This is a great little hardware store for those of us who live in the city. Despite it's small size, it seems to have just about everything you need in a hardware store. The people are amazingly helpful and know exactly where everything is. I'll take this place over any Home Depot, any day of the week. You feel like the people actually know what they're talking about and are anxious to help you! Miss you guys now that I'm in Cleveland! read more

I go to this Ace Hardware from time-to-time but on my last visit I was helped by a knowledgeable, friendly person named "Chuck". He not only helped me determine exactly what I was looking for but we got into a conversation about Ace versus Home Depot because I always thought Ace was more, "locally" owned... And I was right. He explained the Ace Hardware structure versus Home Depot And that has now made me COMPLETELY an Ace customer. Chuck is da man!!! read more

Give the cashier employee who was working on Sunday March 13 morning shift a raise!!! Maybe make her president of the entire company. What innovation. Not only did she have a larger bag for the 14x24x1 filters we purchased, but also she thought to tie a normal size bag on the handles of the larger bag thus creating a useable handle for our walk home. ACE is the place with the helpful hardware folks indeed! 5 stars read more

I'm not the handiest gal in the world....I've called handymen in the past to hang a light bulb! But from time to time I find myself visiting this Ace Hardware...and I love it here! The service here is incredible...the people who work here are so helpful. They don't treat me like I'm stupid when I ask incredibly ignorant questions, unlike my electronic snobby friends who work over at Best Buy. Today I stopped in this Ace on a mission to find paint samples. The nice woman at the cash registered pointed me towards my favorite paint man, Benjamin Moore, where I found hundreds of paint colors to choose from! Oh, Benjamin...is it really necessary to make 73 different shades of red? You're just making my life more difficult! Luckily for me, Ace's paint expert, Jeremy, was there to led a hand. He had the samples I was looking for in my hand within moments and gave me all the info I needed to know about painting our new condo. Thanks to Jeremy and Ace I've got my paint colors all picked out...now, all I need is a painter! Any suggestions? read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. The older man at the cash register is so angry and rude. He yells and slams his hand down if you want to return an item. He uses slurs about groups of people, and ignores customers while he chats with coworkers. I've gone in this place maybe four times while doing some projects and every time something happens with him. Who is he and why is he there???? read more

The Purchase- I recently stopped in here..and purchased an Amaryllis Bulb Growing Kit for the holiday season. The Customer Service- I was immediately greeted upon entry by the team member at the cash register and the other staff members were also responsive to all customers in a caring manner. The Merchandise- From a key cutting center, to holiday decorations, grills, light bulbs, and all "hardware" type things that you would need to fix or repair a home...this place has it all! Location- It is a few blocks from the Grand CTA Station and in the basement under CVS Pharmacy and next to Petco. There is an escalator and an elevator which is convenient. read more

They have jumper cables. I needed jumper cables to jump my dead car battery and they had a reasonable selection for reasonable prices. I am very happy this location is still in Chicago and I am sure their business model changed with the neighborhood becoming high rises. More grills and other stuff for condo owners. read more

I can honestly say that this store has almost everything i've needed when it comes to repairing small things. They've had light bulbs for everything in my apartment and for my tail light on my car, some kitchen items such as twine and mason jars, and a friendly staff to help you find all of it. I will always stop in here before making an adventure out of finding something I may need. read more

The salesman was very helpful. I was able to find everything I needed quickly and be on my way. It was a well stocked store.

