Well... I was less than impressed with Cj's from the moment we pulled into the parking lot to the moment we left the restaurant. Here's why: We pulled in, and the area the restaurant is in is less than friendly. It's rather sketchy. Definitely an area I wouldn't go alone. We came into the restaurant and stood at the host stand for s few minutes before somebody came to seat us. We had a 9 month old baby with us, and asked for s highchair and the host brought a booster seat, and then when we told him we needed a chair, he brought one back that was dirty and less than pleasant looking. He gave us some menus and walked away. We sat there with the menus for a good 15 minutes without somebody coming to take our breakfast order. FIFTEEN MINUTES! We were one of the only families in the restaurant, and we were HANGRY! Our server finally came, took our order and off she went. She had no personality, and I don't even remember if she told us her name. The food came, and it was the most underwhelming breakfast I have ever seen. My over easy eggs already had the yolks running out, my toast was burnt black, and the fruit I ordered was a few pieces of un-ripe melon. My mom & dad, first snowbirds and now permanent desert residents, first took me to CJ's many years ago. It was an instant favorite with me. Now that my wife and I are full time in the desert, we get to go to CJ's regularly. I can't say enough about this cozy, family run restaurant. Everyone who works there is always warm and welcoming, and we look forward to seeing them. The food is fantastic. My wife loves their huevos ranchero for breakfast or lunch. My favorite lunch is the soup/half sandwich combination which never disappoints. Today I had the Turkey/Swiss/Bacon melt with albondigas. Delicious! Also try the reuben or the tuna melt. For breakfast, omelettes and pancakes are out of this world. We go at least once a week, probably more when the weather is cooler as we enjoy sitting outside on the porch. Got nervous driving past the industrial park and self storage, but this place is great! They are famous for chorizo and eggs, and refried beans. Great diner in the middle of Palm Desert in an industrial complex area. Have vegetarian options as well. My omelette is not too greasy and tasted light, and English muffin is toasted right. Since I live fairly close by, I've walked by this place but because it is in an industrial / commercial area, I really didn't think it would be open for breakfast. I'm glad I was wrong! We arrived around 11:00 and had a very enjoyable breakfast. We started with Mimosas...which came with the remainder of our champagne splits and a creamer full of OJ to freshen up our drinks. Nice touch!! I had the 2+2+2 (2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, 2 pancakes) and my guy got one of the Omelettes. The service was friendly and fast despite the fact the place was packed. Cj Diner The deserts best kept secret Palm Desert This is my first time having breakfast here. Their slogan is very accurate. They are well hidden but gps can definitely find it. It looks like this place would be the hang out for the locals. Menu was a little grimy but it was not that bad. Ordered my usuals. Steak and eggs!! A little bit pricey comparing to the breakfast place in the desert. There was a loop hole for substituting the toast for biscuits and gravy without paying $7 for it to be on the side. Its only $1.75 for making it biscuits plus gravy on the side. Let me tell you about the gravy. It was smooth and velvety. There were sausage chunks in there and I actually finished both the biscuits and put some on my steak because it was that good. I didn't have to put salt or pepper. The gravy has the right consistency. My steak was cooked perfect. But I wish that they would have rested it for a little longer . I don't really like steak juices underneath my eggs. My eggs was gooey in the middle and the whites was not raw which for the first time, I didn't have to return it, to get it cooked some more. The steak needed a touch of salt but my breakfast was very good all in all. Service was very good. Two waitresses approached me as I was about to sit down. Asked me for my drinks right and I got my food within 10-13 minutes. They refilled my water without me asking, and they gave me a to go cup that was full. It was a very nice experience. I wish I had time for desserts cause they have a dessert fridge and it all looked good. I highly recommend this place to people going to Palm Desert or on their way to Rancho Mirage. We came in today to enjoy some lunch and didn't know where to eat, I ordered a grilled chicken avocado club and substituted the cheese for cheddar cheese, the fries and the chicken were amazing! With a side of ranch and it's exactly the ranch you want when you eat it with your fries, she ordered the burger and it was also really good! An American diner situated in an industrial park. They were extremely busy on a Sunday, but fortunately there was one last table that 5 of us sat at for breakfast. Ample menu choices with all the familiar breakfast fare. I had bacon and eggs and asked for hashbrowns to be crispy well done. They looked great when they arrived, but they were only cooked on one side, so it was a mix of crispy and mush. My other half had chicken fried steak and eggs. It looked great, not a very large portion, but tasty. The staff kept all our beverages topped off. Service was slow both to get waited on in the first place, to a long wait for food from the kitchen. Staff was trying though, and did their best. They were probably short a person, which is becoming more and more common in the industry. Comments on our food.....eggs were all done exactly as asked, bacon was crispy, as asked, All in all it ticked all the boxes for a decent diner breakfast, with a friendly staff. read more
