We were very happy with our dinner here, which was a birthday celebration. The service was excellent; our server understood that we were not in a rush, and he timed the delivery of our food perfectly. A pet peeve of mine is when food is delivered before cocktails are done, which he obviously understood! Delicious, warm rolls were served with tasty butter. We had three different salads, and all were delicious. Goat cheese and beets! But the steaks were easily the best part of the meal. One of us had the steak frite entree, and he said it was one of the best steaks he's ever had, and the fries were exquisite! I had the filet mignon, which was perfectly cooked, incredibly tasty, and best of all, reasonably priced! The prices are refreshingly affordable, with lots of bottles of wine under $40. Please do not change this! We want to go back for Happy Hour, but in any case we'll be back for more. The waiter also overheard that it was birthday, and he brought a shareable dessert to the table. Came here with a group of 6 for dinner. While we arrived separately were taking our time deciding what to eat because we were visiting, the first round of drink service was lacking, having to ask for a couple of drinks more than once. When we were ready to order, it took a while to flag someone down. The first thing we all agreed on were the rolls tasted like frozen rolls from Costco heated up. There was just no flavor. They also only gave us one pat of butter! To share!!!! And these rolls needed to be smothered in butter to give them any kind of taste. I can't speak for everyone else's food, but I had the Chicken Parm, and it was just OK. The chicken didn't have any, extremely little, breading or seasoning making it taste like grilled chicken covered in cheese with some pasta sauce. The portions were big enough, just not tasty enough to finish. They also failed my refill my Diet Coke test. Not good. The servers were nice enough, just slow. My friend and I both got recommendations for this place, so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant and bar spaces are both beautiful and all staff we encountered were friendly and professional. We found a table in the bar and ordered off the happy hour menu, which offers $2 off ALL alcohol, not just select items. My friend got the fish and chips (she loved it) and I tried the venison sliders with blue cheese and caramelized onions. Both dishes had ample portions. Sliders came with sweet potato and regular fries, which was a nice surprise. We shared the apple pie dessert, which felt more like a bread pudding and was absolutely delicious. We've eaten several times at this newly opened restaurant. Between me and my spouse we've pretty much eaten everything on the lunch menu. Our favorites are the Chinese Chicken Salad, the French Dip Sandwich, and the Croque Monsieur. We love the atmosphere here, especially the beautiful chandeliers. Parking is plentiful and easy. Service is great. I have a few suggestions - they have Coke Zero but not Diet Coke, and I wish they would add that. Also, it would be nice if they offered some cold sandwiches. We had heard good things about California Bistro, and went to try for dinner. It wasn't bad, per se, it just wasn't as good as I hoped. The menu was rather benign, all the usual expected dishes and nothing really stood out. We asked the waiter what was good, and he struggled to answer. Got the calamari to start - crispy, not chewy, but the sauce lacked flavor. The chicken Marsala was a little dry, sauce and noodles were a little bland. Writing this little review after what I believe is my third visit. Maybe second? I have a hard time keeping track. If it is 2 it will soon be 3. Either way I have gone in to find it HAPPY HOUR, always a nice place to start when discovering a new spot. The place is gorgeous. Looks like they sunk a million bucks into. Crystal lighting, white linens, spacious with lots of natural light from large windows. Grand piano greets you at the entrance. It feels upscale but also cool and casual at the same time. The HAPPY HOUR nibbles menu is loaded with quick bites that are casual and hit the spot and filling enough to chow down before you race off to the McCallum or a Drag Show! Delicious simple turkey burger with cheese and the dress bits on the side for you to build to your liking. Includes a nice forkful of fries. The crispy fried Cod tacos with pico and optional Tartar sauce and some fries also delicious and pretty hefty. I can't remember many more but I think there was a Poki Nacho among several other choices. A few bucks off drinks or maybe it's two bucks off beers or both. The service is super friendly and incredibly accommodating. A very nice addition to Rancho Mirage! And breakfast!!! It is their strong spot as well! read more

Having read some positive reviews for this new spot, we gave it a try for breakfast, which is served 8:00-11:00. It was nearly eleven, but they assured us we could order breakfast, though by the time we were starting to eat, the lunch crowd showed up and the place got more lively. Perhaps too much so, as the noise level was beyond our preference. Service was polite, prompt, professional and attentive. One of us had ab omelette with some fruit and two slices of completely dry toast, which needed something to put on it, maybe butter, more likely jelly or jam. Two of us had pancakes, one with blueberries and one plain, but they added sliced strawberries to the plain order anyhow. Both were tasty and filling. This restaurant has three serving times, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a full bar for the after work audience. Very sparse for a Saturday night. Sergio, our server, couldn't have been nicer. Drinks took about 29 minutes, which considering the small number of people was a little surprising.. Food was OK ,, some better than others. One ordered lamb and it was a bit rarer than ordered so our friend got an extra drink as an apology which was nice. My dish of scallops was good. Dessert was peach cobbler and that was delicious. Was disappointed the gelato listed on the menu was not available but didn't hinder experience: one person commented that the silverware was cheap and not a good fit for the atmosphere.. I was very pleasantly surprised when visiting the former villa abate and carnival lounge location in Rancho mirage yesterday. It is sandwiched in between Willies and Foxy's on the corner of Frank Sinatra and hwy. 111. Upon entering it has stark white walls and black floors. I joined a friend from Palm Springs at the bar. We each had a glass of wine, I ordered the mango shrimp salad, which was ample with very large perfectly chilled, deveined shrimp and avocado ....he ordered the Turkey sandwich with seasoned beer battered fries. There was a delightful aioli in the sandwich and a side of cranberry sauce. Our waiter/bartender was extremely attentive and our meals are delivered in under 10 minutes. On the positive side, ambiance is very nice. Sat at the bar. Bartender was great. I was disappointed with the menu. I had a hard time finding something I wanted. I ended up with the tuna on crispy rice. That was very sad. The rice was not crispy, tuna was ok. I ordered the gluten free eggplant Parmesan. Hardly any eggplant and too much sauce and cheese. I applaud the restaurant for having a gluten free option but it was poorly done. While sitting at the bar two people who sat down ended up leaving as they were dissatisfied with the service as they waited a long time and no one ever came over to take a drink or food order. I hope they get it together as the location and venue are very nice. I hope they re-think the menu. I would like to see them succeed but a lot needs to improve. read more

