Second time (trying) to purchase wallpaper from Thybony on Clark: Day 1: Arrived at store at 5:45pm (website says hours are until 6:30pm); I was advised they were shutting down and "interior designer" made it clear I wasn't getting help today. I actually picked something out quickly and told her I had my measurements, but she insisted I needed to re-measure. Again, she made it clear I needed to call back the next day as I was apparently interrupting her exit. Day 2: Left message at 8:45am with measurements again and to ask price. Day 2: Called back at 12:30pm and talked to same person I left message for and saw the day before; she said she wasn't sure if she got my message, and realized she never checked pricing. She promised she would check pricing and also confirm if I could return an unused roll, and call me back that day. Of course, no call back. Day 3: Called at 10:15am and she (the person I had talked to before) wasn't there. Apparently the other wallpaper person was supposed to be there at 9, but according to the person who answered the phone said he didn't show up. What is this place and why are they so arrogant? It's apparently full of people who act like they are doing you a favor by even looking at you. read more

Aside from the one time I was in here and had a pretty frustrating experience with the "design" side (3 out of 4 of the wallpaper books I took home to test turned out to be discontinued, so I had to start completely over), the paint side is a frigging blessing. Especially now that they have moved down the street and the layout is better, merchandise is priced and displayed well, I am willing to pay more for better service and quality. Trust me when I say that $10 quart of Glidden paint will not seem like such a bargain when you have awful coverage and you want to scoop your eyeballs out with a spoon from the sheer frustration of it all. Pay a bit more from the start and get a good brand! Also when you go in ask for Jim. He is the only one I will deal with and I get amazing service every single time. Went here because I like to support local business and I thought they'd be more knowledgeable than the guys at the big box places. WRONG. They hard-sold me into buying their store brand paint ("one-coat coverage") and it was the worst paint I've ever used. The primer (another recommendation) had awful coverage and didn't hold the paint well at all. The paint coverage was abysmal. Had to use two coats to cover the white primer, since the guy assured me there was no need to tint the primer - wrong again. I am guessing he just didn't want to be bothered to tint the primer, which they are more than happy to do at other places. Thanks, guys - the imporant thing is that you saved yourself some effort. Who cares that I had to spend an extra two or three hours to put up a third coat? Bottom line: Any place that hard-sells you crap products just because their margin is better on it doesn't deserve your business. Save your money and time and get your paint at Ben Moore's or one of the big boxes - I've had OK luck with Lowes and HD. read more

I am painting my apartment and went to Thybony several weeks ago under a recommendation of my best friend. Thybony has been around for over a hundred years and they have a great reputation. However, my visit was less than positive. The store was clean and organized. My goal was to find paint colors, and I saw that they only had Benjamin Moore. I spent several minutes before Thybony's Color Consultant finally acknowledged me and asked me if I needed any help. I had shopped at Farrow & Ball at Merchandise Mart and was looking for a light midtone gray similar to Pavilion Grey and asked the her if she could recommend several shades. She said something along the lines of, "Well, we have thousands of colors, you just have to look". I was very turned off by this comment. She couldn't have been more unhelpful. (For the record, I've been looking at grays at Sherwin-Williams and I can name several mid-tone grays off the top of my head. Either she didn't know anything or she was too lazy to help me.) After being taking a few swatches (their color selection is okay, but I was disappointed with the yellows). The employees at the sales and cash register were far more courteous and helpful when I went to see their selection of paints. Unfortunately, Thybony mostly carry Benjamin Moore. I was hoping for more brands. I wanted to like Thybony. I had been looking forward to visiting the store, but the Color Consultant's poor customer service left a negative impression. I have a background in design, and if I had her job, I would love to help people pick out colors. That's the best and only fun part of painting a home. read more

