Incredible service, well-cooked food, and a nice variety. Their dinner specials are always outstanding and their steaks are killer. If you have room for dessert, I would get their hazelnut gelato, its rich ad creamy. I happened to have gotten fish here but the friends that I went with all ordered steaks and cleared their plates. The atmosphere is very nice, and on the colder days, I love sitting by the fireplace. They have no problem with large groups, so if you have to impress some people this restaurant is a great choice. read more

Good dry-aged usda prime steak, available for reasonable prices -much more reasonable than the wet-aged chain steakhouses like ruth chris, mortons, etc and tastes better because they are dry-aged. The porterhouse for two is my recommended go-to dish. Comes pre-sliced with a bit of butter. The side dishes are tasty and very reasonably priced (creamed spinach, mashed). Only thing I am not a fan of is the scorching hot plates they serve the porterhouse on which causes the butter to splatter near/on your shirt and leaves no where to put your sides without cooking them to oblivion, hence the 1 star deduction. The service is outstanding but I don't like the forced valet on weekends - there is plenty of parking not sure why they have it. read more

Came twice after noting the similarity to the famous PL in Brooklyn and my favorite spinoff B&Js in Manhattan, at least in terms of menu selection. That's where the similarity ends. The Canadian bacon was smaller and overcooked both times I tried, and the steaks were passable, but not to the caliber of the aforementioned places. If you want to stay local, Cliffs does the job and the service is great. Can't help but notice the separation in technique though. read more

I came to Cliff's with my girlfriend and her family for her cousins first communion. Since I am not from NJ I cannot comment on the restaurant in relation to other places in the area, but it looked like a standard, used to be a house at some point in its life type of place. Decor was standard, however I was very very pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. Penne vodka came out with chunks of pancetta in it, which is when I knew the food to follow would be good. I had a shell steak and string beans which was delicious. My girlfriend had the salmon which was also very good, and I am not a huge fish fan either. Service was prompt and courteous and they made sure to keep everyone's glass full which is important to me. Before desert was served they even scraped the crumbs off the table. Would return if in the area. read more

There is a reason why they bring out steak sauce with your bread and butter when you get seated - you're going to need it, lots of it. Husband ordered medium rare cowboy steak, I ordered medium - both came out medium well to welll done. We were hungry so we didn't send them back but that's pretty unacceptable for a steak house to mess up so badly. The cut of the meat is thin and it comes out sizzling on a plate. How can they possibly serve it medium rare when it comes out STILL COOKING on your plate? Crab cake appetizers were disappointing, more bread filling than actual crab meat. Creamed spinach as a side was okay. We skipped dessert based on the rest of the meal. Service was adequate, they consistently filled up my water glass without having to ask. We found it interesting that not once throughout the entire time we were there did they check in on how we were enjoying our meal... I think it's because they knew better than to ask... read more

I wish Yelp had the ability to give 0 stars... However, the service was really good. They attended to the needs of my table and continued to keep a watchful eye, of anything were to happen. When a question popped up, and we asked one of the waiters, they immediately went to find the answer, although the answer was dissatisfying. The oysters I ordered as an app, they were sweet and fresh. The salmon I ordered for myself only was okay in seasoning. Not as much punch as I have tasted and seen at other less expensive 'steakhouses'. The rest of my party decided to get the 'porterhouse for four' which was just two steaks!!! Unbelievable! They weren't even that good. They were okay, but definitely not worth the price. $152 for 2 dinky, meh steaks. On a side note, my water had some white flakes in it, and when I asked for another water, they complied, but then looked at my old water incredulously. The place is very outdated and slightly confusing to enter. The plates seemed permanently stained which hindered my desire to eat off of them. The sautéed spinach was mediocre. It was very flimsy and not colored to a good spinach look. However, it's taste was pretty okay. The experience was interesting, but I would rather go to Cafe Italiano even though I've never been there before. Another side note: When we asked for the check they never gave it to us, and we had to ask again until they finally did. Took 15 minutes. read more

This place is truly amazing. I came here with my co workers and the food was absolutely mouth watering. The porterhouse tasted like it came directly from heaven, prepared by chef God himself. Incredibly lit!!!!!! Not to mention the oysters were fresher than a pair of brand new yeezys out of the box. Trust me you will not regret coming here. read more

