I love neighborhood hardware stores that don't have a big box feel. I seem to get lost within the big box stores when I need to find something. Oftentimes I leave frustrated because at the chain stores I'm passed off or rushed. I leave feeling like I'm a burden because they're too busy having to take care of something else. The staff at Lemoi is the opposite of that. They're super friendly and I'm always greeted by someone at the front entrance. They're consistent with having ample staff ready to help if you need something or have questions. Last month I found an LED snowman face on their webpage and called their site to see if I could pick it up in store. Within a week, they had my snowman and I left with my purchase pleased with the service and quality of my product. They seem to have a lot of items in stock too. Months ago, I went on a separate trip with my dad looking for a missing part to repair his sump pump. He had visited Lowes, Menard's and Home Depot with no luck but happened to find what he needed here at an affordable price. Lemoi Ace Hardware has been in the area since 1895. The ability to stay in business for that long says a lot about the quality and service they put out. My recent experiences are testament to that and I hope they stay in business for generations to come. read more

Wanted to buy a Milwaukee power inflator for $179. They did not have a bathroom to let me use before I purchased it. If you wanna spend a couple hundred dollars and pee. You can only do one of those things at this Ace Hardware. I was told by two employees I could not use the restroom, this is after I told them I would be buying a Milwaukee power tool. The second employee suggested I go to Gigio's across the street, buy a slice and use their bathroom, then come back and purchase the item from Lemoi Ace. Cannot recommend a business that has this attitude. I will purchase the tool somewhere else. Home Depot sells Milwaukee tools, and they all have bathrooms. Farm and fleet sells Milwaukee tools and they all have bathrooms. If you're looking to be treated as a fellow human, with kindness. This ain't the place. read more

I had a great experience at Lemoi! went in to get paint color ideas and got incredibly helpful advice from an associate in the paint section. I had almost forgotten what real customer service was like before this visit. October was patient, knowledgeable and seemed to genuinely enjoy the work. the whole time she was helping me, she also continued to assist others! all the other associates were attentively helping other customers. what an unusually pleasant experience! read more

I love Lemoi. Sorry to gush over something so, uh, ordinary. It's not like I'm talking about some savory gourmet meal here. It's a hardware store. However, they squeeze an incredible variety of stuff into the available space. Chances are, if they don't have it, you don't really need it. If you're a contractor, obviously, it's probably not going to match the big boxes. For anyone working on a project smaller than building a house or making huge renovations, Lemoi probably has you covered. Apparently, several people have had negative customer service experiences, and I regret that. I'll agree that there are one or two who are probably more brusque than cuddly, but that's actually part of the charm for me. read more

I was in dire need of fixing my honda accord's remote keyless tab. I had no idea how I was going to fix it and was panicking. After getting the name of the battery from Google, I decided to head over to Lemoi Ace Hardware to buy the battery. Well, not only did they help me find the battery right away but the wonderful man (Dave?) removed the old battery and installed the new one. When I offered to tip him (twice), he politely declined. Great Center of Town Neighborhood Hardware and all in one shop I shop at ACE Hardware in different cities. They mailed me a $5.00 ACE rewards card. So I feel it is worth signing up for their Reward Program if you own a crib or a regular for repairs. They close sharply, at their closing hour, so don't come in 10 min before close and ask for some paint to be mixed. They would prefer not to do so and tell you to come back the next day. The cashier was so rude to me. I was talking to someone while waiting in line and she interrupted us, ordered me to the counter pointing her finger as though I were a child, and was impolite, discourteous, unprofessional and when I called her attention to her behavior, sarcastic. You know, I've never known the actual name of this joint. I've been calling it "Evanston Hardware" for the last fifteen years. A few weeks ago I came here to get some keys cut and realized two things: 1. This was the third Evanston business that I visited upon moving to the area in 1995. 2. Every key that I have ever had cut has been done here. I've also read in various sources that this is Evanston's oldest business. All this is merely to say that "Evanston Hardware" and I have a lot of history, and that's why I'll go out of my way to shop here for anything remotely related to hardware. It's just a comfortable sort of neighborhood place that doesn't exist much anymore, BUT it's not a small store, and they have almost everything that you would ever need for your home. For example, while my parents were visiting recently, I finally decided to do something about the banshee shriek coming from my refrigerator door hinge. I bopped over to Davis Street, wandered down a couple of aisles, and boom, there it was--a wee 3-ounce can of WD-40, just the perfect size for my little job and to have some left over for future household squeaks. How did they know that I was going to need a tiny little can of WD-40? Anyway, the key cutting that cost a dollar apiece in the late 90s now costs two dollars. But I'll still do all of my hardware shopping here. Home Depot for Christmas trees, Lemoi Ace Hardware for everything else. read more

