I truly wish I had nicer things to say. Crest has been a Chicago staple and when I finally was ready to upgrade my lighting again I went back to the place that had been tried and true for me years ago. But it seems that era has ended. I came in a hot mess, I have no design skills. I relied on the sales person to help me and I thought she was amazing. She was kind, patient and seemed to really get me and my condo style - benig "vintage" and wanting to modernize was beyond me. She was super helpful and made me feel like she knew exactly what I needed. That was until I left the showroom. I ordered two ceiling fans from her that day, it wasn't cheap. I also ordered one I'd found on my own online. I hired someone reputable to install them for me and I was all set. But then they left and within days the two I purchased from Crest (different manufacturers) were both on the fritz. Hard to believe for sure, but both manufacturers agreed this was a fluke and they both had inherent issues requiring replacement. And then I had to replace them, which meant I had to pay for the labor again. One of the fixtures is in a room I hadn't needed the fan for in the first year. But then I did, and it didn't work. At that same time I noticed the on/off switch wasn't working properly either. I called the manufacturer and they agreed it was a warranty claim and to call Crest to replace the wall switch. Not something I feel comfortable doing on my own. When I talked to Crest, they said they'd order me a part and well... they did but never called to tell me it had come in. I called on my own three weeks later and they said it was there waiting for me. I verified I could wait for the weekend to get it. Of course they are closed on Sundays so It had to be during the short Saturday hours. I raced to get there in the window only to find a lot of confusion. It wasn't waiting for me at all. The woman who said she'd call me was there and surprised I was asking questions. She said she hadn't heard back from the manufacturer to answer my question about paying for labor, and they all just threw their hands up and said they couldn't help me because the manager wasn't there. Let's just say it's the end of an era and I won't be back for business in the future. Good luck with your purchases after you leave the store. read more

I've just had the most fantastic experience with this store. They deal with large orders and builders and electricians, firstly, but Lisa was able to help me to get ONE missing part for a light fixture that I'd purchased online and not even at Crest!!!! She searched through the manufacturers books, found the item number and ordered $3.71 worth of parts for me ( far less than I imagine their typical orders are!!!) and was super helpful in general!!! I've been a Crest customer for many, many years, and they consistently impress me with their quality, selection, and service. I stopped in last week to finally update some light fixtures that were long overdue. I had pre-selected several options, and when I showed them to Kira, she provided just the right amount of helpful guidance and expertise to make my decision easy. Super friendly too. I had a few outstanding questions about the fixture details and left the store to take care of some other errands. Twice I've put hope in Crest, and twice I've been let down. My first experience was in ordering a rather rare bulb. I called and while they didn't have it in stock, another of their locations did. They would have it brought over and available for me the next day by 2pm. I was pleased. I showed up that next afternoon to buy the bulb. No dice. Pretty frustrating, especially considering the time it had taken me to get there. Apparently, the order was technically never placed in their computer system, they informed me. I briefly looked around the showroom to see if they had something else I wanted. When I asked how to turn a certain set of lamps on, the sales person didn't know. Another employee came to assist, but their body language and tone of voice suggested it was a nuisance. Reluctantly, I decided to give Crest a second shot a week or two later. After all, they were mentioned to me by several hardware store folks and I figured they might the only game in town as far as meeting serious and wide-ranging lighting and electrical needs in one place (I just moved to town and am sprucing up a very nice but very unique apartment space). I ran the last half mile to Crest to get there before closing time, and thankfully made it in time. All I needed was to place (again) my order for the bulb, and ask one question about a fixture in my home. Again, no deal - because Crest Lighting closes shop at whatever time suits them, posted store hours be darned. If this had been the only issue, I would've easily written it off, but it wasn't. I'm done with Crest lighting. I don't care if they have a legacy of service and they are allegedly a full-service lighting and electrical shop, etc. They had two chances to serve this would-be customer, and I'm not going to gamble my time or patience by giving them a third. read more

My husband and I stopped in here on a Saturday. It is almost overwhelming how many different options they have and I wasn't really sure what my style was or what I was looking for. Then we met Kira. She had a lot of patience with me and helped me go through their entire website until I was able to narrow it down to the top 5 of which we ended up buying two. She has a great eye for design and I was impressed with her ability to listen to my babbling and pick out things that would look good in our condo. I will never return. Purchased a very expensive lighting set and they recommended their recommended installer for me. He came and installed them and within one week the lights began to fail - I called the installer back numerous times and he never returned any calls. Then I called Crest and they never returned any calls. Finally I went into Crest and the manager told me don't worry I'll have the guy call you tomorrow and we'll get this fixed - that was 5 days ago, no call, nothing. Went back to Crest and got the same run-around. Bottom line - horrific customer service - they may abandon you at any sign of trouble just like they did to me. read more

