I have shopped at this store for most my life, Usually employees are very helpful and sweet. Today I went to return a few products that my elderly parents had and had not opened/used that they asked me. The manager Bill came over and in front of three young cashiers that he was training said, "what are you trying to do, empty out someone's garage." Without the cashier having even finished scanning the items to see if they could be returned he had made his decision/judgement. I find his comment disinhibited, judgemental, and quite unprofessional. In a day where people can more easily shop from amazon or home depot down the street; the ones that continue to come to your store out of loyalty you lose with nasty managers such as Bill. read more

This is my neighborhood Ace Hardware, and their service is incredible. My auto dealer couldn't seem to provide the correct battery for my car. I wasn't sure if Ace Hardware would be able to help me. They did, and for a very nominal price. They worked hard to change the old battery! I'll remember them in the future, and if you're in the area, I definitely recommend this store for their great customer service! read more

We still go to this Ace because it is the one nearest us, but raised one star since my last review -- each time we have gone back has been for something relatively small, but they do seem to really want to help you out. Because I was dumb I had to have locks rekeyed, and while it took quite some time, it was done accurately which for locks is the most important. They have always had multiple checkers available and I've almost never seen a line even on weekends! Kudos! read more

Their customer service is terrible. They have no idea. The employees seem to be all retired people except teenage kids at the register ringing customers up. I had basic questions about a few products which they could not answer. The pricing on items isn't great either. Hare really no value. I'll head to Lowe's or home depot next time. Wow, this is by far the biggest Ace Hardware location I have ever been in. They have a commensurately large parking lot to go with it too right on busy Waukegan Road as well. Being in prime Glenview, my first thought was "I wonder what their property tax bill looks like, lol" We swung by here because we had a complimentary promo for a knife sharpening. It turns out their knife sharpening fee is $7.99, which is a bit of a premium, but so are most services and things in an Ace Hardware. They're all about friendly service and convenience, and this place fits that mode very well. Friendly staffer Bob B helped with the sharpening which is done via what looks like a vending machine for such. I don't believe this service is available at many Ace Hardware's that I've seen anyway. If you need anything from a hardware store, there's a very good chance this place has it. read more

Since HD has not given the customer service they claim to give, we started to go to Ace Hardware again , like the good old days ! Most items, especially non electronic "stuff" is by enlarge available , not much of a price difference . Excellent customer service by the owner when an employee didn't know about a certain item we were looking for . Don't have to wait in line for a return item with an agnostic look from a customer service representative either, while having plenty of parking spaces available . Today's experience was really bad at this location. I initially went to the store to look for a replacement Toto toilet flapper and to return two new unused extension cords. Upon walking into the store, I found two employees talking in a side isle and kind asked if they could help me locate the toilet flappers. They appeared annoyed that I interrupted them. As I observed this, I actually stated to them that I was sorry for interrupting them. I received no response. The employee and I walked to the isle to locate a replacement flapper. The explained that it needed to be a Toto flapper as I wanted it to be the same part replacement. The employee was initally trying to sell me a Kohler flapper that didn't align correctly with the part I had brought in to match a replacement. Within a minute or two looking for the part replacement I wanted, the employee stated that they didn't seem to have the same part. I told the employee I would subsequently look online for the part since they didn't have it. I subsequently walked to the battery isle, picked up some batteries to purchase and proceeded to the checkout counter to buy the batteries and make a return of the extension cords. At the counter, I spoke to employee stating that my mother-in-law had recently passed away and they had asked me to return these two extension cords since they had originally purchased 4 and had only used 2. I explained that I was not looking for money back since they did not have the original receipt but would accept any credit received. The employee contacted a manager and the situation was explained. They managed to locate a purchase of the cords, but the manager stated that he would only accept 1 cord for a merchandise credit, and that I would need to go to another Ace store to return the other. This alone made no sense to me, but I went with it as I had no choices. The employee ringing up the transaction did not know how to conduct the transaction as she was asking other employees for help. Within a minute, the manager returns to me and told me that he changed his mind on the return and that he would need to make a call to "Carol" to verify the return. I waited several minutes for a resolution. The manager never returned to explain anything to me, they had the ringing employee basically tell me "sorry they won't accept the return". As she explained this to me, I was watching the manager speaking with another male employee as it was evident that they were talking about me and the return. I was utterly disgusted on how this unfolded. No accountability, no customer service, no humility, no respect. As the manager evidently didn't not want to come back and speak to me, I told the employee to ring me up for the batteries and I left. The entire experience today was TERIBLE! I have repeatedly supported this store and attempt to support it over Home Depot and Lowes, but after today's experience, I'm done! They will never see a cent from me or from our families again. So frustrating that this stores customer service was terrible today. Glenview is a small knit community. People will know how and realize this isn't correct to treat people this way. read more

