This is our neighborhood Ace. Today I went in and needed help. As I walked with other customers past an employee named George, who spoke to everyone- except me. I continued walking looking for who could help me and finally decided to just wait for the employee who greeted me at the door. As I was waiting (I know George saw me) I watched him approach a customer who had just walked in. He greeted him and asked him what he could help him with. At this point I was annoyed because I had been waiting at least 5 minutes for the other employee to finish up. After about 10 minutes the employee was done and helped me. Now, I have two things it could have been. I'm a woman and I'm not white. This stuff usually doesn't bother me this much but today it did, hence the review. If you're a person of color I'd avoid. So disappointing and I will just travel further to the one in Jefferson Park on Central. read more

I went in & had a piece of glass cut for my picture frame he measured it & cut it rite away we waited for it & it fit perfectly this is why we go there although its out of our way we live in West Rogers Park . I've shopped this store for over 10 yrs. Have always like it. Very helpful staff. But was just in during grand re-opening weekend. I recognize no one. And if this new staff is what I can come to expect, forget it. Had about $500 worth of paint to buy. Dude had no idea what he was doing. He called for help. No one responded. Then he walked off and helped someone else and left me hanging. After 20 min of futility, I walked out of the store as I googled where else near me I can get the brand I need. As I waited, a woman who couldn't get help the previous Friday was back to try again. Probably shouldn't be this hard. I'll try the store again but I have a sad feeling it's not the same as I enjoyed under previous owners. read more

I would absolutely not recommend making any large purchase from this store. I bought a new Toro lawnmower here to replace my older Toro that lasted 9 years. After just one use, I found it to be severely underpowered, with performance issues that made it worse than my old model. I contacted the store to return or upgrade the mower (willing to pay the difference), but they refused because it had been used. When I reached out to Ace corporate, they said each store is independently owned and sets its own policies, but recommended I contact Toro directly. Toro told me that if I had purchased directly from them, they would've gladly accepted a return. However, since it was through Ace hardware, the store simply needed to submit a return authorization request--but they refused to do so. Very disappointing experience. The return policies here are more restrictive than those of the manufacturer or other major retailers. It's hard to justify "shopping local" when the customer service is this poor. read more

Why didn't I just go to Edgebrook Ace in the first place? Lou Manfredini (how embarrassing that I originally said Lou Malnati; I DO know who Mr. Fix-It is!!) wouldn't steer me wrong. I had been looking for the supplies I need to re-screen the window screens at my home (15 of them!). This seems like a simple enough task--according to YouTube, that is--so I brought my screen to get everything and ensure I got the correct size spline and enough screen mesh, and the employee called one of his coworkers as soon as I walked in to help me find what I need. And more... we'll see if I can install the new door handle I bought for my storm door. I was in and out within 10 minutes (I know that because the store was about to close). I haven't been here in a while as I used to come here more often when I lived in West Rogers Park, but I really do just need to start here in the first place. I got everything I needed here save the pull tabs for the window screens (which I ordered online), and the customer service was great. Now I'm hoping this project will be as simple as it looks! There's parking on Devon that is aid parking using the box or the ParkChicago app and an entrance on that side of the store. You can also park for free in the lot in the back where the main entrance is. It's also directly across from the Edgebrook Metra station, which makes it pretty handy, and A CTA stop (pretty sure it's a stop and not just a bus staging area), so you've got options when it comes to getting here. read more

This formerly great neighborhood hardware store has gone to hell in a handbasket. New owners are currently conducting a full store reorganization, selling off all the diverse products that made you know if you went there, you'd find it. Their object, they explained, is to stock the basics "everybody" wants. Then they're going to let customers "petition" for the store to stock the items they always depended on in the first place. BAD BUSINESS PLAN! Plus it's no longer the "Edgebrook Ace" but a "Devon Avenue Ace" said to be in Forest Glen. Why on earth would a new business owner come in to a very successful store, throw out the baby with the bathwater and insult the very community of Edgebrook he's depending on customers to operate in? read more

