Fantastic experience at A Lamp & Fixture. I was lucky enough to come across a gorgeous vintage light fixture, and I had NO idea if it even worked. To say the least, one persons trash was certainly my treasure! I brought it straight to A Lamp & Fixture. The store is marvelous, and packed full of beautiful, vintage light fixtures. In fact, the guy I worked with mentioned that's what they're most known for. He was kind enough to take a look at the lamp I brought in and was professional and nice the entire time. He was able to get it all up and running and advised me on what lightbulbs to get for it. He only had to replace a couple of plastic parts, and only charged me $10! I was worried the whole thing would need to be re-wired, but I got really lucky and it just happened to work. Highly recommend if you have any light fixtures or questions about them, you stop by A Lamp & Fixture. I'm confident the experts here would be able to help or advise on anything related to lighting! read more

They are great. Great service and knowledge. Have brought in repairs a few and always a positive experience. You can trust the folks here. read more

Very good communication, pleasant to work with, fair, done quickly. What's not to like?

Highly recommended! We have have vintage lamps rewired in the past and have always been more than satisfied with the work. This is our first experience with recovering shades for our Pottery Barn wall sconces. The frames were unique and very sturdy, so it made sense to recover them. What beautiful work they did! The shades are even better than they were when new and done at a fair price. read more

Cory is great! As are the rest of the people working at A lamp. I brought my lamp in today, turned out I just had a loose contact in the bulb housing. Cory figured it out and had me on my way. I have purchased very nice custom black and white shades here in the past. The service and products are top notch. I've used various shades from A lamp and had vintage sconces repaired here as well. All for design projects in Chicago. The clients and I have been very happy every time. They have a great selection of lamp shades and custom light fixtures. Stop in if you are sourcing some lighting or need shades and or lamp repairs. Thank you very much and nice to see you today, Cory! Cheers read more

I had a couple lamps from Spain that had cheap European plugs that broke just a few months after bringing home. I had a hard time figuring out how to get them fixed but through google search found this place, which was just the right place! They have quick service (in the day when I came), repairing and converting to American plugs on the spot, and replaced a switch as well that wasn't working, for a reasonable price. They have a nice supply of old and basic lamps for purchase as well, fun to browse. Ample parking on the street outside or their parking lot in the back. Nice people and good service! read more

What an amazing business and nice people. I (now) see why they've been in business for almost half a decade. I first contacted them 2/24 to inquire about replacing a socket on a vintage lamp. Even though I called after hours, the guy (I believe the owner) was nice and told me to email a picture. (Sidenote: I was getting the lamp repaired b/c another lamp of mine (my FAVORITE lamp and a family heirloom from my Grammy was broken during a move. .) It was a gorgeous, quartite creative corp lamp from 1961. I was t able to get the ceramic pieces reassembled, so I had to go to my next best option -- my 2nd lamp (the lamp I got fixed.) Fast forward, last week, I dropped the lamp off. Of note -- I had my doggie with me and he was a bit hyper (he's only 3. ‍), but the employees were gracious about me having him there when I dropped off the lamp. Now -- to the meat of the review. When o dropped the lamp off -- they told me it also needed to be rewired and something about a new wing. I wasn't quite expecting those repairs b/c the lamp was working up until the plug came off. In any case, I was desperate to replace the other broken lamp from my Grammy, so I just sucked it up and agreed to all the repairs they suggested. The approximate total was $60. That isn't a bad thing total, but I'm out of work at the moment. Once I got home, I realized I was really pushing it by spending $60 right now to fix an old lamp (even though it had sentimental value.) I emailed "A Lanp & Light Fixture" and asked which of the suggested repairs we could do w/out b/c $60 was a stretch for me right now. (Full disclosure: I'd initially thought they "upsold" me on repairs.) To my surprise -- they responded to my email and were very gracious. They were empathetic and also said the lamp was ready --- and there would be NO charge! Me: what!?! I didn't mind paying and was prepared to pay. Just not $60. I went to get my lamp today and they honored their word. I'm very touched by their great customer service and kindness. Would recommend them in a heartbeat. Thank read more