This is the best Ace. Everyone is so incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. If I'm ever stumped on a project, I go here. They have good quality items for a fair price. I am always amazed at what they have, they carry things I need that even the big box stores do not. I buy all our paint from here. Ask for Bob, he is the BEST. read more

I actually still have three chairs and a side table that I bought here 30 years ago. When I lived in town, this was always my go-to hardware store. Very well stocked store and recently they were the only Ace I could find that had the Traeger tray liners that I needed. Extremely helpful and polite staff will keep you coming back. I love shopping at Ace and try to support local businesses whenever possible. This one is closest to me near Morton Grove. I usually order online and pick up as their stock is limited which I get. They are not like the big box home improvement stores and I like the local community support. Not a fan of their management here so anything that requires a manager usually stinks. The cashiers are friendly, the floor associates are nice with the exception of the few older white guys. The young guys working around the parking lot and garden supplies are always super helpful even for DIYers/contractors like me. Again, I try to support my local Ace when I can but sometimes I go to Park Ridge for returns or special orders because I cannot tolerate their managers here. Happy home improving! read more

Count on Customer Service at Weiss Ace. His name was Tom and we shared 4 phone calls one evening as he scoured the shelves for our Christmas Garland. Lowes and Home Depot's websites showed they had garland but there was none in the store. Then I remembered Weiss Ace. I called and Tom added up all of the boxes of lighted garland he could find to hit my desired 84" feet. He was thoughtful of my budget and helpful through and through. We use this hardware store all the time. I'm giving them three stars because their reward program is ridiculous. I went in there last week, I had a $10 off coupon for $50 or more. I had $89 in merchandise. The clerk tells me that my $10 off coupon is no good because some of the stuff that I was buying was on sale. This happens all the time. You get up to the $50 and they figure out a way to not honor the $10 off coupon. I can't even tell you how many times I've had a $10 coupon rejected. Why even have an awards program if you're not going to honor it. Either that or they only are good for five dollars off and only in a two week period. It's incredibly frustrating. I just don't even want deal with the rewards program anymore it's such a joke and waste of time. read more

This is the best store around, even if you are not that into hardware. The store almost always has what you need, and if they don't, they usually can order it easily or tell you where to find it. The employees at this Ace are unusually helpful. At essentially every visit, you are asked whether or not you'd like any help. If you ask for help, you get great service. Most of the employees know about a variety of the store's products and typical projects; and, all are polite. Diana, the long-time cashier, is a particularly lovely person. Weiss even hires local high-school and college-aged youth, which is great for the community. Finally, as others reviewers have mentioned, Weiss raises funds for the Children's Miracle Network every year. These donations go to our area's Lurie's Children's Hospital (formerly known as Children's Memorial). What more can one ask for from a local merchant! read more

