This is my first time here and I really enjoyed the service and outdoor vibes. The staff was extremely friendly, patient with us and lots of smiles :) they were also bilingual so I didn't have to worry about speaking English. Great place for dogs, the staff even brought my dog a water bowl for him to relax and drink from. There is outdoor and indoor seating. My furry pet would get in the way when the waiter was carrying the food out and the waiter was so friendly, unbothered at all and then saying hi to my dog in a friendly manner. Plenty of parking and space We also sat there for awhile until closing and they didn't even rush us to leave (sorry we lost track of time!). Everyone was so chill. Food -- must try the crispy chicken (this is grounded chicken and shrimp, which is why it is chewy and there is no bones at all) . I also enjoyed char siu bao, egg yolk bun, and siu mao but they tasted like the classic dim sum. I also tried the honey shrimp, which was good when it's hot. Had a massive blast of a 3 hr 22 minute dinner. We got there at 5pm. Place was pretty empty, but filled up rather quickly. Their Jasmine tea (in a beautiful kintsugi tea set) was so good! - Their service is outstanding, refills of hot water without asking - Very accommodating for extra sauces, etc. The best things we had: - Lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice (best in it's class) - Sui Mai (only 3 pcs but super tasty, worth the price); but it was missing the orange eggs garnish as seen in the pictures) - Pressed shrimp paste that is fried, but also has crispy chicken skin on top (comes with a dipping sauce) - Phenomenal! [Think Peking DUCK without the duck LOL] - Loofah with salted egg yolk Tasty but both were SUPER salty (I am in Stage 4 CKD but didn't want to complain further): - Garlic Kale (I will ask for half the amt of salt next time to be safe) - Clams (super salty) but a good amount of clams, cooked well, very tender Meh: - Xiao Long Bao (4 pcs, very little meat and broth, skin was kinda thick) - The rice roll paper sheets that are deep fried (we thought it was gonna be a spring roll deep fried, it literally is just the rice sheets); due to my diabetes, dangerous to eat, the manager obliged us and allowed us to cancel it and swap for the garlic kale. But I must say, the sauce on it was superb! The place has enough parking. A very nice vibe, casual, low key. Very welcoming! We sat in patio and had such a great time! There is a neon Collette sign against greenery that is a great spot for a selfie. I think next time around, I will try to order other things, and make sure to stipulate less salt. First time to this restaurant. A hidden gem in Pasadena. All the dishes were flavorful and savory. The golden shrimp was fried to perfection with egg yolk batter. The scallop with vermicelli was so savory soaked in garlic sauce. The highlight of the dinner was the crispy stuffed chicken. It was so tender and juicy. All the dishes didn't disappoint. I went to Colette on a Monday night and they were over half full, so it was easy to get a table. Parking is convenient since there is a parking lot right in front of the entrance. The menu has a lot of options which is great but I was a little confused so wanted to ask about the most popular dishes. I had asked the waiter for suggestions however his only suggestion was the lobster fried rice (their special for the day). I asked for more suggestions and he did not share any. When he came back I asked about the price and due to lobster market pricing it would have been a minimum of $120. I was glad I asked, but I would have been really upset to have gotten a bill that high without warning if I did decide to order it. I ended up ordering beef chow fun - it was okay. I usually love chow fun anywhere I go however it lacked spice which was surprising. Maybe an off day for them? My friend ordered the laksa seafood spaghetti and she really enjoyed it. A hit! - the taro duck - unusual and delicious - turbot steamed fish (2x) - perfectly cooked , the sauce delicate and heady - the fresh lobster (6#) w yi noodles the show piece again cooked masterfully in an amazing delicate sauce w yi noodles - seafood HK style mein(2x) my sister's favorite as she said all the elements were tender Everything was beautiful and impressive - the taste of each dish special and different. Very unique dishes and classic dishes- This is Chinese cuisine at its best. The joy of sharing this spectacular lunch, my guests were wowed. I was very happy. I would love to try their snow crab and geoduck clam cooked 2-3 ways and some