We wanted to change our locks on bathroom and bedroom door, but we were trying to find the specific type. This was not easy as the lock was builder grade and you could not find it at HomeDepot, any other big store or online. Friend recommended this place. We took the whole lock there and employee knew exactly what it was. It was that easy. Saved us a lot of time and money, as we did not have to replace the doors. The best hardware store ever. They stock an unbelievable range of hard-to-find items. Every time I need a part for a discontinued faucet, an old intercom, a special door lock, or some other obscure item that nobody else has heard about, Clark-Devon has it, often for half the Ebay price. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. They may not have all the options a Lowe's or Home Depot may have but they have all the unusual fittings and equipment these big box stores lack. They also have legitimate professionals who have given me some of the best advice for fixing up my house on my own, from plumbing, electrical and even general work. Professional review I was a contractor for years and I remodeled my home . I've been to a hundred hardware stores in the Midwest and this is by far the best. They actually have an expert in each section of the store and most have been there for years because they pay a decent wage. And if they don't know there's always a tradesman standing there who does. The store has everything, but what I am writing about is the attitude and willingness of the staff to direct you in your pursuit of repair or creation. I haven't experienced an exasperated sigh or rolled eye in more than twenty years. There is a clerk named Renee who goes out of her way to solve any supply problems, suggest alternatives and/or additional help. Big Box has never given me what I get from Clark-Devon. If this was my opportunity to vote for, "Hardware Clerk of the Year", Renee gets my vote. read more

To top off the incomprehensible vastness of hardware in stock, the place is staffed with hardware wizard-sensei-gurus. Bringing in a part to Clark and Devon is a show in itself. I needed to redo my screen door and went to two places before googling "storm door repair in Chicago" and finding Clark Devon Hardware. I had the screen and plexiglass panels redone and they are amazing. They also got them back to me in a week rather than the two week estimate. Also, this is a great store to browse. Bought a weed-wacker at Clark Devon last year and tried using it today but found a part had broken off of the bottom. I brought it over there to see if they could fix it. They had the part in stock and he said he'll work on it while I wait. 5 minutes later it was done. When I asked how much, the guy said it's still under warranty, no charge. Thank you! read more

I return to my car in the parking lot and a Benjamin Moore truck operated by CPC logistics is blocking my car in. I go in and calmly ask the lady if it can be moved up a few feet. She says the driver will be right out. He comes out says "You can't get out of that? I'm not moving" and argues with me. Then I go into the store and tell them I will call the police. THEN the manager bothers to show up. Clark Devon Hardware needs to screen their vendors better. If they become a nuisance I am calling the Alderman's office. Next time I will just call the police first. read more

This is one of the last late great old-school hardware stores. Big chains like Lowe's or Home Depot have their place, but if you need good advice from professionals on how to do a job, they are usually lacking. If you want good customer service and advice on how to do things yourself, Clark Devon is the place. They have classes on plumbing, basic electrical work, buzzers, ETC. and knowledgeable people on hand to answer your questions. The downside of Clark-Devon is that this place is so popular that you may have to wait 10-15 minutes for service in some departments. Another problem is the lack of free parking. Their free parking lot is almost always full from 10-5pm. They have a paid lot but who wants to pay the city to park for 5-20 minutes? They sell just about anything a do-it-yourself person would want or need and will order what they don't stock. I've spent quite a lot of money here and I will continue to so. Anyone needing a good local hardware store, this is the place. read more

Another great gem in Rogers Park. I knock them down a star only because they open early which is great for contractors but not later till like 7 for us rushing home AND because while it is a fantastic local store the professionals there are not too keen in a novice who wants advice. The junior staff were helpful but the crusty plumbing guy really could not be bothered. In any case. Great location. Great selection. not a big box. Good prices. read more

