Went here for dinner the night after the tsunami warning. A bit short-staffed and service was slow. Had the furikake chicken katsu with rice.A generous portion, but the side of steamed vegetables was very small. However, the garlic butter rolls were delicious. Went with a big group and everybody loved the food. Got the bleu cheese burger-GREAT! Salad bar was minimal but we arrived around 8pm. Service was slow-took almost 10 minutes to get a table (plenty of space) and another 10 to get an adult beverage. However, our server was super nice and accommodating. read more

Was there in March of 2014; went to the Coconut Grill for breakfast on a Friday morning. We had stayed at the Hilo Seaside hotel and figured on trying the grill because it was right there, then we could get on with our day and head out. It's noting spectacular to look at - (which kind of appeals to me - I like finding hole in the wall restaurants) - and the staff was nice enough - but the food - oh lordie - dat fried rice man... it haunts my dreams. I remember walking in - smelling something AWESOME, saw a family at a table near the door where we walked in had ordered the fried rice and myself and the two other people in my group (my hubby and a friend) all agreed that we weren't sure what that was but boy! did we wanted it! I honestly can't remember much else about my food. I think it was good. I'm pretty sure we all liked what we ordered. All I remember is the Hilo Fried Rice was unlike any fried rice that I had had before. It was slightly sweet, slightly salty, enjoyably savory and DELICIOUS! 10/10 - would go back and get more nom-tastic fried rice. read more

First off, the service was not good, had to ask for everything even though they were not busy. Secondly, the food was average and not warm. Third, and most importantly, my friend became very ill (vomiting and diarrhea) within a few hours after eating there!! We live in the area and will NEVER eat there again! We come here often the prime rib was awesome as always in the past for a little while the prime rib was getting thin like teriyaki meat.We stop coming here for awhile then it got back to how it used to be.The crab serving got way less and then they got generous portions again.Tonight our crab didn't look appetizing at all it was prepared with some seasoning looked unappetizing kinda dirty Didn't taste good at all!I don't appreciate that there food is not consistent disappointed with our dinner. read more

So now that I'm a resident of Hilo/Puna District I will start writing some reviews. First one Coconut Grill. We were going to pay our gas bill and wanted to stop somewhere for lunch. On the way we saw Ponds but looking at yelp I saw Coconut Grill (which is right across from Ponds) so we decided to give the Grill a try. My husband and I both had a taste for a burger and this place did not disappoint. I had the Kahuna (bacon cheese avocado and BLT) and my husband had the black and blue ( blue cheese bacon) both were done exactly the way we ordered and each burger had 2 pretty thick slices of bacon. The hamburger meat itself was tasty and I believe each burger was 6oz if not more. The burgers also came with your choice of waffle fries fries and one other choice. I got the fries hubby got the waffle fries both were great! Also the soup of the day was ginger chicken it sounded interesting so we decided to try a cup. It was so good my hubby decided to get his own. This place is nothing fancy but it's clean and the service was friendly. They also have a salad bar but it didn't look like anything special. A few desserts looked interesting the Mac Nut tart and the deconstructed banana cream pie we were too full to try them maybe next time. They also serve alcohol and have other dining options other sandwiches a few different entrees. We'll be back to try these also. After our lunch we were so full it was nice to just step out of the restaurant and walk along the bay. read more

Friendly, quick service. Very good garlic bread to start. Decent list of hawaiin beers, but nothing to big. Very good burger. The seafood platter special was good. The mahi mahi was surprisingly Excellent, but the lobster and shrimp were alittle tough. Nothing terrible though, still good, but maybe a different guy in the back would do a bit better on those two items. Overall very good experience and when I come back in March I will visit again. The kalbi SUCKED! I thought I was in the mainland like Oklahoma when my plate came. The portion of kalbi was skimpy-so much so that the plate looked empty. It came with only ONE scoop rice. Now what local restaurant gives only ONE scoop rice?! The potato salad tasted good but was such a small portion it was gone in 2 bites! To be fair, the salad bar wasn't as bad as other reviewers have said. The lettuce bowl was full of greenlead lettuce that was fresh. The other things in the bar were average but not gross. My wife's prime rib was good. not great but she enjoyed it. I've had the barbecue ribs there too and that dinner was filling. Their prime rib sandwich is the best I've ever had, so I don't know what went wrong with the Kalbi plate. read more

