I was ecstatic to someone post pics of a very familiar crispy stuffed chicken. It's probably been close to 20 years since I last had it at Embassy kitchen and made reservations at Colette the next night for dinner. If you are interested in the crispy stuffed chicken, do reserve it ahead of time as they are still in a soft opening phase. We arrived early and was a bit surprised to only see another table or patrons for dinner. Glad the restaurant started filling up closer to 6. We ordered a bunch of items, most of which were good but was a bit disappointed with their dim sum dishes. Stuffed chicken wings - perfectly dried and stuffed with loh mai fan (糯米飯). Great appetizer to start the meal. Braised tofu w/mushrooms - super flavorful and pairs well with white rice. Golden pork trots - another perfectly fried dish but I recall this being better back in the day while dining at Embassy kitchen. Had a good amount of fried garlic on top but couldn't really taste much of the garlic. Crispy stuffed chicken - I think this was even better than I remember it being. Crispy chicken skin with shrimp paste in the middle. The sauce was good but I think I preferred this with the jiu yim (椒盐). Black truffle yi mein w/mushrooms - modern take on a traditional Cantonese dish. Enjoyed this one especially with a light truffle flavor. Stir fried asparagus - perfectly stir fried and seasoned. Har gow and siu mai - wasn't super impressed with the flavor of either one but was shocked at the size of each. Salted egg custard bao - had high hopes and really was expecting a better way to end our meal. Not really sure how to explain but the custard seemed a bit dry to me. Decent flavor but the texture seemed off to me. Overall an enjoyable dinner and will be back soon to try other dishes. read more

Colette is a sneaky Chinese restaurant with a non-Chinese name on the border of Pasadena and Sierra Madre. We came here right before Lunar New Year 2023 and had an amazing lunch. We pre-ordered two off-menu specials. When they are off-menu, they really mean it. I had to screen shot Instagram stories and reels to figure out what was available. The first was the Lobster Sticky Rice and the second was a Wintermelon Soup served steamed in a whole wintermelon. Both were excellent. They brought out a live lobster which then got stir fried with a delicious sticky rice with dried scallops, mushrooms, chinese sausage. If you don't want the luxury version, you can order this exact same sticky rice dish alone. The Wintermelon soup is a Cantonese banquet staple so it was very nostalgic for me. It was absolutely loaded with savory ingredients like chicken, dried scallops, lily bulbs and all their flavor leeched into a very clear, but complex broth with silky steamed wintermelon. Even if I hadn't ordered the over-the-top special dishes, Colette's menu is filled with extremely special, but reasonably priced dishes that makes this restaurant a standout. The Golden Egg Shrimp is battered with salted egg yolk, giving it a unmistakable yellow/orange hue and an amazing savoriness. The Crispy Skin Chicken is a signature dish on every table, beautifully presented on a long plate. It is chicken skin, sandwiching shrimp paste, and impossibly crisp. The braised tofu and mushrooms was a family favorite and the scallops with peppers was also well-done. Tea and rice are by the bowl/per person so those charges add up fast, but I consider it part of the high-end dining experience. Colette is certainly a special place and I recommend it! read more

My family decided to come to Colette as a post Bday celebration for myself and my Dad! And boy were we in for a treat! My Mom pre-ordered their special Crispy Stuffed Chicken (deboned air fried chicken with shrimp paste, then refabricated) and loved it! The skin on top is light and super crispy, and the chicken and shrimp flavors are very prominent and well balanced! Another standout was their Lamb Chops - as tender and juicy as can be, and stir fried with a super flavorful medley of chili and onions! The deep fried Oysters were also a hit - super meaty and fried crisp yet a light and delicate mouth feel. The birthday boy (Dad at 89 years young) announced that every single dish was very good (which says a lot coming from him)! In addition to the unique and enjoyable culinary experience, the service was outstanding - we had 2 friendly Cantonese waiters helping us and making us feel right at home. They even helped my Dad in his elderly age, with keeping a close watch on him and assisting with drinks, napkins and ensuring he was having a good time! The meal ended with happy tummies and happy hearts - and the staff gifted us homemade fresh rice balls with sesame covered in peanut for dessert. A huge fan favorite (we literally fought over them). 