of their other menus items, another time but this birthday celebration was all that I wanted and hoped for. My wife's dear friend wanted to treat us for lunch at Colette to mark my wife's 75th birthday. We went today and it was a wonderful dining experience. My wife's friend grew up in Taiwan so she was able to communicate with our waitress in Chinese. She had dined there before and had a few dishes in mind for us. I had perused the menu the night before on their website so I knew one dish in particular that I wanted to try.....Golden Pork Trots (deep fried pigs feet). She ordered Curry Beef Brisket, Garlic Broccoli, Sticky Fried Rice and Sticky Fried Rice. I ordered Crispy Shrimp and Char Sui Buns. Everything was delicious especially the Curry Beef Brisket. That was a hit!!! I like fried pigs feet and theirs were as tasty as I had hoped. All our choices were plated nicely and looked very appetizing. The restaurant is not fancy but is comfortable and inviting. The service was good with our waitress and others checking on our needs and bringing more water. The techniques and flavors here are executed well, better than some places on Valley Blvd. I really hope they continue adding/ rotating menu items! I wish the patio location wasn't right next to the dumpster or they used something to cover it up. The patio also still gets really hot (currently in the summer) despite them having multiple ac units blasting. I would get here earlier on the weekends to avoid sitting outside. read more

The other items taste like what you can get at any other dim sum restaurants. If anything my friend had to ask for hot sauce because it was kinda bland. The wagyu fried rice hardly had any beef in it. The char siu pork was really dried. My friend did like the chicken feet, but it was a boiled version so it wasn't my favorite. The stuffed crispy chicken was maybe the saving grace, but it looks better than the taste. The mushroom truffle noodles had truffle oil, but definitely not real truffle. Overall 3.5 starts - the meal was okay, but not very memorable. We were a party of 4 that arrive when it just open on a Saturday. 4+ this place serves dim sum and Cantonese food in general. It opens for a brunch/lunch. Closes and reopens for dinner time. I it's also located in a small strip mall in the East Pasadena area. There's pretty decent amount of parking around so it's not a problem. The folks here are hospitable and friendly, and it has a nice outdoor seating area as well as an indoor seating area. A group of us wanted to try the dim sum hair cause we've heard about it on a podcast and it looked and sounded delicious. There were about 5 of us. We ordered the staples like har gao, shu mai, pork soup dumplings, and char siu buns. I got all these were really good and well done. The structure of the dumplings were great and the flavors delivered. We also ordered some specialties like their crispy stuffed chicken and well done beef vermicelli. I asked crispy stuffed chicken had a little bit of shrimp in there and had a nice crispy texture and a mix of good flavors. It came with a sweet-ish dipping sauce that added some acid to the crispy fried texture. The vermicelli reminded me of the crispy Hong Kong style chow mein noodles. It was a crispy noodles that was soften buy beef gravy, which eating fresh, had a good combination of textures and flavors I was a fan. It started getting a little warm in the area so outside seating felt like a fun day picnic. It's a really cool spot, but feels like it's kind of located out of off the beaten path. My first time experiencing Colette was during one of our company board meeting dinners and it was fantastic. Great take on modernized Cantonese cuisine and I was definitely feeling nostalgic because these were the flavors I grew up eating. I now come here periodically for their dim sum during lunch because it's nearby my office and it's tasty enough. Not the best, but it will do. The service is inconsistent ranging from attentiveness to non-existent after your food is dropped off while the décor is minimal within the restaurant and gives off the scent of old, dirty, wet mop. They kept the patio's décor from the previous ownership, which gives it a bit of charm but it ends there. If you only care about quality and tastefulness of food and nothing more, then Colette is the place for you! read more