I usually read the reviews to make my decisions but not add my own reviews. In this case, I couldn't help but to add to help others. I was looking for a quick meal near the hotel. Most reviews seemed positive but was cautious because an equal number not so positive. I guess I should have paid attention to the negative reviews. Service was slow even not though the place was not crowded. Decided on the prime rib based on positive reviews. Should have picked something else. It came pretty quick despite the advertisement as being slow roasted. It was not the quality of meat that I am accustomed to. Added 1 trip to the salad bar. Pretty plain and the dish they gave me was only a bread/cup saucer. Held out for the desserts. They seemed the best choice of the menu. Never expected dessert to take 25 minutes to prepare. It took longer than my prime rib. Oops, hold that thought. It never came. Cancelled that part of my order and asked for the bill. At least they compensated by deducting my glass of wine. I ate here because I was staying at the hotel. The happy hour is great, friendly service from Scottlyn and good choices of cocktails and pupus. The restaurant has a delicious menu and Elizabetta gave the extta mile to keep me well serviced. Drinks and food were served fast and the atmosphere was relaxing. It can get crowded at peak dinner times but the family oriented clientelle was very well behaved. I will stay here again and eat here as well. read more

Our experience at Coconut Grille was ok. We drove to Hilo last minute on Sat night because everywhere in Volcano was full. The decor at this place was a bit dated, so we didn't expect too much. Our waiter was a hoot...it seems like he enjoyed some sort of herbal refreshment before coming to work because he was very relaxed! He didn't really seem to care or know what was going on around him, but that made him entertaining to watch. Our food was better than expected. My husband got the prime rib sandwich with cheese, dipping sauce, and fries. I wish I had ordered it because it was quite tasty! I chose the coconut shrimp which had some interesting flavor. The dipping sauce was very spicy and flavorful. I got a side of sauteed veggies, garlic mashed potatoes (which were very dry and not flavorful) as well as a grilled pineapple slice. Not bad, but not incredibly good either. For dessert, we split the lava cake which is a huge tube-shaped brownie decorated with whipped cream, mac nut ice cream, and strawberry sauce. It was absolutely huge and we ate way too much of it! Very tasty and a bit pricey. All in all, I wouldn't make the drive out for this restaurant, but if you're in the area, it's not a bad choice. read more

Very BAD service. We were not acknowledge right away. Then five minutes later, a lady seated us just to say your waihelp will be right with you. That same lady came back and say, "I guess, I will be your server." She took our order very reluctantly. Then right before we ended our meal, our "Real" server appeared. Everything that could go wrong did. Had to send back the 3 Long Island ice teas that were ordered in the beginning by my Mom, Aunty and boyfriend, they all came out different shades, lacking consistency and flavor. Boyfriend then ordered a Mai tai and the pineapple juice tasted rancid, so we had to send that back too. For dinner we ordered a $28 crab and NY steak dinner to share. Crab was obviously frozen then cooked and then refrozen and reboiled at least once or twice because the shells were almost impossible to open they were so soft, plus the meat was still cold or room temp in most of it. The melted "butter" had a short grey hair floating in it! The medium rare steak was medium well and so dry we had to drown it in ketchup. We had tons of mystery oil on the plate. Not sure if it came from the steak or veggies. Our waitress, although nice, dropped plates while trying to clear the table. And to top it off my boyfriend just spent the last fifteen minutes throwing up with chills and cold sweats since we got home. We're thinking it was the pineapple juice because its the only thing we didn't share. If it wasn't my boyfriends great grandmothers birthday we would have made a big deal about how horrible everything was. Never going back and hoping no one else wastes their time or money. This would make the perfect nominee for that TV show Kitchen Nightmares! read more

ugh, why do I keep coming back? Maybe it's the casual island setting and beautiful bay window view of ice pond. Maybe it's the friendly, upbeat service, and prompt soda refills. Maybe it's the outrageously large desserts. It's definitely NOT their main entrees. It's good for 1-2 bites, and then I'm over it. I recently had the furikake seared ahi, and I ordered it rare. 2 generous pieces came to me well done on a mountain of tasteless veggies. My first bite was the most disappointing experience I've had in a while, as the fish tasted old and spoiled. I swirled it around in the watery teriyaki sauce in hopes of saving it, but with no luck. I also hoped my stuffed baked potato would make up for it, but that tasted old too. I'm not usually one who sends food back because food should be cooked to order to begin with. Also the food service was painfully slow. We were there for a good 2 hours and there were only 3 other tables in our section. I really don't know why I choose this place every now and then, but I won't be returning any time soon. read more

Rice only with the Kalbi, any other starch choice would cost extra - whaaaat? Not everyone likes rice, especially not me. After 45 minutes, waitress asked us if we were ready to order. We would have been had we been given any menus. Shoestring french fries are about 1 1/2 wide strips of deep fried potato. Really good except that I was expecting shoestring french fries. Pork ribs were good. 4 people with me ordered Prime Rib and 3 of them were not cooked as requested. The 4th didn't get hers until 15 minutes after everyone else got their main courses. Don't know what was happening in the kitchen but they were definitely short on wait help. Our waitress was nice but pretty frazzled since she seemed to be handling the entire restaurant on a Friday night by herself. The mud pie was great and I'd go back there for dessert only and not during the dinner hour. I can't imagine ever going back there again for a regular meal. read more
