You ever have that feeling of, you know you wrote a review about a place, but can't seem to find it? WT-Fudge. Many of these other 4-5 star reviews mention finding exactly what they needed and or getting helped out of a pickle. If you live in the locale or Chicago North side, you should definitely find that hardware need for your place. Clark-Devon is known by many contractors and handymen that service the North side of Chicago. Why? It's one of the biggest hardware shops. But Jacob you say, it's not bigger than Home Depot or Lowe's. No it's not. When you need something specific for your place it's best to check out local hardware shops first, like this one or any Ma and Pop owned TruValue like hardware store. These shops will house needs for homes and apartments. Such as fuses; not everyone has the standard switched fuse box. There are many buildings around this area that use the old school style of screw in fuses. These can be found here and the cost is minimal in comparison to ordering them at HD or Lowe's. Often sold in boxes of four but singles can be purchased as well. In Sarah J.'s review she mentioned finding odd shaped windows which makes total sense to me since I too found them here. Much easier to have my contractor pick them up here at a specific price than to have Home Depot measure and sell me some comparable windows for a higher price. If you take the time and look in your hood, you'll save yourself some grief. As far as service, I'd say 8 out of 10 times the clerk or associate asked why I needed the parts. Just to see what kind of job it was and whether they could offer some assistance or additional equipment. Questions and conversation like that is hardly found today in the larger scale chain hardware shops where most associates try not to get asked questions. I fucking hate it when a store associate tries to avoid your eye contact, so as, not to be bothered. Not the case here, most store associates will try and answer or point you to someone more knowledgeable. Clark-Devon is right on the corner of this intersection and a has an interesting entrance into the parking lot, careful not to cause an accident. Decent amount of parking which never gets too crowded even on the busiest of weekends. read more

Ugh- It really hurts me to give Clark-Devon Hardware only 3 stars, but I have to. If this review reflected only their customer service, it would be 5. I'll spare you all of the gory details, but the nitty gritty is that I couldn't get my old license plate off. After a number of attemps, some rust-remover/softener spray on the bolts, and instructions to "come back on Monday", that's just what I did. FF then to yesterday. Knowing that they closed at 6- (SIX PM ON WEEKDAYS!!!!!) I left work in the loop early to make it in time. I didn't even stop at home, went straight to the car, and made it by 5:35. I found the guy that tried to help me the 2 days before, (Me: "Hi! You said come back on Monday and here I am!" Him: "not at 5:30!" (groan) At check out some 20 min later, right as I am enthusiastically being told to leave, I mention casually to the cashier that it would be a LOT more convenient for those of us DIY neighboorhood folk with 9-5 jobs if the store stayed open even one more hour, until 7. Then, a gruff owner-looking individual peeks his head out from a loft-like "office" above and rudely informs me that they've been open since 7:30 THIS MORNING! (Wow! 7:30??? In the AM?? Well excuuuuuuuuuuuse me!) Who do these people think their customers are? Listen, Clark-Devon Hardware. Not ALL of your customers are contractors who buy their goods in the middle of the day. Most of us have jobs, and can't make it to your store by 6. You know where I'll go next time? Home Depot. Yep. They open at 6am and close at 9pm on weekdays. Thank you for loaning me your Phillips head. Thank you for your really nice employees. I may be back if I need something and I get lucky enough that you're open at the time, But I can tell you now that Home Depot will likely be my go-to. read more

This is probably the best hardware store in the Chicago area bar none definitely a hidden gem in the city. They have everything that other hardware stores have and more. We have an 100 year old house and every time something breaks and it often does they seems to have the most obscure parts that stores like Home Depot and Lowe's don't have like skeleton keys! I'd like to add that the workers there are very friendly and helpful and most have been there for years. They bend over backwards to try to help with your problem. Make sure you park in their lot, if you park on the side of the store and don't pay the meter you may get ticketed. The only quip I have is that I wish they had longer store hours ... things always seem to break in the evening when they are not open. read more

