Extremely tasty but I was a little disappointed with the circumstances (just a little bit). We called and made reservations, stating it was for my birthday. We got there (in a freak snowstorm) and they had no record of our reservation- but worked it out. They stuck us in a small table in the corner with zero view (remember this restaurant is sitting in front of a beautiful waterfall) and then spoke nothing of my birthday. View of the Spokane river while eating in this historic location = winning. Service, food, ambiance- all stellar. I had the seared jumbo Novia Scotia scallops with Ahi Tuna Tartar and Tobiko Caviar. This dish can accurately be described as a 'party in your mouth'. Wine selection was nice with some very reasonable offerings- one from where I am from Mendocino County CA. All dishes were fantastic. I think a steak had to go back as tough but they were really nice about it. They have a sampler plate with grilled tenderloin and a crab and artichoke dip that was a true delight. Lots of seating so you should get a table as a walk in but if you want the best view make a reservation. From the restaurant you can walk through the park or over the bridge- everything is right there- your in the heart of it baby! For special occasions with a group this place wins over the melting pot because of the location and the visuals while eating. The food was good, not great. This place must be riding on its former reputation, as we were not impressed. And why did it take an hour and three quarters to cook our steaks!! They saw we had 5 adults and 4 children under 11 years old who were famished. You try making excuses to them as why we kept waiting and waiting for our food. Was looking somewhere convenient and close to the mall. One quick hope on the scooter and we were at Clinkerdagger. Since we walked in staff was super friendly and super helpful. Great ambiance, decent service, good food but VERY pricy.

First, a bit of background (skip down if you want the nitty gritty): Clinkerdagger opened in 1974 to take advantage of Spokane's Expo '74 (which I attended as a wee-lad). Originally named Clinkerdagger, Bickerstaff & Pett's Public House, the restaurant was the third in a chain that began in Seattle. At the height of its run, I believe there were restaurants in eight cities in the northwest and Alaska, including one in my current home of Edmonds. I've eaten at many of them. Their signature prime rib, garlic bread and burnt cream are the stuff of legend. When I lived in Spokane working for KREM-TV, my wife (who worked at rival KXLY) and I dined here often. I found myself back here while moving my son to WSU recently. While the owners have changed as well as the name (just "Clinkerdagger"), the meals and ambiance are the same if not better. If it's a good day, don't miss the opportunity to sit outside to see the full view of the Spokane River and Riverfront Park. The restaurant is inside The Flour Mill, which was in its day, a working mill that used the river to power its giant grinders. When you arrive you'll notice the beautiful old wood and un-even flooring (heads up if you use a wheelchair, it will be a bit bumpy). I recommend making reservations, but if you didn't and there is no room, the bar is a great place for appetizers and drinks. My son and I were seated inside, by choice as it was sizzling hot outside. Our waiter was extremely courteous (almost to the point of being obnoxious, but I was in a good mood and appreciated his energy. You on the other hand, may not). My drink order came out fast, as did our appetizers, the artichoke and crab dip. It was outstanding. Too bad my son doesn't like crab. I had to eat it all myself ;-) We ordered a side of garlic bread for him. As I have written in previous reviews, he's a bread connoisseur and this rated top on his chart. For our main course, my son got the prime rib. You may wonder about size. Clinkerdagger offers three sizes; petite cut $29.95, regular cut $36.95, and Clinkerdagger's cut $40.95. My son is a big eater, but the petite was perfect. He said it was cook to perfection and the seasoning was on point. I went for the grilled smoked sirloin & jumbo prawns. A fine meal to be sure, but the sirloin was a bit tough. A product of the cut and not the chef, IMHO. We were too stuffed to have dessert, but you have to try the signature burnt cream, which I have had many times on past visits. Heavenly! read more

