We visited @forestparkil today to drop off our taxes. @oakparkil is right next door so this was a belated visit to a place we lived for 22 years. @schaurhardware is a local #hardwarestore and a local #institution. Bought many things here over the years. We walked in and was immediately recognized by "thebiglebowski." Still the same and the hardware store is the same with a plethora of bolts, nails, building materials, collapsable buckets, and of course a very nice candy counter! I recently purchased some chairs from someone online, for extra holiday seating. I discovered that a couple were missing the speciality screws that held them together. I tried to find the screws online, with no luck. I took one of the chairs to Schauer's Hardware and the gentleman helping me found the perfect replacement screws. I got extra, just to be safe. The customer service and knowledge of product is such a valuable asset, and this cannot be replaced or found in online shopping. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE . I purchase a 400) snowblower literally 2 weeks ago. The Briggs and Stratton 618. Parts have been fallen off of it and today a rubber boot and front scraper blade broke off. I called the store and spoke to the lander who later when I asked for his name identifies his name as Robert. Told me to call back and talk to Rich TOMORROW. In addition told me to find a local place to fix it or call the company. This thing is literally 2 weeks old and I have only used it for sidewalk and driveway. I am left with a $400 piece of kick and NO HELP aFrom this store or management. I will never purchase anything from this store again . No policy on repair or service was ever día issues during purchase It is this kind of lack customer service that keep drawing people to big box store and always from supporting the family own business who at one time took care of their loyal customers. What a shame and this has left me very angry. OH and More Important. ....They built it at the store. It was already put together. Obviously someone did not so a good job. The service here is EXCELLENT!! I called 2 garden centers and stopped by 3 other places in search of play sand for a kids sandbox today. Two places I called just transferred me to their garden department extensions- they rang forever- no one answered. A third place was out of sand for the season. And the other 2 didn't seem to ever carry sand. The nice lady at Schauer's picked up, went outside to check on their supply and told me to come in. The price was right and they even offered to load the bags into my car. I'm going back tomorrow for more sand and Schauer's will be our new family hardware store! It seems like they have a great selection, it's super tidy and most important the staff are helpful and friendly!!!! Thank you Schauer's!! read more

I am far from Bob the builder but I enjoy coming to this store. I would rather stop in this great place for hardware needs before going to a big box retailer. Every staff member I have encountered has been knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. My most recent visit was for a specific item but I left with items I needed but never knew existed. I can also fully appreciate the various novelty and old school favorites near the front of the store. I know nothing about Bubble up, but if that was your drink back in the day, it's here too. I find big box hardware stores to be overwhelming. Difficult to find what I need -- including a staff member to help me. This hardware store has almost everything I need from a hardware store - especially staff to help. Easy to get in and out. Haven't been disappointed yet. Plus they have things like Oak Park lawn and garbage waste stickers. Fair prices, too. Customer service story: For example, one employee spent around 10 minutes with me just to find an uncommon screw to fix an old scissors. The screw was 30¢. Giving a customer that much time is common here. You won't find some things that the big boxes are known for, like Lighting, large garden center, lumber, interiors, appliances. But all the basics and then some are here. The downsides: street parking, limited hours, unmarked aisles, and sometimes cluttered shelves, but staff are available to help navigate. Still five stars from me. read more

So glad this little hardware store is in my neighborhood. I always stop here first before going to a big box home improvement store. Generally, they have what I need at a good price. Great place to exchange your propane tank as well. Was driving all over town a few weeks ago trying to find a place to do that after the Uhaul store told me that the "guy that does that will be back in 30 minutes" and Thornton's "couldn't find the key to the propane rack." The best part, they're dog friendly. We often pop in with the dogs and they're treated like royalty. Even if I don't bring my own, I can't count on meeting someone else's pup while I'm in there. Great selection, friendly staff, and I can be in and out in the time it would take me to walk through the parking lot of a big box store. read more

There was no product that fit my needs, but the guy who works there took two products, connected them together for me (requiring the vice grip and a wrench), and sent me out the door with perfect solution and a few words of wisdom. This place is really great and the staff have always gone above and beyond to assist me. I mainly come her to get keys made which they can do in just minutes and for a very small fee. I also came her to get a custom piece of wood cut to fill a hole in my floor. Neither Home Depot or Menards were able or willing to help me but the guys at Schauers did!!! Really cannot say enough great things about this place; they have all the items you would expect a hardware store to have as well as ample parking in the back. I've been coming to this store for years back when it was a Peaslee's Ace Hardware. Many of the staff have been here for years and have always been helpful and friendly. The store is also clean and well organized too. Since my dad is about as handy as Tim "the toolman" Taylor I get wrangled into doing a lot of fix-it projects for my parents. I like this place because they put the customer first. Being a woman in a hardware store you can sometimes feel like you're not taken seriously, clueless or get talked into buying the most expensive option, but I've never felt that way here. If they don't carry something they're the first to suggest a place you can find it. read more

Old school hardware store known for years as Peaslee's. Helpful staff and they have just about anything you'd need other than the massive pieces of "do-it-yourself" stuff found in big box stores. But much more personal here. I give this place the nod over Dressel's, a similar store that is in Oak Park for two reasons. First, it's bigger - they have more stuff. Secondly (and this isn't the establishment's fault), parking in Forest Park is much more accommodating than it is in Oak Park. No metered nonsense in FP. read more