It's been awhile since I been to Colette and some things have really changed. They are serving Asian style dishes and I am so happy we made reservations to come try it out. Some food items are special order and you can ask about it when you make reservations. Lobster sticky rice-the lobster was more of a dry toss and they add sticky rice to the toss. They bring out the lobster for you to look at and give you the approx weight of the lobster as well. 5/5 Spare ribs, lightly coated and deep fried, not oily at all and they fry up some garlic pieces to compliment this dish. 5/5 Scallops-good flavor, toss with some bell pepper and onions, its more of a gravy type stir fry. 4/5 Mayo shrimp and walnut-nice juicy pieces of shrimp and lightly coated and tossed with honey mayo and served with walnuts and strawberries. 5/5 Beef almond is a very interesting one and i honestly did not like that flatten beef covered in almonds and serviced on a bed of orange tangy sauce. 1/5 Crispy chicken skins-now this one is interesting, it taste like shrimp paste on the bottom and it had crispy flavorful chicken skin on top. 5/5 Chayote with minced meat-looks and taste like a sort of squash and toss with minced pork, has that authentic Asian flavor. really good dish 5/5 Black truffle mushroom noodles-its good but nothing really stands out like some of their other dishes. 3/5 Overall service was good but once they got busy it was hard to get someone to help you but be patience. read more

My family decided to come to Colette as a post Bday celebration for myself and my Dad! And boy were we in for a treat! My Mom pre-ordered their special Crispy Stuffed Chicken (deboned air fried chicken with shrimp paste, then refabricated) and loved it! The skin on top is light and super crispy, and the chicken and shrimp flavors are very prominent and well balanced! Another standout was their Lamb Chops - as tender and juicy as can be, and stir fried with a super flavorful medley of chili and onions! The deep fried Oysters were also a hit - super meaty and fried crisp yet a light and delicate mouth feel. The birthday boy (Dad at 89 years young) announced that every single dish was very good (which says a lot coming from him)! In addition to the unique and enjoyable culinary experience, the service was outstanding - we had 2 friendly Cantonese waiters helping us and making us feel right at home. They even helped my Dad in his elderly age, with keeping a close watch on him and assisting with drinks, napkins and ensuring he was having a good time! The meal ended with happy tummies and happy hearts - and the staff gifted us homemade fresh rice balls with sesame covered in peanut for dessert. A huge fan favorite (we literally fought over them). The Shu Mai was good. The Egg Yolk Bun was most likely frozen and then steamed. The Shrimp Rice Noodle Dumpling didn't hold up and Rice Noodle broke when I went to pick it up with my chop sticks. The service here is sadly disrespectful. When we sat down, we noticed the table is quite sticky. When we asked for a wipe down, instead of being apologetic for the stickiness, they said that's just the way it is and that it's clean. So they know their tables are sticky and they didn't try to do something about them--like change the sticky tables out to better wooden tables that are not sticky. We have wooden tables at many of our homes and they are definitely not sticky. When we ask if they can put a table cloth over our table since some of the tables have table cloths, they said they don't have any more table cloths. When we asked if we can switch to a nearby table that has table cloth (there were many empty tables at the time for 5:45pm seating) the lady said no, those tablecloth tables are for people who order $1000 worth of food. Even my mom gave her a look. Anyways, ordering $1000 worth of food for party of 7 is not hard since we've been to many Michelin restaurants and don't mind spending money if it's good food we want to eat, but the assumption of how much we were going to spend before we even ordered is just quite disrespectful. So later, they seated another party of 7 at the table with table cloth. This place serves higher priced Chinese food. At this price point, strongly suggest for the restaurant to replace their sticky tables to give customers better experiences and train their servers to be more polite to the guests. We order a variety of food and dim sum--surprisingly the server said they only have one steamer for dim sum so our dim sums came out like 15-20 minutes after each batch-- so they came out in 3 different batches. Felt like I can heat more dim sum at my home for quicker turnaround lol. read more

