Absolutely terrible curbside pick up experience with the older white gentleman who was annoyed from the beginning because I didn't know where exactly to go in the alley. He let me know that the local businesses have went out of business and he's the only one left because how customers treat them (referring to me). Although I am a Home Depot customer, it's great to have a fully stocked, full service hardware store in the neighborhood. I have used them for storm window and screen repairs, too. Lakeview Ace has been open since I've lived in the neighborhood (34 years), and recently they tore down their old building and built a new building with apartments above the hardware store. I walked in and was greeted by a young man who was very helpful. A minute or so later an older white man asked if I needed help, I said no, because I had just gotten help, yet he proceeded to watch me shop. So I walked to another aisle to see if he would follow me and he did. Then I walked back to the aisle that had what I was looking for and he followed me back and pretended to start working on something. I don't like to be followed or watched while shopping. I will be returning to this store every time I need something they stock! I went in yesterday, looking for some help with hanging some patio lights. The salesperson walked me through two options: one was the most likely to work and cost around $80 (equipment); the other about $4 and a big but hopeful "maybe." I got home, and the $4 option worked perfectly! I took all the other equipment back and was given a full refund with zero hassle. It was so wonderful to not feel like I was being taken advantage of or upsold, as I so often feel when out of my element with around-the-house stuff. Each and every time the greet you as you walk in, they ask if you need any help, they either point or walk you to where you need to go. Wow, the owner is so unprofessional. I bought two sets of string lights for my patio for $17 each. The second I got home I opened one up. I could tell they wouldn't be long enough. I didn't even plug it in. I put it back in the box but they were so intricately woven into this cardboard, There was no way possible I could've gotten it back like from the factory which was what he was expecting. so , at home, I threw the internal cardboard away and put the lights back in the original box because I couldn't get it all to fit... I tried to return them with my receipt. He was so rude!! and said he wouldn't take it back because not every piece of the original packaging was intact/ so jokingly I said well do you want me to go in my dumpster and get it out of the trash bag and he legitimately said yes, he and he was dead ass serious. He wanted me to dive in my dumpster to go find the cardboard for this, so I could return it. He Got super close to me when he was talking and talk to me like I was dumb and was degrading. He has no idea I could buy his store in 2 seconds. I was being very respectful. As a big guy .. he told me that I was trying to bully him when I was just calling him out saying this is bullshit that he wouldn't take it back because of missing piece of cardboard. I can't return this cause I don't have the cardboard that was inside the box and all he kept going on about was "how was he ever going to resell this 16.99 item" . I called another Ace around the corner that so happens to be their sister store (so I'm assuming he owns both as a franchise and I hope so because I still got my refund behind his back) and they took it back no problem no questions asked!!! it took two seconds. He lost a customer who spends a lot of money there over 16.99. What an idiot. and they returned. It gave me my cash and I left two minutes. He was just being a dick. I will never go back to that store. I live on the corner. I spent a lot of money there, but he's an asshole and I will never step foot in there ever again. I have been coming to this store for 25 years. It's the best hardware store with very helpful personnel. Store was closed while building was demolished and new building built with apartments above. Still same caring staff. This location is better than Big Box stores for vintage building hardware, fixtures, and expertise. Also they carry Benjamin Moore paint, make keys and will sell screws individually instead of big boxes. Save yourself the hassle and come here first. read more

You can definitely tell that men are in charge here! Take a glance from outside through the windows and all you can see is mass disorganization. The store has two times what it can hold. Yet, these aren't all bad things when the employees are familiar with the style of how the store functions. They get whatever you need done and in a quick fashion. I was searching for a place near work that copies keys. I saw the large key cut-out on the door, walked in, and told them what I needed; "Two copies of this key, please." Boom Batta Bang! I love this place! While they are not as large as stores in the suburbs, they always have the things I need. Screws for your license plate, not at Target, but several different options here. Curtain rods, check. Keys made immediately w/o searching all over the store for the 'key person'? Check. I don't know why there are low reviews on Yelp. Every time I come here, someone greets me as I walk in the door and they always ask if they can help me find anything. When I've accepted their help, they walk me directly to the isle and show me on the shelf where the item is. If they are always nice and helpful to a transgender chick, I can't imagine them treating anyone any different. I always go here first! Support your local stores! read more

