This is a great classic hardware store, and you can certainly get all of your home improvement needs - screws, paint, wallpaper, plumbing repair, and tools. However, I go in primarily for cleaning supplies and dog supplies. They have a nice (though limited) selection of cleaning supplies, including paper products, various cleaning chemicals, laundry products, soaps, and things like Swiffers, dish towels, etc. I find it very convenient to come here for cleaning supplies rather than going to the grocery store - especially convenient if you have a car since they have free parking. I also love that they are dog friendly. My pup loves going shopping with me, and loves to follow the paw prints on the floor from the front door to the pet section. They have a selection of dog foods, treats, collars/leashes, and toys. While I've never really paid attention, I think they have things for other types of animals too. The employees also love dogs - one of the men who works there gets excited to give my pup a treat when we check out. read more

Absolutely hands down the most ignorant customer service experience. The paint department needs new employees that can better answer questions without all the sass. Each and every time I have ordered paint from this location, I have been serviced by rude employees. Like come on. You're selling paint. What's with all the attitude? This is a customer service business where the majority of customers will have questions. If you don't like being nice to people you probably should look elsewhere for employment. Needless the say I won't be back. The other JC licht store in Bridgeport has the nicest people working there. Highly recommend to anyone to go there instead. This is such a great neighborhood shop. Everyone has been helpful and kind. Yes, you may pay slightly more for something vs Amazon or a big box store, but the people and proximity to home make it a worthwhile shopping experience. This review is for the store and all of its employees, but I want to highlight one particular employee, Andrea. She always greets you with a friendly smile, stops what she's doing and asks if you need help finding anything. I'm creative so sometimes I'm looking for out of the box solutions, and she will brainstorm with me and asks questions about the projects and truly cares about helping find a solution. Even when the store didn't have what I needed, she looked up places for me that might. She goes above and beyond and is a big reason why the customer experience is amazing at this store! read more

I can't say enough about how great and helpful this place has been. Lisa and Juanita were kind and helpful in looking through wallpaper books. I also had the paint color specialist, Julie Diorio come to my house to explore different palettes of colors that would work and flow through my entire house. She has such an eye for colors and used every part of our furniture, decor, floors, cabinets, windows and lighting to pick the perfect group of colors to compliment my home through every room and hallway! Well, what have we here? If Home Depot rings "Home Headache" in your poor little heart of hearts, well...I've got somewhat of a solution for you. JC Licht: Painting Superpower located in the West Loop. Doing touch-ups? Need to paint some trim? Rollers, brushes, tape...anything you need for painting, they've got all of it, and then some. Contractors use this shop quite often as evidenced by the number of painting vans and a separate "contractor" entrance, so it's obviously the real deal. And frankly, you won't have to wait in line behind oodles of yuppies waiting for faux finish advice and seeking the finest in red accent wall paint. Ooo, mean. I'm a yuppie that just doesn't like to wait in line, so hence...I'll find other outposts...no hater paint on the walls up in here, promise! They'll still show you faux finishes and red paint, too. They even have wall coverings. If wallpaper is your thing, well...check it out. *Private parking lot *Benjamin Moore paint selections *Very helpful and friendly staff - even if you are just stopping in for a gallon and wearing a dress. *OPEN at 6am!? WOWZA. I purchased one gallon of "Aura" paint (matte gray) to redo my beloved's hideously "shiny cranberry" master bathroom. I must say that I have had the best experience with this company at this particular location. More than the several others that I have visited. Good selection, kind and helpful staff. They are fast to mix paint and I feel confident that it will be mixed correctly. 2 negatives. One is that they are pricey. The second, and biggest negative I have found. They seem to have a mix of very knowledgeable staff, combined with many folks with limited knowledge. Nice people, but limited knowledge. So, when asking for help or product advice, be careful who you ask and sort of size them up to gage which you are dealing with. Are they confident and clearly very knowledgeable about paint or do they know just a little but try to make you think they are experienced. I have consistently found both at several of Licht locations. I think it is ok to hire good people at different levels of experience. Just make sure that you instruct your staff how to handle things if they have a customer asking something beyond their scope. I would much rather someone be honest and simply hook me up ....directly...with the employee who can help me. Make sense? .......I mean, are these guys on commission ?? read more

I wish it were possible to give 10 stars. This JC Licht store is my favorite place in Chicago. Not paint store. Favorite store...period. I've done several reno projects over the past year, and the entire staff has been super helpful in selecting the right paint colors, creating custom colors, wallpaper tips...you name it, they know it. Louie is the the most patient mixmaster ever! He's created colors that most times exist only in my wild imagination. I'm always greeted like a member of the team whenever I visit the store. And the love affair between Lee and my pooch Allie is one for the ages. She'd honestly Uber herself there at least once a week to see him if she could. read more