You gotta love a 'handy' hardware store .... Home Depot? a TREK ... There's no lumber here, but if you're looking for tools, pipe or a new cover for your ginormous Ironing board, they have it. They've also managed to cram a few pieces of furniture in along side the barbecues. for it's location, it's huge. You wouldn't think it's as large as it is from outside. negatives -- the minute you walk in the door who ever is at the register asks ... "can I help you?" ... uh ... I just got here! If I need you, I'll come find you kai-thx-bai! I realize I'm in the minority in this regard, so, it's a small annoyance especially given all the stuff they *do* have, and - it's proximity to my walk between my weekend job and the Red Line. read more

Apparently, the ownership of all 5 Gordon's Ace stores changed hands in March of this year, and the new owner hired a new security company. And a friend of mine, who had been a good customer of theirs for years, has already had a very bad experience at the Orleans Street store since those changes occurred. I wasn't there myself, so I can't comment on the details of what happened and how it happened, but I'll just say this: if you visit any of these Ace stores in the future, leave all your belongings in the car or at the front counter, or be sure you have receipts for everything in your possession that could have possibly come from Ace. My friend arrived on foot that day, so he *had* to bring his belongings into the store. He has all the evidence he needs on his side, so he'll come out on top, but not without a lot of time and inconvenience and expense. Me, I will probably never set foot into any of those stores again. I guess I'll be going to the big box stores (which are cheaper anyway). What a pity. Update, 6/5/2015: The judge did indeed dismiss the case on May 21, and the arresting officers apologized to my friend. But Ace hasn't, so far. read more

Amazing find for fans of the Twilight Zone! That is the best comparison I can draw. On one hand, so glad it's here in this location; so convenient. You can get paint mixed, keys made, etc... Great. On the other hand, your experience is bound to be just...weird! Just go see for yourself. read more

After visiting a "Big Box" hardware store I am inspired to write to my favorite neighborhood hardware store. Note to self: "There is no place like your local Mom & Pop hardware store, There is no place like your local Mom & Pop hardware store...." I am in no way knocking the employee's at Big Box stores, they have a hard job as well as having to toe the corporate manual line for little pay. I am just grateful for my local hardware store and their awesome staff. Where else can you stop & play with the kittens for adoption but at Gordon's Ace which is right next to Petco? Seriously... KITTENS!!! Every time I go there without my honey they are always super nice and never give me that "stupid chic" attitude when I ask a question. I always feel respected and the answers are thoughtfully given. No matter what we have been looking for from obscure screws to various solutions like the best paint to cover up a dark paint, to their opinions on various grills, cleaning products, etc. I even once had them offer to help me home with my giant purchase of rocks and dirt for a replanting project I was doing. I guess my giant bag filled as well as several heavy bags caused them a bit of concern as I had enough ballast to keep me grounded on the windiest of days. Bonus - They validate in the lot behind the store if you make a purchase. read more

I've become a bit handier over the past few years, and this store is my go-to solution for all things fix-it related. Nails, screws, air filters, drain cleaner, and super glue (a girl needs her super glue) Service is outstanding here. I've never walked in and NOT been greeted. It's great to walk in and tell them what you need, and they will walk you to the exact location. It makes the trips quick and painless. The store is surprisingly large as well, and has a great array of non-tool related things, such as household cleaners (Woo! Eliminates a trip to Target). And prices are competitive, if not cheaper for some things (their Ace store brand is a great value) I typically stop in on the walk home from work, but there is free parking if you need it (which is a hot commodity in this neighborhood) read more

I have gone to this Ace for many years and really like the service I have received. I'm really writing this review in support of the employees that have to work with the manager that was on duty April 19, 2012. She was so rude and condescending to the other employees. All the time I was their she continuously talked to them very rudely. Finally she waited on me. Nothing welcoming about her. Not even a "thank you". The central office needs to know that her ability to communicate and deal with employees and customers is not acceptable. I will continue to use this Ace but; will avoid this manager at all cost. Devil in D&G sunglasses; inside. Please read more

Ace Hardware makes me feel like a girl that can fix things. I can buy super glue and fix the darn lamp i broke and make an extra set of keys to give my friends to save me when I lock myself out (which by the way is often) and guess what else, we all need lightbulbs.. But what I like most about Ace is that you get that small town shop feel, a little of everything that you might need at your house... brooms, buckets, windshield fluid and not to mention Anti-Monkey Butt Powder. www.antimonkeybutt.com HomeDepot is great if you have a home, but Ace is for the urban dweller who just needs the essentials, tools, lightswitches, garbage bags, kitchen towels and someone helpful to say, sure you can, it's easy, just do 1. blah blah blah 2. then more blah blah blah and 3. voila! you're done! read more

