to like this place as it's not too far from where I live but won't be back. Maybe the restaurant caters to a different kind of clientele? Highway House is a hidden gem in the neighborhood! The patio seating is plenty, outside dog/kid friendly and the servers have wonderful attitudes that make you feel welcomed! An owner that jumps in to help as tables started filling up was refreshing to see! I had the Seafood Tacos that were delicious! A bit too messy for me but for sure worth it! Highway House is located near Nagle and Northwest Highway. They have a pretty larger outdoor seating area, and that was what drew me in. Inside. the dining area is decent, with the bar being the highlight. I sat outside, listening to some country music playing in the background, on a warm Chicago Saturday evening. Although this place is located on Northwest Highway, which can be busy, on this particular evening, it wasn't too bad and wasn't too loud or noisy. I ordered the grilled cod tacos, which were phenomenal. An order comes with three. The cod was flavorful and flaky. The tacos came with a slice of avocado each, and some pico. It also came chipotle mayo, which I got on the side, but I love me some chipotle mayo. The tortilla chips that came with it was OK. It honestly wasn't my favorite, and some of them had a hint of staleness and less crunch. I asked the server for some hot sauce, and she presented to me a picnic basket of em. There was a lot to choose from. Food was great, service was good, andd the overall experience, I would give it 3.5 stars, but I'm going to round-up. If you're looking for some decent food, with a great outdoor seating area, definitely give Highway House a go. BATHROOM REVIEW: Located in the back, the bathrooms were single-person bathrooms. Inside, it was surprisingly spacious. Where do I even begin with the place? Everyone in my family is obsessed but I couldn't dislike it more. First time I went we sat inside and the bartender was our server. I don't remember her name but I'm pretty sure she was a server or manager. I wish I would have written this review then but my family convinced me not to. My mom and I went and split a burger. With our burger we wanted raw onion and the lady was so rude about getting it and basically threw a plate of raw onions at us after having to ask for it 3 times. Food was fine-nothing to write home about. They were out of most ciders and didn't have any seltzers. Just an overall underwhelming experience. Fast forward to last night. Went in again with my mom and husband. A bunch of my aunts and uncles had been there earlier in the day and we missed them. We sat on the patio, which was so nice. Kami K. was our server. Same song and dance with the drinks. We asked what ciders they had and she said Mageners on tap. Me and my husband ordered that. She came back with angry orchard in a bottle and didn't even realize she brought us something we didn't order. We ordered burger sliders and chicken tenders and she brought us one single bbq chicken slider and said that's what we ordered. We ended up getting our food but it took forever to get refills and again was just not a good experience. They were not that busy. Also if you can't remember the order maybe write it down?
