I am not a breakfast person. This is due to I prefer gym time vs breakfast.. My friend finally convinced me to come out for breakfast, so I left it up to her to find a cute and yummy café This place is adorable. It is so shabby chic. It has inside and outdoor seating. This is an American breakfast and brunch restaurant. It appears to be a local neighborhood café. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and seated outside. It was fairly hot outside and there is not a fan. It also took a very long time to get service. Once our waitress got to us, and we placed our order. I think it took at least 20 minutes. Keep in mind that the restaurant closes at 2pm. Once the food got to us, we had to chow down quickly as we only had 15-20 minutes. I also was not aware I was in a scarfing down contest. We felt extremely rushed.The waitress quickly gave us our bill I did ordered the Fried Chicken Benedict for $16. The dish was large in portion. My chicken was still moist and juicy. The flavor was divine and it served with side of potato hash and homemade buttermilk. Overall, it was not the pleasant or welcoming experience I had expected. Colette is a cute location in a somewhat sketchy & deserted area. There is a huge parking lot so you don't even have to worry about parking. You do have to worry (sometimes) about the seating. You order at the counter and it's self seating. If you have a large party, like us, you are limited in your options. There is an indoor seating option. Indoors is cute. It has a clean look and there is a sign "Colette" in a elegant font. I prefer sitting outside so that's where I tried to find seating. Outside is more rustic. There is a vine barrier. The tables are either the benches or metal. There are a lot of options to sit though for smaller parties. Service was good! The staff was very friendly. At times you may have to wait since the location is big to cover. Esp with the limited staff. Food was good! The menu is limited, but everything there looks delicious. The crispy chicken is ok but missing something. The crispy beef noodles were not good at all. The calamari had a good fry on them but that was about it. I asked about one of the dishes and the waiter told me it wasn't worth it. The dim sum was ok. Overall I like this place. It's got good quality food and a nice staff. The menu is pretty limited, but they cover the basics (a few savories, a few sweets) + they have mimosas. I've had a few things from their menu. The standouts are definitely the Fried Chicken Benedict and the Breakfast Burrito, but nothing i've had has been bad. I think some of the negatives here are that they always seem to have a lot of tables reserved that nobody sits on, and the service is kind of slow, but all else is pretty good. Great food, abominable service. If you come, be prepared to wait, for everything, even paying the bill. The food is wonderful! Don't order anything that you know what it is, order things that are new and different, you won't be disappointed. Buns - delicious! Black truffle mushroom noodles - outstanding! We'll-done beef vermicelli - everyone wanted seconds. King paper chicken - mediocre (order things you don't see elsewhere) Service was lacking at both ends. The lady who seated us was very short with us since we weren't ready to order immediately, and it took us a solid half hour to get and pay our check at the end. And the restaurant gets very VERY loud. Fine when you're eating but terrible when you have nothing to do at the end of your meal but talk. I don't know why this place is rated so high. It's literally one step higher than Panda Express. The food was mediocre and service was snobbish. Firstly, we made a reservation for a celebratory dinner. We get there and are told our table won't be ready for a half hour. The manager told us that the reservation means you have priority over walkins, but it doesn't mean that you actually have a table at that time. I've never heard anything like that. A reservation is a reservation. We finally get our table after waiting a half an hour. It's a cold evening and there's not enough heaters in the outdoor area. Their indoor area is booked for a private party. The servers are rushing us to order telling us they're too busy with the large party, so we should order quickly. Our food came out at varying times. Appetizers and main dishes were randomly brought out. The staff was stressed and unfriendly. The food was mediocre, no exceptional flavor, and under salted. They kept stressing that the large private party was throwing them off. So here's an idea, Colette, don't have a private party on a Saturday evening that takes up your entire inside and disrupts your normal guests. This was our second time here. The first time was not exceptional either, but we thought we'd give them another try. I don't think we'll be going back. I really don't understand the hype. I came here for dinner since I heard the chef from Embassy Kitchen is now at Colette. It was very yummy, nostalgic Cantonese food. The Black Truffle Chicken Salad was refreshing, flavorful, with a reasonable serving portion. The Crispy Stuffed Chicken is a classic, and I loved the crunchy, crispy texture of it along with the Golden Yolk Fried Pumpkin. We did pre order the curry Crab and winter melon soup which were both outstanding. I will be trying the dim sum next time. read more