Maybe it's the training. Maybe it's the passion. Maybe it's the stamp on my forehead that says "I haven't a clue what I'm doing." Then again, a girl can always hope it's the fact that she's walking around a hardware store in a cute dress. Regardless of the reason, I was asked 4 times in my 10 minute visit to Clark-Devon Hardware I needed any help. Boy did I. I'll spare you the face palmingly silly details but suffice it to say that the people there know their stuff, and are happy to help you know it too. Clark & Devon hardware is essential if you need anything for a house of a older vintage. Because it is so far away I usually try other places first, but ultimately end up here for what ever I'm looking for. They have had plumbing fittings that the box stores don't have & parts for old double hung sashes. Once when the guy in plumbing, who always gives me that "I've seen you before but I am unsure" look asked me if I had any questions, I touted: "Do you remember if I have enough wood glue left on my bench for this project?" He said that he wasn't sure if I did or not but that as long as I kept is sealed anymore that I bought wouldn't go bad. Great answer to a smart assed question! Go here. Support these folks. Clark-Devon Hardware seems to have... EVERYTHING. I used to go to Lowes to get supplies for my small household projects... But I'd inevitably have to go back a second or third time... Not with Clark-Devon Hardware however! Everyone there is unbelievably helpful and friendly and they seem to have everything from the smallest washers and gaskets, to major appliances. This place has everything under the sun, super convenient because it's on my way to work. And the people that work here are actually competent and know what they're doing. I work in an real estate office, and as one of the only males there under the age of 50, the task of fixing small things generally falls to me. So in a fit of insanity, I volunteered to head up the renovation of my condo building common areas. I have spent more hours than I want to admit searching for many of the items. I submitted a quote request on mailboxes online and Clark-Devon was one of only two people that responded, and they came in better than just about any online retailer. This made me happy, because I would rather support a local business. Ken was very patient with my emails and questions on the mailboxes as well as some other items, and everyone else I have dealt with in the store when I have gone in in person has also been helpful and friendly. I should first say that I am a complete dummy in the home improvement department. Let me also admit that places like Lowes and Home Depot overwhelm me. Ok then........ I've been to Clark-Devon Hardware several times and have been pleased with the service and selection. I've not gone in to buy a ton of building supplies, but I have gotten misc. items, keys cut, wood cut, etc. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable and they don't make you feel stupid for asking for something that you have no idea about. A few months ago I had to have a shelf cut apart. I took it to Lowe's and they wouldn't do it b/c it didn't meet the size requirement. Clark-Devon did it in less than 5 minutes for only a couple of bucks. Last summer my boyfriend wanted to hang a flat screen TV and didn't know how to do it on an "exterior wall". Clark-Devon walked him through the process and told him exactly what supplies to get to make sure the TV was securely anchored. He was impressed with the help. Anyway, It's not a huge store but they seem to cram a lot into a little space. I highly recommend for your home improvement needs. read more

I've shopped here before and the staff are accessible, knowledgeable, and helpful. Most recently, I called looking for an irregular lightbulb. The guy spent a while on the phone with me, helping me compare specs with what they had versus what I needed. Over the last few years I've been working with my parents to rehab the condo I bought in Andersonville. During this time, I would on occasion hear my dad say "I've got to run up to Clark-Devon, be back soon." or "I ordered it from Clark-Devon, your mom is picking it up after work today." Little did I know what a magical place this Clark-Devon was! I took my first trip there just last week to have some glass cut for a couple of pictures I was framing. (Yes! They do that!) The moment I walked in a very nice & nice looking guy asked me if I needed help and not in the way that sounds sexist or condescending! I didn't wander the store as much as I would have liked, still dealing with a bum leg and all - but I'm dreaming of the day when I can go back in order to have some very nice, hot guys help me with all my hardware needs. This is a pretty great store, especially if you're looking for a specialty product that is hard to find. We were looking for some parts for broken windows that we couldn't find elsewhere, and they had them at Clark-Devon Hardware. We also had a cracked window that needed to be repaired. Staff showed my husband how to fix it, which saved us a couple bucks. They also do window repairs there too. It's also a good place to take old locks that need to be re-keyed. This is a pretty happening place, especially if you go during the week when it seems like all the independent contractors and handymen like to hang out. There is a parking lot in back, and I've always been able to find a spot there. Overall, I've had really good experiences every time I've gone to Clark-Devon Hardware. Staff is friendly and helpful, the store is organized and they have a great variety of specialty parts. read more

This place is great! The staff is REALLY helpful and they know their stuff. And if you're looking for it, they definitely have it! They even have classes to teach you how to take care of a few simple things at home (like how to install a ceiling fan!) I recently went to another hardware store down clark street and they were not as keen to help me. Then I told them, "that's ok, I'll just head down to Clark Devon Hardware, they have everything there" THAT is when the woman behind the counter wanted to help me. It's ok, lesson learned, Clark Devon Hardware first and always! My only complaint is that the aisle are small (really small) and the shopping carts are large (very wide) and when it's busy in there it can be a bit tough to navigate through the aisles. read more