Unequivocally the finest steakhouse for miles and miles. The setting is intimate, the food is superb, and the service is unmatchable. Truly, the service is beyond accommodating and gracious. Went there on Saturday night was not too busy , but still service overall was very slow. Took about 15 minutes just to get the drink order taken. Not very attentive to table needs. Went there for steaks, but it was a big disappointment for a N.Y. strip, no flavor to speak of, my baked patotoe was not cooked fully, nor was it hot. I had to ask twice to get butter even though I ordered it that way.I have been to most steak houses in NYC, and it stands that you still must go there to get a good steak and service. read more

Atmosphere was nice, white tablecloths ,but there is were it went wrong. I ordered rib steak, the worst steak in my life, I am a cook and I was so disappointed. I also ordered steak fries dry. Went with 2 other people, one who is a regular and has said the steak here is awesome. She was right. Some of the best meat I've had in years. More than Simply Overpriced, BAD! The three major criteria I use to evaluate restaurants are a) food; b) value, and; c) service. Cliffs Steakhouse gets an F across the board. First, the food. Simply tasteless. Things I would NEVER imagine could be bland, they managed. For example, onion soup. In some places it may too salty, in others, they don't use quality cheese, here, it tastes like dishwaters with pieces of boiled or frozen onion pieces. Cheese is of unknown origin- without any flavor whatsoever. The filet mignon on the bone wasn't a bad piece of meat, but once again doesn't appear to have ANY seasoning. Sauteed mushrooms- no way they were sautéed - again, perhaps boiled? Second value. Totally overpriced. They don't bother telling you the prices to their "specials" so this filet mignon on the bone wound up being $48. Everything is ala carte- and so for $6/7 for a 40 cent baked potato that they didn't even bother to put some seasoning on the skin... you have to be kidding. Third, service. So slow, make sure to have your Iphone fully charged because it takes forever to get anything. And they don't even get the order correct. We ordered crabcakes and onion soup--ten minutes after we had finished the crabcakes my husband said, I think they forgot your onion soup--and they had. Too bad I didn't know how bad it was--I wouldn't have reminded them. All in all, one of the worst restaurants I've been to in NJ or NY. Don't waste your money. read more

From the staff to the cozy fireplace, and the Steaks OMG, soooo delicious, I am a huge River Palm fan but I found a gem . Tables not on top of each other, quiet and the service....they can't do enough! We enjoyed a crab cocktail, and the special salad which was beets, arugula and goat cheese for apps. I had a rib eye (so good) along with home fries (don't miss having them) and creamy amazing creamed spinach ! My guest had a Filet Mignon that was the best they ever had! The owner is so friendly and caring, don't miss out on a GREAT steak! I will definitely become a regular!!! read more

I've been here over 5 times. My general comments are as follows: Trying to emulate peter Lugers/Wolfgangs but it can't really compare because their sides and appetizer offerings are just ok and their desserts are pretty bad (cardboard box bad) The porterhouse for 2, 3 etc. is the best thing on the menu but small. The vegetable offerings are bland as is the baked potato, i.e., steamed vegetables and no fixings for the potato. Mushrooms are ok. I'm not one to post about this next comment (read between the lines) but I felt particularly affronted. Was here again for NYE. Had a reservation because it was one of the only places in Bergen county that was available on a few days notice. I wanted to go to river palm (my favorite restaurant) but it was booked long ago. Now to my comment: they placed all the Asian people upstairs in their secondary dining room when there were seats in their main dining room. When they finally placed a non-Asian couple upstairs, they were the only ones to get any service/attention. They got their bread before us even though we were seated for at least 10 minutes before them. The owner came to only their table to ask if everything was ok. Never so much as breathed over at any other table. The waiter (the one for the entire upstairs with four seated tables) only went to their table to check if everything was ok during the meal. He finally checked on ours after we finished the meal. Frankly, the porterhouse for 2 which we ordered medium plus was rare to medium rare and it never cooked to temperature regardless of the hot plates. We would have wanted it cooked to the temperature we ordered but he never bothered to come by. The steak was also extremely fatty and small. We still left a 20% tip but I probably will never set foot at this restaurant again. Other times I've been there, they've never been that busy so nothing was blatant. But I now get the message: we will take your money but we only semi-welcome you here. They probably have no clue they did this or maybe they did it vigilantly, but regardless, it's an underlying tone and I got it. I eat out a lot in Bergen county and NYC and spend a lot of money on food, one of my many indulgences. As Julia Roberts in pretty woman said "big mistake, big, huge!!!" My money will be well spent elsewhere. read more