I love this neighborhood hardware store. It's so easy to stop in while out walking my dog, unless I'm buying something heavy. The owner is a wealth of information. I do miss some of the employees who have retired since I started coming here 20+ years ago. But the newer staff is committed to helping you. This is the old fashioned kind of place where an employee will walk you over to the item you're seeking, not just point. Everyone has always gone above and beyond no matter how small my purchases might be. The prices are comparable to big box store. Every once in a while I find myself taking on a handyman project way above my level, meaning anything involving tools, and thank goodness I only live a block from Peaslee's. (I guess it's technically Schauer's now.) On one occasion, I naively tried to move a closet thingy I had bought at Ikea. (Ikea does not make the highest quality items and they don't move well.) I broke some rod that holds the whole contraption together, and it turns out it was a metric rod. Home Depot didn't carry it, but I bumped into a local handyman there and he said to go to Peaslee's (which I should've done all along). They were temporarily out, but a super nice employee somehow wittled the broken rod and made it so it would work. Free of charge. They carry crazy obscure stuff and are super helpful Don't bother with the big box when there's a neighborhood gem like this around the corner. read more

I don't use tools. I never need tools. The only reason I come to the store is to get keys made. But every time I come I'm greeted by least 17 people who all want to help me. I make my way all the way to the back, get my keys made, and pay in 5 minutes. Everyone is very courteous. I love the store. if I was local I would maybe even take up gardening just to visit more often. read more

I love this store. It's so much better than Lowe's and Home Depot. The staff is extremely helpful and they have everything I need. Plus, it's five minutes from my house and there's good parking in the back. I had a slow drain in my tub and they helped me find the right product (which worked WONDERS - white bottle, red and black lettering), and gave me some pointers on plunging a tub. Not only that, if I call to see if they have a product in stock they don't mind looking and telling me the price. They never make me feel like I'm a bother. I would rather have diarrhea than ever go to a big box hardware store again, and I feel great about supporting a neighborhood store. P.S.: If they offer you popcorn, say yes. Its name was recently changed to Schauer's Hardware, tho' it still looks and feels like the Ace it once was. The inside is fairly clean and organized. Their employees are helpful and knowledgeable about other local businesses, and they've always been happy to point me to the right direction (without fail!) when they couldn't provide the service or didn't carry the products I was looking for. For example, they're the one who told me about Tayloe Glass (one of my first reviews!) when I needed my broken window repaired. Free parking at the back of the store. DIY Diva Paradise! Well at least that's what I like to call myself so it fits! I love this place. The staff is extremely help. Despite my self-proclaimed title, I do need a ton of help when I enter any hardware store. I love coming here because when you have questions they are there not only to answer but help you understand the answers to the other questions, the why and the how. They always have what I am looking for and the prices are great! I dont have to stroll aisle after aisle! Everything is perfectly organized in areas that actually make sense! This is a wonderful store. I only make occasional trips to hardware stores and am not very knowledgeable about home repair. Each time that I have been there, the staff have been incredibly friendly and helpful. They are also dog-friendly, and their prices are reasonable. Before finding Schauer's, I made several visits to another locally owned hardware store in the OP/FP area, and I found them unhelpful, unfriendly, and generally uninterested in my business. Schauer's is the complete opposite. This is a great place for the uneducated occasional screw-turner and paintbrush-waver like me. Everyone that works here is SO friendly! They have a bit if everything! I don't own a home, but have gotten keys made here and even attended a great "Ladie's Night Out" event about a month ago! I am going to recommend a product to my landlord that I saw at the event kind of like draino, but I think it is natural. The owner, Sandy, even supported a Framable photo notecard business that I have slowly been starting-up and bought some to sell at her shop!!!! She set them up so nicely! I went here for an appliance utility cord. You know the one for small kitchen appliances, ul listed one size standard utility cord. Eazy pezy right? First a clerk tells me "there over there" pointing. I go and nothing even close is there. But then. I get this speech from the guy whose suppose to be the guy. He says oh ee don't have those. You've got to go to an appliance store. There's a place ( somewhere far northside)... Adding, you know supply and demand. Ok here is what the take awsy is. I went to ACE Hardware. 2 minutes in eazy pezy I had my appliance utility cord. I said to the man who helped me I'd make this my store in future telling him my story. I just moved to the area and am working on a two-person work-from-home desk for our new home office. I greatly overestimated my woodworking abilities (which is half the fun) and bought some massive birch butcher block slabs without thinking through how I would square them up after cutting to size. Without the equipment or the skills, I decided I needed professional help and started calling around local hardware stores, lumber stores, big box stores. After 15 or so stores told me they wouldn't dare touch it, I realized how difficult the rip and cross cuts must be, and thought I was screwed - until someone recommended trying Schauer's. Richard explained exactly what the challenge would be, but was game to give it a shot. Not long after, I had all my cuts done and Richard even helped me load the incredibly heavy slabs back in the car, all at an outrageously cheap price. We hope to stay in the area for a long time, and Schauer's has earned my business permanently! read more

I like Schauer Hardware because it's small. It's a local hardware store that sells that packs a hardware punch. I'm usually able to find what I need on my own and also without getting lost in a maze of isles. The isles are well organized, labled, and tidy. There are pleanty of employees to lend a helping hand when needed. read more