Can be a bit overwhelming trying to find something on your own, but all of the staff know the store like the back of their hands and are more than happy to help you find what you need! Employees are also very knowledgeable and can help you find the solution to your home repair problem (big plus if you're a clueless first-time homeowner like me!). Last time I went I needed to replace a closet track. They had what I needed, but the employee said it would need to be cut with a handsaw to fit my closet. He must've seen the look of fear on my face, as I don't own and have never used a handsaw, and he went in the back and cut it to the size I needed for free. I went in here as my usual cheery customer self. I needed Liquid Fence or Deer Off (rabbits it's on!) I walked up to a young woman, said hello and she gave me the oddest RBF. I paused and after an awkward silence she ask: Do you need help? I told her what I needed and she had no clue what I was talking about. Thankfully there was a young man there with her who knew of the products I was looking for. This store did have either product in liquid form, but after RBF I knew I would end up at Home Depot. Rudeness is uncalled for when a customer simply says hello, and the worker stares at him as if his presence disturbed her. My window slider broke a few years ago and with the deep freeze this past week, I needed to finally take action. The guys here were all really great at knowing what I needed-- I dropped off another window slider so they could fabricate a new frame and window from scratch. They completed this within about two hours and called me to let me know it was ready for pickup.. and the cost was extremely affordable. Here's a little stroll down memory lane for you: I decided I wanted to paint my walls when I first moved in...back in '06. So, since I suck at anything relating to home improvement, I had to seek the services of the employees at this Lakeview Ace. Why go to one of those HUGE chains if you can get friendly, personalized service from a neighborhood shop? Right. So, I give the manager, Adam, the little paint chips of the colors I want. He whips them up while Kristina B. and I wander aimlessly through the store. (It's kinda entertaining to see the random ish that's in a hardware store.) When Adam's done with the paint, he asks if I need any paint supplies. Clearly, I stare at him blankly 'cuz what other supplies do you need besides paint and a brush? He shakes his head (in a playful manner) and basically leads me towards everything I'd ever need - tarp, those paint container thingies, tape, different size brushes, etc. Adam was a godsend. Without his guidance, my hardwood floors would be jacked up and so would the corners of my walls. Can you get that kind of service at Home Depot?! Didn't think so! read more

Blizzard + old apartment building with old plumbing = a backed up toilet and me running to Ace Hardware in the middle of a blizzard for a plunger. Thank God (and I mean THANK GOD!) that Lakeview Ace Hardware was open yesterday. I braved the second wave of the Blizzard of '11 to save my apartment from an overflowing toilet. Not only where they open, but they were opened ON TIME and already had half of their sidewalk shoveled by the time I got there. The two teenage girls that were working inside were friendly and sweet and helped my find that much needed plunger. Not only did they have a nice plunger selection (and a fancy one with a lucite handle...I never knew plungers could be cute), but I took a minute to browse around and this store has almost anything you might need to fix, decorate, clean, and organize your home. I've decided that I need the lighting fixture pull-chan with a baseball on the end of it for my closet. NEED! read more

I've been coming to this place since 2003 and have had nothing but good experiences. They supplied almost everything for my kitchen and bathroom remodel in addition to many little projects in between as well as house paint and Christmas trees. I came here with a friend to buy paint + supplies (we were painting her condo) and we found everything we needed. They even helped us carry everything out to the car! How nice! This place gets 5 stars instead of just 4 because there's this hottie who works there named Adam. Not only is he hot, but he's smart, informative, helpful...AND funny! But ladies...don't touch. First off, I want to say that I typically support smaller businesses in the neighborhood rather than going to a big box retailer for something I need. I've bought items from this location in the past. This past weekend I recently bought a dimmer for my new light fixture and some dimmable bulbs, with the help of one of the managers (I assume). The truth is, this store is great for when you need something. But when you need to RETURN something, it's the greatest grief you have ever received from the store. Someone has already reviewed a similar situation with their return, so I'm not making this up. After purchasing the dimmer and lightbulbs, I hired an electrician to do the install for me the same day. He installed the dimmer --- which DID NOT work. My electrician called the manufacturer and customer support said that it was a defective item and to return back to the store. So I ran back to Ace (within two hours of purchasing)... the same manager who sold me the dimmer and bulbs, gave me stank eye about the dimmer. Staring at it for five minutes as if my fairy godmother was going to magically appear with her wand and say, "Bippity Boppity Work!". I explained to him TWICE that it didn't work, and that I'd like to get it replaced. He questioned who I hired (yes, by electrician I really meant the homeless guy I ran into in the alley that I paid $5 to hook up a light and dimmer for me; #eyeroll). He questioned who told him it was defective. Asked about the bulbs (the same ones he sold me). Then he says he's never had a problem like this and begrudgingly gave me a replacement. When I got home, the new dimmer worked. And after such a sour experience trying to return something, I'd rather take my business to another Ace, or a corporate retailer who won't be such a jerk about returning things. read more