I had a lovely dinner here the other night. The view overlooking the river is wonderful. The service was warm and welcoming. The menu is a wide range of strong American food from calm chowder to iceberg wedges to meatloaf to prime rib. What's more they had a full page of less traditional and more contemporary specials. I had the lobster bisque, which was very good, and a prime rib. My only regret was that I knowingly took the last slide of prime rib which was a solid medium when I had wanted medium rare. While I loved it, I probably should have switched to something else. (Or shown up earlier and got some medium rare.) My friend had the onion soup, the scallops, and then a slice of cheesecake and was happy with it all. Strong by-the-glass wine list. Fantastic views, great service and good food. This place is located right along the river in Spokane with a view of the falls, which are amazing and claims to be a Spokane landmark. It definitely appears to be the remnants of an old mill. The interior of the building is almost a nice as the view of the falls, old and comfortable. The menu is large with a nice selection of seafood and steaks and a variety of other food. The staff was quick, friendly and efficient. Anyhow we had a large number of people during lunch which they were quick to accommodate. We ordered some oysters, which they could not tell us which ones they were but they were extremely tasty nevertheless. All of our food came out in the standard amount of time, but my friend's steak was over-cooked and it truly was. He sent it back and obviously it was going to take time to recook a steak to medium-rare, but by the time he got it back most of us were done with lunch. They did bring us a free crème-brulee, but no mention of crediting the bill or bringing a few dessert items. Just one item for a table of 6. Overall this is a nice place and good food. But for the price and quality of the food I thought it was a little on the steep side. For one thing, if you are going to serve oysters you should know what you are serving. Our server did say he would find out for us, we told him "don't worry about it." The steaks said they were locally sourced, but no mention of USDA prime or Wagyu. For 40 bucks plus I can go to the best steak houses in Seattle during lunch and have a USDA Prime steak for the same price. My fish I ordered was good, but laid on a bed of lettuce that was wilted from sitting too long under the heat lamp. It also said it came with potatoes but I think I might have had 12 of them and they were small. So go for the views, order some appetizers and drinks and then head to a different restaurant for dinner or lunch like Wild Sage in Spokane. read more

The line for Queen of Sheba was out the door, so we decided to take a chance and see if Clinkerdagger was looking any better. It wasn't, but a table fortuitously opened in the lounge area, and we grabbed it without hesitation. In researching potential restaurants to visit in Spokane, Clinkerdagger stood out, both because of its projected higher-class atmosphere, and also because of the absolutely ridiculous name. We started the meal with the king crab artichoke dip, a fancier take on a familiar appetizer, that provided some substance beyond what I was used to in similar appetizers of other restaurants. The meal progressed to a soup of the day, a shrimp gazpacho. I don't think I've ever tried the soup before, nor have I really gotten beyond the whole soup = hot thing. However, the umami-laden tomato based was topped with some cucumber and diced red onion in a way that I found surprisingly great, and I sucked it down. The specialty of the house - as it should be in any other steakhouse - was the prime rib, a dry-aged piece of Angus cooked in a salt crust. I enjoyed it very much, finding there was enough fat to keep everything moist and flavorful without dominating the dish. The au jus kept things lubricated, too. I thought the fry job on the onion strings was a little sloppy, resulting in a slightly greasy product, and the mashed red potatoes were rich and good enough for the dish. Because they're in season, I ordered a shared side of asparagus, but I found that some of the stalks were a bit woody at the ends, indicating a need to trim a bit off the bottom. I found them a little undercooked for my personal taste, but they were consistent with the other asparagus I've had at other restaurants in the city. The only reason I don't want to give Clinerdagger a fifth star is the price, which had to be about $85 with the above foods and two glasses of wine. I'm not entirely sure of the price, though, because the gentleman sitting at the table next to us was generous enough to pay for our meals once he learned we were in the military. I am appreciative, though feel guilty for racking up such an expensive tab, which certainly must have been over $150 with the three diners in our party combined. Our family has celebrated every special occasion here for 35 years so it was a natural choice this past weekend for my birthday and Mother's