So great they are open Saturdays now because it's the only time I can get downtown. The folks who work here on Saturday are extra helpful - they spend the time you need to feel confident in your purchase. Their technical knowledge of which colors "go together" helps immensely and I've learned a lot from them...we are so lucky to have a showroom in Chicago! They called me this Tuesday morning to say that they had forwarded it to Chicago and that Chicago would call me. They did. Unlike the mopey charlatans at the hardware counter who hum a few bars to convince you of their knowledge of color choice (and the talent that requires) - the folks here have a convincing but quiet confidence about their abilities. Its collaborative and encouraging, but also there is a real skill and enthusiasm. I can tell there is passion here for design, color, and really the artistic element involved. Needless to say; the Farrow and Ball Showroom in Chicago is fantastic. The service is very attentive, pleasant, and warm. Everyone I've worked with here including Charles and Thomas have been great. A special mention to Valerie, who really epitomizes the tip of the spear with her whole demeanor. Bar none SUPER on point in every way. I am very impressed. The prompt call backs, remembering the sound of my voice on the phone - makes it feel more client-like and less transactional. A definite rhythm and flow that creates trust and brings me back for more of what is offered. Absolutely! Lastly, Farrow and Ball (while priced at a premium) is flat out the best paint I've seen and worked with. It's a real joy to experience and experiment with the colors and pigments offered in their lineup. Personally, I had struggled to pinpoint my personal intersection of both color and quality in a venn diagram type of fashion until Farrow and Ball. Wasting my time experimenting with Benjamin Moore's new premium century line (too flat and lacks depth), Aura Spectrum, and their traditional offerings. Along with the customary contractor paints like Glidden and Behr which comparatively are cheap, sticky, less vibrant and infused with cheap plastic fillers. Seeing the finished product in person makes an enormous impact. Overall I can't recommend this showroom and product enough. Outstanding! read more

Even at my age, I learn a lot. Like, good paint can be quite expensive. Or, people at the hotel will look at you weirdly as you walk to your room with 4 gallons. We recently purchased a 100 year old home and were looking for something that would complement our living and dining rooms. We wanted something that fit the period of our home. As there are no stores in Wisconsin, we headed to Chicago for our paint quest. In doing our research, we learned that Farrow and Ball makes paint the way they did pre WWII and it shows. It's hard to explain but the paint truly looks different than ones you would buy at a big box store. Staff are uber helpful and definitely know the product. Yes, it is expensive but the quality and the look is definitely worth it. read more

I am still in shock that this happened. I was walking through the Merchandise Mart on the phone with my little brother. I couldn't hear him very well so I stepped into Farrow & Ball so I could hear him finish the story from school he was trying to tell me. I was in the store, which was completely void of customers, for about 5 seconds when a woman came out and rudely asked me if I planned on buying anything. I told her no I was just finishing up a phone call with my little brother as I could not hear what he was saying the main promenade. She then told me that this "is not a phone booth. it is my store." Wow! I work with over 150 people about a block away. I can't wait to tell each of them my story and let them form their own opinions about the quality of service next door. This F&B location in the Mart is a convenient way to get sample pots if you don't want to wait to mail order them (or pay shipping). They also have large pieces of wood painted with each of their colors, which helps give you a much better idea of what the finished product will look like. As a result of the large pieces of painted wood, and a helpful salesperson, I ended up with a different color than I had planned to purchase. It looks FANTASTIC in my house. I subtracted one star because the store did not shake the gallon of paint that I purchased and their paint separates worse than any paint I have ever seen in my life. It took me almost an hour to stir it up enough to use. Also, their paint cans are cheap as hell and the metal was basically destroyed by the time I pried it open. I imagine this is to minimize shipping costs from the UK where the paint is made, but make sure you have a bucket to dump paint into so you can mix it, and also something to store the left-overs in. The store also stocks large pieces of their wallpapers and they will give you an 8x12 sample of any of the prints so you can take it home to test without lugging a massive book. read more