3.5 stars We tried the new menu at this popular restaurant. It was busy with lots of large parties. I was surprised at the location and the French name, but there's a history to this place. The twist of classic Chinese dishes is evident in the menu, but you have to have a leap of faith since there are no pictures on the menu and online pics are very limited at this time too. Some of the dishes work (stuffed chicken, chayote and pork, pumpkin and salted egg and fried oysters, sticky rice with cheese - although these last three aren't really injecting much newness. ) Other dishes didn't really get our thumbs up judging by how much we left on our plates ( pan fried vermicelli and beef.) I would probably get a rice dish, beef and chow fun and drop the vermicelli. We didn't try the soups or the seafood. We did the dim sum hargow and shumei which were great for the kids but available everywhere else. And I was tempted by the laksa fish but it's not Cantonese so I skipped it. The kitchen pace was a little inconsistent; we did cancel a dim sum dish that didn't arrive in good time. Many dishes were just put down with no announcement. Since these are new dishes it would be great to be told what it is and to have it placed in the center of the table. Most regular Chinese restaurants shift plates to make room. This was a bit of a drive for us so this probably won't be our regular spot, but it'll be nice to see how this menu develops. Try it but know this isn't a traditional Chinese menu. This Saturday evening, I took my wife to a new Cantonese restaurant for early Valentine Day dinner. I called to make a reservation for 6:30. They lady they were busy at 6:30 but had an opening at 7:15. I took it. We arrived at 6:45. The table opened up and we were seated right away. The server asked us what we like to drink. We ordered Jasmine tea. As we were checking the sheets they provided, they gave us the Dim Sum and drinks sheets. I got up and found the menu sheet. We ordered: Salt and Pepper tossed Calamari. Stuffed chicken wings. Stirred fried asparagus. Braised tofu with mushrooms. Well-done Beef Vermicelli. Scallop Fried Rice with Ham. The calamari was tender and batter crunchy. A bit oily. The wings were perfectly done. The asparagus were plain. Just stirred fried. Lacked taste. The tofu was a bit salty. The beef Vermicelli is OK. And yes, I tasted the beef. Felt weird tasting beef. The fried rice we didn't taste because we waited 30 minutes before flagging a server. We asked the server how much longer for our last item. He asked what we ordered. We said it would be a while. We noticed the multiple of the same dishes were coming out at the same time. We think they are batching the same dishes and serving them the same time. After a while, we asked our last dish to be boxed to go. Within 10 minutes, our scallops fried rice was done and boxed with the check. The check was $134. I gave them 15% tip. Total: $152. There was no apology from the staff. They thanked us for coming. One major concern is that they have one unisex bathroom for approximately 100 patrons. DJ's rating: 3.45/5.00 (generous rating because it's new). Would I come back? Most likely not. Update: The scallops fried rice. We ate the scallop fried rice two days later. It was good and tasty. FYI: read that a new Chef "quietly took over" Nov. 2022 so review is from our most recent dining experience in January of 2023: I don't ever crave Chinese food because I've been with my husband's family far too many times at authentic Chinese restaurants and Dim Sum places in the SGV, so I expected it would be the same as all the others...I couldn't have been more wrong. Colette is one of the restaurants in a plaza with ample parking. From the outside it seems like an older restaurant with a local neighborhood vibe but everything inside seems new and trendy with a delightful twist on Hong Kong Cuisine! Our dear friends suggested we meet here and I'm so happy we did. The Wagyu Fried Rice had enough juicy pieces of Wagyu that I wanted to eat it all up by myself. The Blackened Pepper Beef had good seasoning with tender pieces of beef,not overpowering in flavor. We wanted the Fried chicken but they were all out by 2pm so we "settled" for probabaly the best Fried Short Ribs we've ever had collectively and my friends & I are true foodies. The Truffle Fried Rice was one of our faves and the Salmon Carpaccio with Wasabi Balsamic was perfectly paired