Not only did we get a new shade and TWO lamps fixed but we got stellar advice from the elder Manager. We drove in (we don't know of any other places that fix lamps) on a Sat morning with a gorgeous tiffany style lamp that was very heavy, and a small cheap lamp with a broken shade and in need of a harp. (I had NO idea lamp parts were called harps.) Our cord on the lamp was busted and the inner bulb was out. Apparently we had a kitty calming diffuser plugged into the same outlet as the Tiffany lamp. The heat had made the cord was rock hard, and he said we could have had a FIRE! He was serious but not outraged, as I should have been. He replaced the cord and other parts. We looked around and found a cute small sand-colored shade for the small lamp. We were out in 30 or so min, as we came early in the day. He was good about sharing the cost between 2 cards. The old pink/yellow carbon copy receipt was a nice touch. (Millennials, go ask your parent/guardian what those are!) read more

A Lamp & Fixture - Lighting Fixtures & Equipment Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

This shop was recommended to me by my electrician and a second choice for possibly finding help with a few pendants I am trying to have hung. I went in and asked if they sold cable for lighting and the woman at the counter was dismissive and incredibly rude before I even got my question out, saying they aren't in the parts business and couldn't help. She showed me the cords they have for repairs and, seeing exactly what I needed, I simply asked if they might be willing to sell some of it to me (truly in a rush so happy to pay whatever they wanted). She rolled her eyes and looked at me with cold eyes, like she couldn't fathom the idea. A simple, polite no fitting of someone at the counter of a store who surely wants business would have sufficed. She mustered a "I can ask. How much do you need?" and when I said about 12' she said "pff, good luck" and walked off to half ask the two men begins the counter. I never write reviews but this was such a stunning interaction I felt compelled. Hope she can get a bit of counseling in service and they can learn from this. read more

I called this business and was advised on the phone to bring in my lamp and see if they could help me with a part needed. After seeing the reviews I was hopeful about professionalism and customer service. Unfortunately this was not my experience. My questions were dismissed. I was insulted for my lack of knowledge on the subject. I decided to bring my business elsewhere. read more

They have sold shades to me. They have re-covered shades for me. They have built a pendant lamp for me. Now they're taking a chandelier that I bought in 1980 and essentially re-building it. I'm confident that I will feel that I have my 1980 lamp back again. I have had a totally positive experience dealing with them every time. read more

These guys are great. They can do anything. Cute vintage lamps and a large selection of shades too.

Was referred to A Lamp & Fixture by Room & Board , where I had purchased Artemide "Tizio" lamps a few years back. (R & B doesnt service electrical , hence the referral.) A bulb burned out, so I purchased a 50 watt / 12 volt/ GY6 replacement bulb on Amazon. Even YouTube vids couldn't trouble shoot why the new bulb wouldn't seat itself in the fixture. Self-image deflated, I took the lamp over to the shop (unable to screw in a light bulb so to speak. ) Apparently, I'm not the first Tizio owner to have the problem. The repair guy explained what he was doing as he replaced the bulb. He was spot-on, straight-shooting, and provided friendly ,customer service. I'll will be referring this place to anyone needing lamp repair. Great experience . read more

Six stars, if I could? Seven? I've been going here for years and I recommend it to everyone! It's the kind of place that offers good, "old fashioned" service that we absolutely need more of! They're knowledgeable! They know what they're doing!! If they can fix it, ie if it's fixable, they'll tell you! And, if they can't fix it, they will explain why. They're ethical! They will do what needs to be done and charge a fair price. And they can recycle metal if you need to say farewell to that lamp your mom gave you. All's well that ends well at this place! Even if there are problems you will still get the best possible outcome. Thank you to A Lamps. Cheers cheers cheers read more

This is a WONDERFUL store! The people are kind on the phone and very accommodating. I needed a new switch for my floor lamp, brought it in, and a very nice man said he'd fix it on the spot. In 15 minutes my lamp was ready. The cost was cheap, especially compared to another place I'd tried in the western suburbs. The people here are skilled and provide excellent service at a reasonable cost--the best lamp repair for miles around! read more

Most friendly owners we've met yet here in Chicago. Fixed our lamp while we were there and great price. Highly recommend A Lamp to anyone.