Day. Despite the familiar face of the long-time hostess and the beautiful view, not much more was signature, classic Clinkerdaggers. Our server was nice enough, but had very little knowledge of the special Mother's Day menu and mistakenly told us I got a free dessert for my birthday when it really only includes burnt cream or a mud pie (I ordered Key Lime pie and paid for it in more than one way). Later she enlightened us with the sad news that RUI sold the restaurant last year and let's just say it has nose dived from what it was. I'm sad for anyone who never tried the real thing; they have no idea what a compromise this new version is. We started with a very measured pour of Pino Gris and then split the meagerly portioned and overdressed pea salad. My mom ordered the classic Chicken Dijon which tasted all kinds of wrong with tiny, overly fried poor quality chicken pieces and barely any mashed potatoes. But believe it or not, my inedible entree paled in comparison. I took a risk, I admit it, but ordered a $46 halibut filet that was described as Halibut Sorrel and came with celery purée, bacon and apples which I assumed were all sautéed. Wrong! Totally raw, bitter, chopped grannie smiths, no bacon whatsoever and a small little pool of purées celery with perhaps a tad bit of sorrels mixed in. Mind you, the server told me Sorrels were mushrooms (um, no those are morels) and I felt too bad for her to clarify. The halibut was terribly overcooked and again, meager. For $46! In Spokane! Oh well, I prayed my favorite "free" key lime pie would remedy the disaster but it too changed and for the very worst. Yes, it was green, but didn't remotely taste like lime. Much to my relief they beautifully garnished the plate with a ruggedly cut wedge of lime that I squeezed dry to no avail. The pie was still bad. RUI, you not only sold a gem, but you tragically killed it too. We will not return. read more

Great combination of ambience, setting, food, and service. Ambience: Nice decor, warm feeling, wood paneling, great relaxing and classic feel. Setting: In old flour mill, and right by the river. Really great setting to have Spokane "then and now". Food: Creative and inspired dishes, such as santa fe corn bread with orange blossom honey butter (must-get, really), or the nova scotia scallops with ahi tuna tartare and bit of caviar. Service: We had excellent service (was here with my aunt and uncle who are locals, I am from California), the waiter chose our by-the-glass wines for us to pair with our entrees and was extremely attentive. We were so excited to try Clinkerdagger. The first time we came, the wait was two hours, so we made a plan to visit again on our next Spokane trip and made a reservation. Calamari was awesome, but the server was a little slow getting us straws (no kids cups for the kiddos). We waited for our steaks (med and med rare) and couldn't believe how tough the ribeye was. The flavor was charred and under seasoned, not what I would expect from a steakhouse at all. The manager came by and offered to replace them with prime rib. By the time our meals were replaced, the kids were over hungry and over tired. The server offered to box up our dinner. When we got home all that was in the box was our prime ribs. I went here for a graduation dinner. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. We had requested an outside seat, but weren't seated under any umbrellas. This seemed odd that the hostess wouldn't clarify what section was available in the outside seating. We ordered the prawns to start. They were poached in a white wine, and served with two sauces. They were delicious. The wedge salad was also delicious. The blue cheese dressing was one of the best I have ever had. I ordered the filet mignon, and ordered it medium rare. It was a little undercooked. It instead of a warm-red center, it was very red and cool in the center. It also had an odd flavor to it. The truffle sauce was extremely bitter. The veggies served with it were also undercooked. The rest of the table really enjoyed their meals. One ordered the halibut cheeks and the other ordered the prime rib. The best thing On the table was the huckleberry lemonade and the garlic butter ciabatta. Ultimately, I think I would go back for the view and order something else. read more