Ace is advertising Wild & Strong™ Small Batch Reserve Wild Bird Food Blend, 5 Lb., buy one get one free. The Norwood Park Ace was out, but the clerk checked and said Edgebrook had it, so I drove over to Edgebrook. There was just one bag of the advertised blend, but there was another variety of Small Batch Wild & Strong Powerful Songbird Peanut Wildlife Food 5 lb FOR THE EXACT SAME PRICE OF $9.99., so I brought those two bags to the checkout. Since the peanut Wild & Strong variety was not on sale in the flyer, both rang up full price. I explained to the clerk that there was only one bag left of the advertised item, so couldn't they just substitute the other blend?? IT WAS THE EXACT SAME REGULAR PRICE AS THE SALE ITEM, and also a Wild and Strong Small Batch product. The clerk said no. The manager turned up. I've had similar situations where the store manager gracefully agreed to a substitute, or a discount, to reflect the sale price, but not this guy! It's not the first time I went to Ace and found a they didn't stock a sale item, and it's not the first I ran around to different Aces to get the product I wanted. But I couldn't believe that this guy wouldn't split the difference. NOT A HELPFUL HARDWARE MAN. I like Ace because it's local, but I will prioritize Lowe's and Home Depot from here on out. I also bought a Suncast hosemobile and an Arctic Air Arctic Hat Evaporative Cooling Cap - a $60 purchase. I regret buying the other items - I should have just left. But I won't be back. I've always liked going to Ace Hardware stores because it just seemed more down to earth, but damn. This one-star rating is only because I was accused to stealing. I came in with a wall anchor to match a drill bit size. An associated pointed me to the wrong aisle to where the drill bits were. Then when I actually did find the drill bits, I checked out with the same associate. As I was getting ready to leave after paying for the drill bit, she asks "are you going to pay for that?" referring to the wall anchor I brought in. That's odd, because she was the one that I showed the wall anchor to when I asked where the drill bits were. Ace Hardware doesn't even sell individual wall anchors, let alone the wall anchor I brought in. That's absolutely embarrassing from a customer's standpoint. Why would I need to steal from a hardware store? Why would I buy one item and steal another item? After showing her the wall anchor and telling her that I brought it in, she didn't really say anything, not even an apology. I came to get an item, not be accused to stealing. I'll be avoiding this location from now on. So much for down-the-road convenience. read more

If you deal with the owner or a guy in the paint department, they are crabs-otherwise service is pretty good. They have a lot of unusual and hard to find items but are not the knowledgeable hardware guys of the old days. Worst is the "rewards points" system. You get rewards if you join and you get notifications from the phone app, but you can't use them from the phone in this store. You MUST have the physical reward card that was mailed to you, and it MUST be used in the very small time frame allowed. Other Aces have a system that allows usage from the app but the crabby owner is too cheap to install it in his store. read more

It's best not to buy anything from Ace Hardware stores as even with a receipt, if you open it, they won't take it back nor refund you the money no matter how useless the item is. In this case, I purchased a wallpaper scraper which am employee there informed me, when I was buying it, that includes a scoring tool. Not only did they misinform me, because it doesn't, it also was useless and didn't work as well as a standard putty knife. So next time just go to Home Depot or Lowe's or even order something online so that you can actually return it if it doesn't work. Other than some older generation attached customers, I predict that they'll be going out if business soon enough for having such outdated policies. They must not be doing so well if they can't take an item back. read more

I love spending time in neighborhood hardware stores. Local stores always carry items needed for the surrounding neighborhoods. Housing needs, electrical goods, window, glass and screen repair items, fuses, hoses, house and garden tools, etc. Due to their small size compared to big box hardware, there is a ton of merchandise bunched together and my eyes like to scan aisle by aisle at all the wonderful stuff. I don't just scan.. I buy things, whether needed or not. Some of which I end up gifting away. It's a hardware addiction I guess. There are lots of practical as well as impractical buys in here. There are a few local Ace or TruValue hardware stores I enjoy shopping in and due to convenience, I buy a bunch from Ace brand hardware stores. Luckily, I've never had much reason to return items. Occasionally I may be forced to get keys re-cut because they weren't done correctly the first time, but usually I'm fit with the right item via outstanding customer service from their store associates. While making a recent purchase, (here) I learned, this store particularly does not like returns nor do they adhere to any practices available via Ace's website. They do not want to service your return unless there is a factory problem with the merchandise. The cashier stated it had to do with, "some" neighbors buying items for cleaning purposes. Some, sorts of people that would use a product for a cause then return it like a rented item. I can understand this but isn't this why many smaller retailers charge restocking fees? I came to their store recently because of an internet ad for a shop-vac. (Before visiting this store, earlier in the day, I'd caught an article discussing the smaller Mom and Pop brick stores closing due to bigger companies like Amazon stealing loads of business. This alert is what caused me to visit a brick-and-mortar for my needs rather than order it online.) (STUPID!) I researched my needs online and then checked with staff. If any associate were willing to check their computer with me, we would have known this was the wrong model and I could have made a better choice. Another note of mention; Ace stores do not share pricing with the main website. Isn't that weird? A tool, fuse, shop-vac can have different pricing between locations. Also, returns and exchanges can be at their discretion. If you paid $40 dollars for a tool in Schaumburg and return it in Evanston, they may opt to give you their value of that tool. Not what is on the receipt. (While writing this review, shown on the side panel is a review from 6/24/2016 written by J C. that correlates with, some of my own, thinking. ) Some thing I dig about local hardware shops is the ability to talk "shop" with hardware associates. If someone asks what they could help with, you say what and a conversation could just run on and on. I didn't get that here. Had I gone to Clark-Devon Hardware or my usual Ace, I probably would have been advised of a shop-vac of more value or how to mod this tiny vac so that I could get the most usage out of it. (If you are in the market for a little shop-vac, ie 1-3 gallons. Instead of using the bag that comes with it. Purchase a filter. This will look like a napkin. This goes in place of the collection bag. Adhere it to the vacuum using a big rubber band, inside of the drum. You'll notice that now you have more capacity than with the collection bag and HP is not affected. What's the difference? As a shop-vac works, the collection bag collects debris. The buildup will affect HP and sucking power, as the bag fills. A filter merely protects the vac's motor, freeing up extra space to collect debris. A helpful tip from my own research.) read more

