Professional review I was a contractor for years and I remodeled my home . I've been to a hundred hardware stores in the Midwest and this is by far the best. They actually have an expert in each section of the store and most have been there for years because they pay a decent wage. And if they don't know there's always a tradesman standing there who does. The store has everything, but what I am writing about is the attitude and willingness of the staff to direct you in your pursuit of repair or creation. I haven't experienced an exasperated sigh or rolled eye in more than twenty years. There is a clerk named Renee who goes out of her way to solve any supply problems, suggest alternatives and/or additional help. Big Box has never given me what I get from Clark-Devon. I had the screen and plexiglass panels redone and they are amazing. They also got them back to me in a week rather than the two week estimate. Also, this is a great store to browse. I return to my car in the parking lot and a Benjamin Moore truck operated by CPC logistics is blocking my car in. I go in and calmly ask the lady if it can be moved up a few feet. She says the driver will be right out. He comes out says "You can't get out of that? I'm not moving" and argues with me. Then I go into the store and tell them I will call the police. THEN the manager bothers to show up. Clark Devon Hardware needs to screen their vendors better. If they become a nuisance I am calling the Alderman's office. An amazing selection of unusual and hard to find hardware. Definitely better stocked in hard-to-find items than Home Depot or Lowe's However, I've experienced a wait of 15 - 40 minutes to be served at their back window & screen hardware counter, their tool rental department, or the locks and keys department. Maybe the rental department is better staffed early in the AM? Would give them 5 stars if it were not for the wait in these departments. read more

Bought a weed-wacker at Clark Devon last year and tried using it today but found a part had broken off of the bottom. I brought it over there to see if they could fix it. They had the part in stock and he said he'll work on it while I wait. 5 minutes later it was done. When I asked how much, the guy said it's still under warranty, no charge. Thank you! read more

This is one of the last late great old-school hardware stores. Big chains like Lowe's or Home Depot have their place, but if you need good advice from professionals on how to do a job, they are usually lacking. If you want good customer service and advice on how to do things yourself, Clark Devon is the place. They have classes on plumbing, basic electrical work, buzzers, ETC. and knowledgeable people on hand to answer your questions. The downside of Clark-Devon is that this place is so popular that you may have to wait 10-15 minutes for service in some departments. Another problem is the lack of free parking. Their free parking lot is almost always full from 10-5pm. They have a paid lot but who wants to pay the city to park for 5-20 minutes? They sell just about anything a do-it-yourself person would want or need and will order what they don't stock. I've spent quite a lot of money here and I will continue to so. I knock them down a star only because they open early which is great for contractors but not later till like 7 for us rushing home AND because while it is a fantastic local store the professionals there are not too keen in a novice who wants advice. Clark Devon is the largest independantly owned hardware in the (city, state, country ??? I don't remember which category it is). They have free instructional classes every 2-4 weeks Wednesdays for anyone who shows up. The classes are always helpful. Outstanding in every area. Selection, Service, Rentals, Helpfulness, Locksmith services, The only downside is that there are not more of them, or one more convenient to my own neighborhood. read more

I've shopped here for years but after today I won't be back. They sold me a wrench that was missing piece (a wingnut to keep it in place), which I didn't discover until I got home. I called them back as soon as I discovered it, and asked if they'd be able to exchange it for me when I got there as it was almost time for them to close. I explained I was 5 minutes away. The clerk on the phone was unhelpful and told me he couldn't guarantee there would be someone there to help me in 5 minutes after closing, after they sold me a broken/faulty piece of merchandise. I would have been fine if he had told me no or yes, but telling me "it's your risk" after they had sold me a faulty wrench is unacceptable. If I wanted rude/inconsiderate employees I can go to Home Depot. No need to frequent a local shop with a smaller selection for this kind of service. read more

I simply love everything about this store. From the layout, to the smell, to the variety and selection, this store is top notch. Their prices in some cases are better than big box and the employees here actually know what they are talking about in regards to your home project needs. I've never experienced such a chaotic, uninterested, and unhelpful staff in a hardware store. It took them more than 30 minutes to make me 3 cans of paint, and they were perplexed when I asked them if they had anything cheaper than $18/can. I'm shocked that this place is able to gouge people so much on basic paint, which can be purchased for just $8 at Home Depot or Menard's. read more

I am not a mechanical type of person..I definitely do not know the names of common household hardware. And every time I go to Clark-Devon Hardware, i stop a staff person and say "I need the dohickey that goes on the thingamajig in my bathroom" and they know what I am talking about! EVERY TIME!! They do not make me feel dumb, a common event at Home Depot, and the staff know their stock and share tips on everything. This last time, i brought my bedroom screen in for multi-hole repairs. (I have had an epidemic of flies this summer.) Kathy, the staff person who took care of my screen, had it repaired within one hour. THANKS KATHY! I haven't seen a fly since. read more