This review is for the paltry assortment of wallpaper books on the "design side." I was hoping to avoid a trip to the Mart (and an annoying session with a "Designer on Call"), so I popped over to Thybony to see if I could find anything suitable for my master bath. I may have found something decent IF the woman working had acknowledged that I was alive. It was a complete waste of time. I see now from other reviews that I am not the only person who has had the same problem, and wish I had read the reviews before wasting an hour of my life I can never get back. I often have mental blocks about various kinds of home repairs. Everything seems impossible to me at the beginning, as did the thought of painting my new apartment. I was very nearly stuck on issues like, "Where do I buy paint?" and "What if they don't have the colors I want?" Irrational, I know. So, I wandered into Thybony on Saturday feeling the weight of the painting world on my shoulders. I hate those moments when you have to say things to someone behind a counter in a store like, "I have to paint and I don't know how." There's so many reasons to be humbled by such a statement. But these people saved me. A very kind guy behind the counter walked me through amounts, finishes, needed supplies, and just let me talk through some of my major concerns. He couldn't have been more friendly. There were about a gazillion colors to choose from. I got the Thybony brand paint, which is the cheapest, and it worked like a charm. The colors were true. I now love my newly painted apartment. I can't say about price relative to the other "big box" stores but I didn't think it was overly expensive and I basically got "the works." But even if it was a little more than the others, I'm planning to return here for whatever I need. The customer service I think couldn't be beat. read more

Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's not so great. We finally had polite service on our most recents visit, but that's been the exception. Usually, the wait at the counter is lengthy and confusing. The counter is set up as a big square and there's no system to figure out who's next. Expect a bit of a tussle. The staff can sometimes be nice but usually is aloof and disinterested. Nobody seems to particularly care if customers are lined up. The paint selection is good. Benjamin Moore paints and samples are most welcome. Also good tools and supplies are available. Pricing seems a little higher than Home Depot or others. read more

I have been here quite often, since they used to carry a paint color no one else has. My experience has always been limited to buying just that one color and some sponge brushes. They have now stopped carrying it, possibly due to the economy and sure profits. There was a lot of mix-up on my recent special order of this same color they no longer carry, which has been very inconvenient. I don't know if I will do a special order here again or not. Let me start by saying: I am not a painter. I walked into the store completely overwhelmed by my decision to paint a single room in my apartment. I picked my color and braced myself for an up-sell when asking for help in choosing an appropriate paint. Not so! The staff were super friendly! My guy walked me through the different finishes, helped me calculate the best option for coverage and found an affordable paint for me. I'll never go anywhere else. Saturday morning, I'm a bit groggy when I walk in. I was immediately greeted by at least 3 people at the counter. I explained to one young fellow that, I'm a do it yourselfer. This however would be my first try at wallpaper. He got the message without being condescending. Told me he himself was only a novice but would get me a pro. Up comes this really dynamic, cheery woman, Sherry was her name. She took me through a step by step process, got me everything I needed to start and finish the job. She even gave me a step by step printout of what to do. They have tons of really beautiful wall-coverings and designer on the premises too. Even though I already had the wallpaper, Sherry was excited to show me all the other options available. My FAVORITE part is that Thybony will custom mix any Benjamin Moore sample for you. $5.99 for 4 oz. No one else will do that....you'd have to buy a quart elsewhere. It was so worth $54 to test all of the paints I wanted to get the exact perfect shade. The guys are all really helpful and polite, too. Truth be told, I know about colors but not the actual act of painting too much. I was a little intimidated by all of the painting gear, but fortunately, I've hired someone to do the tough stuff and I only have to deal with the fun stuff like picking the colors. read more

To be perfectly honest, I've only been in Thybony a couple times, but they get five stars because of the following: About nine months ago my girlfriend moved into my place. She (I suppose) naturally felt the need to decorate, paint, and generally move things around. I still had a few IKEA-grade, sawdust-and-glue, very beige pieces of furniture in the office that we had just painted grey. The girlfriend asked if she could paint them black, and I agreed (but not to repainting the antique library desk, no way). If sleeping late was an Olympic even you'd have seen my face on your Wheaties by now. One late Saturday morning I woke halfway up to my girlfriend saying "Don'tworryI'llfixitberightback!" after which she ran out the door. I woke up a few minutes later to find my bookshelf on the deck. You know how if you write on something non-porous with a felt-tip pen and then rub it you get this streaky, smeared, pooling mess? That's how the bookshelf looked. Anyways, the girlfriend had bought the wrong kind of paint for whatever IKEA laminate is made of. The guys at Thybony helped her out. Thanks guys. The bookshelf looks great, by the way. read more

