Old type hardware store feeling. If you need something to fix or buy and don't know exactly what you're looking for, these people can help you find it. They are really knowledgeable about the hardware related items. I went to Home Depot because it's closer to my house but they did not have a 5" back set for my front entry door, and they even suggested going to Clark and Devon to find it. When I got there, they knew exactly what I needed and offered to show me how to install it with the extension. They still cut keys the old fashion way, which I think is better then with that machine the big retailers have now. Give this hardware store a shot if you need anything, I'm going to start going here even though it's a farther drive for me. If you're a woman and expect to be treated like a human being, don't go to this hardware store. This was my second and last visit to the store, due to my experience with multiple employees today. I came in looking for drywall anchors, which I knew exactly what kind I wanted, and was able to locate them and fill out the quantity and price myself. Apparently this angered multiple of the workers there, none of which had offered to help me fill out the bag, and led them to suspect that I was mispricing or trying to steal items. I honestly don't know, they all just stand there and stare at you. When I got to the cash register, the woman with an accent started checking me out, and I could tell that she was entering the wrong prices and quantities for the items I had picked out. I tried to tell her this, but she said that I was mistaken, and if I had an issue doing the math I should've had one of the employees do it for me. She rang up my items (10 drywall anchors, a tub stopper, and five screws) and proceeded to tell me that my total was $24! I said that can't be right, and that's when an older woman begrudgingly came over to try and help out. I tried explaining the situation and told her the amounts, and she made a whole show of crossing out the numbers I had written, recounting everything, and then ended up saying the exact same thing I was saying to the cashier. This time the total was $7! She continued to berate me about how I should've gotten someone else to do it for me, as I was paying. I've never been so publicly humiliated by a worker at a store I was patronizing; at the very least they act like they wish you weren't there to annoy them. Go to an Ace, go literally anywhere else. I really want to like this place because they have a large selection of items, and have bailed me out when I have an emergency repair to make, etc. However, some of the staff is not very helpful, on top of flat out ignoring customers, and this completely ruins the experience here. I stopped in after work for two small items, found what I needed quickly, and got in line at the register, waiting for the customer being checked out to finish up. Although there were two other open registers, the two employees standing there didn't care that I was standing there waiting to pay, and proceeded to carry on a conversation for almost ten minutes. By this time, 3 more people had gotten in line, and were waiting behind me, all of us waiting for the guy that was initially being helped at the register when I first got in line. At this point, a third employee joined the ongoing conversation, and now there were 4 people waiting in line, even though two registers were open, and three employees were standing around having a good ol' chin wag. Terrible customer service, I tell you. Finally, it was my turn, and I checked out quickly, but not without coming to the conclusion that I won't be shopping here again. read more

There were two reasons I had to go to this hardware store. 1) I went to Home Depot to make duplicate keys for my condo. They said they were not able to do it. I went to Clark-Devon Hardware and BOOM...got my duplicate key done. 2) A piece from one of my bathroom sinks fell into the drain and so I took the other one to Home Depot as an sample of what I needed. The guy there told me that they don't sell that piece and I would have to change the whole sink hole area. Thinking what this guy said was gospel, I decided to forgo fixing the sink; I figured I could survive with just the one sink in my master bath. It's a new year so I decide to put that sink on my to do list. I bring the sample to Clark-Devon Hardware to see if they maybe have the piece I'm missing. The gentleman that helped me tells me that I have a Grohe piece and they don't sell it there, either. BUT he gave me the address of a place that does. Let me tell you something. If you have old or outdated plumbing fixture in your house or apartment, clark -devon is the only store with another place in the city to have those hard to get items. Clark-devon will have an item that the big box stores like home depot, menards, and lowes will not have in their inventory. So you can say Clark-devon is a specialty store. They also provide locksmith service as well. Furthermore, they also have free seminar classes that come every 3 months. These classes give presentations ranging from how to install a new toilet, installing a new electric outlet on walls and removing/installing new door knobs, latches. This place exists in an parallel universe where you can easily get help from knowledgeable staff (with actual expertise!) and find what you need, even tiny little parts by the piece (individual screws even!). They also offer a variety of services that are hard to find - I've gotten glass custom cut for picture frames, a push lawn mower repaired and sharpened, and even got a 1970s toaster oven evaluated to determine what was wrong so it could be repaired (it was easy - just needed to replace the plug - but I would have had no idea). They also have a list of local contractors for various home repair services. Skip the big box stores and enjoy a trip through the multiverse - it's faster than wandering through a giant