2 Star on this review says "Could have been better" and that is perfect. It wasn't awful but definitely could have better food. The staff were wonderful, atmosphere was nice, prices are about as expected. But the menu and food both needed some help. We looked at the menu on the website before going and looked fine so we went. Normally there is some type of theme or angle for the menu but looked like they looked at 20 other restaurant menus and took a couple things from each. The food (at least what we had) seemed pretty flavorless. The Sanddabs had no taste at all. It at least had some sauce but very little. Even it's vegetables were bland. Our other plate- Linguini Shrimp Checca sounded good with basil, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes and shrimp. The basil bits were tiny and no flavor. Garlic? Didn't taste any at all. The tomatoes were just chopped tomatoes. They were not sun-dried which is the reason I ordered this dish as I love sun-dried tomatoes. After dinner we even commented on the rolls- fresh, warm, and a slight smell of hot fresh bread but when eating- no flavor. Funny how that same theme ran throughout the whole meal. We might go back some time but not for awhile. Oh, and before we went I had heard they charge you to use your credit card. I checked the menu to see if there was a notice and there was not. When I got the bill it had a "Cash" price and a "Non-Cash" price. The non-cash was 4% higher. Even the bill does not say cc fee or even the amount. Ours was $2.88 fee. Really? Just put it in your food costs. Not advising people in advance is NOT good business. Oh, and if you look at their own online menu you would expect it to be the same as the menu you are given in the restaurant. Some food items are different which is fine but the Scallops says $38 on their website yet the menu you get in the restaurant shows $48. read more

I expect some of the kinks to be worked out in the next few weeks, such as getting all plates to the table while still warm, fixing wobbly tables, and not charging for a split just because we wanted to share a salad off the same plate (the manager did comp that when we asked ). I do hope they will go more bold with spiciness (they provided crushed red pepper on request), as most Coachella Valley cuisine is a step above nursing home spice levels. read more

Upon receiving the check a choice between credit card or cash. The credit card was about 4.5% more. Nothing on the menu that use of credit card was an additional charge. Four of us went yesterday for lunch. Sergio was our waiter and was terrific. The dining room filled up quickly as the noon crowds filed into the restaurant. I had the French dip which was very good. Someone mentioned in their review that the au jus was like a gravy. Not the case, thankfully, for us. The au jus was a very traditional tasty stock. The French fries are delicious. The California Bistro is a stellar addition to the Coachella Valley food scene. Occupying a refreshed site, the restaurant is spacious, bright, and beautifully decorated, featuring a stunning glass-front wine rack that sets a sophisticated tone. I stopped in for lunch today and was greeted by an incredibly friendly and efficient waiter who noted they've only been open for four weeks. While they offer distinct menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the star of my meal was the French Dip. It is easily one of the best I've ever had--boldly rivaling (and perhaps surpassing) the legendary Philippe's in Los Angeles. The beef is thinly sliced with perfectly seared edges that provide an incredible pop of flavor. Instead of the standard thin au jus, it's served with a rich, gravy-like reduction made from beef drippings. Paired with beer-battered frites that were fried to a perfect crunch, it's a knockout combination. My guests were equally impressed with their hamburger and turkey sandwich. Though I'd never pass up fries of this caliber, it was nice to see a fresh fruit substitution offered. Excellent service, a great bar menu, and top-tier food--I'll definitely be back. read more

We went here today for brunch for the first time. The food was great. The service was outstanding, and the room is very pretty, albeit, a tad on the loud side. That said, I do not know if I would ever return. The reason is that they charge one price if you pay cash and another price if you use a credit card or even a debit card. The difference is about $4.50. I don't go to any restaurants that charge customers for their cost of doing business. I will not pay for employees health insurance which restaurants often try to tag onto bills as a service charge. That is the responsibility of the restaurant, not the customer. I won't pay for service charges like this. I don't feel it's right. It's your business. Expenses are involved, and those need to be covered by the place of business. You don't just flagrantly add it on to the bill and be punitive towards customers that use a card. It's deceptive if you don't advertise that this is your business practice upfront. I was shocked when the check arrived, and this was the case. Had I known, I would not have gone here. read more