Every time I walk in the store there's nobody available to help. Not that it's that busy there's only two or three sales people but they're always tied up nobody makes eye contact or even greets you. I've walked out so many times and today is another time. Also their guest parking lot never has a parking spot there's like 30 spaces three people in the store but there's never a spot in the lot. read more

This place is serious lighting business. I stopped in for a replacement bulb for a desk lamp but was taken back by the huge selection of unique lighting fixtures, lamps, wall sconces, ceiling fans, etc. The place was very busy on a late Thursday morning with a lot of contractor types and regular people in general getting items repaired and making purchases. If I were to build a place, this would definitely be on my short list of places for lighting and fixtures. Parking lot was a bonus but some jackie in a Mercedes parked so damn close to me I had to wait until a delivery truck moved so I could get out of my spot. read more

In the beginning - I couldn't be more thrilled with the service and selection at Crest. After a few bad experiences with a few other lighting companies (see my other reviews), we stopped here and worked with Christin to re-light our entire condo. Christin even came out to our condo to make sure our designer had everything on the design that we needed. During the order / quote process, Christin matched any prices I would find on the web or with any other competitors. We went back and forth a few times, and in the end, I was happy with our purchases. However - that's when my review had to be amended. It turns out that what was ordered for our living room / dining room was not correct. Given our concrete ceilings (which was well known to Crest), a two circuit monorail was 'supposedly' needed - not the single monorail. My contractor even expressed his concerns about the single monorail during the pickup, but was told (on two different occasions by 2 different people in the store) that it would work. Lo and behold - it didn't. Which was fine - I wasn't annoyed that Crest made an error in the ordering. What annoyed me was that it took over a week for Crest to reorder the two circuit monorail. Not only was my contractor calling / emailing / stopping by on a daily basis, I, too, was calling. Christin and James (another Crest employee) just were not returning calls or fixing the error. And finally, when James sent the invoice - I started going through it and found errors (ordering the wrong length - or too many parts, etc.). It wasn't until the third rendition of the invoice that we were able to place the order. Attention to detail and communication they were both lacking. And with this reorder - I should have been owed a refund. According to my first phone call with Alisa at Crest, "it's a wash" between what we returned and what we ordered. No - actually, it's $70 that I was owed. $70 is $70 and I wanted the money refunded. But three phones and several emails later - Alisa would never call me back. Yet another employee who did not believe in communication. More problems arose two weeks later when it was determined that the new two circuit rail that was ordered was the problem. The circuit wouldn't align and therefore lights came on and off intermittently. When my contractor brought it back to Crest, their staff electrician couldn't figure out what the problem was. Two weeks later, the manufacturer (LBL) came into Crest and was able to get the lights working, but there was zero correspondence with us. We spent a good part of two weeks in the store trying to get answers. Their communication is awful and they never return phone calls. I know nothing about monorails and all the different components that go with them so I was relying on Crest to help me on this. Given their location in the city - I would think that many of their customers who do monorails live in condos with concrete ceilings and that they should know the parts they need to order. I was trusting them to order the correct parts and then follow through when the error was made. Again - I was fine that they ordered the wrong circuit with the monorail (given how many parts come with one), but what I wasn't fine with was how long it took them to rectify the problem. We have since gone into Crest and gotten a full refund for our lights (though that, too, took an additional two weeks of working with Bob - who would not return calls and process a refund on lights that had been returned to their store weeks before). I cannot begin to describe how frustrating it was to deal with the company and their lack of communication. Had they just communicated with us about the problems, maybe we would have continued working with them. In the end - it worked out for the best, however. We have since returned to Lightology and got a much better design for almost $2000 less. It turns out that Crest was trying to sell us a more expensive and clunky lighting scheme. Working with Lightology proved to us that the people at Crest Lighting just did not have the skills or knowledge about lighting. read more

I recently stopped into Crest Lighting to get a longer cord for a light fixture to go above my dining table. The guys at the counter were helpful, got me the 13ft of cord that I needed...and the cashier got me out of there in a jiffy. After looking at multiple places for this cord - they had it, so a good resource for things not so common. 4 thumbs up! read more