and mixed up to become a unique type of salad. Our friends liked their dimsum choices but I was too busy eating everything else so I couldn't review those dishes but we were all very pleased. How can anyone complain over delicious food without all that grease? It is pricier than your typical Chinese restaurant around the area but it's definitely worth it. It's more of a fusion and exactly what we came here for. Our waiter was informative, helpful and kind. As a matter of fact,the entire staff was courteous. Heck, even the diners were nice but I think it's because we were in good spirits from the satisfying food and service. I may not crave Chinese food in general, but I will definitely be craving the food here at Colette. Bonus is that they also have a super cute outdoor patio that's dog friendly so we plan to come back with our senior yorkie next time. We came here because they were featured on eater/la. We ordered the house special crispy stuffed chicken. the almond beef cubes, the braised tofu with mushrooms & the well-done beef vermicelli. Food tasted fine but nothing made me want to return to this restaurant. The signature dish... crispy stuffed chicken had hardly any chicken in it... it's basically fried shrimp paste with crispy chicken skin. Service was non-existent. Food took forever to come out of the kitchen. Nobody came to check on us. I had to go to the checkout counter to get more napkins for the table, and I had to go get our bill from the cashier because we got tired of waiting for them to bring it to our table. 3 star for food. 1 star for service. read more

Definitely it your typical Chinese dim sum. They are known for this stuffed chicken wing. It's a very crunchy , well executed dish but lacked overall seasoning. It was very intricate and interesting but was bland. I would eat it daily if it just had salt. It did come with a small dish of salt in the side , which I found odd for Chinese food. Most Chinese food is flavored. The har gow and siu mai were delicious and the blanched yam was also very bland. It was either a hit or a miss. I need to go back and stick to just traditional dim sum and really make up my mind about this place. It's all the way north in Michillinda where one would not think of dim sum. I am so happy that there is a great Chinese restaurant close by! Dim sum in the morning and amazing looking dishes for dinner. Today, I was in the area and decided to try their dim sum. Their menu is limited in regards to selection. I called my order in, in hopes that it would expedite my order. My order included, shu mai, hat how, bbq pork bun, and sticky rice in lotus leaf. Everything is made/steamed to order. Each item was very tasty and fresh. It was still warm when I got home to eat with my husband. The restaurant is simple and clean with an outdoor seating area. They are pet friendly. There are numerous waiters walking back and forth delivering food as well as filling water and tea. The only lady in front was very nice, following up with me every so often so that I knew she didn't forget I was waiting for my to go food. Will definitely be back to try out their dinner menu. Took a field trip to the SGV Coachella weekend, found this place from an Instagram reel posted by Infatuation. We visited Colette on a Sunday afternoon in the rain, there was no wait to get a table for 3 and we we're seated immediately. The inside was pretty spacious as well. The service was pretty attentive and we got our food quick. We tried the crispy honey shrimp, crispy stuffed chicken, kurobuta char siu pork, shrimp & pork siu mai, and pork juicy dumpling. Crispy Honey Shrimp 4/5 Review - The shrimp was a delicious and the serving size for this dish was generous. The shrimps were jumbo and butterflied. They honey and crisp on it was nice. Crispy Stuffed Chicken 2/5 Review - The item that initially caught my attention to try this spot unfortunately was my least favorite dish of the meal. The outside is very crispy but I did not really enjoy the huge contrast between the texture on the inside and outside. Kurobuta Char Siu Pork 4.5/5 Review - This was my favorite dish of the meal. Was originally looking for pancakes and waffles but when we arrived it was actually a soft open for a Chinese diner. We took a chance and see since we were really craving the breakfast meals We ordered the seafood pumpkin soup and I was able to request no shrimp which is very accommodating. I can be almost 100% sure some of the 5-star reviews are from friends and family because that was the only review in their account. Just so you know, this review of mine is going to