Shrimp with vegs, pork egg fu, cheese wontons and egg drop and rices

For their category as mostly a take out place, it's easy for me to give them a 5. We've had them half a dozen times and the food is always great. All of it! We have been enjoying camping at the state park close by, and it was an easy choice for our dinner this trip. And you always get to enjoy what you didn't finish the next day. It's fun to try new places, but it's also great to grab something you know will be delicious. This place is very very consistent.

The food here is not good. We ordered $57 worth of food and the majority of it was not edible. I ordered the sweet-and-sour chicken and almond chicken with lo mein for $26. The all of the chicken was just breading. There was no real good amount of chicken in any of the chicken dish. The lo mein was simply noodles and cabbage. My wife ordered a three dinner meal with Kong, pow chicken general Taos chicken and another beef dish with fried rice. She had to throw away the general Taos chicken because it was very chewy and not edible. We ordered this on Saturday, 8 December don't waste your money here the food is basically worthless and they charge you ridiculous prices for it . Check out my chicken pictures to see how much breading is in the chicken and how small the actual like chicken tender things are.

Ma Po Tofu, Beef Egg Roll, Steamed Dumplings, and white rice for the tofu - YUM!!!
    Ellen K.

Ma Po Tofu has become one of my favorite dishes. And really delicious steamed dumplings are hard to find in Spokane. Mr Wok does an outstanding job with both. Since I've been exploring the menu at Hong Kong Express, it was time to test them with my cherished favorites. All I have to say is bravo on the Ma Po Tofu and the steamed dumplings were really good! They don't put ground pork in theirs, but they didn't overdo it with the added peas & carrots. The sauce was mildly spicy (I'm going to ask for more spice next time), was balanced had a nice depth of flavor. The steamed dumplings were delicious packets of tender morsels. The seasoned soy sauce blend was the perfect dipping sauce. Good egg rolls are also hard to find. The beef egg roll was pretty decent. I ordered extra hot mustard because I prefer to mix it with ketchup to dip my egg rolls and some of the dumplings. Overall, I'm really enjoying the food I've ordered from Hong Kong Express!

Small front area. No sit-down dining...

Polarizing place, judging by all the review sites. People like it, or they despise it. Put me in the like category, because this is the NYC-style, greasy, fast take-out Chinese I grew up with back in the Northeast. I'd have been here years ago if I had known that. It is not health food; more of an every-now-and-then diet busting treat. And, I have finally found a joint in our metro that can make Egg Fu Yong like I prefer, with a semi-sweet sauce, as opposed to pasty gravy flavored with 5-spice. That alone will make me a repeat customer. It is a bit squalid looking inside when you order in person, which I'm sure will horrify many. And, don't expect rose petals thrown at your feet for service. They are busy as h*** cranking out orders, and don't have time to be effusive. That doesn't bother me at all--but again--some people will 1 or 2-star'm for that. Nice job, Hong Kong Express. Never, ever, go outta business please...

Almond chicken, pork & broccoli, and bbq pork fried rice

Staying in Spokane this week and a friend recommended Hong Kong Express. Food is amazing!!! We ordered almond chicken, pork and broccoli with pork fried rice, and appetizers: wontons & shrimp dumplings. Everything was great! Beyond great for the dumplings! So simple, but so perfect in flavor. Couldn't take a picture because we ate them too fast. No joke! I ordered on their website, it was easy, and delivery was super fast to our hotel room! Delivery person was polite & masked. Woo hoo, good Chinese food still exists!

They checked in on us regularly without being overbearing, which I really appreciated. The food came out surprisingly fast, even though the restaurant was pretty busy around dinner time. The place itself also seemed clean and well-kept, and you could tell the staff was on top of things despite how busy it was. The workers were all very attentive to every table, which added to the positive experience. While I can't claim to have been to tons…read moreof restaurants in the area, this one made me decide I needed to come back to Spokane to get more of their amazing Corn Bread and try some other places in the area. Let me just say... their cornbread. So good. I was visiting on a work trip and I loved my experience at the restaurant so much I returned the next day with a friend also in town for work. The cornbread is like a dessert even if it's meant to be an appetizer. Now every time I come into town, even if I don't eat at the restaurant, I order at least two cornbreads to take home with me. I will say one time they did burn it and I hadn't realized it til I was already well on my way back to the west side. The most recent time I went about 3 weeks ago the cornbread was not burnt, but I feel like it wasn't AS good as I recalled the other 4 times I went to the restaurant. Next time I'm in the area, I'll opt to eat in the restaurant and enjoy it fresh! Every time I've been, I have had great service. The staff is always kind even if they're slammed! The first time I went I chatted with the bartender since I was alone and sat at the bar. They also have really great drinks! Finally, their bathrooms are nicely decorated! Definitely have recommended this place to many!

But that was all that was great. It seems that everything is cooked on the highest temperature. We got hushpuppies and whipped honey cornbread for appetizers. The hushpuppies were dense and while they lack flavor - I did enjoy the sauce that came on the side. It was spicy and had a nice flavor. Although it was obvious they do fry the hush puppies and fish in the same oil. The honey corn bread was burned and tasted of burnt oil. It was oily and had a strange taste and was overwhelmingly sweet. (You'll find that burnt is a common theme.) My Cajun burger was good but the buns were burned. The meat was juicy and had a nice flavour. The fries were seasoned well and were crispy while being soft on the inside. The pork ribs were decent. The sauce was nice. They weren't fall of the bone tender, but still tender enough. The coleslaw on the side was very sour and spicy. It was more like spicy sauerkraut rather than coleslaw. The seafood boil was underwhelming small especially for the price. The shrimp were overcooked. The clams were very small. The muscles still had beards. The potatoes and corn were cooked nicely. It needed more salt and sauce. The sweet teas came unsweetened and while it did came with sugar on the side - the grains were too big to actually stir in. And I would like the mentioned that my cup of water had black specks floating around in it. All in all - I wouldn't return.