warehouse desperately seeking help and advice that is never coming. I am in a serious committed relationship with Home Depot in Elk Grove but this hardware store is just around the corner. They've got a team of amazing sales people who are knowledgeable in their different departments and super friendly. Prices are good. The only reason I can't give them 5 stars is they lost the piece of wood that I had them cut a week ago but brought in to have one additional cut made. They re-cut a new piece but after installing it, found it to be slightly off. Be careful where you park. Parking "lot" immediately in front on Clark is actually city parking so you have to pay. One of the few places in Chicago you can rent a tiller. The rental counter rep started it up for me to make sure it worked. I got the tiller home and it performed only okay, shutting off a few times and sometimes not starting back up for a couple of minutes. It was a bit of a frustrating job, but the job got done. When I returned the tiller, the representative said, "yeah that can happen in tough soil with these little guys...I'm going to return your rental fee." I hadn't complained or expressed dissatisfaction, mind you, I just answered his question about the tiller's performance. The rental fee was nominal, but the gesture of waiving the fee entirely was huge. The big box stores are dead to me. I frigging love this place. I am the least handy person in the world and the staff are always super helpful, knowledgeable and understanding, and make me feel welcome and at ease instead of overwhelmed and out of place. Also, quick story, I got a hand-me-down Ikea bed frame that was (natch) missing some pieces. I called Ikea, and they told me the pieces had been discontinued. I went to Home Despot, and after 30 minutes of anxious wandering, finally found an employee who gave me a blank stare. Finally, I went to Clark-Devon Hardware (like I knew I should have done in the first place), and within five minutes, was approached by an employee who was like, "oh, yeah, we can make you some of those." so yeah, they custom replicated weird Ikea hardware for me at a super reasonable price (way cheaper than getting a new bed frame, at least), which I think is pretty cool. read more

I was stuck on a project for days, and after several trips to Home Depot, I made the trip to Clark-Devon and within 10 minutes had the parts, and answers I needed to finish what I started 5 days beforehand. They have a much better selection of harder to find plumbing and electrical components than Lowe's or Home Depot... and that came from a sales associate at Lowe's. Although for major appliances and gardening needs Lowe's/ Home Depot is still your best bet. It's good to support a Rogers Park/ Edgewater business as well. The choke lever on my snow blower broke off, naturally, when we were in the middle of February's snow storms. This was the impetuous for me to get a long overdue tune up for the machine. With spring around the corner, I figured my lawnmower was also in need of a tune up. I called a couple of repair shops, but none offered a pickup/drop off service. Clark Devon Hardware, happily, offers a pick up/drop off service (for a modest fee), and they did a great job tuning up and cleaning both machines. And they replaced the broken choke level for a very reasonable price. Both machines, which are each twelve years old, look brand new. Their prices were more than fair...I think they underprice their services. First rate. I highly recommend Clark Devon Hardware. read more

There is a lot to like here! 1 - First and foremost they are very well stocked with a wide variety of hardware. And it's generally the quality stuff that that a contractor would use (which is often the opposite of the what is going on at the big-box stores). And what they stock is not just the most common things. They always have what I need even if it is some semi-obscure item. 2 - Second, and equally important for me is that the staff really know their stuff. It's two weeks before Christmas, it's blizzarding outside, and my mother and I are on the hunt for mini white Christmas lights on a green strand (not a white!). First stop, Target, where we find one set of LED lights on a white strand. This will not fly. I call Sears and am told that my local Sears has them on hand. We jump in the car and drive (or slip and slide through sludge) over, only to discover that the customer service lady misinformed me and they don't even stock holiday lights! A Sears employee recommends a nearby hardware store, where we go, only to find the shelves empty. We stop at another hardware store, to find only green and red holiday lights. And then finally, I remember that when I lived in Rogers Park, I always found what I needed at Clark and Devon Hardware. From my little crafting projects to big clean-up jobs, Clark and Devon had always come through for me with great customer service and awesome stock. But, in this weather, two weeks before the holiday, could it be possible??? I called them up. Me: Hi, I'm wondering if you guys have, by any chance at all, mini white indoor Christmas lights. Gentleman on the phone, probably the manager: Yep! Me: You're kidding. GOTPPTM: No, why? Me: I have been all over, and NOBODY has them. GOTPPTM: Welp, we have them. I'm looking at them on a tree in our store right here. Me: But... but... do you have them in stock?? GOTPPTM: Yes. (A pause.) Well, let me check. [He puts me on hold. I immediately know in my heart that I will now be let down, my heart will be broken and he will come back and say that he was wrong and there's only that one string on their display tree and sorry bu--] GOTPPTM: Yep, we have them. LED lights and regular mini lights. We got em. Lots of them, right here. Me: .....Really? GOTPPTM: ...... YES. Me: Oh my gosh, Thank you! THANK YOU!!!!!! GOTPPTM: Uh, sure! Come on over! Sure enough, they were stocked to the gills! I couldn't believe my luck, and