focus on the food, not the price. Everyone should know how expensive it is from other legit reviews, though I also had no idea how our bill came out to be $700+ for 10 dishes. Lol, but not focusing on that. I didn't see the bill, so I can't tell you much. I only paid for my share and made the bday friend happy. I also didn't make any comments on the food at the table except for the one that no one liked. It's not a very big restaurant. Half of the tables are served at the patio area. I was surprised how much people were waiting in line when I got there. I was thinking, this place must be delicious! Crispy stuff chicken with shrimp paste: I don't remember tasting any meat. Was this only the skin and shrimp paste? It wasn't a satisfying bite as I expected because I love crispy chicken and shrimp paste. Char siu pork: It was ok. You can definitely taste the honey. Chicken stew and lamb stew: You can get it in most Cantonese style restaurants for just as good if not better. The only difference was that the chicken stew added oysters. There was really not much of a difference in taste. The mushroom in the lamb stew was very salty because it soaked up the sauce. Truffle shredded chicken: A lot of people love the taste of truffle, and because of its price, it will make you think you're eating something super fancy. Just know that there are also different grades of truffle. I think the truffle is really overpowering the chicken itself, but overall, this was a decent dish as well. Truffle fried rice: Someone at our table pointed out that the fried rice was very good. Well then, I have to try it. Honestly, in my opinion, it wasn't as good as he expressed. If it wasn't the truffle, this really didn't have enough flavor. Silky chicken soup: Average. Chayote with minced pork: This is probably cooked with 1 chayote that costs 50 cents at most markets. However, it's the dish that my kid enjoyed the most because it's decent and it's green. Scrambled milk: I don't think anyone had this dish before, so we ordered it. Everyone tried it, and that was it. It was left unfinished bc no one liked it. It didn't taste like anything. It doesn't taste like milk since it was pan-fried. If you don't tell me what it was, I really can't tell what it was bc it was very blend even though it was cooked with a few pieces of shrimp. And no, it didn't taste like tofu either. Leopard coral grouper: This was probably charged at market price. It could be one of the most expensive dishes we ordered. The one we got was slightly undercooked. You will know when the meat doesn't completely fall off the bone. It also had a slight bitter taste to it. I think whoever killed the fish might have broke the fish gall so it a little bit got stuck on the fish because once that gets on the fish, it's pretty much impossible to get rid of it since the fish was steamed. I made a reservation for 4 people for dinner. I came to the restaurant. There are some empty tables for 6 people. But the management wanted to seat us in the outdoor section. I guess they want to reserve the inside tables for 6 people parties. I complained and said that I called to make a reservation. They should have reserved a table for me. there are no carts here. you order from the menu. some will swear dim sum has to be on carts, but i have a hard time ordering that way. i don't eat pork, chicken or beef, but i inevitably end up biting into something with meat in it and spitting it out. here the staff was helpful in letting me know which dishes i could eat. many of the dishes were really good like the tofu and veggie dish. it's simple yet done so well. my uncle loved the laksa and garlic broccoli. i just wish they used a noodle other than spaghetti for it. my aunt loved the seafood noodle dish. they have lots of indoor and outdoor space with heat lamps. even the indoor space is well-ventilated. the tea selection is legit. we went with a basic jasmine, and one pot served four of us for the whole meal. they refilled the water without us asking. i enjoyed it and would definitely go again. read more

