The store is much bigger than it looks from outside. I just popped in to make a copy of a key. It took about a minute,as i was the only customer in the store.Very helpful and knowledgeable employees. I don't remember their names. One with a mustache and another was an older Asian gentlemen. I have been to this location few times before and they both helped me. Ech time had a positive experience. This is a great place. Although it is small, I found most everything I needed and the service is fabulous. The help is very patient, spent time to find me exactly what I needed and even modified a screw to fit my needs. The best thing about this place is that it is a spot where local children to get their bikes fixed for free. They need to pay for the materials; however the labor was free. As a retired teacher, any business who supports the young people deserves a special shout out and my business. read more

How much do I love these folks? Let me count the ways. So knowledgeable, endless sources of things, can put a name to "thingamabob" then you the correct size and other necessary part you didn't realize was missing.. Replace a window or mirror, repair a screen, fix a lawnmower or bike of broken furniture, rewire a lamp, change your watch batter for heaven's sake. Place looks like not much on the outside but is a cornucopia of all hardware and related on the inside. And the books! All-powerful catalogs of everything True Value offers and these folks can get for you with their next delivery, Frank, Jay, Glen and crew are really helpful - sometimes crusty but maybe I just bring that out - who knows? Bottom line: THIS PLACE GETS AT LEAST 80% OF MY HARDWARE DOLLARS. I've gutted and rebuilt three homes in 20 years and work on countless upgrades and these guys have kept me going all along. No lumber, no plants or rugs but I can get those anywhere. read more

Huge variety of hardware and household items -- far more items than suggested by the outside storefront. And the staff knows where each item is -- from the smallest screw to the biggest appliances. And they know which products work best for whatever project I am struggling with. They also repair screens and windows, and cut glass for picture frames. Friendly and very helpful. read more

This is one of my go-to businesses. They've been a neighborhood fixture for the many years I've lived in West Rogers Park/West Ridge and I've always found a friendly face whenever I go into the store. Great prices, value but best of all, just great customer service and an all-around friendly neighborhood vibe. It's small but they almost always have what I'm looking for. They answer questions and steer you to what you need rather than how much money they can peel off of you. And they never rush you and always make you feel like you're their most important customer. There is a place for big box stores but this True Value is a neighborhood gem. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. I agree with Jennifer that instructions are specific to problems, solutions are not high priced, and there is no pressure to spend more than required to do a quality repair. I will be back regularly as I complete different projects this season. read more

Great place, honest help, period.

The place represents the BEST of a local hardware store. The people that work here know their stuff. I have gone here to get just one nut, bolt or screw and the clerk knows exactly where to find it and it costs almost nothing (instead of buying a big box of them at Home Depot). AND, I also got a great deal on a snowblower! While their general inventory isn't as big as the big stores, you get knowledgeable efficient service, whether you're looking for an obscure fixture, want to know which kind of glue is good for which kind of job, whatever - they KNOW!....and it is a great place to go if you need a screen fixed, lawnmower tune-up, or have a pane a glass installed in a window - basically this place is the combination of a hardware store and a handyman. Whenever I can, I patronize them because they are a valuable resource in my neighborhood. I always pay cash (except when I bought the snowblower) because I want them to have the benefit of not paying the credit card charge. The better they do, the better they are! Buy local! read more

What a great little store! My neighbor asked me to make a copy of our condo building keys for her and suggested this was a good place to make reliable keys -that actually work! I've been to other "big box" home improvement stores and the keys turned out not to be cut properly and didn't work in my door. On my way to Coast True Value, I had a little difficultly finding it, so I called to ask for directions. A very friendly man (perhaps the owner?) answered and gave me very specific instructions and landmarks and I found it within a few minutes. It is right on Western, but was a little hard to find since they are currently remodeling; they don't currently have a big sign on the building. They do, however, have a sign in the window -with Christmas lights. -So once I knew that, it was easy to find! It's a small little store, but the staff is very friendly and it wasn't crowded. It's a perfect place to stop by if you need a home improvement basic and don't want to deal with the crowds at a bigger store. I'm really happy to have found this place! I'll be sure to stop in again next time I need to make a hardware purchase! read more

This is such a great hardware store. The owner is a super friendly, honest and knowledgeable man. I'm always amazed at how extensive their stock is. You can pick up folding tables and chairs to host a T-giving dinner, buy a gallon of paint, buy one odd-sized screw needed for a table, cleaning supplies, a light bulb and much more. I am not a handy-woman; so, I appreciate the knowledge of all of the sales people as well as their kindness and customer service.