ACE always has useful stuff, and the staff will easily help you find what you want. On the plus side, they have everything from gardening to tools, etc. mini-rant: On the minus side, they have some *terrible* chemicals. Do people really know what happens with those bug killer chemicals to put on plants, etc? Nobody uses those because they are unsafe. If you can't tell by the smell of the chemicals when you pass the aisle that these are not made to be near the presence of humans, well....now you know. /endrant Also, the stuff on the shelves seems to be terribly dusty at time, so I don't know if it's sat for aeons (as it seems), or whether the place is just dusty. Overall though if you need to get something small and don't feel like going to home depot or Lowe's, this is probably a good bet if you're an Evanstonian. Really rude customer service in the paint department. There was one woman who helped us who was so nice was really trying to get us a color that we need. However her male colleague was so down right rude every single time he spoke to her and us. I felt like I couldn't even ask a simple question about paint without him snapping at me and my mom. I won't be going here again. Home Depot is much better with good customer service. Only reason I gave two stars instead of one was because of the nice woman who tried to help. read more

At Lemoi, however, the staff has been rude every time I've been there. They act as if it's the last thing they want to do is help you. I have shopped here for many years, and most of the salespeople are incredibly nice and helpful. However, the man who works in the paint department has been consistently rude and patronizing to me when I ask for even the most basic help (e.g., I try to find a specific paint to see if it's in stock). I gave him the benefit of the doubt a few times and assumed he was just having a bad day, but now I've experienced his rudeness and bad attitude so many times that I think he's just sexist and helpful to women who are doing their own projects and need some help. Or it's possible he's just a very rude person to everyone. I have bought paint from here for years for many house projects, but I will now be driving out of my way to go to the J.C. Wow, this hardware store has been around since 1885! Lemoi Ace Hardware is a no-thrills place to go if you need basic supplies for a project. Think of it as a neighborhood hardware store from the 1950's. It doesn't seem like it has changed since. The employees are friendly and helpful. The prices are average. It is a good alternative to Home Depot (which can be quite overwhelming) when all you need is a paint brush, screw driver, or heavy duty toilet declogger. Some fairly unfriendly bunch of older guys were working in there when I was in recently on a Saturday. I couldn't seem to get anyone to wait on me. When I did find someone he was already helping someone so he said, "It will be a FEW MINUTES, ma'am. We have to figure out what kind of nails this guy needs first." He looked like he was moving in slow motion, so I wandered off and looked for someone else. All I wanted was for someone to unlock the metal doors to the locked up spray paint section, so I could physically examine the different kinds of spray paint. I went back over to the section where they mix paint. This guy who mixes the paint had been busy, but now he was free. Some lady walked up to his counter and so he asked if he could help her, but she said no. I was standing right nearby so told him I could use help, and he just ignored me, and started talking to another person who had just walked up. Etc...etc...I've never been the most attractive woman in a room before, and had so much trouble getting customer service. I felt invisible, or like I would have much more luck wearing an old straw gardening hat, rumpled frumpy looking skirt, and loafers so someone there could relate to me better. When the guy who was done helping the man with the nails finally came back to find me, he asked me very hopefully if I had already been helped. I told him no, so he went and unlocked the cabinet for me and then seemed impatient that I was asking him which brands of spray paints had the least bothersome fumes, since I get bad headaches. He was very impatient because I didn't immediately know which brand I wanted. If it wasn't for the fact that they sell spray paint, I would never go in there in the first place. It's all the way over in Evanston, and I'm in Chicago, and the Home Depot near me is 100 times more helpful, has a much nicer store than this place. They knock themselves out at Home Depot to be friendly and helpful. Maybe I'm even spoiled because of them. If it weren't for the Ace brand of spray paints, I'd never go here again. read more