On the one hand, the place is pretty large, so you will probably find things here that you wouldn't expect in a regular hardware store. On the other hand, I spent thirty goddamn minutes in this store trying to get two keys copied. No, it wasn't busy, and the key-cutting machine was not broken. The first guy spent about seven or eight minutes looking for a blank to match my small file-cabinet key. At some point during the course of taking down a blank, comparing it to the original, and putting back the blank (repeat about 20x), he accidentally hung my key back on the rack instead of the blank. Then he went on comparing new blanks to that blank until he realized his mistake. Then he called over a second guy, and they spent seven or eight minutes looking for my key on the rack. When they finally found it, they summoned a third employee, and between the THREE of them, they spent another seven or eight minutes locating two appropriately sized blanks, cutting the keys, and bagging and tagging them. Then it took me about 95 seconds to check out. At no time did anyone act as if my time were valuable or as if this were an unusual occurrence that should not fall within the normal range of customer experiences. Only at the very end did the original employee say "I'm sorry that it took so long." Heaven forbid that you might discount the 30-minute service that you provided which should have taken closer to five. These guys were "nice" old gentlemen, but they really screwed the pooch on this one. Bad operational execution, terrible customer service. Up until today, I had visited Lemoi Ace in Evanston for all of my key-cutting needs since 1995, literally every single one. Today I opted for the geographical convenience of Weiss Ace...bad move on my part. Lemoi, I'm sorry for cheating on you with a two-bit hoor who gave me V.D. I'll never stray again. read more

The staff does not treat patrons with respect. Having a medical exemption, I was not able to mask up to enter the store. Instead of asking me politely to leave or offering me an alternative - curbside service, phone order (recommended by the State of Illinoios Coronavirus Response guidelines) - the staff was loud, rude and demeaning to me and challenged my veracity. I understand others are uncomfortable with no mask and I comply with requests to leave; in general, other retail establishments make polite requests and often offer accommodations; sadly John Weiss Ace Hardware has not established a respectful culture. This is not the way to treat patrons. Just be nice. read more

JT, owner John's son, stopped out front about 15 years ago while I was walking Daisy, my miniature schnauzer, to pet her and chuck her under the chin, so I was sold. But my family had been patronizing them for years before that. About 8 years ago, I broke the handle off a garden fork while trying to break up some hard soil. I carried the two pieces into the store, and JT, with just a nod, brought me a new fork and sent me off. You think I would go anywhere else? It's a wonderful place, all around. Bill McKay's attention and experience were perfectly suited to my needs. I saved a lot of money by fixing the plumbing problem. I try not to give too many 5 star ratings. This particular Ace is awesome. Normally with hardware stores when you have to ask a question or two it's A.) impossible to find someone and B.) there's a 75% chance they're unhelpful. Not the case here! There are always a TON of staff and they're all incredibly knowledgeable. And when they're not they know each other well enough to get the person who does n ow pretty quickly. I had a missing screw for my son's like-a-bike. It's a very unique double hex thing and I was sure a hardware store wouldn't have it. Brought it here and they explained to me what it is (it's actually a furniture fixture screw) and when they didn't have the right length they cut one down for me and made sure it fit. Totally worth 5 stars!! If you're semi-handy and need some help getting handier and taking care of your home or yard this is a great place to go. read more

Wow, I cannot say enough about the customer service here...just about everyone is friendly and willing to go out of their way to help you. I've shopped here a few times to get color samples for a house project and the man at the color station spent a lot of time helping me pick out some good colors and made sure I left with the right ones...The staff is like a family here. Way better than Home Depot when it comes to customer service. This is my go to place for all my hardware needs, especially when I'm in a pinch and they are close to home. I love going here because there is always more then one person who asks me if I need help with anything. Whereas i go to home depot or lowes and usually have to search for someone in a huge store. Also, I probably shouldn't mention this but the guys helped cut my kids pinewood derby cars for me and notched out a space for weights! Life savers they are! I was told to go here to get my car key looked at as I needed to get a new one made - a recommendation from a local shop I trust. The man I talked to at Ace simply listened to me explain, then told me he wouldn't help, offering no explanation. He then told me in a very condescending tone to "try the hardware store down the street when they open in the morning." Absolutely will not be going here again, and would not recommend others go here either if they are looking for assistance. read more