Another great meal at Clink's! I think this is one of the best places to eat in the Spokane area. Very much enjoyed the great, attentive service from start to finish. The Caesar salad was very good, and a nice portion. My sirloin, ordered medium rare, was just a tad into medium but still delicious and flavorful. I decided to also have a lobster tail, which I would say was the highlight of the meal. The finale was chocolate fudge cake that came with a chocolate syrup that was outstanding. My husband had the bleu cheese salad, which was nice and crunchy with a good amount of bleu cheese, New York strip, lobster tail, and creme brûlée to finish. Will never go back. I have allergies. Within 10 minutes of being seated --they went nuts. Eyes puffed up, sneezing. I surmised they obviously NEVER vacuum or dust. It took 20 minutes for our waitress to come to the table. Another 10 to get WATER. Another 15 for her to get our drink and dinner order. So 45 minutes in and we began our 40 minute wait for our dinner. 2 rare steaks and 1 salmon. 40 min for RARE. Steaks came Medium Well. Salmon came MW and dry as he!! too. Sent steaks back. I kept and ate dry salmon because I was hungry. Steaks came back blue rare (sign of a novice chef) but family ate what they could. They were well seasoned. Mgmt was very nice and treated us to 3 free desserts so we could at least eat one course together. Even after all that service was slow and inattentive. Very disappointing based on reviews and prices. Thank you to mgmt for trying but at $40+ per steak I don't want to have to send anything back. And I'm still craving GOOD salmon! read more

Oh Spokane, WA natives and vacationers... how lucky are you to have this restaurant on your riverfront! And, thank you YELP'ers for the reviews that made me visit this goldmine. If weather dictates it, your first choice is to sit outside and take in the sounds and views of the river. Once you are seated, enjoy taking time to choose what you want from their well laid out menu. If inside is your choice, there are several different types of seating available all of which looked to be comfy and inviting. Might be a good idea to make reservations if its the weekend. Wait staff was very attentive. Never an empty glass, always peaking around the corners to make sure all is good but they don't hover. If your so inclined to have a libations, I whole-heartedly recommend the Manhattan if that is one for you. Onto apps. Everyone has Calamari right? But, does everyone have calamari in a batter that lets you taste the calamari, and then throws in battered artichokes to call it Country Fried Calamari?! Nope. And the Clink does this to perfection! They provide two sauces as well... your typical seafood cocktail sauce and a garlic sauce. My opinion, tell them to keep the cocktail sauce and bring two garlics! For the main courses, the gf ordered the Braised Short Ribs on a recommendation from a fellow customer. According to her, they nailed it. Fall off the tongs of your fork tenderness with mild seasonings that let you enjoy the flavor of the meat. I engulfed, I mean enjoyed the Pan Seared Shellfish Fettuccine. All the seafood was cooked to perfection and they did not drown nor overly thicken the white sauce. Three pieces of brioche accompany this and yes, you will not want to waste anything that is placed in front of you. We finished up by splitting the Chocolate Indulgence Cake. Indulge you must! And our neighboring table ordered the New York Style Cheesecake with seasonal berries. Yep, you guessed it, huckleberries! I only heard one word after the first bite... Wow! Everything else was a compilation of mmmmm and mmmmmm's. We asked if it was good, and they responded mmmm mmmmm : )! Sort of sums it up right there. I have been putting off writing this review in hopes that in hindsight I would be able to give them a better rating. Sadly, this is being pretty generous so let's get to it. First off, we don't live in Spokane. We were they're celebrating our daughter's college graduation. The this restaurant is nice inside with breathtaking views of the Spokane river. Clinkerdaggers receives a three-star for service, a two-star for price per value, four-star for cleanliness, a three-star for taste. Giving them a 3-star for service is being very generous as it took over an hour to get our food after we ordered. The server was good but after 40 plus minutes they stop serving you water over and over and over again so then we sit with no food and no water. This is NOT acceptable. They brought out the appetizer quickly but we were very disappointed with the size, flavor and presentation. We ordered the calamari and artichoke hearts. It was mostly artichoke hearts and the calamari was not cooked properly (I should've taken a picture). After our appetizers, they brought out some sort of garlic bread that was not replenished once eaten. We ordered several different dishes from shellfish fettuccine, prime rib, American wagyu, halibut and steelhead trout. Each one was good but for the amount of food, temperature of the food when served, and price it was disappointing. The food was served on normal plates with a tremendous amount