I called after work and the woman who answered the phone could not have been nicer! It was shortly before 4:00 pm. I asked if they carried a product selection I was researching, because my local ace was closing at 4:00 pm. They did and she told me they closed at 6:00 pm. It took me almost 45 minutes to get there, and when I started looking through the display the manager/owner said they were closing in five minutes! WHAT???? I said I was told they closed at 6:00 pm. He told me to just take it easy, but they had "a very hard day". I explained I just drove 45 minutes to get there. He said "I should have come in earlier." WHAT???? I bought the product, but will be taking it back today, because nobody deserves that kind of customer service. read more

Absolutely the best place to go for anything you might need in your house. They carry just about everything from apple sauce to zip ties (the applesauce is really good - Mullen's) As soon as you walk in, someone will ask what you're looking for and they'll take you to where it is. In addition to having hard to find things (I recently picked up a telephone jack adapter that was $15-20 online for $4), they provide services like copying keys and replacing screens. I even brought in an old doorknob that kept falling off and they rethreaded it to fit a new lock screw and only charged me a few cents for the new screw. read more

This is probably my favorite hardware store. They've pretty much got anything and everything you'd need to maintain your home. True, the big box stores have all the stuff you'd need to BUILD your house, but if you're just looking to replace or repair something, then this Ace IS THE PLACE. My favorite aisle is the hardware aisle, where all the screws, nuts, bolts, and other misc. things are. Everything is out in clearly marked, well organized bins and NOT wrapped in plastic and/or boxed up. So if I'm looking for just one or two little pieces it's easier to find. They have a great lawn and garden section as well. The staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable. Absolutely, hands-down the best hardware store I have ever been to. I love coming here. Just a few weeks ago, we had a bananas rainstorm during morning rush hour. Being a good hippie, I had gone to check on my rain barrels before dropping off my husband at the train. My "system" was not working and my dual-barrel setup was totally overflowing at my foundation. Forty-five minutes later, I'm standing in the Edgebrook Ace, holding a toddler, and dripping wet. One of the guys there BUILT me a pipe/flange/coupler thing of his own design (he glued it and everything). I'd just gone in to buy a length of pipe and plumber's tape. I was amazed. And then I installed the thing. It works like a champ, doesn't leak and now I have no more overflow problems. I heart you, Edgebrook Ace. read more

Super cute store and has nice people. I had three simple keys cut. I waited 20 minutes because there was s line and the key cutting machine broke. All three keys were cut incorrectly! I visited this hardware store on Saturday 5/27 to get some paint for my railing on my balcony to cover up the bird poop (damn birds!!!). After talking with Glenn, I ended up going with the medium size can because I needed it to touch up some 2x4's as well. I also grabbed some color preview sheets to try and closely match my exterior wall AC unit since THAT needs to be repainted as well. I'll be back for the paint for the AC unit! Maybe this is a good neighborhood store if you are a regular customer, but my experience was terrible. There was one other customer in the store when I came in to find a faucet washer that I needed help with. The teenage girl at the register called for someone to to come to the front, but when the kid came to the front, he started to talking to a regular customer he obviously knew. The girl didn't bother to point me out, so I walked to the other side of the store to look for it myself. After several minutes, I overheard the same kid complaining to another employee about a woman on the phone looking for gutters. This is an exact quote "why can't she fucking look on the internet or something". After the second guy got off the call I asked him if he could help me and told him I'd already been there for at least ten minutes. He told me they were very busy (several customers had come in after me at this point) but he came over and after looking for about 30 seconds, said we don't have it. It's out of stock. End of conversation. Go elsewhere - anywhere else. read more

