Coconut grill was a nice place to eat in Hilo right by Ice pond. We got a great view of the ocean and a nice window table. The waiter took over 30 minutes to come take our order but he was apologetic. After that the food took about an hour to get to us and it was too long because we were so hungry especially my son. Our food was really good, the pina coladas were so refreshing and tasty. I loved the kalua pork and I also got a big house salad. I got poi wish I tried for the second time. I don't really like poi, lol the lominsalmon I gave to my husband. My son got the kids sliders . We had a really nice time. Haven't been to Hilo in 20 years! My husband's nephew got married in Waikiki, decided to go to the Big Island. There was a young lady who actually was filling in because she usually had gone home from the morning shift and she's learning to become a teacher, she was excellent. On a recent visit to Hilo, we stayed at the Hilo Seaside Hotel. The hotel offers many packages for kama'aina, one of which included free breakfast for each guest. When I'm in a place to judge beer, breakfast is honestly the most important meal of the deal. I was happy we had this option and it really didn't disappoint. Coconut Grill is attached to the hotel but is a separate restaurant. They have breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus, as well as pupus and a bar. This review is solely for breakfast, which we ate here four times. The breakfast coupons for hotel have 3 options: a traditional meat & eggs plate, a pancakes plate, and a healthy fruit & yogurt selection. We tried all three; the meat & eggs were my favorite as they came with a starch and fruit. Also included with coffee or tea. Food is made-to-order and fresh; I love simple meals like this. The actual restaurant is comfortable during the day with natural lighting and big open windows. It has an old beach vibe, lots of character. Of note are the tidal wave lines painted on the windows. Staff was a mixed bag; we had a fantastic server, an okay one, and an awful one. It's a nice case study that service is always inconsistent. If you're staying at this hotel or any nearby, this is a great way to start your adventure day! read more

Whilst staying at SCP Hotel in Hilo this restaurant literally couldn't be any closer. They have a glass door that literally looks into the hotel lobby. Yet, this restaurant isn't affiliated with the hotel. Instead. The convenience of proximity makes it a no brainer choice to eat here when you don't want to go anywhere to eat. We looked at the other Yelp reviews, saw the mixed reactions but reluctantly came here. Was Coconut Grill worth the risk? Service - Island Time First of all let's make sure we all know "Island Time" is a real thing. Just like people are more relaxed and chill on the islands the same can be put on for service at restaurants. Servers take a little longer to get to you and food doesn't always get ordered the quickest. It's not necessarily that the service is bad, just relaxed. Coconut Grill's servers fit this bill so if you are hungry remember this so you don't Hulk out. Menu - Extensive The menu is a huge selection of different things from different cuisines. You can find pastas, steak, loco mocos, sandwiches, and more. If Robert Irvine was here he would say they need to simplify their menu but if you like a large selection of different food you'll appreciate the range. Food - Mixed reactions We came here twice, one for dinner and the second time for happy hour which is every day from 2-5 PM. We got the habachi chicken, prime rib dip, popcorn shrimp, kalbi beef plate as well as sliders, wontons, mahi mahi nacho sliders, and the mud pie. From all of this the highs were anything grilled. The habachi chicken was absolutely amazing in flavor. The char on the outer parts were the exquisite caramelization of their marinade which paired perfectly with the rice. The kalbi was good too although it is definitely Hawaiian style kalbi, not Korean. The prime rib dip was a bit more like a cheesesteak with cheese and peppers in it but with a sumptuous au jus each bite was perfect. Perfectly cooked prime rib that gave great mouth feels. The mud pie was absolutely incredible. Just the right amount of coconut flavoring, slightly stiff cookie base, and creamy cookies & cream ice cream in the middle I think everyone's eyes rolled back at least once whilst eating it. A perfect ending to any meal. However, I see why the lows can be lows. The kimchi they serve is bland and has no spice. The rice can be hard. The wontons were just okay in flavor. And though they call them sliders the kabli sliders were just pieces of kabli on a scoop of rice while the mahi mahi nacho sliders were a piece of mahi mahi on a triangle chip with a black bean salsa. Though nothing is inedible the excitement to eat can be lost quickly. Conclusion - Great but choose wisely Overall the restaurant is a good place to eat for casual dining. Lots of selection of food with a great mix of island favorites. The food that is on the grill are fantastic while some of the side items or specific dishes can be a total waste of calories. If you find something delicious you will have a great time but if you don't choose wisely, this place will leave you wanting more. You have been warned. read more