I went here to celebrate my brother's birthday. We live about an hour away but Eater LA recommended this place as one of the best. Their fried rice was DELICIOUS! I will say we did order without green onions, clarified with the waiter when we came back with drinks, and then there were still green onions in it when the dish arrived... but they were very apologetic and replaced it quickly. It seems as though they have special off menu items but it was a little hard to understand what it was because of the language barrier. I'm normally pretty adverse to "expensive" Chinese food since "cheap" Chinese food is so good and so abundant in SGV. Overall as long as you are open to the fact that this is not going to be your traditional Chinese restaurant then you should find it enjoyable. They have dim sum but it's not a full on dim sum menu. There are maybe 5-6 options like Har Gow, Siu Mai, Cha Siu bao, chicken feet... They also have some standard chow fun and friend rice options as well as some dishes that are spruced up with truffles and wagyu. The overall quality of the dishes is different a step above your average chinese restaurant and i think the prices are "fair." read more

I came here in a party of 4 on a Saturday afternoon. We had reservations for 1pm and were running a little late, but it wasn't an issue as there plenty of free tables. We had pre-ordered a lobster with sticky rice. We were able to meet our lobster before the meal - his name was Ben and I thank him for his service! Our server was very friendly and was able to give great recommendations. We also the rose tea, Faux Gras Shimeji Mushroom, crispy stuffed chicken, Golden Yolk Fried Pumpkin, and Kurobuta char siu pork. The quality and presentation of each dish was fantastic!! Definitely elevated which was a fun contrast with the outdoor setting/picnic style table & bench. The crispy stuffed chicken is super interesting. I loved the crispy chicken skin and the shrimp paste/panko crust on the bottom. The char siu was pretty fatty (and delicious). The highlight was definitely the fried lobster with sticky rice. We had plenty of leftovers and the amount of food we ordered likely could have covered one or two more people. Really good. Our reservations were really early in the evening so we didn't have to wait. Service was really prompt and excellent. I feel like this place is a more laid back Bistro Na. The food is really rich. If there was anything my friend and I had, it was the tea and the steamed greens. I think it's hard to order for 1-2 people because you want to try everything. Coming back, I would reorder the lambchops and the shrimp. The chicken skin with shrimp dish is really delicious too but it needed some salt. An eccentric Cantonese food adventure, it feels like you're going to a mountain resort for dim sum in the foothills of Sierra Madre. If that sounds a little odd, well, buckle up, cuz that's the flavor you're in for. AMBIENCE: Outside on the patio was rustically charming, although the bench seating ain't great for seniors. I'd highly recommend avoiding an indoor table, as the inside is completely bare and devoid of any charm. A little chilly at night even w/the heat lamps, so dress warm. SERVICE: Very patient and kind. Our server spoke both English and Mandarin. FOOD: Of the extensive and ambitious-seeming menu, it pains me to report they basically serve fantastic dim sum and everything else felt mediocre or misguided. I suspect the chef is trying to branch out and with middling results. Our order: Bulang Pu Erh tea ($3/person) - When you're spending $9 on tea for 3 people at a Chinese restaurant, you have to recalibrate your perceptions. At least it was decent tea, and with beautiful tea cups. Dim sum (3 pieces each) - Really great, fresh ingredients, and steaming hot. I'd come back for these alone. Dim-sum fresh to order really makes a difference. Plus, my brother scoured the socials for the "secret phrase," which got us a free order of siu mai(!) - Jumbo shrimp har gao - Shrimp & pork siu mai - Egg Yolk bun Fried oysters (6 pieces) - delicately fried, tasty. Crispy stuffed Chicken (half) - skip this. For $36, this is dish, which uses shrimp paste as a filling, felt gimmicky and insubstantial. It would be much better as an appetizer rather than a main. Garlic kale - I know, who orders kale at a Chinese restaurant? But we wanted some leafy greens and it's slim pickings here. They were just fine. I like the idea of this place very much, even with the extra effort it takes to get out there. Visited on a Saturday for dinner and was very excited to try. Parking was easy but we arrived early. They have a lot with plenty of spots. Definitely loved the Golden Yolk Fried Pumpkin. It was soft and creamy but also had a slight saltiness without being overpowering. The lamb chops were also really good. Great flavor. The char sui was amazing. It was really fatty pork belly and basically melted in my mouth. Flavor was to die for. Everything was amazing. I would definitely go back for dinner as well as to try their dim sum. read more