Crest is an excellent store for purchasing one's home lighting. I believe they have design staff, but they also have people who can help you if you're doing the very unexciting shopping that we were doing (fluorescent for the basement -- woohoo!). The staff member that we worked with was so, so good. He didn't jump on us as soon as we we walked in, but he was able to answer our questions immediately as soon as we had them. He could direct us to places on the floor to look at things while he looked up other information to help us have a better informed search. He worked for us and he did it with a very pleasant attitude. Besides terrific sales people, their selection is very big and while it is pricier than, say Home Depot or Lowes, it is probably on par with HD's Expo, but their lights are much higher quality. They have some less expensive items as well: their stock runs the gamut from hand-blown Murano glass to cheapo plastic sockets. I could go on and on, but all I will end with is: after we placed our order, someone in their stocking area quickly filled it. The salesman and the stock guy both helped us load our car and we were on our way. It was quick and easy. NB: If you are working with a contractor or electrician, they may have an account with Crest. If so, make sure to use their name so you can get the contractors' discount on your stuff!! Oh, and they have parking! read more

I walked into a store with no other patrons and wasn't acknowledged by anyone. Not a hi or anything. It was really weird and awkward. Then one lady finally said "do you need help?" I told her what I was there for, and she said "ok well that's like all around here so just look around". I don't know if I expect too much when I walk into a place, but this is the kind of place I would've expected for someone to come up to me right away and see how they can help, what ideas they could give me, lighting tips etc. I'm obviously in a lighting store bc I need lighting. Not just for fun. I wanted to buy something but it just was a terrible customer service experience to when she finally asked again if I needed help, I said no and walked out. read more

I recently purchased replacement light bulbs at Crest and had a very pleasant experience. I went first to Home Depot, but since the bulbs were unique, HD did not stock them. The HD sales assistant pointed me to Crest. I stopped by Crest the next day and the salesman was very helpful. Extremely knowledgable. He was able to find the replacement bulbs relatively quickly and at what I consider a reasonable price. Installed them today and they work fine. I would recommend this store to anyone who is having difficulty finding replacement bulbs for any of their specialty lights. read more

Spent 2 days at this location trying to hammer out a lot of details for a big project that I have no clue on how to proceed forward with. Thankfully I was helped by Lynn. I working in sales understand the time and energy it takes to make everything *perfect* and the appropriate customer service skills needed to accompany such a task. Bright. Enthusiastic. Charming. Helpful. Authentic. Never made me feel rushed or feel as I *had* to go a certain direction. Very knowledgeable, informative and I genuinely felt she had my best interest's in mind. First time shopper, can't say I'll be in the market for lights any time soon or all too often but it will definitely be back with Lynn. The service at this place is nonexistent. After ordering expensive lights, I was given a two week lead time. When up, I called for status and was told to call back and they would have an answer. I thought that was weird, but did as asked. 5 days later, they did not have an answer, but did admit they had a credit problem,with their supplier. I insisted they find out status and call me back. It never happened. On my third call, I insisted on the manager, who also promised to call me back the next morning. On my fourth call over two weeks, I cancelled my order. The manager did not even flinch. It was like he was used to this. I don't know how they can survive as an upscale place, when their top people provide an example of extremely poor service. Don't go here, unless you want to be treated poorly. read more

Rather disappointing given the selection and the know-how of several people that work there. I went here for the first time last fall for some replacement bulbs that I knew Home Depot, etc didn't carry. No one acknowledged me for awhile, even as I stood in front of them. The second time was during a big install project in my home. One of the reps helped me out a lot and worked with my contractor a fair amount. However, once the project was started and the walls were opened up, it turns out that my lighting choice was not going to work after all. I called Crest Lighting to cancel my order and pay a restocking fee. I got a 'disgruntled' call a day later. The person didn't even ask for me by name when he called me and when I confirmed that I wanted to cancel the order he hung up on me. I understand that it was a lost sale of about $900 but that's what happens in business. He didn't need to hang up on me. Surely there are other lighting options in Chicago. read more

I spent roughly 45 minutes here and was never once acknowledged by the staff. It was a couple of hours before they closed and there were only a few other customers there. Two younger girls and an older man sat at their desk nearly the entire time I was there. This store has one of the best selections out of several lighting stores I visited, and has great deals, but I left without purchasing anything because no one helped me. read more

My husband and I have a very odd length lightbulb providing under lighting in our bathroom. After 4 years, it burnt out as we were listing our condo for sale. Awesome. We looked everywhere for the stupid light, and of course the text on the bulb was written in hieroglyphics. We took it to Crest Lighting and they were able to order us a replacement bulb. When it came in, we checked it against our existing bulb and discovered they weren't the same length after all. Awesome. But the nice people at Crest knew we were in a pinch and looked around and discovered that someone else had ordered that size bulb and let us buy it since we were on a time crunch. They didn't order the right size initially, but they made it right and we couldn't have been happier!! read more