Clark Devon is the largest independantly owned hardware in the (city, state, country ??? I don't remember which category it is). They have free instructional classes every 2-4 weeks Wednesdays for anyone who shows up. The classes are always helpful. Outstanding in every area. Selection, Service, Rentals, Helpfulness, Locksmith services, The only downside is that there are not more of them, or one more convenient to my own neighborhood. read more

I've never experienced such a chaotic, uninterested, and unhelpful staff in a hardware store. It took them more than 30 minutes to make me 3 cans of paint, and they were perplexed when I asked them if they had anything cheaper than $18/can. I'm shocked that this place is able to gouge people so much on basic paint, which can be purchased for just $8 at Home Depot or Menard's. read more

Definitely better stocked in hard-to-find items than Home Depot or Lowe's However, I've experienced a wait of 15 - 40 minutes to be served at their back window & screen hardware counter, their tool rental department, or the locks and keys department. I am not a mechanical type of person..I definitely do not know the names of common household hardware. And every time I go to Clark-Devon Hardware, i stop a staff person and say "I need the dohickey that goes on the thingamajig in my bathroom" and they know what I am talking about! EVERY TIME!! They do not make me feel dumb, a common event at Home Depot, and the staff know their stock and share tips on everything. This last time, i brought my bedroom screen in for multi-hole repairs. (I have had an epidemic of flies this summer.) Kathy, the staff person who took care of my screen, had it repaired within one hour. THANKS KATHY! I haven't seen a fly since. read more

I love this place. I come here for home repair stuff, but more often than not, puppet supplies. I know: weird, random, BUT it means I'll frequently be using random things for strange purposes and have a lot of questions about how they work. I still can't believe it, but these guys have never rolled their eyes or shrugged off my questions, which REGULARLY happens at home depot and lowes. Each time they've helped me find what I need, or even helped me come up with other solutions once I explain what I'm trying to do. I've even gotten weird odds and ends for free there. I love this place. The guys there aren't sales-y at all ... usually I do have to approach them ... but once I do, they're just rad. read more

I came here looking for a stepladder for my kitchen, the first guy I talked to knew exactly where to find them and instead of just pointing in the general direction he walked all the way over there to show me the ladders and made sure we knew which kinds were available. They don't just give you an aisle number to leave you wandering, they stop what they are doing and involve themselves with your project. I have always liked Clark and Devon hardware, because they are conveniently located for me and have a lot of great tools and supplies. They deserve 5 stars, however, for their excellent customer service and friendly staff. Whenever I go in I'm asked by several different people if I need help with anything, and the people who work there are both knowledgable and nice. I particularly appreciated the treatment I received a few days ago when I called asking if they sold pegboard. Tony said he had a cut piece he could sell me for less, and when I came in and it was too big, he found an even smaller piece that he cut 2 pieces from, only charging me $3 flat. I've shopped here for years but after today I won't be back. They sold me a wrench that was missing piece (a wingnut to keep it in place), which I didn't discover until I got home. I called them back as soon as I discovered it, and asked if they'd be able to exchange it for me when I got there as it was almost time for them to close. I explained I was 5 minutes away. The clerk on the phone was unhelpful and told me he couldn't guarantee there would be someone there to help me in 5 minutes after closing, after they sold me a broken/faulty piece of merchandise. I would have been fine if he had told me no or yes, but telling me "it's your risk" after they had sold me a faulty wrench is unacceptable. If I wanted rude/inconsiderate employees I can go to Home Depot. No need to frequent a local shop with a smaller selection for this kind of service. read more

This is a great hardware store! It's big and they have a large selection of stuff. They have affordable tool rentals. Their prices are pretty cheap all around. The staff has always been friendly and helpful - the only complaint I have is the tend to "dumb it down" a bit for the women. (Both myself and my girlfriend have experienced this on separate occasions.) It's definitely better than any Home Depot or Lowe's. read more

A true classic. Don't be put off by the sometimes gruff staff - they usually know their stuff. This is what a hardware store should be. And they apparently finally gave in to pressure from the alderman and put some sort of displays in the formerly eyesore Devon-side windows.