I have to give the Lakeview Ace Hardware 5 stars for great service. The moment I walked in the woman working the cash register asked what I was looking for. Not only did she promptly and knowledgeably direct me to the appropriate section, she also knew off-hand that what I needed would be on the top shelf (and out of my 5'2" reach) and offered to send someone over to help me get what I needed. I turns out it was not in stock but she offered to order it to pick up the next day if I was interested. A long time ago when I first moved into Lakeview I noticed that there was no place to put a roll of toilet paper in my dime-sized bathroom. I never thought I'd get into that situation and that those holders just naturally come with apartments! Oh well, silly me. Finding one of those doohickeys was hard! I think I went to two big-box stores before I actually found what I was looking for here. It's nice to have a place like this in Lakeview when you're not sure where to turn for specific home items like this. It's a little cramped but they have a decent selection of "stuff" including paint, which is why I was there. After explaining my purpose for the paint, a worker helped me select the right kind. I needed one of those screwy things that screw things in the wall and didn't want to spend a lot. My dad bought me one a long time ago but I misplaced it so now I was off to find another. I didn't want to go to Home Depot because that just seemed way to intimidating so in to Ace I walked. I started looking around by myself but it was clear I wasn't going to find that screwy thing. So I walked back up to the front and asked the man at the counter. I told him specifically, "I need to screw some screws into my wall and need one of those screwy hanging things." This Ace IS the place! It is your good ol' ma & pa hardware store. The place is small but packed tightly with anything & everything for your latest endeavor (paint, tools, shelving etc). Sure, it is dusty and somewhat low lit but that justs adds to the appeal in my book. Unlike the staff at some other large places that 'claim' to be hardware stores...the guys here are truly knowledgeable about every product they carry. They have been through every home project with me and couldn't have been more patient and helpful. Did I mention that some of the guys on staff are also pretty hot? Now that everything in my place is done I am going to have to break something to give me a reason to go in there. read more

One time, I bought the wrong lightbulbs and returned them an hour later with no hassle. Customer is king, right? Especially today when you have so many options and most stores offer free online delivery, don't argue with your customer about the quality of your goods. I would never say anything if it happened once. Me--"I just bought this here and it broke in 2 places as I was trying to install it for my mother. I don't have a receipt, can I get a store credit please". The owner--"I've been selling this for years, there is nothing wrong with it." (Exactly the argument I got a year ago when I tried to return something, so I was waiting for it.). He says--"Give me the card it was purchased with and give you a refund". Me--"My mother bought it with her card and she lives in the burbs. Can I get a store credit?". "Nope, sorry". It's loyalty dude! I'll spend the money here. IT'S WHAT ALL THE OTHER HARDWARE STORES DO! I brought my mom back and spoke to another guy who also argued about the quality. I have other options... Not once in my life have I had a merchant argue with me about the quality and give me a hard time about store credit. read more

I bought a pair of work gloves here which literally fell apart the same day I purchased them. Brought them back the next day and caught all kinds of attitude from the owner because he just didn't understand how this could be possible despite many other folks also experiencing the same problem.. he had several other pairs of the gloves there that were returned with the same issue. Incredibly rude and insulting. Sorry pal, don't sell garbage quality products and they won't dissipate the moment they walk out the door. We had a terrible experience when going in to ask about a paint project we were doing. We had done a fair amount of research on what we needed to do to repaint a wall in our house so we went to the store to get a product (all purpose joint compound). When we asked the store clerk a question about what we needed he was very rude and replied, "oh well that's a professional project." He then proceeded to ask us a bunch of question to show how much more he new then us on the products instead of helping us find what we needed. We simply said, "ok, we'll go somewhere else to find someone who will actually help us get what we need." So we did and it was a night and day difference. We got an all purpose joint compound which was a very common product for "do-it-yourself" home paint jobs and went on with our project with no issues. They're very nice and helpful, from locating an item, to describing what I need and them helping me find a solution. Also, as a new home owner,I can now appreciate the joy of walking into a hardware store and *not* getting the condescending attitude you sometimes get as a woman.