of empty space on the plate see for yourself in the pictures. Considering we paid between $26 to $36/meal it is outrageous that you do not get a full plate of food. Additionally, when you say that the dish is served with asparagus I don't expect three shavings of asparagus on top of my food or four peas when you say it's served with peas. This is exactly how the halibut was served. These pictures were taken before anybody took a bite. The prime rib was the most expensive dish we ordered and probably the biggest bang for our buck. No flavor, my vegetables were cold, and the mashed potatoes tasted burnt because the intensely charred steak was placed on top of them. As you explore though, you find there are larger places just around the corner that will accommodate large groups. They have outdoor patio spaces that put the sound of the rushing water just a few hundred feet away. The vistas are only the beginning, whether steak and potatoes, pasta, chicken, pork, or just a burger; it's all done with a flare of elegance. It was an evening to be spent outside enjoying the later summer breeze, beautiful river setting and pending rise of the fullmoon. FInding ourselves staying in downtown Spokane and not wanting to drive we walked across Riverfront Park and decided to visit Clinkerdagger as their deck looked like it had a few empty seats which sits prominently overlooking the Spokane River. We were seated promptly in the best seat in the house which was good for my co-worker Eric who had never been to GEG. I have to say that it was awesome relaxing, enjoying some wine while watching the full moon come up and digesting the events of the day. We had an amazing meal...started off with the crab and artichoke app which was exceptional...for main course we had the house burger and halibut cheeks in a cherry and wall wall onion reduction...small salads and some adult beverages. The menu selection was perfect and wine pairings were nice as well. The selection of beer and full bar made it hard to complain... The total experience although a bit pricey was very nice...we paid a bit for the view/setting but on a night like that it was worth it...our splurge for the trip I suppose. I had lunch here yesterday with folks from work. The interior is nice but not fancy; nice view of Spokane falls. Tried the oven roasted crab and artichoke dip along with the grilled teriyaki tenderloins as starters; both were very tasty. I had the Prime-rib dip sandwich; the French roll was crisp on the outside tender on the inside, the prime-rib was dry, it seemed like it was leftovers from the day before. The bacon-Asiago fries where delicious. Others in our group were very happy with their lunch choices. The Banana Foster Sundae and Warm pear bread pudding were both delicious. We had a reservation at 7:15 and it was pretty busy when we got there, so I would definitely recommend placing a reservation before you go! We didn't get seated until about 7:30, but the service was pretty quick after that. The view from our table was so beautiful! We got seated on a corner where there was a red, dim light. It was perfect for a private, romantic birthday dinner. We ordered the Lemon Drop and Lavender Cosmo drinks. They were both amazing! The lemon drop was the perfect amount of sweet to sour. The lavender cosmo was sweet and just a bit sour. The lavender sugar on the rim made the drink taste like candy :) As a starter we ordered the crab and artichoke dip which came hot, cheesy, and with lightly toasted bread. It smelled soooo good when it got to our table, and the taste did not disappoint! Our entrees were the prime rib and the grilled chicken fettuccine. Both were delicious! My pasta was nice and creamy with bits of bacon, bell pepper, and well-seasoned chicken. The prime rib was really juicy and marinated well. It was a 12 oz steak and it was pretty thick too, so he didn't finish it all but we took the rest home! Overall we had a great experience and will definitely be coming back when we're back in Spokane! I would also like to add that they didn't accept my debit card because it didn't have a chip, so keep that in mind. read more

Sadly- this was a bad night for Clinkerdagger... We waited with our friends for 64minutes for our order to arrive... The server kept apologizing saying they were " having issues " in the kitchen.... Our friends from out of town were great sports - the conversation was lighthearted and we made the best of it- Can't comment on the food because we were literally starving by the time it arrived- so - even dirt would have tasted good... Sorry folks, the manager also apologized AFTER we called him to the table- gave us our appetizers for free- the bill was over $200- not returning.... read more