I do not understand how this place has 4 stars on Yelp. I want to preface this with the fact that eating out is not easy for us! I have two kids (my daughter aged 2 and my son 4 months), so between juggling nap times and what-not, we don't have the opportunity to eat at restaurants very often. I had some family in town, so we thought we'd go out for brunch together. Choosing Colette was a miss. I was incredibly disappointed. We will not be returning, and I would not recommend coming here. When we ordered, I specifically asked that my daughter's chocolate chip pancakes be brought out first. Her dish came out DEAD LAST, when we were almost all done with the rest of our food (which, by the way, took over 30 minutes to arrive). The waiters told us that apparently, the kitchen ran out of chocolate chips, so the owner had to go out and buy some, which is why her dish took nearly 40 minutes to arrive. That's ridiculous. They should've been upfront about the fact that they were out of chocolate chips and offered to provide plain pancakes or sub the chocolate chips with something else. I got the chilaquiles, and they were pathetic. The egg-to-chip ratio was extremely disappointing. I think I literally had 1 egg for my entire dish. Needless to say, even though I ate everything, I left the restaurant feeling hungry. My husband and sister each got the salmon Benedict. The eggs are cooked in some pre-formed mold or something, because they were weirdly perfectly round. The yolk inside was watery and there wasn't much yolk at all. The flavor was bland. My sister asked for her potatoes to be substituted with French fries, and they messed up and gave her potatoes. They brought fries out after the fact when we complained. My dad got the loco moco and, having lived in Honolulu for two years, I can tell you it was a joke. The loco moco came out with NO gravy, and we had to ask the waiter to bring it out after the fact. The gravy that was brought out was a bunch of watery sautéed mushrooms. My dad was extremely disappointed and, like I said, since I have definitely had GOOD loco moco, this was an embarrassment. My mom got an omelette and it was as dry as a flip flop sandal. You could slap someone across the face with it. Don't waste your time with this place. The food was extremely disappointing. read more

Food price varies a lot but with the cheaper side, ~20ish dollars, it's still pretty affordable. Food tastes, at least the seafood fried noodles and laksa seafood noodle, was a little too bland for my tastes. It feels too watered down compared to traditional Cantonese cuisine (can't speak much to the laksa noodles though). The oolong tea was also very bland, tea leaves tasted overboiled with too much water. Nice service from waiter and nice outdoor patio vibe though. The poached eggs were done just right too. We also ordered the Collette frittata which was the only signature item on the menu, but it missed my expectations. The frittata was quite dry and the flavors from the ingredients really didn't come through. They used too much potatoes in my opinion, and it was just barely warm. I guess when they have to heat up previously prepared foods, I would have to expect this... =( The service was good at our table. Eventually, I was sold on Colette by the raving reviews that my fellow yelp friends left on yelp about this place. Was my experience worth another visit? Lets find out! Location/Parking: Located on the NW corner of Michillinda Ave. and Sierra Madre Blvd.. Plenty of parking that is shared with other small businesses. Ambiance/Decor: Ambiance is alright, but during peak times, it can get very noisy (combination of music and patrons conversing with their inside). Modern furnishings through out the restaurant and a neat outdoor patio to dine in. They also have a projector tv that was playing the movie, batman during our stay. Service: Our eating experience was had a rough start. Took about 15 minutes before a server tended (ask for drinks/ordering food) to us. Service did get better (staffer was friendly and attentive during the rest of our stay) even though the food took awhile to get to our table. It wasn't her fault. Food: We ordered two items: 1) Chicken Benedict ($12): Layers on layers on layers (two poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise sauce (top) on two pieces of chicken (middle) and served on homemade buttermilk biscuits. Surrounding the chicken benedict was a big portion of potato hash (filler). Everything was decent, but wished there was more of a chipotle taste on the hollandaise sauce. The chicken meat was flavorful, tender, and loved biting into the crunchy skin. I got tired of eating the potato hash after eating four or five. -Tip: Break the yoke for instant gratification! 