DO NOT GO HERE. WASTE OF MONEY. FOOD IS LOUSY. See below for the details. I just had lunch here and If I could give this place a zero or negative star rating, I would. I was there with a party of 7 for lunch on a Saturday. We made the reservation expecting that the lunch menu would be available since their website says nothing about it not being available. So we get there and they say only the dinner menu is available. Now this is a farewell meal for me b/c I'm stepping down from being a board member of a small non-profit. We chose this place b/c the lunch menu was reasonably priced ($15-20 entress) and we thought it would be nice order. Instead we show up and they say only the dinner menu is available at 1230pm. I asked if I could order a burger and the waiter says they can't make it. C'mon. What steakhouse can't make a burger? So even though I really wanted to leave, our chairman of the board says it's ok and he wanted to stay even though I knew the meal was not going to be worth it. So onto the meal itself which is the biggest regret of having stayed here besides the lousy service. 1. Bacon Appetizer - If you'd been to Luger's or any of the spin-offs in the city like Wolfgang's or Benjamin's, you'll straight up be mad. The bacon was thin and overcooked. Out of the 7 pieces we ordered, 4 were burnt. And this is a Saturday lunch when the kitchen is not busy at all. 2. French Onion Soup - Good sized portion, but what's the point when it's lousy soup. The soup was sour and vinegary. Disgusting. Might actually have been spoiled, but I didn't want to complain for fear of someone spitting in the rest of my meal. 3. Lamb chops - Over seasoned, super salty. - It came with some sauteed spinach that was ok, but see below why I was annoyed. 4. Sides - Order creamed spinach b/c at most legitimate steakhouses you have to order sides separately. So if the waiter knew my lamb came with sauteed spinach, why didn't he say something when I ordered creamed spinach? He was clearly just trying to pad the bill. - The creamed spinach was awful. It was more like cream of spinach soup. Hardly any spinach in it and it was all cream. Terrible. I actually think it was just flour and milk. Not real heavy cream. 5. Specials (Soft Shell Crab, Sea Scallops) - So 2 people at our table were trying to decide between the soft shell crabs (2pcs) or scallops (4pcs). Instead of one or the other, the waiter offered to make a combo plate. So when it comes out, we're shocked b/c there was 1 soft shell crab and 1 tiny scallop. Seriously, 1 scallop? We complained and they brought out 2 more b/c they clearly knew they were in the wrong. Again trying to bilk us. - They didn't clean the gills from the soft shell crabs. They have no clue how to prepare soft shell crabs. So overall, the food was lousy as well as the service, but I'm just mostly pissed at myself for not leaving when I knew it was not going to be worth it. My wife has been in the bathroom for the last half hour b/c I think she's now sick from the meal. If I don't like a restaurant, I jokingly say one and done. This however was better off none and done. Restaurants like this just have no business being open. They should be closed. read more

I came here for the first time with my boyfriend. The ambiance was very inviting and the staff and owner were exceptionally friendly and attentive, which is a huge plus for me. I had 2 martinis and they were delicious - filled to the top, but yet, not overly strong. Again, this is something I look for in restaurants. As for the food - it was good, but honestly, my one issue is that if you are going to charge that much money for a dish, I expect to have leftovers. The portion sizes are very small for the amount you are spending. For this reason, we probably won't make it a habit to come back, but will again at one point. My recommendation is to just offer more for our buck, as customers value not only quality, but quantity. read more

Too much $ for an attempted upscale steakhouse that doesn't make the grade. I am not sure if they need time or if they just aren't going to get it. Better steakhouses nearby, river Palm & Sofia's . I have eaten at some of the finest steakhouses throughout the New York/New Jersey area (Peter Luger's, Wolfgang's, and the River Palm Terrace to name a few). But parallel to the atmospheres and nourishments of these prestigious restaurants is Cliffs Steakhouse in Englewood Cliffs. I went to Cliffs with an equanimous family to celebrate my birthday, willing to try something new while retaining my love for fine and aged steak. We were warmly greeted by the owner himself, and seated to a lovely table adjacent to the house hearth. The service dived in immediately, pulling the seats out for us as if they were welcoming us to their "home". They followed by taking our drink and wine orders, and offering us the specials. Leaving the perfect time to socialize with my family rather than frequently intervening, it was clear to see their knowledge of the entrees as he described the meals for us. I had decided to go with a Burrata/Tomato special appetizer. It was costly, however it was worth every penny for its amazing taste, perfectly proportioned and assembled. Ah yes, the steak. The steak is up there as one of the greatest steaks I've ever had. It was a little rare, however the sizzling plates allowed me to change it as to any way I preferred. There were no leftovers, despite sharing a steak for three with three people; we all had our share. We also ordered broccoli and mash potatoes, which were equally delicious. For the birthday, I ordered myself a chocolate mousse cake. Best I've ever had, no discussion. My sister ordered the Red Velvet, and that was also splendid. Overall, this restaurant is no joke when it comes to pricing. But there is no denying its quality, elegance, and the time that was devoted to its perfection. For those reasons, I strongly recommend this restaurant. Great meal, great service, and an overall great experience. read more