Two reasons why this is the best hardware store to go to: 1) it has everything 2) Workers really go out of their way to help you, despite it being quite busy inside. Case in point- I ask where I can find caulking, guy takes me to aisle, asks what job I am doing precisely, and recommends which products I could buy depending on my job. Then I ask where I can find pest control. Guy asks me what pests I have, different strategies, and then recommends products based upon my comments and concerns. This place bailed me out of a huge jam recently. My usual go-to plumbing supply place, The Faucet Shoppe, was closed for two weeks over the holidays, and I was up the creek with two cracked shower stems (that apparently happens when a tenant leaves his door open when it's 30 below zero), that were unlabled and apparently uncommon. After driving all over the city in blinding snow and frigid cold, in my own personal planes-trains-and-automobiles style odyssey, and getting blank stares from so-called professionals at other so-called plumbing supply stores, these folks were able to recognize and give me the right part. In general, shopping here warms the Special Area of my anti-big-box soul. It's like a slightly scaled down Home Depot, but with a genuine small business vibe. They have pretty much everything you want, in a warmer more welcoming atmosphere. For some reason the main thing that struck me about this place was the low (compared to Home Depot) ceilings. It was nice shopping in a hardware super store without the imminent threat of an improperly shelved pallet of toilets falling on top of me and thereby bringing my meager existence to a merciful, ignominous yet somehow fitting end. There are a couple reasons why I can't give this place the full five stars, though. First, when I bought the stems ($70) I made it very clear to the guy at the plumbing desk I was not a plumber and was unfamiliar with ceramic disk cartridges specifically, and asked if there was anything I needed to know to install it without ballsing the whole thing up. He said no and it was as easy as could be. When I got back to the building I noticed the stems were both in several pieces inside the bag (I don't know if they gave them to me that way or that happened in transit, but I wasn't particularly rough with them). I put them back together and installed them, but I had cracked the disks either putting them together or installing them and so had to go back the next day and do the whole thing over again. When I explained what happened, the guys at the desk first made fun of me then explained that ceramic disk cartridges are very expensive and very delicate and I needed to take care to keep them in one piece and not overtighten them otherwise they would break. I was like, "Okay, but didn't I kind of ask this question one day and $70 ago?" All in all, I can't blame them for my incompetence but I still feel like the guy could have been a little more helpful up front. Lastly, it took me like twenty minutes to check out, which was kind of annoying. They only had two lanes open and as soon as I got to the front of the one lane the older lady at the register closed it to take a quick break. I can't be too hard on her--she was about 700 years old, had obviously been on her feet drinking coffee all day, and probably just had to make a quick BMW. But couldn't they have one of the other 50 people working there cover the register if they're only going to have two lanes for the whole store? I switched over to the back of the only remaining line, and by the time I got to the register the girl at the counter continued to chat with the guy in front of me (a contractor, obviously a regular) for a while as though there was no one behind him, which probably wouldn't have irked me otherwise but given all the above was irritating. The day was thoroughly saved though by the fact that they have Tootsie Roll Pops at the register. These are probably my favorite candy ever despite the fact they make me think of the old creepy commercial where the owl who is really a pedophile gets off on licking kids' Tootsie Pops. I bought like twenty and nom-nomed them on the way home, put in the second set of $70 stems and forgot about all the above. So I guess I'm saying I liked the place. The man in the plumbing area fixed me up with a custom made item that fit my needs exactly and made suggestions for materials I had never considered. Clark-Devon is a contractors dream as well as a homeowners assistant! They are friendly, helpful, and do not treat you like an idiot. As a new homeowner, owning a place that had fixtures and plumbing from the late 60's, I found myself in need of parts that were not carried at the big box stores. My brother- who helped fix things, would send me here. The employees never laughed at me- which is pretty amazing considering the fact that half of the time I was trying to read my brothers handwriting and explain what was broken. I am convinced that they saved me big $$. I still go here when I need things, and I still sound like an idiot. We have now had this relationship for over 10 years. I'm a hardware store weirdo. Ever since I was a kid, I love, love, love hanging out in hardware stores. For me, there are four things that make a GREAT hardware store: 1) Knowledgeable staff who know how to use everything they sell and can help you SOLVE A PROBLEM, not just point you towards an aisle. 2) Staff that is polite and respectful, not condescending, to women. Yeah, I'm a girl. But I own a Sawzall and I know how to use it. 3) Quality inventory which includes the funky, rare elements needed to fix ALL HOUSES, including old houses with steam heat and wood windows. Not just generic McMansion supplies. 4) Reasonable prices. Clark & Devon gets high marks on all of these requirements. Unlike Home Depot (where floor staff have a- told me I was crazy for restoring versus replacing my wood windows, b- didn't know what backer rod was, c- didn't sell steam radiator shut off valves, d-can't make a new key correctly to save their lives), C & D has the stuff AND knows their stuff. I've walked in here once and it was to have keys made. I loved it, mostly because I was so thoroughly intimidated by how "manly hardware" it looked. I was thrilled that it didn't have any of the friendliness of Lowe's or Home Depot. It's a store who knows who it is: It's a Hardware Store. Obviously, my job almost didn't qualify as a real one but for the 10 minutes I was there I felt like if I had a more complex problem, I could ask and the wouldn't treat me like an idiot (well, they might, but I AM actually a hardware idiot so I'd give them points for recognizing that and being actual authorities on hardware.) For a long time I've searched for reasons to go back and, despite heartfelt attempts, haven't destroyed anything enough to the point of warranting another trip...but I'm still hoping. This also may be excessively "girlie" for such a "Manly Hardware Store" but I love the clock on the outside of the building (as part of their sign.) It tells you everything you need to know about this place. They're not messin' around in there. Ace may be the place for the helpful hardware man but I'm still gonna go to CDH. read more