Yay! Good experience. We worked together to do a custom color -- and when it didn't work on my wall, they had no problem remixing it for free to add more depth to the color. I deducted a star because of a pretty important miscommunication: I was very clear about wanting an eggshell/semi-gloss. We had a long conversation about it. Then, after I gave the go-ahead to the MOST expensive "scubbable" paint (which the salesperson recommended for my bathroom), a Matte pant was delivered into my hands. Um, I thought we just had a conversation about this! Now it's too late! At least it's just a bathroom and a quart of paint. Otherwise, I may have been a little pissed. Anyway, things I really like about this place: the sample color option another yelper mentioned ($5 for any -- ANY -- Benjamin Moore color -- so you don't have to guess.) Easy parking on this section of Clark. Free coffee. Open every day of the week. Big, clean bathroom! They even have a wallpaper section with consultants ready to answer questions. I have bought all my paint for my condo at Wm. Thybony in Andersonville and absolutely love the team here. They are always so helpful in finding exactly the right color to match my accessories and create the right tone of what I need. Today, I had to do a very minor paint touch up. Unfortunately my paint can would not open. I took it in to Wm. Thybony, fully prepared to have to buy more, but asked if they could help me in trying to get it open since it was for such a minor repair. After a few laughs about the can looking like it had gone through trying to be opened with the jaws of life, they simply said, "let me see what I can do". I could hear a few of the employees talking about the condition of the can and the paint, suggesting that it was just better to buy new. The gentleman (I'm kicking myself for not getting his name) who was helping me said, "she only has a very small touch up spot to do so if we can make it work, I would love to help her out." Wow! Not only did they get the can open, but they moved the remaining paint to a different container and did some very creative crafting to make it functional so I could get it home. I was shocked when they didn't charge me anything and said they were glad to help. Now that's Customer Service!! As I was leaving the store, another customer said "and that's how they keep customers for life". So true!! I won't go anywhere else. The guys at Thybony really know their stuff. We showed up with 4 paint cans. We didn't know the quality of the paint for three cans, and for the fourth can, we just needed to see if they could reproduce the color. The guy helping us told us that there was nothing wrong with the three cans, and he just shook them up for us. For the 4th can, they were able to reproduce the color. Very helpful and super friendly. Avoid doing business with Thybony at all costs. I have wasted more than three months trying to get these people to complete a repair on an expensive roller blind I bought from them several years ago. They sent a guy to my place in October, and he was supposed to order the parts and be back in a week or two. In December, I made my sixth phone call to ask why the repair has not been made. That is when I was told that these people had not ordered all of the required parts. I was told the missing part would be sent by air. That was more than a month ago, and they have yet to call me to schedule the repair or explain why the repair was delayed. For more than three months, the roller blind has been decorating my living room floor -- where they left it. If you want to deal with very polite people who lack the competence to service what they sell in a timely manner, then Thybony is the place for you. read more

I love the guys at Thybony. They are helpful and dont make fun of me too much when they see me three times in one day. All of the guys who have helped me so far have been super helpful and friendly. I was kind of indecisive in choosing a color to accent my walls and they were patient and even humorous. The store brand paint , Stockholm, has great coverage and is cheaper than some of the other big named brands without skimping on quality. They had better get used to seeing me I still have two more rooms to paint. read more