This is a great hardware store, their selection is well suited for apartment dwellers. I've bought (among other things) leather cleaner, carpet foam, and Murphy oil (wood) soap from them, so you can count on a good selection if you're looking to keep your apartment clean and tidy. Their service is great. Every time I've walked in there, the cashier asks if they can help me find what I'm looking for, and directs me to the exact aisle and location of what I want! They're very nice there, and it's a convenient location for all the highrises around. It's also next to a Petco (right next door in the same little shopping center) so you can check out some animals on your way in and out! read more

Last time we moved, we swore off painting. We painted our last apartment in glorious colors, only to have to move only a year after we did it (it's a long story). "We'll paint when we actually buy a house. Someday." That obviously didn't stick. We rationalized painting the living room and the dining room because we had leftover paint from our previous place. We were then confronted with the issue of what would be my office. It was a hideous, pukey peach color and I hated it. I bit the bullet and went to Ace. I knew the color I wanted, but I didn't know how much paint I needed, or what finish I should get. I liked the paint dudes at Ace because they didn't try and upsell me on things I didn't need. They told me I would need at most 2 cans, but perhaps I could get away with 1. I bought 1 an and it covered the room perfectly. I'll definitely be back to this Ace for my home renovations....even if it is a rental. read more

Absolutely the best service at a hardware store!!! Always greeted by friendly staff. They are very helpful and patient. We moved into the neighborhood a few months ago and have been there 4-5 times. Helpful, knowledgable, friendly service with a smile at reasonable prices for the city. What more can you ask for?

Great hardware store in the neighborhood. They carry great variety of hardware and customer service has been great. The employees are knowledgeable and helped me find what I need quickly every time, unlike at Home Depot its hard to find someone to help. Highly recommend this store. read more

Still in love ...The helpful staff at this location continues to amaze me! They are always extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I was trying to remove some screws from a very old hinged window that had been painted over numerous times, the screwdriver was not doing the trick. I took a little trip to ACE with my window. Instead of trying to sell me some elaborate electric drill and all of it's accessories (drill bits etc) the manager took the window into the back and VOI-LA! The screws had been removed, the window in one hand and screws and hinges in the other. Another wonderfully successful trip to ACE. read more

I had a great experience here. Customer service was excellent at a time when it's hard to obtain. MICHELLE at the Benj. Moore paint area was exceptional in helping guide me through the overwhelming paint options. I had a general idea of what i wanted but she honed it in for me. Thank you again Michelle. I would've been willing to pay/hire someone for the consultation she gave me. After Michelle helped me, the cashier was super pleasant and had a smile. Again..hard to get these days. read more

Fantastic customer service at this store from everyone. Big shoutout to Mark working the cashier station for helping me pick out the perfect grill, explaining what I need for it and arranging a delivery and assembly for me. One of the store managers was very helpful and I didn't feel rushed or like I was inconveniencing them asking questions. The item was delivered right on schedule and was hassle free. Thanks Mark! read more

It can't get much better than Benjamin Moore paint and Weber grills...until they throw in free delivery (at least in my case) and outstanding customer service. The kind of service where I would go out of my way to go back to this store instead of a big box store that is much closer to where I live. I shopped around a lot for a Weber grill and not only is their price either competitive or better than both online and the big box stores, but they seem to have a better selection. The owner himself actually took the time to give me the run down on the grills, and knowing that I am a novice grill-er, he didn't even try to sell me more than the very basic model. Sign up for their Ace Rewards and get special coupons, discounts, etc, and, even better, they have a free parking lot. read more

