I bought a product here only to be returned shortly thereafter due to defective. I was worried about a small hardware place and their return policy - but was pleasently surprised. With my receipt, they took the product and allowed me to replace it, no questions asked. In addition, the customer service was friendly. Since Home Depot wasn't within walking distance, Ace Hardware was where it was at. I bought a grill for my then-boyfriend there (Just a cute little Weber for his basic grilling needs), I bought spackle for the walls of my apartment (Oops, I guess that's why they tell you not to drill holes...!) and several little tubs of the wrong color of paint for my walls (Why isn't there just one shade of white?!). But I loved that their staff was so helpful (Didn't know what spackle was until I asked...) and I loved that it was the traditional hardware store you don't find in cities like Houston (where I spent most of my youth, sweating my way into college, which is how I ended up at Ace Hardware to begin with). People complain about Chicago winters, but it's the death heat and humidity of summer that brought me into Ace. After a Saturday morning trip to the Evanston farmers' market, I knew it was time to install my window unit A/C. Frustrated after an attempt to get the unit in the window and finding that I needed an extension cord, I walked here. An employee approached me when I walked in, asking if I needed help. As a knowledgeable-seeming older man, he helped me find a heavy duty cord that could help. After paying a very reasonable, maybe even cheap, price, I went home to find that I didn't buy a long enough cord. When I went back without my receipt, the cashier was incredibly helpful and let me exchange the cord for one that would work for my needs. Good customer service! I guess I'm not giving them 5 stars because it was hot in the store, not sure if they had turned on the A/C yet. read more

Good hardware store. Ace hardware stores always make me feel nostalgic in a way because they're a bit more rustic, not so concerned about squeaky floors and having such a polished image (not that there's anything wrong with that). I like the fact that it's a real building and has been there for a long time as part of Evanston history (a real town hardware store, go figure!). That said, they usually have most of what I need in terms of hardware. Their staff are very helpful and knowledgeable and practical. That was a really cool thing I noticed. They do seem pretty busy, but it's a good place to get stuff conveniently. If you want the big and special items stuff you'll have to go to Lowe's or other places like that. read more

I went to Lemoi every day while I was renovating my Cafe for everything from electrical parts to plumbing parts and tools. They are well staffed, and their salesmen actually know what they're talking about, unlike Home Depot's. They have a surprisingly big selection, especially of O-Rings and other small plumbing parts. I grew up here in Evanston, and Lemoi Ace Hardware has always been a part of my town. Now that my business (working on Doublebasses, the largest member of the violin family) has grown, I'm finding myself doing lots of woodworking. As the "landlord" of a two-flat, there are always household fix-it and maintenance supplies that I need. When I heard the owner of Home Depot exclaim that "anyone who votes Democrat is an idiot," I reckoned that I was just too dumb to enter their doors EVER AGAIN! I'm delighted to be a loyal customer of Lemoi's - they are always so helpful (the young ladies who work there usually laugh at my corny jokes!), and the prices are surprisingly competitive, when compared to the Big Box rivals. Items here are quite over-priced, you will be better off in venturing to the Home Depot in Evanston. Service-wise, it is nothing spectacular. The staffs are not overly friendly. The store gives me the feel of a dollar general/dollar tree vibe, I think it's the set up. However, we come here when we need a spare key, which is quite convenient. You can get a spare for less than $5. read more

The girl (dyed red hair, funky cut) at the cashier was sarcastic and laughing at me with her co-worker while I was trying to find the (very nice) employee who had my entire set of keys-as she was copying them. OK, this place is like the "anti-Home Depot" or something or other. The exact opposite of the big, unhelpful stores that now dominate. The people there are helpful, smile and take an interest in your needs. Spending your money there seems like one more slap at Home Depot and their brand of customer service. read more