My dog chewed through my floor lamp cord (unplugged!). I emailed my situation and brought my lamp in a few days later. The owner, I believe, took one look and said, that's an easy fix, I can do it right now. As a small business, they prefer cash, so I went to get cash and the cord was fixed by the time I got back and it was WAY less expense than I anticipated. read more

A Lamp & Fixture - perfect ceiling fixture for my 1920s bungalow - Lighting Fixtures & Equipment Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Pricey, but excellent work. Took in 3 silk lamp shades from the 1920s, whose silk needed replacement, and ribs needed de- rusting. I was also missing one lamp harp (during a move) from a beautiful antique lamp, and couldn't find the pre- China assembly of harps... until A Lamp Fixture shop. He had a table FULL of antique Americana lamp harps and finials. He matched the 9" harp size I needed, and it was identical to the one I have on the matching lamp that pairs with this one. Lastly, I also got specific bulbs that were needed for old, antiqued lamps... at no charge. Phenomenal service. Absolutely old school shop, with all the knowledge and skills to repair and beautify antique lamps and lamp touches. $500 for 3 lamp shades to be re- covered with silk. read more

It's like Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, but everything related to lamps! It's been years since I've stopped by A Lamp & Fixture. I was first introduced to the shop when I worked in high-end residential interior design, and after that I had them convert a Pottery Barn corded swing arm lamp to a hard-wired contraption for my bathroom. Coming back was a pleasure, and even though they moved from their original location, this place felt like they picked it up, just as it was, and moved it over and dropped it right back into place again. I discovered the same fabulously cluttered work area where millions of creative projects were taking place. There is an area filled with loads of stacked lamp shades, a fix-it counter, and customer service that is so friendly they make lamp fixing fun! I swear there are no two lamps the same in here. The shop is packed full of mid-century and deco style lamps with a twist...among other kooky crazy styles. Want a lamp? Need a lamp fixed? Just want to browse the ginormous collection of shades? This is your place! read more

It is getting harder and harder to find places that do quality repair work, and I am so glad I found this place! I usually buy vintage lamps, which means they either need re-wiring, new shades, new switches, etc. I managed to score a pair of stunning alabaster lamps from the 1950's for an embarrassingly low price, but they needed shades and rewiring. This shop not only had the repair done in a week, they also whipped out the exact style of shade I had been imagining on the first try! Awesome. Very, very pleased. Will absolutely be giving them more work in the future! read more

Walked in with my vintage lamp that wouldn't turn on. Brought in a lamp for repair and found the desk staffed by an angry hostile man who did not fix the lamp and made me uncomfortable enough I picked the item up and politely told him I would go seek help elsewhere. in response, he grabbed my lamp and shouted that he had been doing this work for 50 years and that I needed to "be quiet and listen to him". Don't let the unassuming store front fool you. This place rocks! I went in today with a broken switch on my beloved Jonathan Adler giraffe lamp. Expecting to wait days, at minimum, for the return of my lamp - I stored the lampshade on a high shelf at home for safe keeping. Well, that wasn't necessary. Not only were they able to diagnose what was wrong with my lamp in about 2 seconds, the gentleman who assisted me asked if I had a couple of minutes to wait while he took care of it right on the spot. It took less than 5 minutes. I am beyond impressed. The customer service was amazing. All three employees (I suspect an owner may have been among them) were friendly and talkative. The store was clean and welcoming and they even welcome fur beasts as witnessed by the dog bones that were present. And the price was reasonable. That being said, I wouldn't take a cheap crap Target lamp here (unless you truly love the piece) because you can replace a Target lamp for cheaper than what you would pay for a repair here. And that is perfectly reasonable -- it's a great skilled service, and these people need to make a living. I highly recommend this place and will most definitely be back with the lamp's twin as I suspect the switch is about to go on that one as well. read more

Rude and dismissive. Needed a simple cord replacement. Would not give a quote over the phone and had a very bad attitude. Drove the 30 minutes it took to bring it in and the quote cost 2x as much as the lamp. read more