First time here and from the moment we walked in Rick greeted us and was able to point us in the right direction and made sure a sales associate was in the aisle to meet us. I honestly can't see myself going to a big box store just for the prices. The advice I get every time I come to this store is invaluable. Last time I was here I was looking to get rid of some wasps that were free loading on my back porch. The guy I talked to kinda scared me that he knew sooo much about the wasp sprays & hole caulks. Turns out he had just gone to Ace Hardware training & learned about that stuff... whew! You can't get that in a big box... & that's if you can manage to track someone down. The other day I'm in there looking for what has to be the most obscure, random screw in the world. They had one. Ace is the place!!!!! read more

We are a local business that relies on the convenience of this location. On many occasions we have handled small emergency repairs with products conveniently available from this location. Most recently we were experiencing unusually cold days (early January) which resulted in a couple of drafty rooms. We purchased a couple of portable heaters hoping they would address the problem. I am sure they would have, had the breakers not tripped each time we plugged them in. We tried moving them about throughout the rooms hoping to keep the breakers from tripping. We were unsuccessful. It was very disappointing as we happy with the purchase and expected to get some good use out of them now and in the future. We took them back (early February) and explained what had happened. We were informed this was a seasonal item and they could neither refund it or issue a store credit. Funny, there is nothing printed on the receipt that states that nor were we informed by the clerk at the time of purchase. Normally I would have no problem with that. Perhaps the clerk forgot to mention it. Honest mistake. Where we do take issue, is the manager (Ryan, who refused to give us his last name) did not have the courtesy to at least address the matter personally. How unprofessional. Please note, we are not concerned about the money. That is a trivial matter. What is quite concerning is how management comports themselves when dealing with their clients and in particular, their business clients. Its very disappointing as we liked that the establishment was so conveniently close. Now we have to look elsewhere. Also, we believe it important that the corporate offices be informed about this incident. Again, a bit of professionalism would have gone a long way. read more

I had an awful experience at this store. I bought 3 gallons of Benjamin Moore paint for my bedroom which is $50 a gallon. I have painted my whole condo in Benjamin Moore paint and never had a problem matching from one gallon to the next. The next day I painted my bedroom and during the process realized that the paint was different shades. I got the first coat on, let it dry, then started the second coat, half way through, stopped for a lunch break and came back and it had dried a different color then the first coat. Fortunately, I was able to finish the room in the second can of paint but was afraid to use the 3rd because it wouldn't dry the same color as the 2nd. I went to the store with pictures that it had dried differently than the first coat, for a refund on the paint and was not given one. I was told there was nothing they could do because all 3 cans were the same color. This from having shaken the cans again and put 3 small dots on the color swatch. Telling them that dots may match but in the whole room it didn't. I still need to finish some edges and corners and am now afraid to because it may dry a different color that what is on there now. The manager just told me he couldn't give me a refund and told me how I should have painted the room. Thanks real helpful after that fact. Do not go to this store for paint. read more

This is a terrific, old fashioned hardware store. They ask you as soon as you walk in what they can help you with. And they actually DO help you. I want to support places like this, so I go out of my way to buy extra things I need there (and they have a lot of cool things). They have a parking lot in back, and they validate, but I found easy street parking. Also, there is a Petco and a CVS in the same building, so you can kill a lot of errands in one shot. The neighborhood chocolate factory smell is a big bonus. read more

Worst customer service!!!! Called to verify if item was available in store. Spoke to Chris, he stated that it was and that it came in white. I asked him to double check the size options. He put me on hold, came back and told me that it comes in a 4' version. Well, I walked to the store only to find out that it did not come in a 4' version and what I asked for was not actually available at all. Yep, defin only going to Best Buy or Home Depot for items. Inflated prices, terrible customer service, poor stock. read more

I have been going here for years and continue to admire the consistency in service and overall friendliness. The owner can be found stocking shelves, greeting guests, chatting with his long-time staff.