I went in to buy black paint for fixing up an old dresser my fiancee and I bought. The guy who helped me was pretty friendly and told me that they didn't have Rusoleum Black (which I know is an odd paint for a dresser, but I've had good luck with it in the past). He told me he'd mix black for me. After I gathered up my tools, he told me that it might look gray at first, but it would dry darker- to black. It did not. It wasn't even a terribly dark gray. It looked like a crappy metal file cabinet gray. When I took it back he said he'd mix a new one for me and wouldn't use any white in it. They also let me grab new brushes and a roller head. When he gave me the new can, I asked if it would dry darker than the spot on the lid because it still looked gray. He said "it's black" and opened up what looked like a can of gray paint, saying "see? It's black." It's gray. It's darker gray than the first gray, but it's gray. After the second time, I figure I'll just eat the cost and go somewhere else and get the stuff I'd originally gone in for. I guess it's my fault for assuming that a paint store could mix black paint. read more

I was having a problem with my gutters peeling, so I stopped by and "pick" these guys brain, I was immediately greeted by the guys on the counter and ask if I needed help, so I told this fellow that I'm having a peeling problems on my gutters, he seemed a little lost, he then ask this person who was emptying the garbage cans, if he can suggest what I should do (I'm thinking....what would this guy know about paint ?) He turns out to be a manager of the paint department. This very well spoken guy taught me step by step to solve my situation,mixed my color, and walked me out to the car ! that's right walked me out to my car! can anyone beat that? Price might be slightly higher but this person justified every cents of it. If your a HOME DEPOT shopper that shops for price, don't go here. If you like your projects done right with a great service and awesome selections of products, this is the place for you. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! I am a painting contractor and even I have a hard time getting street level service from the counter guys. They always seem have a poor attitude and give me the impression that they are doing me a favor! My paint orders are never ready even after the fact that I called one day in advance, wrong colors tinted, messy store and so on. I cannot imagine what a retail customer goes through, but I guess after reading some of the reviews I'm not surprised. There are other paint stores that really appreciate the business and it reflects by appearance and service. Get it together guys, its not like it use to be anymore. read more

We've gone here for our small paint jobs for the past couple of years and have been thrilled. We'll continue to come back for many more. However- On our last purchase to the store, my partner asked one of the newer employees for help. The employee was super nice, but it was easy to tell he didn't really know too much about paint and was kind of nervous. He insisted that we needed two coats of paint- because of this we ended up purchasing over $500 worth of paint, and only used half of it- the second coat was totally unnecessary. Now we're stuck with seven gallons of gray paint that we don't need. We're chalking this up to our mistake- we should have known we didn't need a second coat. Just be sure to talk to the owner, or the guy with the longer hair. They're experts, and will steer you in the right direction read more

So nice, so helpful. I am in the process of slowly,very slowly, renovating my condo. Every time I have asked for help or advice on something the guys at Thybony have been patient, informative and very helpful. Their selection of paint is huge and it looks like they only carry high quality items. When I asked about environmentally sound paint strippers the salesperson went over all of them with me, their directions, their composition and how to best pick one as well as urging me to test my old, paint layered walls for lead. I bought some paint there the other day and one of the colors turned out to be not very nice on our walls. I went back and they changed the color for free. They were inderstanding and seemed to just want to make me happy. I love it, why can't all businesses have such great customer service? read more

