Homemade Banana Bread, Pacifica Omlette and the Hilo Mary
    Scott B.

Yummmm. I had the Pacifica omelette, homemade banana bread with a Hilo Mary ! We try to get here when it opens and we are always amazed at the exceptional food! If you're in Hilo the Coconut Grill is a must stop! Mahalo!

Casual dining. Our server was very good. My salad was very good, saved leftovers for second meal. Across from the Bay. They have a full bar. Good stop for a good meal. Please tip generously.

This restaurant is right next to the hotel we were staying. Our server was so great and sweet. There were a lot of locals there too, which told us it was probably really good :) it was delicious! Also don't skip the pie! It's huge!

    The pork ribs

The food was ok. I ordered the pork ribs, a little dry in some edges- the bake potato was overly whipped and made too starchy- it is pre-made to resemble "twice baked potato"- no sour cream but, crumbled bacon and cheese mixed together. The side of baked beans were tooo sweet and not to my liking- another guest had a hamburger which was BIG! She asked no onions and it had. Our other guest ordered the Hawaiian Luau plate- there was no complaint there. Service was busy and we had to ask for us to be served- they forgot about us. Ambiance ok. Families, casual wear- parking on the street/ popular place. Go early in the day- it might be fresher food.

One of our top 5 favorite breakfast/brunch places. Nice view, great service, tasty food; what more can you ask for? We don't really come here for lunch or dinner, but brunch here is where it's at. Large menu, everyone will find something that they like. Just be prepared to wait for a bit, seating is limited since it appears that they're only using a portion of the restaurant.

We really enjoyed our dinner hear last week. The service was fast and friendly. The restaurant was nice inside and had a big menu full of goodies. We got a yummy French dip with onion rings and some kind of steak veggie rice plate that was also great. The fried ice cream trio dessert was huge and tasty after a long day. I definitely recommend this place for a casual meal when in Hilo.

My husband and I got the cane sugar soda, Mahi Mahi fish and chips, the kahlua burger and chips. So darn tasty. This is definitely the place the locals all go to. We got off our cruise ship and asked the staff where we should go to eat and everyone's consensus was the Coconut Grill. Several people asked us all to bring back their favorite dishes.

I enjoyed the coconut shrimp tikis. The visual display was intriguing and the flavor was delicious. Our waitress, Scottlyn, was phenomenal. She was super friendly and was gracious to accommodate all of the menu customizations requested by our family of four. Five stars for Scottlyn's outstanding customer service! All in all, our family enjoyed our dining experience and recommend Coconut Grill as a great place to go for a relaxing, flavorful evening meal.

Punululu omlet, Coconut banana pancake, fresh papaya
    Ariana J.

This was right next to the hotel we stayed at Hotel so we came here for breakfast. We got seated right away. The omelet punulu was literally so bland that my hubby and I couldn't eat it. But we were hungry so we ate. No salt, no pepper, no seasonings, nothing. The 3 stars is for CBP the coconut banana pancake. This was so yummy and topped with macadamia nuts. So unique. They first cook it and then bake it. Makes the pancake so crispy and crunchy while the insides are quite soft and moist. Must try! Fresh papaya was very fresh. Yum. Service was fairly slow. Coffee was ok.

    Fish and chips
    Greg H.

Stopped in as we were aimlessly wondering on Valentines Day. Lots of places and zero availability and they worked us in. The fish and chips was a good beer battered crunch and fries were hot. I enjoyed the presentation and overall taste. The steamed veggies were lackluster and better had they just been left off. Wife had the prime rib sandwich and it was okay. I would say the menu was limited and not a lot of choices.

    Benedict

Just awful. They barely had any people on a Sunday brunch. Still took them 1 hr after ordering to put food in our plate. Only to hard boiled eggs on a Benedict. Then the waitress didn't offer to write off the bill despite not eating it. Avoid this place.

Does the restaurant have air conditioning for dining?

The windows were all open when we were there and it was not hot at all. It was end of August when we were there.

What time do you serve breakfast until?

Breakfast is served till 10:30am, but would call to double check the times.

We spent two and a half months planning this event. My club treasurer and I confirmed the price on seven different occasions--five times over the phone and twice in person. Each time, we were quoted just over $600 with about a $110 in tips, which we paid in full two days before the party. However, the day before the event, we were told there was a miscalculation and we needed to pay another $400. Because our students had only fundraised the amount we were originally quoted, we had to remove two people from our party and downgrade our menu which did not include drinks anymore. We requested to bring our own drinks due to the last-minute budget change, but we were told we could "only bring alcohol and no outside sodas and juices." It was disappointing that this was the only accommodation offered to a group of high school students. During the party, we also encountered several cleanliness issues. We found hair in the food and cockroaches in the rice, as well as on the walls and near the buffet area. I am totally not joking about the food; I was shocked by what we saw. The servers were very polite and apologized when we let them know, but it was a major concern for us. I understand that accidents happen, but this was a very difficult situation for our club after so much careful planning. Personally, I will not be eating here again for a long time.

The reviews sold me. And then... reality arrived. The server was lovely but clearly trapped in a one-person reenactment of Kitchen Nightmares. Two of us ordered dinner at the same time. My partner received their entrée. Then their sides. Then time to reflect on life. I received... nothing. Not even "sorry"' from the kitchen. Only the server had the decency to acknowledge the mess. About 40 minutes later--after my partner had fully completed dinner, digestion, and emotional closure--they brought my entrée. I asked for extra veggies and "Thai hot." What I got was Mild Regret of neither with a garnish of panic: two heaping tablespoons of raw hot peppers dumped on top like a dare. That's not "Thai hot," that's "we forgot and now we're improvising." At this point, I asked for it to go, because I wasn't about to sit there eating solo like I missed the memo that dinner was a relay race. Also: summer rolls require basil. Basil. Not iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce belongs in a 1994 suburban salad bar, not in Thai cuisine. There was zero concept of food arriving together, or being cooked to order, or basic culinary logic. That said--I'm a generous soul. They need a chance to redeem what was, without exaggeration, a masterclass in how not to run dinner service.

We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. It seemed like one of those desserts that are premade unfortunately, and we wish we hadn't ordered this dessert.

It was a proper salad with fresh local greens, sliced cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, and another white shredded vegetable that I think was radish. My chicken was delicious and the portion of that was generous as well. I tasted my husband's curry but didn't really like the flavor. He could have packaged it all differently, but I know those to-go containers are not the greatest for the environment, so that must have been the factor. But the beef patty and chicken... they were large, so we were really looking forward to them. But they were so bland. Not even salt or pepper, no sauce, garlic powder, nothing. We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.