from his manager perch above the checkouts, the GOTPPTM spotted me as the maniacal, holiday-light-obsessed girl on the phone and said hi. Horrible experience. I don't give out poor ratings just to do it, but they deserve this review. Admittedly, I didn't know exactly what I needed, but these guys are supposed to be the friendly experts that help you solve problems. Bullshit. Without going into all the details here, I described the problem to the guy who first asked if I needed help, and this first guy said he had no idea what to recommend, so he asked another guy, who seemed annoyed to be bothered while he was in the middle of something. Guy #2 scoffed at my question, as if to suggest that it was idiotic. Even if it was, which it wasn't, at least be polite. He pointed to one product and said it was the only possible solution. I asked him if it was OK to use it outdoors, and he said yes. Then he disappeared. Upon reading the box, I found out that it was expressly stated that it is NOT to be used outdoors. I told this to guy #1, and he said, uh, well, guy #2 will be back in a minute. Then guy #1 disappeared. They seem to have a million other people working there, and none of them asked if I needed help, even though I was standing idly in the middle of the store clearly needing help. So I figured they must have a system of some sort, and they knew guy #2 was helping me. Who knows. Anyway, guy #2 was finally back about 10 minutes later and as I started to talk to him he walked right passed me on his way to ask another customer if they needed help. Guy #1 passed by a few more times, as did guy #2 and another guy who looked like a manager, but they all avoided eye contact. Sence ive moved to Rogers park 2 years ago ive been coming to this hardware store for everything, which something come up frequently where i need to come in. Not one time ive been in there has anyone whom works there not jumped to help me with any questions I have and what product I use. Yesterday I went in Devon Hardware and the Gentlemen working in the "hardware" department ( maybe 30 with a beard) was quick to help me about mounting my TV. Not only did he show me with what i will need he step by step told me of how to go about it to make sure the quality and safty of my TV. May I also ADD he was showing a lady infront on me the same thing of the questions she needed about another project she had. furthermore helped me so much as i mounted both of my TVs the whole way and saved me so much time If I could give them 10 stars I would.THIS IS HOW EVERY HARDWARE STORE SHOULD BE BUT UNFORT ITS NOT!! I am posting a complaint about Devon Hardware regarding a recent experience. On 9/19, I place on order for extension pipes for my ceiling fixture. I was told to check with them in a couple business days. On 9/25, I called Devon Hardware for an update. I was told the order didn't come in yet because of the supplier's holiday schedule. I was told to allow 10 business days. On 10/7, I called Devon Hardware. I was told they didn't even put the order in because they were short-staffed. I asked why they failed to tell me this when I called on 9/25. They had no response. They offered no apology and said I must wait another 10 business days. This has been the worst customer service I've received during my home renovation project. I have worked with Lowe's, Home Depot and Ace Hardware. Devon Hardware has been the worst experience among all others. I used them because of the convenience of the short drive from my home. I will never use them again. The price is generally more expansive than I found at other hardware stores and service is downright terrible. I suggest you look elsewhere as well. read more

You ever have that feeling of, you know you wrote a review about a place, but can't seem to find it? WT-Fudge. Many of these other 4-5 star reviews mention finding exactly what they needed and or getting helped out of a pickle. If you live in the locale or Chicago North side, you should definitely find that hardware need for your place. Clark-Devon is known by many contractors and handymen that service the North side of Chicago. Why? It's one of the biggest hardware shops. But Jacob you say, it's not bigger than Home Depot or Lowe's. No it's not. When you need something specific for your place it's best to check out local hardware shops first, like this one or any Ma and Pop owned TruValue like hardware store. These shops will house needs for homes and apartments. Such as fuses; not everyone has the standard switched fuse box. There are many buildings around this area that use the old school style of screw in fuses. These can be found here and the cost is minimal in comparison to ordering them at HD or Lowe's. Often sold in boxes of four but singles can be purchased as well. In Sarah J.'s review she mentioned finding odd shaped windows which makes total sense to me since I too found them here. Much easier to have my contractor pick them up here at a specific price than to have Home Depot measure and sell me some comparable windows for a higher price. If you take the time and look in your hood, you'll save yourself some grief. As far as service, I'd say 8 out of 10 times the clerk or associate asked why I needed the parts. Just to see what kind of job it was and whether they could offer some assistance or additional equipment. Questions and conversation like that is hardly found today in the larger scale chain hardware shops where most associates try not to get asked questions. I fucking hate it when a store associate tries to avoid your eye contact, so as, not to be bothered. Not the case here, most store associates will try and answer or point you to someone more knowledgeable. Clark-Devon is right on the corner of this intersection and a has an interesting entrance into the parking lot, careful not to cause an accident. Decent amount of parking which never gets too crowded even on the busiest of weekends. read more