This place is fantastic!! Today was my first time there and I plan to go back many, many more times in the future. While there I asked 4 different employees for help in 4 different areas and each of them was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I was worried that, because they are a smaller "mom and pop" store the prices would be higher but that was not the case at all. I was pleasantly surprised at how good their prices were--and I bought things in 3 different depts (keys, paint, drain cleaner). And on top of the helpful staff and good prices, they made 5 copies of my keys in less than 10 minutes! Every time I come in they are SO nice and helpful, but not annoying helpful. So I live down the street and I walk everywhere with my dogs. They tell me all the time that my dogs are welcome in the store (sometimes I bring them in, other times I don't want the hassle so I park them outside). How cool is that? I wanted to get some keys made, so I stopped here and I wasn't really sure where to go but I asked Gail and immediately she stopped what she was doing just to make my keys. She was explaining that anyone there can made keys, because they do not have a designated person that does it. They have some very old machinery that makes the keys, that are actually pretty cool, and it is done so fast. I think for 9 keys I was out of there in less than 7 minutes. A follow up review is warranted...consistently month in, month out, Butch, Scott, Rich and the rest of the staff at Lemoi go out of their way to get what I need, when I need it and that says a lot. I essentially have a full tool and die shop in my space, and am constantly buying specialty items from Snap On, Grainger, etc...items that it would make NO SENSE for a retail hardware store to carry. However, for fasteners, electrical. plumbing, and odds & ends LEMOI is an absolute win. They have also done very well by me with cordless Milwaukee M12 and M18 power tools. If you are close to downtown Evanston, this shold be your first stop. read more

They are always open and have a wide variety of stuff to buy. For a small hardware store, this place is well stocked. The true feather in Lemoi's cap is the service. I can't get 5 steps before someone wants to help me out. Not in an obnoxious/hovering way though. They truly just want to make sure you get what you want. I have to be honest, most days I believe that the art of customer service is all but lost. But after my first trip to see Mozes, Quinn and the rest of the gang at Lemoi Ace in Evanston, I can safely say that isn't the case at 1008 Davis Street. The store and its customer service reminds me of the Ace Hardware I grew up frequenting. Sure, there's no delicious hot dog smell of yesteryear, but the friendly help and attention to detail are still there. Mozes went way above and beyond to help with some rusted out old bolts on a piece of furniture we were working on and for that we cannot thank him enough. Not only did he go to town on the bolts, he also took the time to take us around the store and help with whatever else we needed. I have a new hardware store to visit whenever I need help or something for the next project. Kudos, Mozes! And I have to say, you have a fantastic beard. read more

The people that work there are very helpful and knowedgeable, the inventory is varied, and the atmosphere neighborly, if a bit bland and unesthetic. Normally a good place to shop--fairly helpful staff, good inventory of most anything you need for the house, and more pleasant to wander through than a big box store. BUT ... watch out if you want to recycle a can of paint. I took a couple of cans in late last week. And I wasn't even told that there would be any cost before I shopped for other items. In checking my charge receipt today, my eyes popped! $4.50 per gallon! I know, I know I should have checked and objected at the time. But I didn't. So I went in today to talk with the manager about 1) the large fee and 2) not being told about the fee. He was super defensive, gave no credence to my displeasure, and basically dismissed me. I came here to make a copy of my car keys. When the key didn't fit perfectly, the manager walked out to my car to add some lubricant and tried the key out himself. The dealer's copy didn't work either, but at least I received excellent service. read more

This location is the best Ace hardware in Chicagoland. Everyone here is super friendly and helpful. I have always been satisfied by the level of selection at this store. Lemoi Hardware is a nice old fashioned small town hardware store. The kind of place where, if you need just one O-ring or machine screw, and aren't sure what size, you can stand at the back and sift through drawers and drawers of loose hardware until you find exactly what you need. Most of the tools and hardware are displayed to be touched, not hermetically sealed inside bubble packs. The sales folks are knowledgeable and have helped me many times, even when I've been stupid and didn't bring in the part I'm trying to replace, and I'm guessing what will fit. This place is strong on stuff that suburban residents (grills, garden supplies), apartment landlords (industrial strength gallon jugs of Drano, electrical, plumbing) and students need (toaster ovens, shower curtains, containers of any size and shape). There's a little paint shop, a key center, housewares, cleaning goods, chain cutting center and on and on. They often run a half off one $50-or-less item deal on the Downtown Evanston phone app--I got a nice electric space heater for 25 bucks, rather than $50, because I used it. The place looks small if you're used to big box Home Depots or Menard's, but there is a surprising variety of items for sale here, if you poke around a little. read more