Had the best experience with Cindy there today! I went in with a small bathroom repair for my toilet paper holder and she was kind, patient and very thorough in her explanation of what I am to do - especially after I told her how much my handyman wanted to charge for the job, which was so expensive considering the work. She spent a good 15 minutes with me, explaining to me how to do it, wrote the drill dimension on the bag, explaining two different methods and cheering me on with a "you can do this!" attitude. Wide-ranging inventory, large knowledgeable staff, reasonable prices, parking, etc., etc. What more is there? We wanted to change our locks on bathroom and bedroom door, but we were trying to find the specific type. This was not easy as the lock was builder grade and you could not find it at HomeDepot, any other big store or online. Friend recommended this place. We took the whole lock there and employee knew exactly what it was. It was that easy. Saved us a lot of time and money, as we did not have to replace the doors. Ken at Clark-Devon Hardware is incredibly helpful, patient, and efficient. Last month I placed an order and paid online with Home Depot; I later found out that the product was in fact not being ordered, and that they didn't know how to help me get the supplies that I needed... I'm SO GLAD that Home Depot left me stranded and in need of supplies, because that's how I found Clark-Devon Hardware. I use PE tubing to build hula hoops and have had trouble finding a location that delivers to my door, receives shipments weekly, and takes the time to understand my needs. I've dealt with a handful of confused and borderline rude store employees, so I truly appreciate Ken at Clark-Devon Hardware for taking the time to talk to me. The products they recommend always work great. We had a handyman in our apartment who saw one of the products that was recommended to me by one of the staff, and commented on how awesome it is and how usually only professionals know about it. The best hardware store ever. They stock an unbelievable range of hard-to-find items. Every time I need a part for a discontinued faucet, an old intercom, a special door lock, or some other obscure item that nobody else has heard about, Clark-Devon has it, often for half the Ebay price. Yelp says that a 3 star rating is "A-OK." That's kind of the epitome of my review. I needed to rent a grill for an event I was organizing. My boyfriend took ownership of calling around and getting a grill, and C-DH was able to offer us a good price, and delivery on Saturday. Huzzah. One bummer: They weren't available on Sunday, and so we'd have to drop it back off on Monday. They delivered it on time, set it up, and all was well. There was a moment of fright when we tried to disassemble it and get it into the car, but we quickly figured it out. Today, Boyfriend went to return the grill....and then we ran into a problem. Evidently, "We're not available on Sunday" doesn't mean, "You can drop it off on Monday." It means, "We're going to charge you for Sunday, even though we're not available." Maybe they were just not available to pick it up Sunday? Not sure. Either way, they didn't specify, and we were stuck with an extra $50 charge. So yeah, make sure that if you're renting something from them, you clarify those details, since they're not going to volunteer them. I'd probably rent from them again, although I'd make darn sure they were very clear about when they were expecting the item's return. read more

How fortunate I am to have this store in my new neighborhood! I could tell from the size of it that they would have everything I could need. Setting up a new apt is always a PITA, but with this store, it was a piece of cake. From a toilet paper holder and shower rod to heavy duty extension cords, this store has it all! And you don't have to go searching for help. Help is all around! Every staff member is friendly and knowledgeable. They know what good, old fashioned customer service is - and that it means you will be a repeat customer and tell everyone to shop there! I wasn't sure if something I bought would work out, and without even asking - the rep said "Try it out, if it doesn't work, bring it back!" I wound up having to bring something else back, which was cheerfully refunded. A store like this in the neighborhood is a Godsend and far better than any chain store could ever be. read more

Professional review I was a contractor for years and I remodeled my home . I've been to a hundred hardware stores in the Midwest and this is by far the best. They actually have an expert in each section of the store and most have been there for years because they pay a decent wage. And if they don't know there's always a tradesman standing there who does.