I love the fact that the guys here know what they're talking about. They've actually worked as painters/plasterers/contractors so they can give you advice and help you figure out how to do your projects. The prices here are higher than at places like Home Depot, but I think it's worth it to get the great assistance. We've used their store brand paint and it worked out very well, though they also carry a bunch of other brands including Benjamin Moore. They also offered to help us out in creating a custom stain to match our old woodwork for which I'm truly grateful because I wasn't sure how to go about doing that. I love this store for paint and wallpaper. D.D. in the wallpaper department is so easy to work with and knows her stuff. I ordered a sample and got it within the week. As for the paint part of the store the guys are extremely knowledgeable about their different brands of paint. I've leaned on them for their expertise and they have never failed me. Let's not forget their back office staff they are very easy to work with and will go over your account line by line if needed. I hate big stores, I find their staff never works in the department that you have your problem in. My husband and I had our apartment painted by a great painter, but the color in one of our rooms was off. While the painter didn't buy from Thybony, my husband and I went there out of our convenience to check what the color should have actually been. Even though the paint for our place was purchased some where else and the color mistake made wasn't their fault, they still gave us a tester pint of paint for free to make sure we had what we needed. Thybony was recommended to me when I was looking for wall coverings. I'm not a designer but can at least coordinate colors and do appreciate input/suggestions from experts to help confirm my ideas. When I arrived at Thybony, I asked where I could find books of samples and was directed to Kevin. I brought samples of our curtains, tile, and mantle color that so I could choose a wall covering to match appropriately. When I approached Kevin's desk I stated that I needed some help choosing wall coverings and he pointed to a table on the other side of the room; he told me to take a seat. He proceeded to dump 6-8 books of samples on the desk and then left me there to search through the books. Kevin told me to tag ones I liked and we could order samples if needed before making a final decision. When I asked his opinion on the few I had selected I didn't get any input other than "it's personal preference." I just wanted some guidance or suggestions from one of their so-called expert designers and was disappointed. He also made it a point to say that with what I was trying to do with the wall covering was very expensive and possibly buying a $30 can of paint might just be the way to go. I needed clarification on the amount of wall covering needed as well and he addressed me as if I couldn't do math. My time at Thybony clearly wasn't going well and nor productive since the home project is on a tight time frame. Since Kevin visibly wasn't interested in helping make the sale that day, I asked to order (3) samples and my hope would be that once I made a decision I might be able to work with someone else. He said that samples would arrive within a week and then ordering the product could be another week after that. Well, it's now been 16 days since my visit to Thybony and still no samples. I have left 2 voicemails and Kevin returned one of the calls to say that by a week it was actually 7-10 days to receive samples...either way, I still don't have them and am now in a time crunch where I won't be able to get the product to our contractor in time for our project. The interior designer helping me with another home project has come to the rescue with finding samples elsewhere that will be shipped overnight and product shipment expedited to keep the rest of our project on track. Thybony will not be getting my business nor should they get yours if you're looking for wall coverings. The people who help with paint may offer a completely different experience of which I can't comment. I should also mention that I was charged $2/sample and don't even care enough to get my money back after all of this hassle...definitely won't be back read more

As a customer with Thybony Paint in Andersonville for over 25 years, I have to say I was extremely disappointed when I went there yesterday (3/5/13). I arrived at 8:10am, being the only customer in the store at that time. I went to the counter and was greeted by "RSD" (clerk's initials on my receipt). I asked to see a paint chip of a color I saw in a magazine (Celery Salt/Benjamin Moore). After finding the paint chip on the paint wheel, the clerk told me there were two by that name with different numbers, but they were the same color. I then asked to show me where the paint chip was located on the sample wall of paint chips and he took me over there, found the paint chip in one of the numbers, but when I asked about the second number he referenced at the counter, he said "I don't have all day for this." I ignored the comment and he couldn't find the other chip. I went back to the counter and asked for two gallons of the Regal Matte paint for this color. He promptly told me, "We only have one gallon in the Regal Matte finish but that paint is being fazed out by the end of this year and the new matte paint is the Regal Select Matte which is only $4.00 more per gallon and a much better paint." I went with the new paint which is listed on the shelf at $50.99, but I have a contractor discount so I asked how much with my discount. He replied, "Well the more you buy the more discount, it's really not much difference in price." I once again asked, "Well how much difference?" He rang the paint up without answering and I ended up paying $49.99/gallon so I only supposedly saved $1.00 per gallon. I came home and called Ambassador Paint on north Lincoln and was told I could also get a contractor discount (for any customer!) and the same paint would be $39.99/gallon! A $10.00 per gallon savings for the EXACT same paint! I went over in person to buy some other things and the owner/clerk was extremely polite (what I used to experience at Thybony over the years) and confirmed the price once again. So if you want superior customer service, save $10.00 per gallon of paint, and not have rude comments made to you as a customer, I strongly advise anyone to save a lot of money and go to Ambassador Paint, versus the Thybony service and pricing in Andersonville!