The staff was very friendly and our waitress got us situated quickly for a great dine-in experience. Went in for a light dinner and dessert. We had the crab and artichoke dip appetizer. It was OK but the pita chips were overcooked and I didn't see or tast much crabmeat in the dip. We originally came here because we we're staying at the hotel next door. We were very happy with our choice. The complimentary banana bread was delicious. The first day I had the Lilikoi French toast and it was yummy. I wasn't able to finish because the bread was so thick (in a good way, filled with custard). Hubby, daughter and I dined here for dinner before checking in our hotel. There was a happy hour menu. Hubby ordered spinach artichoke dip, fried zucchini, kalbi ribs with rice, and steak and tomatoes with onions and mushrooms. Everything was delicious. I had a Pele's lava flow. This was good and had strawberry syrup with a coconut slush on top. I didn't taste the alcohol much but this was good. Hubby wanted to order dessert so he got the naughty hula mudd pie. This was good as it had the ice cream that had a crust that had coconut pieces on the crust. I was so full by the time we got to dessert so I only had a few bites. When our server came back to collect the plates, she dropped it on the table and some food landed on my daughter. I had to help her clean up as the waitress apologized and gave us free dessert. Nice. Finding a good breakfast on the Hilo side has defiantly been a challenge! We have used Yelp and TripAdvisor and found that a lot of what the reviews say aren't true for us. I know I am picky, I expect good food when reviews say how wonderful a place is. Today we found our breakfast place!!! Thank goodness for the recommend from Cheryl and Isaac! Coconut Grill for the WIN!!! The staff is so amazing too, all of them making sure everyone has water, coffee etc. Our server was amazing and took such good care of us. If you visit the Hilo side and are looking for great breakfast food this is the spot! She said the baby in the high chair cannot sit on the outside because she blocking the fire lane. WTF... then why did she allow us to be seated there in the first place? So we tried to move the baby on the inside and have an adult sit on the outside. She then says cannot. Cannot block the fire lane. Sista gotta learn how to communicate effectively like say, "I apologize the fire lane may not be blocked" PERIOD before allowing us to sit on those two tables cuz she obviously knew the fire lane may not be blocked . Then Sista tried to put 6 of us on the round table and 3 on a separate table as originally intended. Unbelievable‼ After all this, I said we not eating hea, and we bounced. It was good service and good food. Would recommend this place. Clean. We were there in the early afternoon on a Monday.

First impression isn't very appealing from the entrance. Messy and broken I'm guessing bar / coffee / sink area. Staff talk loudly to each other from across the room so it seem like a cafeteria setting. During our visit all the door were left open so the road noise also echoed through the place. We were seated and 1 table next to us had to-go containers on it the other has stacks of menus and the other has cleaning products? The Food - I ordered the steak & mahi mahi special for $20. Only seen Kona and Maui beers on tap, don't seem to be supporting local brewery. The food was delicious and unexpected. Steak was cooked as ordered and mahi mahi perfectly crusted. Garlic mash potatoes with steamed vegetables. Food was good but servers and atmosphere was less desirable. For the prices they could clean the place up. read more

So, our last night here on the big island and we got a late start to grab a bite (6pm). Pineapples was our first stop,(too long a wait) then to the temple bar, same thing. Ended up at coconut grille. Not crowded. Yeah! Our waiter was friendly and seated us quickly. The restaurant didn't appear to be very busy although there was one large party of about 12. We ordered a couple of drinks that showed up in a timely manner and ordered a beef dip with the onion rings and the giant coconut shrimp. The drinks weren't impressive and we didn't even finish the lava flow. The food seemed to take longer than usual and the waiter did stop by to say he was waiting on the shrimp. It showed up and all the food was Luke warm. Quite disappointed. If he was waiting on the shrimp, I would have expected it to be super hot out of the fryer. Not so. Onion rings, aujous dip also room temp. We didn't even finish the onion rings and i rarely leave food left on my plate. Good marks for our waiter. Fail on the food. Better off heading across the street to Ponds. Or head over to Ken's. We went there at least twice. read more