I was ecstatic to someone post pics of a very familiar crispy stuffed chicken. It's probably been close to 20 years since I last had it at Embassy kitchen and made reservations at Colette the next night for dinner. If you are interested in the crispy stuffed chicken, do reserve it ahead of time as they are still in a soft opening phase. We arrived early and was a bit surprised to only see another table or patrons for dinner. Glad the restaurant started filling up closer to 6. We ordered a bunch of items, most of which were good but was a bit disappointed with their dim sum dishes. Stuffed chicken wings - perfectly dried and stuffed with loh mai fan (糯米飯). Great appetizer to start the meal. Braised tofu w/mushrooms - super flavorful and pairs well with white rice. Golden pork trots - another perfectly fried dish but I recall this being better back in the day while dining at Embassy kitchen. Had a good amount of fried garlic on top but couldn't really taste much of the garlic. Crispy stuffed chicken - I think this was even better than I remember it being. Crispy chicken skin with shrimp paste in the middle. The sauce was good but I think I preferred this with the jiu yim (椒盐). Black truffle yi mein w/mushrooms - modern take on a traditional Cantonese dish. Enjoyed this one especially with a light truffle flavor. Stir fried asparagus - perfectly stir fried and seasoned. Har gow and siu mai - wasn't super impressed with the flavor of either one but was shocked at the size of each. Salted egg custard bao - had high hopes and really was expecting a better way to end our meal. Not really sure how to explain but the custard seemed a bit dry to me. Colette is a sneaky Chinese restaurant with a non-Chinese name on the border of Pasadena and Sierra Madre. We came here right before Lunar New Year 2023 and had an amazing lunch. We pre-ordered two off-menu specials. When they are off-menu, they really mean it. I had to screen shot Instagram stories and reels to figure out what was available. The first was the Lobster Sticky Rice and the second was a Wintermelon Soup served steamed in a whole wintermelon. Both were excellent. They brought out a live lobster which then got stir fried with a delicious sticky rice with dried scallops, mushrooms, chinese sausage. If you don't want the luxury version, you can order this exact same sticky rice dish alone. The Wintermelon soup is a Cantonese banquet staple so it was very nostalgic for me. It was absolutely loaded with savory ingredients like chicken, dried scallops, lily bulbs and all their flavor leeched into a very clear, but complex broth with silky steamed wintermelon. Even if I hadn't ordered the over-the-top special dishes, Colette's menu is filled with extremely special, but reasonably priced dishes that makes this restaurant a standout. The Golden Egg Shrimp is battered with salted egg yolk, giving it a unmistakable yellow/orange hue and an amazing savoriness. The Crispy Skin Chicken is a signature dish on every table, beautifully presented on a long plate. It is chicken skin, sandwiching shrimp paste, and impossibly crisp. The braised tofu and mushrooms was a family favorite and the scallops with peppers was also well-done. Tea and rice are by the bowl/per person so those charges add up fast, but I consider it part of the high-end dining experience. Colette is certainly a special place and I recommend it! read more

This Saturday evening, I took my wife to a new Cantonese restaurant for early Valentine Day dinner. I called to make a reservation for 6:30. They lady they were busy at 6:30 but had an opening at 7:15. I took it. We arrived at 6:45. The table opened up and we were seated right away. The server asked us what we like to drink. We ordered Jasmine tea. As we were checking the sheets they provided, they gave us the Dim Sum and drinks sheets. I got up and found the menu sheet. We ordered: Salt and Pepper tossed Calamari. Stuffed chicken wings. Stirred fried asparagus. Braised tofu with mushrooms. Well-done Beef Vermicelli. Scallop Fried Rice with Ham. The calamari was tender and batter crunchy. A bit oily. The wings were perfectly done. The asparagus were plain. Just stirred fried. Lacked taste. The tofu was a bit salty. The beef Vermicelli is OK. And yes, I tasted the beef. Felt weird tasting beef. The fried rice we didn't taste because we waited 30 minutes before flagging a server. We asked the server how much longer for our last item. He asked what we ordered. We said it would be a while. We noticed the multiple of the same dishes were coming out at the same time. We think they are batching the same dishes and serving them the same time. After a while, we asked our last dish to be boxed to go. Within 10 minutes, our scallops fried rice was done and boxed with the check. The check was $134. I gave them 15% tip. Total: $152. There was no apology from the staff. They thanked us for coming. One major concern is that they have one unisex bathroom for approximately 100 patrons. DJ's rating: 3.45/5.00 (generous rating because it's new). Would I come back? Most likely not. Update: The scallops fried rice. We ate the scallop fried rice two days later. It was good and tasty. We prefer the protein of the any fried rice dish to be the star (meaning large portions). Not the case. At $28 for this dish, we don't see the value. read more