I am a single mom of two small children and live within walking distance of this store. Over the weekend my kids and I walked over with our wagon and excitedly loaded up things to do in our backyard (garden supplies, water balloons, etc). In all of the excitement I forgot that I had a rewards member coupon and accidentally left without using it (the staff there that Saturday, 5/14/22, btw was AMAZINGLY kind and helpful...like 5 star helpful). I spent enough money that it was worthwhile to stop back to adjust for the discount (all within the terms (dates/items/etc) of the coupon). I was told they don't do adjustments and you must have your paper coupon in hand at the time of purchase. I respectfully noted that didn't make sense because I could just return everything and repurchase but it would be a huge inconvenience. The manager (Leo) then came over, and very rudely told me it's just not something they do and that he would get chewed out if he did the adjustment. He said he shouldn't even let me return/repurchase but that he couldn't stop me from doing that. So I drove home, loaded up all of my muddy tools, potting soil, water balloons, watering can, etc and hauled it all back to the store with my receipt and coupon. He just rolled his eyes and said something nasty under his breath while the cashier checked me out...and now, here I am giving a one star review to a place I have loved shopping in the past. The people that work here creep me out. I notice a mafia like closeness to the workers and many of the guys that seem to frequent there regularly. One guy, (chubby bald older) who makes the keys is rude, condescending, and, in my experience, was not helpful at all. Today, he was downright manic. Home Depot may be a megastore, but nobody creeps me out there. People don't condescend you bc you may not be a handyman who already knows what they're doing. It breaks my heart to write this as I've been coming here for 10+ years. The staff is generally friendly and quite knowledgable. I like that you can get in and out quickly, unlike the big warehouse places.....but. I recently had a bad experience and don't know if I'll be back. I bought $60 worth of LED Christmas lights and within a week about 25% went out. Another few days and the whole 4 sets crashed. The family had the flu and we didn't leave the house between Christmas and New Year's. When I try to return them (credit would have been fine) I was treated like a criminal. "There's no guarantee on lights" "It's after Christmas and those were on sale (so what?)" Nothing like "I'm really sorry, I know you're a regular customer..." It's the old adage that you're only as good as your last time-and this one was very poor. read more

I love my local Ace. I find what I need and things I don't need! Almost every one is super nice, friendly and helpful. Mr Paint guy can be a bit surly. usually acts like he's doing me a favor. And good lord, don't ask him for help or an opinion. Any one else has been willing to offer a suggestion. Something I sort of want from someone at the hardware store. But not him. And I should say, it's just the one guy. Any one else who has helped me with paint has been very helpful and willing to provide a suggestion or tell me what is most commonly used. Worth the Drive Helpful, informative, timely, diligent. Three Saturdays ago I drove to a local Ace Hardware in Chicago to buy an expensive Weber gas grill. I knew the make and model. All I needed was help in getting the grill to my house. I walked into the "other" Ace Hardware and stood by the grills. Then I looked for someone to help me, no luck. It's Saturday afternoon and there's nobody around? Walked out immediately. Then I drove to Edgebrook Ace Hardware. They were helpful. And very busy. Customers everywhere and salespeople everywhere. It took only a few minutes to find not one, but two salespeople that helped me. They were informative. They knew that the Weber Genesis grill that I wanted was not in inventory and had to be ordered. They knew exactly what kind of grill I needed to hook directly to my outside wall gas line (no tank needed). They were timely. I was in and out of the store in 30 minutes. My stove was ordered and I believed they would have it in stock in the next week. They did. They were diligent. When the grill arrived at their store, they assembled it flawlessly. They delivered to my house when they said they would. And finally, they installed it just as they had promised. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had purchased my Weber Genesis grill at the "other" hardware store. If you're looking for a big ticket item like a Weber Genesis gas grill, give Edgebrook Ace Hardware a try. The price was competitive and the service was great. Thanks guys. read more

Woohoo! I called Lou! I refinished a beautiful salvaged craftsman door and had it all stripped, stained and ready to hang. But oops, I accidentally got some polyurethane on the windows and in the attempt of removing the polyurethane, scratched all six windows. My heart sunk! So, I watched a UTube video that showed me how to remove the 6 window panes. Pretty easy. removed the damaged glass, called Lou and yep, they cut glass while you wait. Actually the man cut all 6, 8 1/4" pieces in less than 5 minutes. Ace IS the place! Thanks Lou. I could not have been happier with the service and your store. read more