2) Colette Frittata ($11): Consisted of a frittata (similar to a quicke, but without a crust) with crimini mushrooms, roasted cherry tomato, potato, and mixed greens. Thought the frittata was was uneventful. It was just okay. Thought the mixed greens with roasted cherry tomatoes was quite refreshing. Sunday Brunch always sounds like a good idea so we headed over to the sleepy, little corner restaurant off Michillinda Ave. It has a cute, neighborhood kind of feel and we were seated immediately. We split 3 dishes among us: Breakfast Quesadilla, Grilled Chicken and Brie Sandwich and Churro French Toast. With its thick-cut Brioche bread, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, and finished with fresh berries, the Churro French Toast was probably the best item we had. The bread had a nice crust on the outside and was pillowy soft on the inside with a light sprinkling of cinnamon to complement the sweet maple syrup. While I was excited for the Breakfast Quesadilla which included scrambled eggs, bacon, melted sharp cheddar cheese, Pico de Gallo & sour cream, it was pretty bland and lackluster. As for the sandwich, it had a generous amount of brie cheese which I enjoyed and the shoestring fries that came with it were pretty crispy and tasty. However, by the time it arrived at our table, the sandwich and fries were cold. I was more ehhh with the service than the food because the restaurant was incredibly busy (as expected with Sunday Brunch) with only 2 waitresses manning the floor. The review will be broken up in different categories: food, environment, service, price and overall thoughts. Food: Colette has a good size variety of food; not too many options, not too few. What stood out to me were the Southern Fried Chicken Benedict and Pain Perdue. Ive never had in my life until now fried chicken intertwined with a classic Benedict. The plate included buttermilk chicken, a poached egg, on an english muffin with Hollandaise sauce and a side of roasted potatoes. Although I felt the chicken was missing some stronger seasoning to call it Southern Fried Chicken, the piece was tender and crispy. The side of potatoes weirdly enough was something I wish I had more of. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. It had a hint of seasoning which made these bad boys delicioso! If you know me I need something sweet to end a savory adventure. The Pain Perdue is basically thick cut brioche toast sprinkled with cinnamon with a side of whip cream and berries. Very similar to french toast but fancier lol. I enjoyed the taste, wish I had more berries in ratio for the three slices of toast or maybe my girlfriend ate them all. smh. (4 stars) Environment: Colettes is located on the border of Pasadena and Sierra Madre at what looks to be a mini mall. The mini mall is not really appealing with what looks like a closed down hardware store, some salons, an animal hospital, donut shop, a catering company, etc. However because of this theres plenty of parking in the lot. Its located in a safe and upscale area. Colette has very minimalist interior setup. Nothing really stands out in the restaurant. I did like that had an outside with bistro lights; always a cute touch. ( 3 stars) Service: The service was okay. We were greeted and seated pretty quickly. Our waiter was friendly and apologized for the wait upon ordering our food. (3 stars) Price: The Southern Fried Chicken Benedict came up to about $16, the Pain Perdue was around $14. The food was good, and prices very comparable to other breakfast and brunch spots however I think it might be over priced. I do want to add that we currently in an inflation and the area is in an upscale so it does make sense. (3 stars) Overall Thoughts: Although a lot of my reviews were 3 stars, I have yet to try more items on their menu. Dined at this establishment for a party of 4 around 5PM... overall food wise- siu mai, truffle fried rice & the truffle noodles that we tried were good. However, service was minimal to none. Never checked up on, never asked if we needed a refill, and the moment I asked the waiter for soy sauce & ginger, he looked at me and said "I don't speak mandarin" and was about to walk away when I told him I said soy sauce and ginger... having to grab the check was also long process since we got it dropped off but took over 10 minutes to have it charged until we flagged someone over. I definitely recommend driving 15-20 minutes over to reputable dim sum restaurants in Monterey Park/SGV area without the heavy price tag Colette has. Average brunch spot. I came here on New Years Day and waited one hour to be seated meanwhile a lot of tables sat empty so I am assuming they were short-staffed.