3.5 stars We tried the new menu at this popular restaurant. It was busy with lots of large parties. I was surprised at the location and the French name, but there's a history to this place. The twist of classic Chinese dishes is evident in the menu, but you have to have a leap of faith since there are no pictures on the menu and online pics are very limited at this time too. Some of the dishes work (stuffed chicken, chayote and pork, pumpkin and salted egg and fried oysters, sticky rice with cheese - although these last three aren't really injecting much newness. ) Other dishes didn't really get our thumbs up judging by how much we left on our plates ( pan fried vermicelli and beef.) I would probably get a rice dish, beef and chow fun and drop the vermicelli. We didn't try the soups or the seafood. We did the dim sum hargow and shumei which were great for the kids but available everywhere else. And I was tempted by the laksa fish but it's not Cantonese so I skipped it. The kitchen pace was a little inconsistent; we did cancel a dim sum dish that didn't arrive in good time. Many dishes were just put down with no announcement. Since these are new dishes it would be great to be told what it is and to have it placed in the center of the table. Most regular Chinese restaurants shift plates to make room. This was a bit of a drive for us so this probably won't be our regular spot, but it'll be nice to see how this menu develops. Try it but know this isn't a traditional Chinese menu. FYI: read that a new Chef "quietly took over" Nov. 2022 so review is from our most recent dining experience in January of 2023: I don't ever crave Chinese food because I've been with my husband's family far too many times at authentic Chinese restaurants and Dim Sum places in the SGV, so I expected it would be the same as all the others...I couldn't have been more wrong. Colette is one of the restaurants in a plaza with ample parking. From the outside it seems like an older restaurant with a local neighborhood vibe but everything inside seems new and trendy with a delightful twist on Hong Kong Cuisine! Our dear friends suggested we meet here and I'm so happy we did. The Wagyu Fried Rice had enough juicy pieces of Wagyu that I wanted to eat it all up by myself. The Blackened Pepper Beef had good seasoning with tender pieces of beef,not overpowering in flavor. We wanted the Fried chicken but they were all out by 2pm so we "settled" for probabaly the best Fried Short Ribs we've ever had collectively and my friends & I are true foodies. The Truffle Fried Rice was one of our faves and the Salmon Carpaccio with Wasabi Balsamic was perfectly paired and mixed up to become a unique type of salad. Our friends liked their dimsum choices but I was too busy eating everything else so I couldn't review those dishes but we were all very pleased. How can anyone complain over delicious food without all that grease? It is pricier than your typical Chinese restaurant around the area but it's definitely worth it. It's more of a fusion and exactly what we came here for. Our waiter was informative, helpful and kind. As a matter of fact,the entire staff was courteous. Heck, even the diners were nice but I think it's because we were in good spirits from the satisfying food and service. I may not crave Chinese food in general, but I will definitely be craving the food here at Colette. Bonus is that they also have a super cute outdoor patio that's dog friendly so we plan to come back with our senior yorkie next time. Food tasted fine but nothing made me want to return to this restaurant. The signature dish... crispy stuffed chicken had hardly any chicken in it... it's basically fried shrimp paste with crispy chicken skin. Service was non-existent. Food took forever to come out of the kitchen. Nobody came to check on us. OMG, I think I found my new favorite spot! The food here was so good, all of it! I'm still dreaming about how good this place was. Definitely it your typical