Have driven past this steak house for years and live close by, but have never dined here until tonight. Do not let the outside of this restaurant fool you. This is truly a steak lovers dream without the "scene" of Bergen County. The quaint restaurant is a perfect backdrop to the delicious food. We had the soft shell crab appetizer. It was served on top of toasted Italian bread with just the right amount of garlic sauce. It was fantastic. We all (4) had filet mignon. All 4 were cooked exactly as ordered, on sizzling plates. It was an excellent meal. We finished with homemade key lime pie that was mouthwatering. The owner came over and asked if we would like Sambuca with our coffee. This was given, free of charge. What restaurant does that anymore. The old school charm and warm feeling you get from this establishment is a rarity these days. We really can't believe all these years we have missed out on this top restaurant. We recommend highly. read more

I have been to this place two times with good experiences. The atmosphere is nice. It's a white tablecloth type of place but has a very laid back casual feel where you don't have to get overly dressed up. I will say that the service was excellent both times. The waiters were there when we needed them and didn't bother us when we ate and presented themselves with class. This is a 'steak in a plate and sides on the side' type place. I've had lobster ravioli which was very good and have also had a rib eye steak which was pretty good. I gave it 3 stars because I have paid the same amounts for steaks at other places and it was better and also the appetizers were very average. It's pricey but I think it's worth a try. I tend to give 3 stars when I like a place but when I've had better. read more

You will pay, but the service is so attentive and food so good that you won't feel that badly about it. The Canadian bacon slab appetizer was really long - wider than the plate. It was hot off the grill and very good. Entrees were T-Bone steak and the special dover sole almondine (not everyone enjoys a steak!). T-Bone was ordered medium rare and came out rare and sliced. With it came a bubbling hot plate (with butter?). The waiter asked if it was ok to cook the steak on the plate and then masterfully and quickly placed each piece onto the hot plate, and then flipped each one and they were all cooked perfectly within a few seconds. The fish was fileted and although it appeared very saucey and heavy it was really light tasting and fresh with the perfect amount of lemon; the almonds on top were plentiful and a nice crunchy complement. It was a special and they do not tell you the prices when they read the specials so you definitely have to ask, which I'm guessing doesn't happen too often here. Ordered steamed asparagus and a very large baked potato for sides. Would have appreciated knowing the fish came with some asparagus, but it was only three stalks so having more was fine. The bread on the table was great -rustic-like with a good crust and soft inside. Ice cream for dessert was so good - tasted like Nastos (a meaningful mention for those who know it). Other choices were the usual cheesecakes, carrot cake, tartufo, etc. It's the type of place where certain clientele expect to have their butts kissed but we were treated very well despite not quite being regulars. The lighting is also "romantic," that is to say, kind of dark but in a good way. There was a personal feel to the service and they seem to strive to remember their customers and make sure you are happy. With all of that, a $40 bottle of wine and generous tip I think we were somewhere just under $200 for two. Did I mention the complimentary after-dinner drinks? Nice. read more

I normally go 2 times to a place to start my review but here it is after the second time. The first time i went there was totally impressed. My second time I was very disappointed the steak was very rare it came out to fast I ordered medium and I expected a little more cooked. I had to rely on the hot plate to cook my meat. I felt I had to eat fast so the hot plate would not cool down to cook my rare meat. The drinks were good. Also my apple strudel was warm on the outside and almost frozen in the inside. read more

Fantastic porterhouse steak for two. It's expensive, but you'll struggle to finish it if you are a normal sized adult with no particular death wish. This is a pretty cozy place, and the lighting is very dim, so it's a great place for date.