I came in here to procure paint samples because the house painter I hired only used Benjamin Moore paints. I found the colors that I wanted, picked out a brush, and paid - the pint-sized cans are more expensive at J.C. Licht than at Home Depot, but only by a few dollars (the price is the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5). It was a pretty straightforward, non-exciting transaction. While I was waiting for them to mix my paint samples, a customer who had just picked up a gallon of paint tripped, dropped the can, and the paint spilled all over the place. It seemed like everyone who was working in the showroom dropped what they were doing to deal with the spill - they made sure the customer was okay (her ego was bruised), then one guy rolled up the carpets and removed them, several others wiped up the paint, and another guy mixed a new can for her without charge. The customer was very embarrassed, but they really could not have been nicer about the whole thing. The incident delayed my exit from the store by a few minutes, but I was impressed that no one acted angry or resentful about the mess. read more

The people at JC Licht were very helpful and wouldn't let me leave the store with the wrong supplies. They even recommended a cheaper can of paint that would do the job!! If only their expertise could have followed me home...I did an OK job, but couldn't have done it at all without all the help I was given! I've lived in the west loop since 2005. I got my window treatments through JC Licht's when I initially moved in in 2005. I went with Hunter Douglas Designer shades. JC Licht's was great back in 05. Fast forward to 2014, I needed help repairing one of my shades. I called JC Lichts and their customer service was still great! They were happy to help me since Hunter Douglas allegedly had a life time guarantee on their products. Jenna specifically in the Window Treatment department at JC Licht helped me. She was WONDERFUL! After months of back and forth with Hunter Douglas which also entailed sending the shade to them and working with them on the phone. Hunter Douglas was unable to help me. Their recommendation was to purchase new shades..... Jenna was able to provide another company in the city who would be able to help me (who has been GREAT as well) so this ends happily. (just a little effort to get there) Just wanted to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT to Jenna and JC Licht. I would definitely go to them for any future household projects! The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about a wide variety of products, applications and materials. Their knowledge has saved many a project. Their selection of some of the finest paints and wallpapers is truly second to none. What a welcome addition to the West Loop! Apparently this used to be just a paint store but they recently added the hardware portion. For being a convenience size I was pleasantly surprised at their selection. The staff is friendly and helpful. I'm reviewing the JC Licht that's on Clark, just north of Belmont on the west side of the street. (The Belmont L stop - red line and brown line) is around the corner.) I went in to the store to get some paint samples, and I mentioned to Parnell, the customer-service guy, that I didn't like to the way a roller adds texture to walls and was thinking of using a paintbrush for the entire living room. He was immediately concerned about my choice because of how difficult and tiring it would be for me. He went out of his way to point me to some better rollers and to demonstrate techniques for efficient use of the roller and how to get a smoother finish. I took his advice and am so glad I did! Plus, each time I go in there, the people are very friendly and helpful. A great place in the Lakeview neighborhood! read more

I love this store! I was greeted within seconds of entering and helped with my needed purchase and given an escorted tour of the new facility. I have been in the building many times when it was a brewing and plant supply store as well as the back end as a commercial paint supplier that was always kind and helpful to homeowners. I have been a big fan of J.C. Licht for many years as well as a big fan of the personal helpfulness of other True Value Hardware stores. Rude and ignorant . That's all I have to say. My father, a Spanish speaker, has an accent. The man at the register was being ignorant. He kept telling my father he didn't understand him. Once my dad wrote down the name of the person to look up for on the computer, he insisted on asking for a phone number to look up. Why? He already gave you a name. If you work in customer service, you should know the customer comes first. So if he already gave you 3 different names, look them up and do your job. Plus, he stated he didn't know what EPCO paint was. Uhm, that's what comes up when you google the place? Absurd. Not recommending this place to anyone. read more

The customer service at JC Licht has been phenemonal. We recently purchased our first home, and it has been an extremely overwhelming process as we begin to maintain and fix things in the house. We feel very fortunate that we started to shop here, because the employees have provided us with a lot of support. The paint consultants helped us pick out great colors for the walls. They spent time looking at our pictures and explained to us how undertones and lighting affects the appearance of the color on our walls. I ran into Victor a few weeks ago, and he has been a tremendous help for us. He recently helped us find the right paint and supplies to refinish our bathroom cabinets. Victor also gave us very good advice about how to complete our project. This is not the type of service you would ever receive in a big box store, and it's made home ownership a little easier for us. read more