I love this place. I come here for home repair stuff, but more often than not, puppet supplies. I know: weird, random, BUT it means I'll frequently be using random things for strange purposes and have a lot of questions about how they work. I still can't believe it, but these guys have never rolled their eyes or shrugged off my questions, which REGULARLY happens at home depot and lowes. Each time they've helped me find what I need, or even helped me come up with other solutions once I explain what I'm trying to do. I've even gotten weird odds and ends for free there. I love this place. The guys there aren't sales-y at all ... usually I do have to approach them ... but once I do, they're just rad. read more

I am convinced that this place has everything. Not only that, the staff is incredibly knowledaable and just plain nice.

I came here looking for a stepladder for my kitchen, the first guy I talked to knew exactly where to find them and instead of just pointing in the general direction he walked all the way over there to show me the ladders and made sure we knew which kinds were available. In general it seems like employees at this store know where stuff is and are happy to help you find it. Compared to a huge store like Lowe's, shopping here was a great experience. read more

Went to lock shop at Devon and talked with a gentleman named "Ed". I have been in many hardwares in my lifetime but I have never been given the personal attention I received from Ed. Each time I visit Clark-Devon, every employee I come across is helpful and passionate about finding solutions to whatever project/gizmo I bring in the door. They don't just give you an aisle number to leave you wandering, they stop what they are doing and involve themselves with your project. I have always liked Clark and Devon hardware, because they are conveniently located for me and have a lot of great tools and supplies. They deserve 5 stars, however, for their excellent customer service and friendly staff. Whenever I go in I'm asked by several different people if I need help with anything, and the people who work there are both knowledgable and nice. I particularly appreciated the treatment I received a few days ago when I called asking if they sold pegboard. Tony said he had a cut piece he could sell me for less, and when I came in and it was too big, he found an even smaller piece that he cut 2 pieces from, only charging me $3 flat. He then evened out the sides so they looked new. If you're looking for a great neighborhood hardware store and want excellent, personalized service, this is the place to go. read more

This place is like a slightly bigger version of Ace Hardware. This is truly a neighborhood hardware store. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The place has all the hardware essentials.The prices seems to be a little higher that what you would pay at a big box store but is expected as you're paying for the convenience and knowledge. Went to Home Depot to find a set screw for a very old door knob. THEY told me to go to Clark-Devon Hardware - so I did. To make a long story short - I had 3 different people helping me figure out how to solve the problem of finding a set screw for a very old door knob. Ultimately they came up with a solution (retap the knob and get a standard set screw, replace the split spindle). Total cost was about $6 - but the level of service and time to help me cost them more than that. I felt they sincerely wanted to help me out, and had the knowledge to do so. Called their customer service on the recommendation of handyman I hired. Looking for some kitchen/storage organization drawers, and wanted to go "locally owned biz " route. I explained up front that I had no idea what the specific "hardware" was called & asked gentleman #1 to humor me as I explained what I was looking for & wasn't able to navigate on their website. Was told "Im going to pass you on to.. someone else anyway" (meaning don't waste my time or your breath), btw no hello, good morning, thanks for calling...NADA. I manage a team of people, who's primary focus is concierge customer service. So, familiar with what it SHOULD feel like when you speak to customer service. Lady #2, was snappy, told me she didn't know what I wanted, or needed and I had to interrupt her and say, " let me finish explaining my project please, so you can advise on what I might need" , then told her I was looking for "kitchen shelving that would pull out" Which I wanted to check out on line before trekking to the store. Anyone who has a 60+ hr job, kids and family will understand how "running over to a hardware store" isn't a casual trip, which I explained to her. I said "I just want to check out what's available online, I have the measurements, just need to know what it's called".. she told me what it was, hung up. Overall, made me feel like I was bugging them by calling ahead to see if they had what I was looking for before driving 30 minutes to the store.. rude, disrespectful. Sorry to say, will NOT be patronizing your store, and I have a TON of projects I'm embarking on for spring.. your loss CDH is HD's gain.. Maybe train your customer facing staff on how to make "non contractor" "home owners" clientele better! I don't expect you to know everything about MY job, so don't act high and mighty about your required job knowledge. read more

This is a great hardware store! It's big and they have a large selection of stuff. They have affordable tool rentals. Their prices are pretty cheap all around. The staff has always been friendly and helpful - the only complaint I have is the tend to "dumb it down" a bit for the women. (Both myself and my girlfriend have experienced this on separate occasions.) It's definitely better than any Home Depot or Lowe's. read more