It looked like they had a good selection of stuff, but the sales staff was not at all helpful - they just tossed me a book and then proceeded ignored me. When we first walked in this place can be very overwhelming however their customer service is what made us not walk out and leave. James was so helpful and he walked through the entire showroom with us explaining each piece and how it can work in my friends space. What was even more stellar was as we looked in the books at certain things so we would not forget he made us color copies to take with us and to give to the electrician as options to use for lighting. Pricing seems to be not bad either however if you have an contractor or electrician maybe you can get them to get the items for you at their price. read more

I purchased items from Crest twice. My first experience was pretty pleasant - I need a special order light switch plate. My latest experience has been ultra painful. I needed a replacement piece of glass for a fixture. It took two months to get the piece in and then it was the wrong color!!! I would call and leave a message and no one would call me back. I've been shopping at Crest for years. I like their selection of Casablanca ceiling fans. When you arrive at the store, you need to take a number and wait for a sales person to assist. Prices are a bit higher, but the variety of products in the store makes the additional expense bearable. One complaint - they stopped servicing Casablanca fans. So now I have 6 ceiling fans with a lifetime guarantee .. but no where to take them for service! Not good. read more

I've bought many items at Crest, from high-end fixtures to hard-to-find bulbs. The service depends on the associate you get -- some are really helpful and others seem put out that you are there. But, they offer a pretty good selection and often decent clearance items can often be found. read more

When purchasing all the fixtures for an major home remodel, we went to one of those upscale, decorator lighting stores, and spent a LOT of money. But we never felt like our business really mattered to the sales associates or the store. So, for future purchases, we have been customers of Crest Lighting. I have always felt respected as a customer, even when purchasing something as simple as a light fixture for the bathroom. I am now in the process of changing our kitchen and bedroom light fixtures, and have been given some good ideas and options to consider. And, yes, they can get you pretty much what you would find in an "upscale" store...I was surprised about that...at a much more reasonable price. Yes, it's a busy place with a lot of contractor business...and sometimes there can be a wait, but there is always someone to take care of me. I usually work with Lynn...and she always takes time to answer questions, to look through catalogs with me, and to make sure there is nothing else I need. She never acts rushed, which I really appreciate. read more

My partner and I recently purchased a condo which was in dire need of new lighting. Being in the retail business myself and working for a local family owned business, we decided to go to Crest to shop for our lighting. Since Saturday's are usually nuts in retail environments, we went early right when they opened. Everyone of the sales associates greeted us as we perused the showroom. Eventually, we had made our selections, and Penny was very friendly, helpful, and efficient. Part of our purchase included an LED under cabinet lighting system for our kitchen, and she had her manager help her determine all the parts/pieces necessary for our order. Some people would think this is a red flag and that it is a sign of inexperience when a sales person requests help from a manager or coworker. We, however, thought quite the opposite. No matter what field of expertise one is in, one cannot be an expert in everything that field has to offer. I admired and respected her being upfront about needing help with the system we chose, and this immediately made me trust her even more. Our lighting came in during the time frame she had estimated. We both felt very comfortable with Crest and will definitely give them our future lighting business. read more

If you're looking to replace a bulb, stay away from this place since every simple bulb has to be "special ordered" by Crest from another source. Plus, you will have to keep calling Crest about your special order otherwise Crest will not check or expedite your order. Total lack of good customer service! I recently went to Crest looking for a couple lighting fixtures. I couldn't find anything I really liked on the floor; the person who helped me showed me several options in their catalogues and then ordered them for me. They arrived promptly one week later, just as promised. I found Crest to be an excellent shop; the customer service was also excellent. I am going there next week to ask for help finding an unusual light bulb for an overhead fan and I would be very surprised if I didn't find it there! read more

Similar to a number of reviews, we has a good initial experience (with Penny), but after our inital order was processed Penny left Crest and things deteriorated after that. Some of the issues we encountered were: - Wrong lights being delivered on subsequent orders. - Failure to respond to phone calls (physically being there seems to be the only way to get any sort of attention / customer service). - Being passed around different people (no-one seemed to want to take responsibility). We literally spend thousands of dollars at the store and are still waiting for lights that were ordered in January but have not been delivered due to screw ups. I will never shop there again. read more
