H&B True Value - Guitar Friendly Hardware Store If you are a guitarist within driving distance, make your next hardware purchase at H&B True Value. I purchased a "good condition" Hohner HW200 acoustic guitar remotely from Florida. It arrived with a 10-12 inch crack at the binding. Yikes. Someone referred me to H&B True Value at 5329 N. Milwaukee, Chicago, IL, because they would have "C" clamps to clamp my guitar after I glued it back together. This is where I met store personnel Jesse and then Mike. I told Jesse I needed to clamp my guitar after gluing its binding back together. I needed 2 or 3 clamps. Mike then joined us and said, "Maybe we can fix it for you." Wow, give it a try. Mike and Jesse took me to the back work area where they immediately began gluing the binding, placing two 1X6s on the guitar for clamping, and then clamped the guitar. I asked how much to do it, Mike just smiled and said whatever you think its worth. I came back one day later to see the work Mike and Jesse had done. The guitar glue job went great. As I walked around the store with a guitar in my hands, I told Mike I'd pay $20 for the repair. Mike said $10 was OK. Meanwhile I met Joe at the store. Joe's the owner. Joe looked at me holding my guitar, smiled and said, "It's on the house." Wow, thank you so much. I shook hands with Joe, bought a few more things, and then paid at the counter. H&B True Value is NOT in the guitar repair business. But they certainly are in the customer friendly business. Went to my True Value hardware store, to purchase batteries for an Atomic Beam flashlight. The gentleman who assisted me noticed the corrosion at the battery site, indicated that the corrosion needed to be cleaned before new batteries are replaced. He did mention that he had just opened a packet of triple A batteries and placed them in the flashlight, and it worked! And did not charge me for the batteries. Went in search of Weber Charcoal I found online at $6.99 a bag due to it being discontinued and find 4 bags that are priced $14.99. So I ask the sales associate if they are on sale and pull up the ad to show him with him telling me "That's just the online price" when its clear you cant order it and it gives you the locations to find in store so I make him ask the manager and get the same answer. Also the sales associate did not have a mask on. Will never shop there again and truly love to support smaller business but they definitely lost mine. read more

If you think mom & pop hardware stores are too expensive, think again. H & B frequently runs 10% off coupons in the local paper. Even if they didn't, I would still go there. They don't stock items because they can get them cheap from China. They stock what works. Take dryer vents. Did you even know there was a choice for dryer vents? I called them after the one I got from a big box store (mistake!) fell apart. I made a call to H & B from work. The owner answered. He determined which one I had and said "you don't want that one. You want the less expensive one." Now how many times have you had a conversation like that with the owner of Home Depot or Lowe's? Thought so. They also re-screen window screens on site -- bonus! I was here again yesterday and they, again, had what I needed after I had been to Target, Walmart and HD looking for it. I think I have officially learned my lesson. I openly admit that I don't really love the cluttered, dim interior of this place. Luckly, they aren't selling ambiance. What I DO love is that they literally wait at the front door and greet you and ask what you're looking for in the least pushy way imaginable as soon as you walk in and lead you directly to your desired item. It's a great strategy - does anyone wander into a hardware store like this on a whim, just to "shop", um, no. I'm there because my $&!# is broke and I need some help - S.T.A.T. so I really appreciate their direct, down to earth, friendly approach. Also, my mom was helping me with something this weekend and we ran out of a supply and she walked up there and came back raving about how helpful they had been for her and that she was in and out of there in under 2 minutes. No B.S., no upselling, just competitive pricing with no drama. Honest help with reliable products - Isn't that what business is supposed to be about? Keep it up H&B. As soon as you walk into the store there is someone waiting at the door to help you find exactly what you need. They have all the typical items that you would expect to find, plumbing, paint, nuts & bolts etc. and also also repair small engines (lawn mowers & snow throwers) and windows. You will not find customer service like this at any "big box" store. read more

He purchased the store more than 19 years ago. He has been in the hardware business for over 40 years. In his 40 years of being in the hardware business he has learned to fix storms screens order merchandise and many more important things of running the hardware store.I know his biggest and most important part of the business is he knows how to deal with customers and fully deal with their personalities and their needs to complete a sale. His patience and his willingness to continue to understand the workings of any situations that has brought them into the stores for coming back again and again this has made Joe the ideal home & commercial hardware store owner and only neighbor hardware store to go to. Just wanted to say that the True Value on Milwaukee Ave, just north of Foster is hands down the best anywhere. The guys have fixed my lawn mower, repaired my windows and screens, killed my weeds, fixed my plumbing and electrical, make all keys that will work the first time and special ordered things I have looked for without me asking. They swap out my gas grill tank and have miraculous advice. I will go there first. All of them are great. May they stay there forever! read more