I took a modern imported lamp in for a switch repair. They said it might take a week to get the parts. At the same time, I took in a rare antique "motion" lamp for rewiring and to see if they could fix the old motor. I was told they'd see what they could do. The next day, I received a call. Both were done! They found parts on hand for the imported lamp, and, easily rewired and repaired the motor on the antique. Pricey? Maybe. But, you get what you pay for. Fast, reliable service from a very nice staff. My compliments. read more

I have twice been impressed with this store. The first time, I had an old brass lamp that needed a new shade. It was an odd size, etc and I'd tried all the big-brand mid-price furnishing places. No one had anything that worked. These guys had me fixed up and ready to use my lamp in 5 min. Really. Since I wasted so much time the first go around, the second time I needed lamp help I went straight to Lamp & Fixture. I'd found a beautiful piece of art deco glass and wanted to hang it. The original fixture that it had fit on was long gone. I walked into Lamp & Fixture and explained my problem. They presented me with two custom options within 5 minutes. Easy as pie. If you don't live nearby, you may think it's not worth it to go so far out of your way while running errands--but you're wrong. read more

What a wonderful little store, old school lamp repair, selling many shades and a decent selection of different kinds of vintage lamps. Not many contemporary lamps though. I brought in a favorite lamp w/a broken switch (just kept twirling and twirling) and the owner took a look, pulled out a mayonnaise jar of switches, grabbed one and replaced my switch with it. Fixed. No charge. So nice! Didn't rate it 5 stars only because I wish they had a bigger selection of lamps. Note: They have a tiny parking lot only accessible from Belmont, which is where their entrance is, even though the address is an Elston Ave. one. read more

I have a pair of vintage art nouveau 3 Graces lamps which needed rewiring and new bulb holders. Took them in expecting to have to come back in a few weeks. I brought 2 lamps here today. Embarrassingly, they have been sitting in my place broken and unused for over 2 years. I love these lamps and wasn't ready to part with them. I brought them in to see if they could be saved. They knew what the problem was right away and fixed both of them in under 10 minutes! It was a little pricey but well worth it. They even carried the lamps out to my car for me! I will be giving them all my future business read more

What makes for a "5"? They've got what you need or want, and they're the first, maybe only place you think off. That's how I feel about A Lamp and Fixture Shoppe (ALS). I've patronized ALS since I bought my place in Avondale 1991 - I've purchase most of my ceiling fixtures from them, I've had six or seven desk lamps repaired by them, and I've purchased lamps from them. At this point I don't bother to go anywhere else. I give them an unqualified "5". ALS's specialty is antique and reproduction indoor electric lighting (ceiling fixtures, wall sconces, desk lamps, floor lamps, and shades). There are several hundred on display, the great majority dating to the first half of the 20th century. Some are one-of-kind; some turn up regularly; others are still in production. ALS is a "lamp shop", not an "antique store", and it's reflected in price. You'll pay a reasonable price for quality merchandise. You won't have to pay a premium for lamps that match your molding. If your building pre-dates World War 2, and you want period appropriate fixtures, A Lamp Shoppe is hands-down the first place you should go. ALS also repairs lamps; they have a large on-site stock of spare and replacement parts and can fix and clean up anything you might bring in. They replace cracked or frayed wire, attach new wall plugs, or rebuild old lamps from top down. They've done simple repairs while I wait. I've never had a problem with anything they've worked on. Before you toss out a broken lamp, bring it to them. I've patronized A Lampe Shoppe for twenty years and had maybe two dozen interactions with them. There's never been any variation in quality or service; I've always come away satisfied. I recommend them without hesitation. PS: It only looks like you'll have to park 2 blocks away, there a lot in back. Just take the alley. read more

Let me start by saying that this place seemed great. The lady who helped me was very nice! I am upset and feel that I was missed lead on the timing of my shade coming in. I had a baby's room to finish. I let her know I needed it by the end of September. She said it would take 5 weeks. I ordered the $170 shade on the 20th of August! I have now been informed she didn't order my shade that day they ordered it a week later. If I am spending that kind of money I expect to get my product on time. Don't tell me after you have a no return policy that it won't be here till the 8th of oct at the earliest. Would not use them again. read more