I love Farrow & Ball. When I was planning to paint my apartment, I was considering their paints for my walls. The colors and finishes are absolutely gorgeous. Of course, their paint is very expensive. If you can afford Farrow & Ball, you should consider them. Their color selection is limited, but they coordinate beautifully. The only problem I have is the service here. They are patient and helpful. However, they never responded to an e-mail I sent to them, nor were they happy when I arrived right a few minutes before they closed for an exchange. A customer services associate made a mistake in the purchase and I had to go back to the store. He seemed very annoyed. If it was inconvenient for anyone, it would be me since I had to drive back there. I later brought my boyfriend, who almost got Farrow & Ball paint for his place, but he decided on Sherwin-Williams due to limited color selection (he wanted a modern green). So disappointing. I love their colors, but I had truly one of the worst customer experiences of my life with Megan the store manager here. She was inappropriate, haughty, nasty and rude. Initially, I didn't mind the F&B premium, but after being treated with such disdain, I decided it wasn't worth it. Ended up having the F&B colors copied by our local Sherwin Williams. Fantastic customer service and I couldn't be more happy with Farrow and Ball paint. The paint is worth the price and the staff is very pleasant and knowledgable. I was painting my three story home, and had been agonizing over choices of whites and greens. Farrow and Ball undertones are a little tricky, but the showroom helped with the description of undertones moving with the light. The lovely Valerie completed a color consultancy for our home and has been a godsend. She (and the rest of her team) are helpful and always spot on. I will NEVER use Farrow and Ball again. I am not one to complain, but I believe the customer service that we received from Management and support staff at this location was one that should not go unnoticed. We reside in Michigan, therefore, the Chicago location is the closest location to our home. I spoke with Valerie, initially, regarding paint colors for the entire Interior of our home, including doors, trim, etc. I told her that we wanted flat for the ceilings and were delivered 10 gallons of ceiling paint that had an obvious sheen. I called the store immediately after our painters showed us a coat on the ceiling (they questioned it because typically people do not want a sheen on their ceilings). I was told sorry about your luck, and if i wanted to return the 9 gallons of paint they would refund them, but only if they weren't damaged (which i could deal with). Keep in mind, because we live in Michigan I paid well over a $100 to ship them back because they had to be expedited so they wouldn't "freeze" overnight. We literally shipped them back in the boxes and cases that they came to us in. We only opened one can, which I had to eat the cost on. Well, I received a call stating that only a (few) made it back undamaged and that there was nothing they could do. Keep in mind, we are talking close to a thousand in ceiling paint alone. Fast forward.....We found wallpaper to go in our foyer that would match our wall color. I spoke with Valerie (again) and told her that we would like to place an order for the paper. I had our wallpaper guy come over and do the measurements so they could be exact. I called her back with the dimensions and SHE gave me the number of rolls we would need based on the dimensions I gave her. One would assume that if you gave them the dimensions, they would be able to tell you the correct amount needed, right?!?! Well, yet again disappointment ensued. We received the wallpaper and waited to open the packages until the wallpaper installer was here to install. As soon as he opened the first box he said, oh no, they are double rolled. You guys are going to have DOUBLE the amount needed for this space. I called that day, the response I received was again....not our fault yours. Apparently, when you order wallpaper it is FINAL sale. I would be fine with that as long as FARROW and BALL hired individuals competent enough to take dimensions and correctly estimate the amount need. Now, we are sitting on over $1,500 in Wallpaper that we DO NOT want nor do we need. I spoke with the Manager, I believe Kelly? She was beyond rude to me. She offered no resolution at all, she spoke over me a number of times and was downright rude. Like I said, I am not one to complain but I firmly believe others should be warned. I have made numerous attempts to talk to anyone via the 1-888 number but no one will return my calls. I am resorting to writing a bad review on Yelp because I have attempted to resolve the issue in a respectful way, but that has not gotten me anywhere. Please, if this can help someone else from making the same mistake we did in entrusting the advice from Farrow and Ball's trained staff I have at least done something positive from the horrific experience. I have used this paint all throughout our home, except the bathrooms. We first used the paint more than 12 years ago with our hallway, kitchen, dining and living rooms. It looks like we just painted it yesterday. We have plaster walls and used the estate emulsion and it has performed perfectly. Could not be happier about the product or service we have received from Farrow and Ball. I am about to change up some of our colors, and would not consider anything other than F&B paint. I visited Farrow and Ball, Chicago to seek assistance and guidance for paint for my Chicago office. As a major business owner I appreciate a flawless customer experience. My Gold Coast office location calls for 'luxury" treatment and thus I chose F&B. The staff was most helpful...and extremely skilled in product knowledge and advice on how much paint and paper I would need. Thomas and Valerie were very helpful and Meghan the showroom manager is a true professional and is clearly in command of everything and anything a customer might need. I have visited a number of times for additional needs and the showroom can get quite busy at times. The staff is always committed to serving each customer and if they are all occupied with another quest they always apologize for the wait and do everything possible to be certain all guests receive first class treatment and attention. If you are the impatient type and feel you should be helped before others that arrived first I suggest you adjust your attitude. Finally a word of caution...beware of reviews that say "I am not one to complain"...as they are ALWAYS the first to complain. I was attracted to Farrow and Ball paint because it tends to smell less and is clay based, which I was curious about. Recently, within a month of having my dining room painted with their Estate Emulsion, I noticed a strange streaking on the walls, resembling drip marks but clearly IN the finish and not on top of it. After a thorough investigation which offered no answers, I contacted Farrow and Ball customer service and, after describing the problem and sending photos, was told it was SURFECTANT LEACHING and was sent a sheet explaining the problem. I was then told by customer service (located in Canada, I believe) that this is a problem with the ESTATE EMULSION finish in high humidity areas like bath and laundry rooms. The fax sent by Farrow and Ball Customer Service described what could happen and parallels what I was experiencing. I pointed out, however, that my dining room is not a 'high humidity area' and that the paint failed to perform as promised even though the instructions had been followed to the letter. I also pointed out that this potential KNOWN issue was not disclosed on the packaging nor by the Farrow and Ball literature or by the store that sold me the paint. Finally, after I called the local Farrow and Ball store in Chicago where I purchased the paint, I learned that the manager knew nothing of this problem and had never even heard of the condition despite the fact that F and B has a prepared fact sheet explaining the problem which they know to exist. Farrow and Ball REFUSED to replace the paint or cover the cost of repainting. Given the poor performance of the paint, the lack of customer service as well as the absence of a willingness to stand behind their product, I will never use Farrow and Ball again. There is nothing so special about this paint that warrants tolerating such poor corporate management and product quality control. The product is costly and fails to perform. There is a false belief that it is a paint used by those of wealth and taste. It is, in fact, over-priced, average paint with some strange quirks. Wise consumers will not throw their money away on the hype and will pursue quality and performance when choosing paint and will invest in a company that stands behind their product. read more