Super helpful and answered all of our questions and even gave us a couple good suggestions. Ordered a hibachi grill online & wanted it shipped to a store near me, couldn't pick the store right around the corner it showed Evanston as the closest. Picked item up & they handed me a fully assembled grill, no box! "We thought we were doing you a favor." Sure if I wasn't traveling on a bus & train, and if it wasn't a Christmas gift that I have to wrap! They had tossed the original box & paperwork. They did take it mostly apart & put it in another box. Overall very irritated, they could have called to ask if I wanted it put together. read more

Amazing sales. Two weeks ago they had a BOGO sale on light bulbs. They also have a full service paint mixing station and a huge selection of indoor paints. Plus all the garden maintenance materials you will need. The managers on duty are always super helpful. Dogs get treats at the counter, so we visit often as this is a must stop for my furry one on the walk through downtown Evanston. read more

I love this place so much! You will find things that you thought you never needed. They also have a really nice aisle with kitchen items, so my tupperware collection has definitely grown since moving a block away. I spend so much money here that I went and got an Ace Rewards cards. For some crazy reason, I love hardware stores, despite the fact that I don't generally USE hardware. But Lemoi Ace Hardware is the Best hardware store EVER! Here's why: 1. It's big. It has everything a crafty person could need, and even stuff one doesn't! Hardware, bathroom supplies, kitchen supplies, furniture, small appliances... 2. Very helpful staff. Ok, one time one of the sales guys got a little hoity-toity once. But admittedly this was prompted by a hoity-toity comment from my hoity-toity companion. 3. The women at checkout are very friendly as well as unintentionally hillarious. I don't think I've ever bought something without them making me laugh somehow. 4. I bought a coffeemaker from them 6 months ago. It was a reliable brand, so I saw no reason to keep the receipt. However, for some mysteriousl reason it stopped working last week. I went back sans receipt, explained the situation, and I was given a new coffeemaker no questions asked! Now THAT'S great customer service! read more

Moth balls. They can be necessary but also pose a real problem ;controlling and containing the smell is not easy. I went to Lemoi, and it turns out Larry, who works there, was an engineer for 37 years. The gaseous smell from mothballs can penetrate just about anything, except ................Saran Wrap. Not any old bargain wrap, SARAN WRAP. I am now SET!!! Thanks Larry. Shop locally, because you just don't get this kind of information on-line or at a big box store. I mean what are the chances of finding someone with the background to know this? Larry is the man, and Ace is the place. And I got a chemistry lesson, no charge. read more

I have not received a response from the manager-kind of makes me wonder if an employee deleted the email. I've only been in here a couple of times for set-building purposes, but the place seems to have a good supply of things that one would normally find at a hardware store. When I had to get a very particular kind of screw and nut, the man at the counter in the back was very helpful. In general, actually, the employees seemed to know where things were, which doesn't always happen in stores that have such a variety of goods. A helpful person came out, measured the hole, recommended a longer bolt, screwed it in for me, and explained what do do if it came out again. All for something like $1.24. I don't spend a lot of time at hardware stores, but when I do shop at Lemoi, they have just about everything I need, and if they don't have it, they'll get it! They are also very helpful if you have a hardware problem. Here's an example. I had a Volvo car door opener that automatically opened my wife's Volvo car, except that the key in the opener was stuck and would not open fully. After Volvo told me that it couldn't be fixed and would cost $200 to replace, I took it to a locksmith in Glenview, who also said that he couldn't open the opener to free up the key. Then I took it to Lemoi as a last resort. The nice guy who works in the store's key department and makes spare keys took this problem on. After about 1/2 hour of working on it, he was able to open up the opener and free up the key. It can now be used. I asked him what I owed him for his assistance, and he replied "Nothing, just your business." He's got that, and so has Lemoi Ace Hardware for any future hardware that I need! F. G. Coggin read more