I've been wanting to come here for years and I'm so glad I did. I didn't have the best experience but I will definitely try them again because we all have off days. I ordered a patty melt and got a BLT . They forgot the bacon lol So- I didn't eat. But the waiter took the meal off and and an additional 10% for our issue. Very low key and laid back. read more

For an 80th birthday celebration, a group of us enjoyed being together at Colette. - November 16th, 5:30 PM. We did NOT enjoy the high prices and flavourless cuisine. And it was VERY unprofessional of staff to laugh and 'party' in a group by the bar, acting silly and being noisy, ignoring our needs. It was an opposite experience that is desribed in the website: "At Colette, we believe dining is an experience involving all senses, not just taste. Therefore, we try to ensure that our guests will enjoy the service provided by our staff and our decor, in addition to the excellent quality and taste of our menu items. This has been our go-to stop for comfort food and/or little celebrations. I recommend ordering excessively. Such creative Cantonese cuisine and thoughtful service. If only Jonathan Gold were alive to dish his poetry on this place. read more

This was a bit of a miss for me. The portions are not good for two person dining, which is a little strange because I do think a lot of people dine with just one other person. Their signature dish, the crispy stuffed chicken was nearly $40 and the portion was decently large; but why not sell it in a portion less than that for a small party? The bowl of noodles in broth, huge, cost $16 with no protein (you can add protein for an added cost). More importantly though, the food was just ok in my opinion. The crispy chicken was decent, I didn't think it was anything special? Maybe I'm missing something. It is essentially a piece of crispy chicken skin on top of a thick portion of shrimp paste. The Kung Pao chicken was surprisingly my favorite of the items we ordered. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary either, but it was good. There's some hype around Colette so that does make me scratch my head as to why. All in all, I probably won't be back. (Also, anyone know why they kept the name of the previous American breakfast place? All the reviews from that place are still on tho page, so maybe it's to retain the Yelp page? This is my all time favorite brunch place before pandemic. I have not been here since COVID started. I have been calling their phone number since a year ago to see if they were opened. However, their phone number is either busy, no one picking up, or letting me know their voice mail is not set up. I went on yelp last night and saw that they updated their hours a month ago, so I decided to come in for brunch on the following day. I tried to join the yelp waitlist before I head out even though it says "under 5 minutes wait." However, it kept giving me an error message. When I got here, the host told me that their yelp is not active, and my wait is 20 minutes. I mentioned about their phone, and she was dismissive and told me, "I don't know what to tell you." Waited for 40 minutes before we were seated. Waitress was very friendly, and a guy was helping her to serve us drinks. He knocked down a drink on our table and was very apologetic, and the waitress kept apologizing to us even though we kept telling them it is ok. We ordered our food and it came 20 minutes later. We ordered soyrizo scramble and pain Perdue. The food was as good as it used to be! I miss the taste. Both dishes were very flavorful! After sitting in the restaurant for so long, I noticed that there was only one waitress working. They advised new customers that they were not seating anymore parties after 12:30pm. With all the things that gone wrong today, I salute to the only waitress working today as they were understaff! Took away 1 star for the slow service and understaffing (not the waitress fault as she was doing her best). read more

Loved this place. Small, and cozy, with shaded patio. Perfect for pandemic brunch outside. They seem slightly understaffed so service is not the fastest but that wasn't a big deal. The food was delicious and the staff was very nice. I got the pain perdu (aka. French toast) and the omelette bar. It was the perfect brunch food and quite filling. Coffee was very good and they had almond milk on the side. Parking was easy early but I can see parking being more difficult if you come late. I've only been once and haven't had to deal with parking very much in this area but I suspect would be easy in the surrounding area as well. Food was reasonably priced. About 25$ per person with food and coffee. read more