Chinese dim sum. They are known for this stuffed chicken wing. It's a very crunchy , well executed dish but lacked overall seasoning. It was very intricate and interesting but was bland. I would eat it daily if it just had salt. It did come with a small dish of salt in the side , which I found odd for Chinese food. Most Chinese food is flavored. The har gow and siu mai were delicious and the blanched yam was also very bland. It was either a hit or a miss. I need to go back and stick to just traditional dim sum and really make up my mind about this place. It's all the way north in Michillinda where one would not think of dim sum. I am so happy that there is a great Chinese restaurant close by! Dim sum in the morning and amazing looking dishes for dinner. Today, I was in the area and decided to try their dim sum. Their menu is limited in regards to selection. I called my order in, in hopes that it would expedite my order. My order included, shu mai, hat how, bbq pork bun, and sticky rice in lotus leaf. Everything is made/steamed to order. Each item was very tasty and fresh. It was still warm when I got home to eat with my husband. The restaurant is simple and clean with an outdoor seating area. They are pet friendly. There are numerous waiters walking back and forth delivering food as well as filling water and tea. The only lady in front was very nice, following up with me every so often so that I knew she didn't forget I was waiting for my to go food. Will definitely be back to try out their dinner menu. I made a reservation for 4 people for dinner. I came to the restaurant. There are some empty tables for 6 people. But the management wanted to seat us in the outdoor section. I guess they want to reserve the inside tables for 6 people parties. I complained and said that I called to make a reservation. They should have reserved a table for me. At the end, the restaurant did allow us to seat indoor. The whole experience put a blemish in our overall impression of this restaurant. read more

I went here to celebrate my brother's birthday. We live about an hour away but Eater LA recommended this place as one of the best. Their fried rice was DELICIOUS! I will say we did order without green onions, clarified with the waiter when we came back with drinks, and then there were still green onions in it when the dish arrived... but they were very apologetic and replaced it quickly. It seems as though they have special off menu items but it was a little hard to understand what it was because of the language barrier. The food was good but i do not think we would drive an hour for the food. If you live closeby id suggest it. read more

Took a field trip to the SGV Coachella weekend, found this place from an Instagram reel posted by Infatuation. We visited Colette on a Sunday afternoon in the rain, there was no wait to get a table for 3 and we we're seated immediately. The inside was pretty spacious as well. The service was pretty attentive and we got our food quick. We tried the crispy honey shrimp, crispy stuffed chicken, kurobuta char siu pork, shrimp & pork siu mai, and pork juicy dumpling. Crispy Honey Shrimp 4/5 Review - The shrimp was a delicious and the serving size for this dish was generous. The shrimps were jumbo and butterflied. They honey and crisp on it was nice. Crispy Stuffed Chicken 2/5 Review - The item that initially caught my attention to try this spot unfortunately was my least favorite dish of the meal. The outside is very crispy but I did not really enjoy the huge contrast between the texture on the inside and outside. Kurobuta Char Siu Pork 4.5/5 Review - This was my favorite dish of the meal. The flavor of the pork was phenomenal, although a smidge too sweet and would have enjoyed if it was served with rice this was a great dish to order and share with the table. Shrimp & Pork Siu Mai 3.5/5 Review - Siu Mai was pretty good as well, prefer the XLB over this though! Pork Juicy Dumpling 5/5 Review - This traditional XLB soup dumpling was a must try! Was originally looking for pancakes and waffles but when we arrived it was actually a soft open for a Chinese diner. We took a chance and see since we were really craving the breakfast meals We ordered the seafood pumpkin soup and I was able to request no shrimp which is very accommodating. The beef chufun and the almond pork chop were delicious. The citrus glaze is a little overpowering but the portions are delicious and enjoyable bite size. Would probably take my parents here. Definitely hole in the wall and was really expecting breakfast but this will do. read more
